MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR The 2019 annual report of the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities maps the power of the humanities to engage new dimensions of culture, interpret the past in dynamic, provocative ways, and connect with the places we live, work, and visit. I am inspired by the vision and passion of those who carried out programs and projects supported by grants from the Humanities Council, the leaders recognized at the Celebration of the Humanities, and the Council’s partners and collaborators. Our grants, partnerships, and initiatives are designed to innovate new and bold approaches to the humanities, amplify voices that need to be heard, and take on civic challenges through knowledge, questions, reflection, and action. We do not do this alone, but rather through a dynamic mosaic of support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, individuals who devote their philanthropy to the humanities, as well as businesses, foundations, and organizations that recognize the value of the humanities for a strong democracy and rich culture. These vivid and compelling stories address topics such as public service, the complexities of race and cultural heritage, and the history of urban development. MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR The 2019 annual report of the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities maps the power of the humanities to engage new dimensions of culture, interpret the past in dynamic, provocative ways, and connect with the places we live, work, and visit. I am inspired by the vision and passion of those who carried out programs and projects supported by grants from the Humanities Council, the leaders recognized at the Celebration of the Humanities, and the Council’s partners and collaborators. Our grants, partnerships, and initiatives are designed to innovate new and bold approaches to the humanities, amplify voices that need to be heard, and take on civic challenges through knowledge, questions, reflection, and action. We do not do this alone, but rather through a dynamic mosaic of support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, individuals who devote their philanthropy to the humanities, as well as businesses, foundations, and organizations that recognize the value of the humanities for a strong democracy and rich culture.
