THE POWER OF PHILANTHROPY Strengthening democracy and enriching culture through the RI Arts & Culture Research Fellowship

“In this role I am particularly concerned with representation and the organic nature of the growth of arts and culture. Looking at the arts and culture landscape in Rhode Island is like much of Rhode Island life: new stories bring you to new people, who in turn have their own stories, and everyone is connected.” — Janaya Kizzie, RI Arts & Culture Research Fellow Funded by Yarrow Thorne, the RI Arts & Culture Research Fellowship enhances Rhode Island’s reputation as a creative destination, connects our arts and cultural communities, and catalyzes education. MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR The 2019 annual report of the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities maps the power of the humanities to engage new dimensions of culture, interpret the past in dynamic, provocative ways, and connect with the places we live, work, and visit. I am inspired by the vision and passion of those who carried out programs and projects supported by grants from the Humanities Council, the leaders recognized at the Celebration of the Humanities, and the Council’s partners and collaborators. Our grants, partnerships, and initiatives are designed to innovate new and bold approaches to the humanities, amplify voices that need to be heard, and take on civic challenges through knowledge, questions, reflection, and action. We do not do this alone, but rather through a dynamic mosaic of support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, individuals who devote their philanthropy to the humanities, as well as businesses, foundations, and organizations that recognize the value of the humanities for a strong democracy and rich culture. With gratitude,

The support of donors and partners strengthens the Council’s ability to support more humanities projects and programs and to develop partnerships that reach more people, provide resources for educators, and enhance the cultural ecosystem.
