After living in Hawaii for 25 years, my grandparents moved to a historic home in Pleasant Grove, Utah. My grandpa was a cowboy and a history professor. My grandma was a quilter and a homemaker. Honey Locust is an homage to them and their homestead, which was full of love and learning. I have many memories of riding horses, learning skills such as quilting and canning, working alongside family while painting their picket fence, and singing songs while my grandpa played the guitar and taught us about our heritage. We worked together and played together at the sweet little house on Locust Street.

For this spring collection, I drew on some memories from childhood to provide my inspiration. I remember always hoping that the tulips would bloom in time for me to pick one for my Mom’s birthday in early May. They were always the first thing to bloom in our yard every spring. Lily of the Valley was another favorite early bloomer that grew behind my grandma’s house in the early springtime. At that age, I was enchanted by the book Secret Garden and would wish I could visit such a place. While reading, I would try to walk through the garden in my mind, along the paths through the flowers and watch the butterflies flutter from bloom to bloom. I wondered what prints and patterns were on the walls, the curtains, and the bedding in the manor. Over thirty five years later, these memories were key to turning my sketches and doodles into this enchanting spring collection.

When I was a little girl we used to make Christmas gingerbread houses from scratch with my grandma every year. We always placed a cute Santa by the door, candy canes on the rooftop and bottle brush Christmas trees in the fluffy royal icing lawn. These days I get to experience even more Christmas magic with my own kids, making our own gingerbread houses, decorating the tree, wrapping pretty presents and helping them hang their stockings with care. I wanted to design a fabric collection that would represent the simple things that stay the same in an ever-changing world: feelings of home, the sun coming up every morning, and fireflies dancing when the crickets start to sing at dusk. The colors in this collection are a summer picnic dream of grass and leaf greens, sweet petal pinks, sunny yellows and oranges, picnic reds, and sky aquas—a combination that lends itself perfectly to scrappy, colorful, and playful quilts!

Living in Oregon comes with breathtaking cedars and evergreens like you never see on the east coast but the fall colors aren’t quite the same. My husband and I were able to enjoy the sunshine and some gorgeous fall foliage while driving through Lane County where we learned some interesting facts about covered bridges. Covered bridges are icons of days gone by and pioneer life. They were often at the heart of the community, giving shelter for concerts, picnics and political rallies. They were also a place for people to post notices and messages that would be protected from the rain and seen as people traveled in the area.

Whether it’s providing tools to put a purple octopus on the moon, or enabling teachers to bring arts-infused learning into the classroom, Crayola is passionate about helping parents and educators raise creatively alive children who we believe will grow to be inspired, original adults. They’ve inspired artistic creativity in children for more than 100 years - since the first box of Crayola crayons rolled off the assembly line in 1903. The company began when cousins Edwin Binney and C. Harold Smith took over Edwin’s father’s pigment business in 1885. Early products included red oxide pigment used as barn paint and carbon black used in car tires.
After noticing a need for safe, high quality, affordable wax crayons, in 1903, Crayola produced the first box of eight crayons and sold them for 5 cents. Since then, the Crayola brand has grown into a portfolio of innovative art tools, crafting activities, and creative toys that give kids the power to express all that inspires them as they explore, discover, play, pretend, and dream.
