The Sylvan Lake Nexsource Centre was a project that spawned from community tragedy. It was apparent that the heart of the community was found within the local hockey arena, and when the roof collapsed overnight at one of the existing arenas in the multiplex, the community was clearly devastated.

NEW TO EXISTING PLAN DETAIL 1:20
The community fireplace was a feature within the building that was meant to capture the hearts of visitors as they walked into the building and had to allows the seniors and visitors in the lobby (both sides) alike to enjoy. The task involved product research, designing, and drawing the technical documents for the fireplace and was the first example of my independant design skill and tecnical prowess.
HDR | CEI was chosen for the daunting BASE PLAN task of creating a new building and master plan to consolidate the existing arena and pool into one large community facility that would sustain their needs for years to come. Riley joined the project team in September 2014 during the Design Development phase, and followed the project through to the Contract Administration phase during his two years of working at the company. Responsibilities had grown immensely over the time spent on the project, and included assisting the Project Architect during design development, creating contract documents, performing code analysis, developing the BIM model, rendering images of the project for client events, handling coordination between consultants, and performing contract admininistration tasks such as checking and approving shop drawings and sample submittals.

Although a relatively small part of the overall project, the fireplace design presented a variety of complex problems. The fire separation was required to continue along the length of the assembly and wall, as well the fireplace had to be visible from both sides, and allow access to the mechanisms within.

Similar to the Sylvan Lake Nexsource Centre project, the West Fraser Centre is acts as the heart of the community. The project called for the creation of a spectator arena with the ability to host the local Junior team during their season. Joining the team during Design Development, Riley again acted in a supporting role for the Project Architect and helped the project from Design Development through to the Contract Administration phase.
DRAWING DEVELOPMENT & DETAILING Envelope, technical detailing, and construction document development were just few of the responsibilities I held while working on this project. Ensuring the contract documents were upheld to a certain standard was a task that required a very meticulous work ethic and attention to detail. Placing components and fine tuning the revit model to properly and accurately represent the design intent was part of my daily work responsibilities. The envelope detailing in the project required extensive work with the Project Architect to finely tune the assembly durability as well as ensure the continuation of the barriers through the project.
Between the Sylvan Lake Nexsource SHADOW BOX SECTION DETAIL Centre and the West Fraser Centre, Deryck Bonifacio, the Project Architect, and myself handled all of the work required by the two projects. This required ourselves as a team to be flexible and adaptable to different situations and have the ability to flow between the two projects seamlessly. Working these two projects for the better part of two years at HDR | CEI challenged myself to become easily adaptable to a dynamic working environment, but also allowed immense training and learning to occur. The amount of knowledge I had gained on these two projects alone were immense.

COMMUNITY MASTER PLAN REVIT, SKETCHUP, PHOTOSHOP, BLUEBEAM team: Riley Syjuco Graphics Lead, Site Design BIM Specialist
Mary Chow New Build Design Lead Associate VP, Architect AIBC
Conrad Boychuk Reno Design Lead
Director Recreation Design, Architect AIBC
This community master plan was done while working at HDR | CEI. The master plan included creating and developing two different schemes for a recreation/community centre together with lots set aside for future residential development. The first scheme looked at renovating and adding to the existing sports facility, while the other imagined a new build scenario. While the focus of the master plan was on the creation of a large community centre, site planning and design played as big of a role. Working with the design leads we created two viable schemes along with clear graphics depicting site usability, and layout.

The Robson Redux competition is done every year to help re-vitalize the robson street square in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery. Our submission creates enticing spaces between finely crafted furniture pieces using local artwork, materials, and inspiration. Through the intricately designed exposed construction, physical connections are celebrated as design components as well as fine craftsmanship. The modular arrangement encourages interaction and social activity among the community. Initial concepts, graphics, detailing and design was done by both Michael and Riley. Allison and Claire, both from the interior design program, were brought on later in design to help with ergonomics, materiality and over-arcing themes.

REEHAL RESIDENCE SKETCHUP, PHOTOSHOP, REVIT, BLUEBEAM role: Lead Designer, Consultant
The Reehal Residence was initiated through a mutual friend, for work to design a house for their family to live in. The lot was bought next to their current house and had an unusually long shape of a site. The project called for conceptual analysis and design work for the project, following through to design development, and finally putting together a building permit package and IFC drawings for the client. Client meetings were held on a demanding bi-weekly basis to discuss design trajectories, requirements, and relevant needs. After submitting BP drawings, responding to City requests also become my responsibility. The clients had asked for a particularly demanding combination of spaces and program, including four bedrooms, five bathrooms, a rental suite, three car garage, and media room. The total width of the site was 20m, with 15m of buildable width accounting for site setbacks. This created a restricting design problem for the house. The overall design of the building followed a similar house plan design found within Richmond, but emerged in a form that was un-conventional in the neighborhood. The stone finishes and hardi-plank siding make calls to the other newly built homes in the area, while the form of the roof and expression of the program on the exterior sets the building apart. *all details were done in Revit

The Strathcona Recreation Centre was my thesis project during my fourth year at BCIT. The goal of the project was to identify the resources lacking in the Downtown East Side and to improve the lives of the local communities through proposed projects. StrathREC represents the culmination of a much needed public community centre where athletics can take on a supportive role to the residents. The project becomes a conduit for public interaction with its prime location and connectivity to its surroundings. Providing much needed support for community gatherings and youth athletics/clubs, StrathREC is the social and athletic hub the community deserves.

Initially, the project required thorough site analysis and consideration of various options for locating a pavilion in Burkevill, BC to revitalize the area and enrich the resident’s lives. The pavilion was a symbolic play on the long history of the town; built to house airplane workers and builders during the second world war. The form, arrangement and materiality pay homeage to the airplanes of old and creates a unique space reflecting the history of the town, while providing a functional space for the community. The result juxtaposes the old with the new, and turns history into a hopeful space looking towards the future.

CARTESIAN GRID STRUCTURE
INDEPENDENT INTERIOR SPACES
ENGAGING URBAN INTERIOR STREET
The cartesian grid lays is the grounding framework of the City of Calgary just like many Western cities. As the building sits located within an urban contemporary context, the layout of the cartesian grid sets a scheme to develop a organized external structural system analgous to post and beam and to form as a guide to the building typology.
As the structural post and beam system is located on the periphery of the building form, the interior spaces are thus independent from the structure. This allows an expansive open plan layout that promotes flexibility and an organized spatial adjacencies between the main programmatic components where the central circulation corridor is maintained.
Organic program forms can freely intertwine and collide with one another to create a fluid and dynamic internal circulation corridor. Visitors can meander in between the interior streets and corridors where programmatic elements direct and intervene between the main circulation path creating moments of intrigue that promote connectivity and curiosity.
