Riling Chen | Portfolio 2019

Hello!

4

In the summer of 2016, I was walking along a river in Fuzhou, China, when I stumbled upon a lively parkette where people who had never met before were dancing together. A year later, I found myself sitting in an outdoor coffee shop in Vietnam, watching a soccer game with 30 other people and cheering on the same team. My favourite memories are those where I feel connected to the community around me. I believe that architecture plays an important role in how people engage with each other. I’m excited to explore this idea, and to learn from the people I meet. This portfolio is a collection of my works so far as a second year architecture student.

Honne Church

Riling Chen | Portfolio 2019

In Japan, there is a saying. Where there is light, there is also darkness. In Japanese society, there is immense pressure to follow society’s expectations. Aft er this post-war era, this led to the rise of the terms, “honne and tatemae” which describe the contrast between what one is truly feeling, and what they can display in public. The Honne Church is a place of relief for where people can escape societal expectations. The concealed confession room and dark church make for an anonymous entry into the space. One can speak of their shame or guilt, without being judged. The church is divided into two parts. One side is light, made of delicate wooden screens that slowly masks and reveal light. The other is built of heavy concrete that has the power to intercept and redirect light.

The Core

Riling Chen | Portfolio 2019

Community Hub

Located at Annette St. and Dundas St. West, on the edge of the Junction in Toronto, the CORE is a community space for emerging artists, craftsmen and chefs. The shed-like structure and appearance echoes the neighbourhood’s industrial past while emanating the neighbourhood’s shift towards the arts through its vibrant choice of colours. As the nature of work shifts towards self-employment and flexible jobs, community hubs such as the CORE provide a social realm so that people are not working in isolation.

CORES These cores create varying levels of privacy designed to fit differing programs. The first floor is divided by columns, creating an open coworking space. On the second floor, the cores create enclosed rooms that serve as speciality workshops surrounded by open pathways. The third floor is an open plan community kitchen that is isolated due to its distance from the first floor. PUBLIC VS. PRIVATE SEMI-PUBLIC

URBS House

Riling Chen | Portfolio 2019

Temporary Housing

urbs house is dwelling that provides temporary shelter for two unrelated people that heavily considers the prefabrication process. Although temporary shelters can seem uninviting, the urbs house is defined by a lightwell that illuminates the space and adds privacy to the second level bedrooms. It simultaneously creates an outdoor space on the first floor that can be extended to the entire floor when the doors are opened.

This a-frame lodge accomodates travellers visiting Reykjavik, Iceland who want to enjoy the serenity of the environment. It comes equipped with movable pods that can be driven around the site to enjoy splendid views. The lodge is clad with solar panels and phase change material panels. It also uses solar powered radiant heating to reduce it’s heating load. In addition to preserving energy, the project aims to reduce it’s water use by implenting a rainwater and greywater system.

Ahh...ffect.

Riling Chen | Portfolio 2019

Decadimento emerged from an abandoned empire. Once, we lived in its gleaming, pristine walls in perfect uniformity. Our landscape was highly curated, our ideology was absolute. Our people could not sustain this impeccable existence; we craved a deeper and more meaningful way of living. So we turned away in search for depth. We descended from the surface. Here, in these winding tunnels, we dug for ourselves spaces for expression. Caverns and tunnels emerged that reflected new ways of interaction previously unexperienced. We found vast caves of contemplation, narrow tunnels of anticipation, intimate coves of affection. We continue to dig to find organic ways of habitation, of life run on our own terms. The decaying capital is a fragmented memory in the minds of our people. We are told not to look back. The network of tunnels that descended from our once grandiose capital are extensive because we are constantly questioning and revising. Living in this constant duality, we are foreign to the thought of settling. It won’t be long before we uproot once more.

Smoky light ripples across the trees as rain trickles through the sky, creating a weightless, dream-like sensation. The trees loom above the boy.

The characters travel through a series of narrow corridors, creating anticipation at every turn. Finally, the space opens into a grand part, signifying that they have arrived.

Oasis

Riling Chen | Portfolio 2019

Steel Bridge

Oasis is a semi-submerged platform and staircase where passing travellers can cool down by dipping their feet in the water or going for a swim. It is suspended between the marble rocks along the Narmada River which connects several villages in the state of Madhya Pradesh in India. Now, people can safely climb down the dangerous cliffs and cool down in what was an inaccessible gorge. Amidst the sweltering heat and irritation, people can find relief from the heat and in that shared sensation, connect with those around them.

Photography This April, I co-organized a photography exhibition that discussed the idea of ‘home’. As we explore new places, we begin to consider home not as a physical place but as a sense of belonging. These are snapshots from my travels where I explored the culture of different cities and how that impacts the people.
