Hello! In the summer of 2016, I was walking along a river in Fuzhou, China, when I stumbled upon a lively parkette where people who had never met before were dancing together. A year later, I found myself sitting in an outdoor coee shop in Vietnam, watching a soccer game with 30 other people and cheering on the same team. My favourite memories are those where I feel connected to the community around me. I believe that architecture plays an important role in how people engage with each other. I’m excited to explore this idea, and to learn from the people I meet. This portfolio is a collection of my works so far as a second year architecture student. Enjoy!

COMMUNITY HUB

THE CORE. Located at Annette St. and Dundas St. West, on the edge of the Junction in Toronto, the CORE is a community space for emerging artists, craftsmen and chefs. The shed-like structure and appearance echoes the neighbourhood’s industrial past while emanating the neighbourhood’s shift towards the arts through its vibrant choice of colours. As the nature of work shifts towards self-employment and flexible jobs, community hubs such as the CORE provide a social realm so that people are not working in isolation.

CORES These cores create varying levels of privacy designed to fit diering programs. The first floor is divided by columns, creating an open coworking space. On the second floor, the cores create enclosed rooms that serve as speciality workshops surrounded by open pathways. The third floor is an open plan community kitchen that is isolated due to its distance from the first floor. PUBLIC VS. PRIVATE SEMI-PUBLIC

TEMPORARY HOUSING

urbs HOUSE FEATURED IN “A YEAR IN REVIEW EXHIBIT

urbs house is dwelling that provides temporary shelter for two unrelated people that heavily considers the prefabrication process. Although temporary shelters can seem uninviting, the urbs house is defined by a lightwell that illuminates the space and adds privacy to the second level bedrooms. It simultaneously creates an outdoor space on the first floor that can be extended to the entire floor when the doors are opened.

OFF-GRID GUEST HOUSE

VIEWING ROOM This a-frame lodge accomodates travellers visiting Reykjavik, Iceland who want to enjoy the serenity of the environment. It comes equipped with movable pods that can be driven around the site to enjoy splendid views. The lodge is clad with solar panels and phase change material panels. It also uses solar powered radiant heating to reduce it’s heating load. In addition to preserving energy, the project aims to reduce it’s water use by implenting a rainwater and greywater system.

DISASTER RELIEF SHELTER

CO-GARDEN

When a physical home is damaged, that is the part that can be repaired. What’s really lost is the fresh smell from the local restaurant, the old neighbor who shares cookies, or the bird that always returns for the flowers in the garden. That sense of belonging in your home arrives from the community around you. Co-garden explores idea of a shared garden or “farm”, that is mounted above temporary shipping container shelters, serving as a workplace, dining or bbq area and outdoor social space. With a common purpose of maintaining this farm, residents can not only connect with each other, but regain a sense of belonging.

STEEL BRIDGE

OASIS FINALIST

Oasis is a semi-submerged platform and staircase where passing travellers can cool down by dipping their feet in the water or going for a swim. It is suspended between the marble rocks along the Narmada River which connects several villages in the state of Madhya Pradesh in India. Now, people can safely climb down the dangerous clis and cool down in what was an inaccessible gorge. Amidst the sweltering heat and irritation, people can find relief from the heat and in that shared sensation, connect with those around them.

photo graphy This April, I co-organized a photography exhibition that discussed the idea of ‘home’. As we explore new places, we begin to consider home not as a physical place but as a sense of belonging. These are snapshots from my travels where I explored the culture of different cities and how that impacts the people.
