This hand colored photo dating back to 1908 by Julia Tuell from one of her photo journals. depicting a beautiful tribute of this young Northern Cheyenne Mother to her baby.
It is titled, "Her Baby's Grave ~ Northern Cheyenne, Montana.
The inscription in her own writing says:
"A very ancient manner of burial and only one of it's kind known."
At the beginning of the 20th century, for every 1000 live births, six to nine women in the United States died of pregnancy-related complications, and approximately 100 infants died before age 1 year.* (*Information taken from the CDC website. Center for Disease Control & Prevention)
This statistic does not factor in the trials and tribulations of the Indians. A death of a baby was a real and tragic reality.
