Emphasis will be on structure, composition, color, and value, as well as on the creative journey of personal expression. Students are encouraged to bring their own references for inspiration.

Explore Ceramics: An Introduction to Working with Clay Nichole Moranda (beginner – intermediate) Tuesdays, 1 - 4 pm January 11, 18, 25; February 1, 8 February 15, 22; March 1, 8, 15 March 22, 29; April 5, 12, 19 Member: $185 (5-class series) Non-Member: $230 (5-class series) Explore the tactile and fun nature of clay in this introduction to the medium. Emphasis will be on the fundamental skills, vocabulary, equipment, materials, and preparations specific to ceramics. Each 5-week series will focus on a specific project. Students should come prepared with creative ideas for personalizing their projects, as well as ideas for building their own original clay creations. Hand-building instruction will focus on slab, coil, and pinch methods. Basic glazing practices will also be covered as well as a variety of decorative techniques. Note: Price includes up to 25 pounds of clay (for in-class project use only), glazes, and firing. Additional clay may be purchased from EAC. WORKSHOP: Yunomi & Chakai Japanese Tea Cup Workshop with Informal Japanese Tea and Lecture Nichole Moranda (beginner – intermediate) Saturdays, 1 – 4 pm March 5 Member: $75 (materials included) Non-Member: $100 (materials included) Get ready to be inspired by the traditions and aesthetics of Chakai, a Japanese tea ceremony. Enjoy a brief lecture about Japanese tea ceremonies and culture while you experience the flavors of a Japanese Chakai. Chakai, usually known as a tea meeting is open to anyone. After enjoying tea and the lecture you’ll learn to glaze your own Yunomi – a small, handleless Japanese tea cup. Students will be able to glaze at least one Yunomi in class and pick up their finished pieces upon a final firing.

WORKSHOP: Springtime Planter Nichole Moranda (beginner – intermediate) Saturdays, 1 – 4 pm (2-class series) March 19 & 26 Member: $75 (2-session workshop | materials included) Non-Member: $100 (2-session workshop | materials included) Would you love to try making decorative yet functional pottery? Do you enjoy the aesthetics of container gardens? Here’s your chance to experience both! In this workshop you will hand build your own planter or two and once fired you can pot it up with your favorite plant. No experience necessary. The workshop includes everything you need: clay, firing, and glazing. Want to make it a party? Private group rates are available for a minimum of 4 people. Projects can be completed in one day with a break for snacks or lunch (not included) and a studio demonstration by the instructor. Limited availability on Saturdays with advanced reservations. WORKSHOP: Ceramic Artist Authorization Workshop Nichole Moranda (skilled intermediate – advanced) Saturday, 9:30 am – 3:30 pm February 5 Member: $60 per workshop session Non-Member: $75 per workshop session This authorization workshop is for skilled ceramics students and/or members who want to participate in the Ceramics Open Studio without actively being enrolled in a ceramics class. Participants’ knowledge of the basic ceramics process: hand-building, wheel throwing, glazing techniques, and proper studio procedures will be reviewed and rated by an EAC ceramics instructor. Note: Students will need to bring a minimum of 1-2 bisque pieces, which will require firing to the level of cone 5 for glazing. Pre-Requisite: Must have prior intermediate to advanced ceramics experience.

Raku Workshops Weekend

Raku Firing Workshop Paul Frehe or Nichole Moranda (beginner – intermediate) Saturday, 9:30 am - 12:30 pm (10:30 am firing) Enrolled Student: $30 (materials included) January 29 February 26 March 12 April 9 Member: $40 (materials included) Non-Member: $50 (materials included) Learn to prepare, glaze, and fire bisque pieces in a Raku kiln. Bring up to 2 pieces (already bisque) totaling 1/2 cubic feet of kiln space. Vessels not larger than 5 - 6” diameter and 12” height work best. Get two pulls from the hot kiln. Price includes: instruction, glazes, and equipment use. (Additional or oversized pieces may be fired for an additional cost of $45/cubic foot of kiln space—time and space permitting.) To avoid problems with cracking, it is highly recommended that the bisque pieces used for Raku are made from stoneware with grog. Weekend

In the first session, students will create 2 hand-built objects using slab, coil, or pinch methods. The pieces will be fired to bisque. In the second session, students will have the opportunity to participate in the full Raku firing experience. This includes preparation, glazing, and pulling their bisque pieces from the hot kiln. Students will learn how to safely use tools to create sculptural works using Bass wood, a fine grained, soft wood that is easy to cut and sands to a smooth texture that absorbs paint well, allowing for a beautifully finished piece. Expand your drawing skills with color! Using a reference image you will learn the necessary techniques, color theory, burnishing, and layering to develop a quality colored pencil drawing. Come illustrate, explore, and express anything that inspires you. *Dates not consecutive

This four-week course will introduce you to the unique world of scratchboarding. You will be introduced to the essential techniques needed while using a variety of different tools to bring your image to life. Your photo references can be of any subject that you choose, such as a favorite animal, person, or place. *Dates not consecutive

WORKSHOP: Pen and Ink with a Watercolor Wash Don Melander (beginner – advanced) Fridays, 9:30 am – 3:30 pm January 14 March 4 April 22 Member: $60 per session Non-Member: $75 per session This is a unique opportunity to learn the technique of using a watercolor wash with your pen and ink that has been practiced for centuries. In a pen, ink, and wash painting the sharp edges created are primarily produced with the pen and ink. The technique is freely used to make preparatory sketches for paintings, with the pen line providing accurate detail and the colored washes (or brushstrokes) suggesting tone, volume, and atmosphere to express a soft yet defined image.

Learn more about English Tea traditions, while enjoying a cup of tea and refreshments, then create a botanical illustration depicting the form, color, and details of the plants used in the teas you just sipped! Botanical Illustration is a practice that can be traced back to the illustrated book, De Materia Medica, created by Greek botanist Pedanius Dioscorides to help readers identify plant species for medicinal purposes. Bring your friends along for a fun, culture-filled afternoon. For information about the 2D Open Studio options, please see page 12.

This class is designed for people who are interested in learning the fundamentals of creating realistic-style watercolor paintings. In this class, students will learn color theory, the use of perspective, 25 watercolor techniques, and complete a simple watercolor painting. The subject of this reference painting must be provided by the student and be a non-copyrighted image.

Free Style Weaving Marianne Vogel (beginner – intermediate) Thursdays, 1 – 4 pm January 20 and 27 Member: $75 (2-class series | materials included) Non-Member: $100 (2-class series | materials included) Leave your idea of traditional weaving at the door, and come explore a loose, relaxing “Zen” style process of weaving. Each student will create a work of art ready to hang on the wall when you finish the class. Note: Price includes class materials: a simple 14” x 18” pin-frame loom and use of weaving materials. Students are welcome to bring their own selections of yarn, fabric, ribbon, string, or other materials for weaving into their project. Weekend

WORKSHOP: Dye Transfer Silk Scarf Marianne Vogel (beginner – intermediate) Saturday, 1 – 4 pm February 5 February 19 March 12 Member: $65 per session (materials included) Non-Member: $80 per session (materials included) Using a simple dye transfer method, students in this class will transform and ordinary piece of silk into an extraordinary scarf, for daily use or a decorative touch. During the session, students will learn the process of designing and dying the scarves through the dye transfer process. The instructor will also demonstrate how students can finish their scarves at home with their choice of beads, fringe, fabric markers, etc. The opportunities are endless!

Each participant will have a wide selection of materials to choose from and should be able to make approximately 9 beads to take home for their own jewelry-making project. Instructor Biographies

Johan Bjurman is classically trained in several painting disciplines. He established Bjurman Studio specializing in commercial artwork, including several significant and nationally recognizable projects, such as designing and painting seven trompe l’oeil lunettes of Mozart’s operas which are installed at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia. Now retired, Johan spends his time in Rhode Island and Florida where he practices plein air landscape painting and exhibits his work widely.

Diane Mannion is a realistic landscape and portrait artist. Her watercolor and pastel works simultaneously capture the vivid beauty and touristy chaos of her home state of Florida. Diane studied fine art at Pratt and SUNY, and worked as a professional illustrator for over 30 years. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2011 Bowles Portrait Award and the 2012 Fine Art Connoisseur Award of Excellence. Diane’s work is exhibited in galleries throughout the United States.

Christine Broyles is a graduate of the University of South Florida with a major in fine arts and art education and a minor in science, grades 5-9. She has worked for more than 30 years in the Charlotte County Public Schools. Chris is the only original faculty member of the L.A. Ainger Middle School still teaching there today. Chris is an artist in her own right, working in many art medias including ceramics, acrylic, watercolor, jewelry, photography, sculpture, mixed media, and stained glass.

Maggie McClellan is an accomplished painter who exhibits her work nationally and abroad. She is a signature member of the Florida Watercolor Society, Gold Coast Watercolor Society, and the Miami Watercolor Society. Maggie has authored successful teaching programs across the United States, in the Caribbean, and abroad. She is the author of the popular book, The Artist’s Express – Secrets of the Obedient Brush.

Robert Broyles is an award-winning, published watercolor artist, illustrator, teacher, and co-author of Art Across the Curriculum. He earned his BA with honors in fine art and art education from the University of South Florida. In his paintings, Robert strives to use rich, sumptuous, and colorful images to help raise awareness of the beauty of the fragile world we inhabit. His work has been exhibited throughout Southwest Florida. Jeff Ellis graduated from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn NY in 1968 with a degree in Industrial Design. Upon graduation, he became a toy designer for the Ideal Toy Company and worked there from 1968 until 1971. Then, he became a designer for the Thompson-Leeds Company. Ever since Jeff has retired and moved to Florida, he has been pursuing his dream of being a sculptor. Jeff is currently working at carving wood bowls and wood wall hangings. Paul Frehe is a renowned sculptor whose clay works range from whimsical figures to social and political musings. His current work explores themes on freedom and conformity, pleasure and responsibility, and human connection to the natural world. Paul studied and practiced art in California before moving to Asheville, North Carolina in 1994.

Don Melander creates delicate, realistic landscape works in pencils and watercolors. He has been a practicing artist for more than 30 years, and has studied with internationally renowned artists Tony Couch, Robert Wade, and ChengKhee Chee. He is a member of the Lake Superior Watercolor Society, the Arrowhead Art Club, the Englewood Art Center, and the Punta Gorda Visual Arts Center. Don’s work is exhibited throughout Southwest Florida and his hometown of Duluth, MN. Nichole Moranda is an artist and native Floridian who studied at the Florida School of the Arts, MCC Bradenton, and USF Tampa, where she received her BFA in ceramics. Nichole has a focus in ceramic hand-building with a background in wheel throwing. Her ceramic work has been displayed as installations, functional pieces, and as jewelry pendants. Nicole currently has a sculpture installation, ‘Catch of the Day’ in the Englewood ArtScape Sculpture Garden. Sheryl Unwin attended The Art Institute of Boston. After years of developing her skills, she chose to share her knowledge with other artists. In 2005 she decided to enjoy the beauty of Florida living, culture, wildlife, and fabulous scenery that only the Gulf Coast of Florida can give. Her passion is to draw from people, the largest of wildlife creatures, and the smallest of domestic pets. Marianne Vogel is a fiber artist and retired advertising executive. Marianne earned her BFA from Tyler School of Art and has formal training in both fiber arts and graphic design. Marianne’s intricate art includes weaving and felt work, and reflects a fascination with repeated patterns and texture combinations. She believes happiness is directly tied to the creative process, and brings this playful philosophy to the classroom.

Become a Volunteer EAC can always use extra hands! If you are interested in becoming a volunteer at EAC to help the staff keep EAC the vibrant and encouraging creative hub that it is – please join us! EAC can use and utilize just about any skill set in some way! The following list includes areas we know we can always use the help, but please feel free to make suggestions: • • • • • • • • •

Register Early! Education classes offered each session must meet the minimum enrollment in order for the class to run. No exceptions. You can help make these programs successful by registering early.

Continuing Studies Refund Policy Digital and Studio Arts Refund Policy: If you drop a course prior to 2 business days before the first scheduled class session, you will receive a refund minus a 25% administrative fee.

Ringling College’s PreCollege program is a 4-week academic experience for high school students ages 16-18. Students are enrolled in two immersion courses for in-depth study with Ringling faculty and four core studio courses to build a strong foundation. Students can also attend a series of elective mini-workshops and enjoy a robust Student Life program. Students who complete the program successfully earn 3 college credits.
