8 Raku

Workshop:WeekendWorkshopsRaku

Saturdays, 9:30 am – 12:30 pm October 22 and 29 January 21 and 28 February 18 and 25

Member: $80 (2-session workshop | materials included) Non-Member: $115 (2-session workshop | materials included) If you want the full Raku experience, this workshop is for you. In the first session, students will create 2 hand-built objects using slab, coil, or pinch methods. The pieces will be fired to bisque. In the second session, students will have the opportunity to participate in the full Raku firing experience. This includes preparation, glazing, and pulling their bisque pieces from the hot kiln.

Learn to prepare, glaze, and fire bisque pieces in a Raku kiln. Bring up to 2 pieces (already bisque) totaling 1/2 cubic feet of kiln space. Vessels not larger than 5 - 6” diameter and 12” height work best. Get two pulls from the hot kiln. Price includes, instruction, glazes, and equipment use. (Additional or oversized pieces may be fired for an additional cost – time and space permitting.) To avoid problems with cracking, it is highly recommended that the bisque pieces used for Raku are made from stoneware with grog.

In the second session, students will apply slip and fire pots in the raku kiln. Optionally, surface designs can be added before firing. Non-Member: $130 (3-session workshop)

This workshop is designed to challenge photographers of all levels to discover the genre: wabi-sabi. Wabi-sabi is the art of finding beauty in imperfection, things simple, modest, earthy, and unpretentious. Whether your photography interest is in nature, people, still life, etc., wabi-sabi will help you to “see” with a new, keener perspective.

His work has been exhibited throughout Southwest Florida.

Mary Gaines is a self-taught artist who experimented in several mediums, including drawing, quilting, painting, clay, needlework, and several craft hobbies, before discovering her love for stained glass. She’s found that her style lies outside of the precision of traditional copper foiling and instead, Mary creates masterful mosaics. Mary likes to upcycle materials using bits of stained glass to create designs framed in old windows and repurposed picture frames. The color, sunlight, and beautiful flora and fauna of Florida keep her inspired to create her artwork.
