New: Printmaking Special Workshop Series: Monotype - Woodcut - Eco Printing Kathleen Lang, Visiting Artist Summary: This series is designed for beginners to advanced. The focus will be on earth friendly printmaking disciplines. The series will guide participants through nontoxic printing methods. Beginning with monotype students will immediately be immersed in developing free forms and shapes using various mark-making tools and stencils. It is a user-friendly way to get students comfortable with using inks, brayers, the printing press and clean-up. The prints created during this workshop can be used (optionally) during the woodblock session on the second day. The last day will be exclusively eco printing with plants and rusty objects on fabric and paper.

New: Woodblock Printmaking Course #PR100 Kathleen Lang, Visiting Artist Ringling College Main Campus Wednesday: 9 am-4 pm 1 Session: March 9 Tuition: $195 The workshop will begin with a brief introduction to the ancient technique of Japanese woodcut. Appropriate for beginners to advanced, students will learn how to safely use carving tools, select blocks for printing, papers, and inks. They will be encouraged to experiment extensively with a large selection of tools and techniques while carving their blocks. The instructor will provide handson demonstrations and work individually with students when needed. All steps including transferring an image to the block, types of inks, wood selections, paper, and hand printing processes will be covered. Students will produce a small edition of prints on Japanese paper and/ or monotypes created during the prior day’s session if they participated (Nontoxic Monotype Printmaking). This is an opportunity for beginners to learn in a non-intimidating, relaxed atmosphere and for experienced woodblock printmakers to hone skills and learn new methods.
The focus of this workshop is to encourage all levels of artists to create prints employing the free and experimental method of monotype printmaking. Students will learn about types of ink, paper, and tools while creating a series of one-of-a-kind prints. Exploration will be in mark-making which uses non-traditional elements such as sticks, fabric, sponges, and stencils—anything BUT a pencil! This opens up “creative flow” and facilitates familiarity in working with printmaking tools, an etching press, and inks. For the students registered for day two (Woodblock Printmaking), the prints produced during this workshop can be used as optional background prints for woodblock prints. Supplies are included.

New: Natural Eco Printing on Textiles & Scarves Course #PR102 Kathleen Lang, Visiting Artist Ringling College Main Campus Thursday: 9 am-4 pm 1 Session: March 10 Tuition: $195 Eco printing is the process of printing shapes and colors directly from natural elements on substrates such as fabric and paper using no printing plate or printing press as in other printmaking disciplines. Students will instead use actual objects that produce dye such as plant material or rust from metal objects. Our “ink,” which is actually dye, will be derived from these design items. The prints and color are transferred by boiling or steam forcing the dyes to release into the substrate. The workshop will begin with an introduction to the process including samples of finished work and a demonstration. Colors derived from various plant materials, types of fabrics, and tools for creation at home will be covered. Students will learn all steps involved in successful eco printing while creating a one-of-a-kind sustainable scarf or apron and one-page book to take home. Students should bring plant material collected prior to class to use in their designs. A list is linked to the online course description.

Born in Connecticut, my parents brought me to Florida in pursuit of sunshine. We settled in Sarasota; an artist community and I was exposed to art and encouraged to express myself artistically at a young age. From age eight, I also rode horses. The United States Pony Club curriculum encouraged members to teach less experienced riders and, my affinity for teaching was born. I became passionate about clay while watching my college wheel instructor create magic with material from the earth and her own two hands. It is a joy to now watch as a similar spark ignites in a new ceramics student’s eye. Teaching a budding artist to achieve a personal goal is a gift. With each new class I am able to share my passion, expand my knowledge and experience the joy of teaching. I look forward to working with you in the studio.
