A Guide to Limited Edition Buys When purchasing Limited Edition works here are a few things to remember: - Number of Edition - Matching Editions - Artist Prints

It is important to remember the lower the edition number the more collectable a piece is. This is idea comes from traditional forms of print making such as lithography and screen printing where the first print is said to be the closet to the artists hands.
Artist prints or proofs are generally more collectable than work produced in small runs. They are actually printed by the artist and considered an original work.
If you are collecting works by the same artist / designer it is worth while trying to match the edition numbers.

Small run publications are those that are produced in a limited amount.. A popular definition includes that circulation must be 5,000 or less, although in practice the significant majority are produced in editions of less than 100.
Risograph is a high-speed digital printing system manufactured by the Riso Kagaku Corporation and designed mainly for highvolume photocopying and printing.
Offset printing is a commonly used printing technique where the inked image is transferred (or “offset�) from a plate to a rubber blanket, then to the printing surface.
When printing or copying multiple quantities of the same original it is typically far less expensive per page than a conventional photocopier, laser printer, or inkjet printer.
It is most commonly associated with the commercial printing of bulk products such as newspapers and other mass produced printed materials.
Risographs look alot like photocopiers but have a process more simillar to screen-printing. They allow only one color to print on each pass during the machine, and by overprinting various colors an artist can build up compositions as he would by screen printing.
However, it can also be used for shorter run printing such as edition books and prints.
A zine is most commonly a small circulation publication of original or appropriated texts and images. More broadly, the term encompasses any self-published work of minority interest usually reproduced via photocopier or risograph on a variety of colored paper stock.

Arkitip Arkitip’s beginnings were humble. While the magazine began with a 50 copy, hand stapled run in 1999, those first copies look more sophisticated than most other “zines” you might have considered in the same category. The covers were silk-screened on corrugated cardboard and the docutek used to replicate the black & white art in the magazine rivaled the performance of most offset printers. It had a great homemade feel that was bona fide quality. Excellence in production is still of primary importance to Arkitip today. Artists contributing to the magazine respect this, as they know their art will

For me it’s just about doing it right, regardless of the size. At the end of the day I would rather see a really nice small zine then a huge shoddy hard-cover book.
“The aim is to put an emphasis on the quality and details of a book, whether that is a small photo-copied edition or a larger offset book.” A lot of the things we make are printed and bound in the studio.

I like the idea of smaller editions that may be more sought after a few years. I don’t have any desire to have the books in Barnes and Noble or any place like that. I’m trying to keep most of the books as monograms. Ones that have 75 artists and give them each 2 pages don’t do much for me anymore. I feel like you end up spending more time flipping pages then learning anything about any one of them. I would rather do an over-view of someone’s work that doesn’t have a book out yet, or really explore and illustrate a specific aspect of an artist’s work.” Eric Elms

“We love collecting rare things of all varieties.books, posters, ephemera, etc. These travel posters began as an illustration commission from Real Simple Magazine here in the US and we decided to reproduce them in limited quantities. First edition quantities of 100 were followed by a second edition of 150 for each poster. We wanted to have enough to satisfy our customer base while still keeping them feeling special and exclusive. We don’t purposefully seek out limited edition posters from certain artists per se, but rather—as I mentioned above— are collectors by nature of stuff we find inspiring.”

Giclée prints are made using digital printing technology, usually inkjet. The technology allows the production of small runs of prints. It also allows retailers to offer ‘print on demand’ services, where buyers select an image and it is printed out there and then. Digital print technology can be used by artists to create original prints, Giclées are not always reproductions.

Alife / I think it comes down more to relevance in the marketplace. If there is a product that is really something new to the genre, say a Nike air woven, at the time of it’s release, I think this is the type of product that we are interested in carrying. When the air woven dropped, it was the beginning of the sneaker craze, as most know it now. They had a product that was something really different and at the same time could be worn by people that liked sneakers. Other brands that we carry are us showing respect for what these people are doing and the commitment that goes into their product.
