aya aBesamis was one of Cosmo’s 8 Sexiest Models in 2013. She models for “Straight Shooter,” on p. 104. The uST Fine Arts graduate says, “Modeling is definitely a passion of mine. Having been exposed to the world of fashion at a young age (both her parents were once fashion models), I see it as another form of art with myself as a canvas that portrays different images.” Aya is also passionate about painting and baking—she’s joining some exhibits later this year, and has a baking business with her mom called Sucre Palette.

“To the Cosmo Girl: Believe in yourself and pursue your dreams with passion. Never push for something without throwing your heart and soul into it. Always dream big!” is a freelance writer and freshman at the uP College of law. The former Cosmo intern and former NGO worker wrote “When Change is Coming (From you),” p.86 because she believed she had an important story to tell her fellow Cosmo girls. “Writing it was a good reminder that even ordinary citizens are capable of making a difference, although it comes with sacrifices. A lot of us want to see positive changes in our country but aren’t sure how to be part of it or where to look. Our responsibility to help goes beyond our basic duties such as voting and paying taxes. We need to go the extra mile, too.”

“We Cosmo Girls are in the best position to help uplift the lives of our fellow Filipinos. If you’re reading this right now, it means you’re definitely more #blessed than most. Change doesn’t happen overnight or come from just one person. It should definitely begin with each of us because we are still a developing country, and there’s no better time to start than now.”

maika Bernardo, who’s behind “25

Things to Do This Month” p.15 says, “Since my breakup late last year, I’ve resolved to be more game and open-minded about anything. A rule I now live by is this: Try anything once and finish it. If you like it, do it again. If you don’t like it, then at least you’re sure you really don’t. Trying new things is a great way to put that principle in practice—you get to know yourself better and grow. Working on this feature made me feel like a little kid again who’s discovering new things—it’s been one of the best ways to move on and move forward.”

“When you’re way too deep into this adulting thing, you won’t want to regret not pursuing your passions. It’s never too late to start, but why not start now? Sign up for classes. look for mentors. Practice. Now na!”

sharon Que co-wrote “Making Cash Out of

Nothing At All,” p.80, with Clarissa de la Paz, with whom she wrote I Wish They Taught Money in High School. She believes anyone can make money out of their passion. “I’m living testimony!” she insists. “Now’s the easiest time because of the Internet! you just have to know how monetize your talent, passion, or skill. Today, anyone can have an international business overnight, be a writer via blogging, a singer on youtube, or a graphic artist/web designer/virtual assistant/English teacher/medical transcriptionist— all online, in the comforts of their bedroom!”

“We Pinays should all pursue—and monetize—our passions because we can! We’ll love our lives even more and find deeper fulfillment in doing so. Today, the opportunities are limitless, and everything’s within reach, we just need enough motivation and creativity to make it happen.” WWW.COSMO.PH

In the early years of Cosmopolitan Philippines, “pursuing your passion” was definitely not the buzz-phrase that it is today. Even if it was already the late 90s, it seemed that young women then didn’t have the freedom (or didn’t think they did, even if the power to own it was really in their hands, as we at Cosmo always rallied to tell them) to follow their dreams, and this included things like choosing the college course they really wanted or applying for the job that would make them happy. Torn between leading a life to please others and living life on her own terms, the Cosmo Girl struggled with going for careers in non-traditional fields which were either not held in high regard or deemed stable enough. While Pinays were familiar with the maxim that “you can be whatever you want to be,” it wasn’t really something they were raised to believe in. Almost two decades later, so much ground has been broken. Role models and life pegs to inspire you now abound. These days, there is no field you cannot study or pursue. The range of opportunities seems limitless, with the internet making so many different paths accessible to everyone. Gen Y has never had it better. So, lucky, lucky you, right? Or are you? Why do we hear about so many still grappling with their goals, or lack thereof? Why isn’t everyone availing of all these wonderful options now within reach? July’s Passion Issue can nudge (or push, depending on how seriously you take it) you in the direction you need. Start with “Anxiety and Generation Y” on p.76 to help you deal. But “What If You have No Idea What Your Passion Is?” Turn to p.32. Explore “The Path to Finding True Career Love,” p.78, then decide if you “Would You Leave a Stable Career to Pursue Your Passion?” (p.33). Is “Making Cash Out of Nothing at All” possible? (Yes, p.80!) “6 Girls, 6 Startups” (p.86) prove just that. What if your goals are of the loftier, saving-theworld kind? “When Change Is Coming (From You),” p. 82, tells you what it entails. Whatever passion or path you choose to pursue, Cosmo’s behind you all the way. Just promise us one thing: Don’t go through coasting through life just by petiks (p.128). Sayang! You owe it to yourself to partake of the very best that life has to offer. As they say, “You didn’t come this far to only come this far.”

passion moDEl! We were floored and moved by top photog and Cosmo favorite Shaira Luna when she spoke at Cosmo’s Fun

Fearless Life event in Cebu recently. The former child prodigy (she was one of the genius Promil Kids who rose to fame in the mid-90s) told us her touching story about how she struggled to break free from from her parents’ and society’s expectations. Groomed since childhood to become the country’s youngest doctor, she bravely dropped out of college to do what she really wanted—to become a photographer. Shaira inspired our Cebu readers that day to simply forge their own paths in pursuit of their dreams for a happier and more fulfilling life.

“ When people say I’m pretty, I always wonder if I’m pretty lang. I don’t like that feeling,.”

(swimsuit) negritas ph. (jumper) Forever 21.

A meeting with Hope Elizabeth “Liza” Soberano feels like a special occasion. As the Philippines’ leading lady du jour, free time isn’t something she can always afford, so when she does have a spare moment, it’s worthy of celebration. It’s her second—and consecutive—day off in a busy month and you can tell that the break, which she spent with family, has rejuvenated her. “I cook for them! Last night, I cooked dinner. I cooked penne alfredo,” she informs us enthusiastically. Today, Liza, as she often does during lighter work projects, brings her younger brother, Justin, along. It’s a crude form of hanging out, but the tightly bonded pair takes what they can get. Days right now are a marathon: a grueling schedule of whole-day tapings for her teleserye Dolce Amore (where she describes 1 a.m. as an early wrap-up), rehearsals, and endorsements commitments. “I get tired, everybody gets tired,” she shares pragmatically. She gives us a small smile. “I just cry it away for the night and the next day, I feel all right. It doesn’t mean anything; it’s just my way to release stress.” Liza, whose kind reputation off-cam has widely been

publicized, hardly ever complains. Last year, at the peak of her breakout soap opera Forevermore, she was hospitalized for five days. They later found out that she had pneumonia brought on by over-fatigue. Forevermore was a workout. The cast shuttled back and forth between Baguio and Manila, and unbeknownst to Liza, the traveling and temperature shifts weakened her immune system. When the cast had to shoot a physically strenuous episode, her body gave up. She couldn’t breathe and collapsed at the staff standby area. Still, the young actress continued working. The next day, she promptly attended a commercial shoot, where even a threehour nap couldn’t revive her spirits. The team eventually took her to a clinic; she was put on dextrose, but then sent home. It was her makeup artist, Mickey See, who drove her to the hospital some time after that. “Tito Mickey tricked me into going because he knew I didn’t want to go,” she exclaims. After she had checked out, Liza was confined to only three hours of work a day. This wasn’t what Liza imagined for herself. She didn’t spend her life waiting for the moment her face would be splattered all over major thoroughfares and appearing on TV every half an hour. She may have only become an official adult early this year, but she has a very clear picture of what could’ve been: jeans, sneakers, college (perhaps pre-law?), sports. But she’s here and, quite remarkably, on top of the world. Right below her, pushing her to heights she never imagined, is her family.

Family Values

“Where’s Justin?” Liza calls out. The people in the dressing room shrug, as if to gesture that he was all over the studio. “Pwedeng paki tawag siya?” Justin, her tall, gangly brother, rolls in about 10 minutes later. “What is it?” he asks. “Can you just stay here na lang? It’s getting dark out and I don’t want you to keep walking around,” she intones, her voice maintaining its usual gentle pace but tinged with finality. It’s barely 6 p.m. and Justin opens his mouth to protest, but sits back on the couch anyway. Liza is all of one year and six months older, but this has always been their dynamic. The Everyday I Love You star alternates between ate and mother roles. She respectfully declines to elaborate on her family life, but ever the doting sister, she lights up when she talks about her brother. “We didn’t grow up with our biological parents talaga, so we were always stuck together. I grew up with my lolo and lola whom I call Mommy and Daddy. My dad naman, I didn’t see him till I was one year old because he moved here to the Philippines,” she narrates. “It was just us [me and Justin] all the time.” Amid a rather shaky childhood, her brother was her constant— and vice versa—as well as her driving force. Dreams, she tells us, keep her motivated. At 18, Liza is allowed to dream as wildly as she wants, but her goals are surprisingly forthright—albeit much more arduous to achieve. “I have so much to accomplish for the future.” You pause to expect the usual desire for awards and status, but Liza continues

without missing a beat. “I still have to get a house for my mommy in the States. I have a lot of siblings— there are eight of us—so I have to make a life for them too.” She ponders on her words for a moment. “[This job] is tiring and draining, and it takes a lot of time… Time away from my family, time away from things I want to do, but I’m grateful that I’m here. It’s done a lot for me…for us,” she says, glancing over at her brother. Liza started modeling when she was around 12. “It was all print, no commercials. I was really shy,” she says with a chuckle, as if wondering how she ended up where she is now. “I wouldn’t even talk to people unless they talked to me. That was how shy I was!” The rest of her show biz beginnings was a whirlwind: she signed up with manager Ogie Diaz within a week of their first meeting, then auditioned for and won her first teleserye role (for 2012’s Kung Ako’y Iiwan Mo with Jake Cuenca and Shaina Magdayao) a month after that. A year later, she was comanaged with ABS-CBN’s talent pool Star Magic. The speed with which things happened barely gave the self-confessed over-thinker time to mull things over. When she does now though, she does so ruefully. “It’s bad when you think about it. I don’t get to live my life like other teenagers. When my best friends hang out, I’m not able to go.” Liza flashes her signature girlish grin. “Then I think about it again, and I’m very blessed. I’m able to provide for my family

The Cosmo Interview every day, I’m able to buy the things that other people can’t, for my family and also for myself.” Despite initial reservations to join the industry full time, Liza got over her stage fright—though she admits still feeling nervous before production numbers for A.S.A.P. (“I’m really not a dancer!”). “I started enjoying what I was doing because I wanted to help my family. Moneywise, I thought it would be a good opportunity to be able to help.”

“I’m sweet naman talaga, I’m very serene, there’s nothing bad about me, but I’m not really a girly-girl.”

Beyond beautiful

Cosmopolitan | JUly 2016

(swimsUit) negritas ph.(Jeans) zara.

Liza’s beauty has been welldocumented. She has, after all, ranked and dominated several international Most Beautiful lists. But now only a few feet away, no one can seem to look at her. It’s a sudden and strange inability, especially with someone who is probably used to being ogled at. Maybe because a glimpse simply isn’t enough; a glance would lead to a stare, and a stare is still, in most cultures, rude. Maybe because it’s all too much and everyone’s afraid that if they look too hard, she might turn out to be a mirage. But Liza is the real deal, and yes, she’s hardened to people leering. “All the time!” she yelps in a tone that is dripping with humility and genuine astonishment. The The Bet headliner understands the impact of her looks all too well—her fans remind her with praises on social media on a daily basis—but she uses that knowledge to fight against it. What surprises her is people’s fascination with her looks alone. Liza gives out a resigned sigh, like a comedian who has busted out every joke in his arsenal but only garnered laughs for a single gag. “When people say I’m pretty, I always wonder if I’m pretty lang. I don’t like that feeling,” says. “I try my best—at acting, dancing. I work hard to be good at all those things so they can say that okay, she’s pretty, but she’s also talented.” Liza is glaringly uncomfortable with this topic, but her quiet modesty is enough to be her spokesperson. Indeed, her stylist and friend Perry Tabora considers it an even bigger asset. “Liza is one of the most humble people I know,” he shares. “Regardless of how beautiful she is and how far

The Cosmo Interview she’s come, she is still the same girl I met years ago: humble, caring, always smiling even if she’s tired.” Every day is a persistent battle to be more than just a face—and her angelic features are the type that comes with expectations. Liza can accept the so-called consequences of being beautiful, but she doesn’t sit on it simply because it’s possible to be more. “Audrey Hepburn,” she squeals. “She’s the most beautiful person and she was nice inside-out. She did a lot of charity work in Africa and because she was a United Nations ambassador.” The teen queen has never had it easy in life, she’s not about to start now, and she’s especially not going to use her beauty to take shortcuts. Liza is a bad ass, even though no one knows about it. “I have this image that I’m a good girl who likes princesses, flowers, and butterflies, but I’m not,” she confesses. Liza considers her answer for a moment. “I mean, I’m sweet naman talaga, I’m very serene, there’s nothing bad about me, but I’m not really a girly-girl.” If we weren’t having this conversation, she’d most likely be at home, playing Call of Duty Infinite Warfare, a first-person shooter video game. She is also currently obsessed with the more hardcore Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2. “I love video games. I remember playing Special Force (another first-person shooter game online) on the computer when I was 12.”

“I try not to allow anyone to dictate who I am.”

Watching the sweetfaced ingénue speak animatedly about shooting up digital bad guys and her love for American—“as in the tackling kind”— football feels like watching an oddly dubbed Korean show on a local channel, but Liza isn’t done talking. She’s kept this side of her in for far too long, and now she’s bursting to let it out. She loves the Ultimate Fighting Championships (“My favorite is Georges StPierre and, of course, Ronda Rousey. I was sad when she lost, but I think she let it get to her head kasi she kept winning, ‘di ba? She didn’t train as hard as she used

to.”). She hates wrestling (“It’s fake. I don’t like it.”). She loves rap (“I’m starting to warm up to Kanye West. He can’t really sing, but he’s great at improv.”). She loves boys’ clothing (“My brother used to dress me up as a guy and we’d take photo shoots at home.”). Her eyes widen as she mentions her wish to do action films. “I want to do something na parang The Walking Dead. That’s my favorite show.” Liza was somewhat of a gremlin growing up. She was always outdoors with her bike and hoverboard and she was always moving. She points to a

scar on her knee, which she got from running around when she was seven or eight. “I fell and cut my knee. It got hooked on to a nail and the skin came off,” she recalls. “It was gross!” she adds gleefully. Now that she’s old enough to do things alone, Liza is itching for some serious adventure. She launches into another barrage—this time of her plans, her eyes once again sparkling with anticipation. “I want to try scuba

diving, bungee jumping. I want to jump off a plane with a parachute, paragliding, snorkeling,” she ticks them off with her finger. “I want to go to Sagada, too, but I don’t know if I can…yet.” She doesn’t have time for these things now, but ironically, it’s her sense for adventure that brought her to the limelight. “I love trying things out. That’s why I tried being an artista. It was something so new to me.”

Hope for the future

Liza starts talking to us about investments, thinking aloud about what financial opportunities she could look into. Right now, all of her savings are in a bank account, but she’s keen on putting them to good use. “I’m trying to look for a good investment. I also want to buy land because it doesn’t depreciate quickly.” An earnest shadow crosses her eyes. “I want to have businesses. Lots of businesses…para my family, in the future, okay na sila kahit wala na ako dito. I can’t do this forever. I don’t see myself taping 24 hours a day forever.” It’s hard to believe that Liza was technically a kid several months ago, but the industry has always been known to push people to grow up fast. “It’s hard right now when you’re at a stage when you’re trying to figure out who you are. You can’t do that when people are controlling you and telling you what you should be,” she says nonchalantly. “I try not to allow anyone to dictate who I am.” Soft-spoken but always outspoken, Liza, for example, is known for replying to social media comments— despite warnings from her friends to let them slide. At the beginning of her career, an impassioned fan of a famous love team (Liza played a third party role in their teleserye) told her to kill herself. But while she could ignore comments about herself, scathing remarks about her mother got her going. “I try to be respectful. I just told them that they don’t even know her.” “I am being who I am and telling them how I feel,” she declares firmly. “It’s important to remind these people that I’m human. What they’re saying affects me and I’m allowed to show that.” For someone supposedly in her formative years, Liza is unflappable. “I discovered that I’m a really strong woman. I don’t let things bring me down.” She shakes her head in earnest disbelief. “This generation is so overpowered by media,” she starts, saying it as though she’s removed from it—and emotionally, she definitely is. “It’s nonsense.” ■

Project: Passion.

COSMO CONVO

What if You have no idea What Your passion is?

Take my case, for example: I’ve been

working for practically a decade now and I’m currently on my eighth job. Clearly, I have not really defined what my passion is, save for knowing that I don’t want the typical desk gig. I don’t want to be stuck in a 9-to-5 (or longer) just sitting in front of my computer. I want the opportunity to travel, attend social events, meet people—just be exposed to different people, places, things, ideas. I actually found my dream job— twice. I held both for a couple of years before I let money issues take me elsewhere, and I have to admit, there are days when I regret that decision. I have tried getting back into that industry without much

success, save for the occasional writing contribution, so if there’s one thing I learned from those experiences, it’s to never let money be the deciding factor. The long hours, the occasional headaches, the lack of financial compensation— all those things don’t really matter so much if you actually love what you’re doing. So how do you find this so-called passion? I’ve realized while writing this piece that you either find your passion or it finds you. There’s always something that dominates your free time, your conversations, etc., and it dominates them without your even being conscious of it. You already know this to be true—

hint: What dominates your free time and your conversations?

32

Cosmopolitan | july 2016

you’re just ignoring it because you may not think it’s anything worth spending time on or that it’s even—gasp—a viable job option. But why not? You don’t really need to set the goal of making money by primarily doing what you love. You could take on a “normal” job and pursue your passion during your free time. It’s not such a bad idea because, like I said earlier, even “dream jobs” suck sometimes. So set aside the expectation that you will love every second of a job you pursued because it’s your passion, because let’s be realistic, you won’t. Don’t allow yourself to be limited just because you have an idea of what success is and what you’re supposed to do to achieve it. Despite this, if you’re passionate about something, it’ll feel right doing it. It will be so

ingrained into your life that you don’t even have to think about it. It’s fun and it feels natural, even if some people might think otherwise. I believe that if you have to look for what you’re passionate about, then you’re probably not passionate about anything. But more often than not, you’re probably already passionate about something. In fact, you could be passionate about a great many things, but maybe you’re just looking the other way. A child doesn’t go to the playground wondering how to find fun. The child simply goes and has fun. It should be the same with your passion. So go ahead and pursue that dream project, switch to the career you’ve always wanted, dare to be brave, but don’t expect that it’ll be smooth-sailing all the way. Still, you’ll find that if you try and do what you love and then do it really well, the rewards will be well worth it. ◼ WWW.COSMO.PH

Businesswoman There are many justifiable reasons to leave a job— growth, opportunity, convenience, etc.—but there are only a few valid reasons to leave a stable career. It takes blood, sweat, and tears to reach a point of security, and in this day and age, it would be irresponsible and naïve to completely abandon that to chase after uncertainty. I have absolutely nothing against pursuing passions, but you can be creative and be smart about it. Instead of starting from scratch, build on what you already have and know, and use the benefits of a stable career, such as options, flexibility, opportunities, connections, and resources. If that means finding another job within your field that will give you more time or capital to invest in your passion, do it. If it means gearing your career towards a direction that merges your expertise and passion, go for it! Letting go of your stability is not a prerequisite to achieving your dreams; there are endless ways to make stability work for you. Instead of leaving an established career with reckless abandon, I’d use it to get to where I really wanted to go. WWW.COSMO.PH

Eira Gemanil, 26 Graphic designer I’m not a fan of settling. Working eight hours a day, five days a week, all while feeling miserable and unfulfilled is not how I want to spend my life. I strongly believe in the idea of pursuing one’s passion and dreams, because why else would we be here? To me, pursuing your passion is pursuing happiness, contentment, and personal growth. And so, if the work you currently have is not the dream, or is not in any way bringing you closer to it, why be there in the first place? Working just for money’s sake will never be enough if you hate every moment of your work life. Or if you spend every day dreaming of another life. Financial gains don’t necessarily equal success, especially if your heart has never been into it. Having a stable job should not be a reason to keep you from pursuing your passion. I believe in pursuing your passion, and I believe in pursuing it responsibly. If you cannot leave your job now, at least do something, anything, to help you propel yourself closer to where your true passion lies. Keep doing these things until you save enough money and courage to leave your unfulfilling job and finally go for what you really want. Just don’t settle.

For a change, wear multi-colored lace instead of the usual black or white to a dressy event. Contrasting, multi-directional stripes work well together.

DOES LENGTH MATTER?

pixi H20 skindrink, P1,180. e.l.f. Contour Brush, P270.

Our minds were blown when we heard about permanent contouring. The idea: applying self tanner just like you would your contouring makeup, letting it sit overnight, and washing off the next morning to wake up to chiseled features (and a sunkissed glow) without wearing one ounce of makeup. Can you say, #WokeUpLikeThis? Here’s what you’ll need: self tanning lotion (dark brown, green, or even black based—stay away from anything orangey), moisturizer, and a blending makeup brush.

1

Start with a freshly washed face and apply your usual moisturizer. This keeps self tanner from soaking into drier areas more than others. Using a blending makeup brush, apply self tanner exactly where you would contour—sides of nose, sides of forehead (brushing back into the hairline), below cheekbones (blending up toward your temple), under the jawline, and neck. Sleep with the self tanner on and wash away in the morning. Good morning, J.Lo!

The answer to this age-old question is smashbox telephoto debatable, but when 3-in-1 Face Brush, P2,250, lets you choose talking makeup? your coverage. Apparently, it’s yes. Turns out, you can control the amount of coverage by the length of the hairs on your makeup brush. For example, the kabuki brush—a flat-tipped tool used for buffing on liquid foundation—is a popular go-to because of its densely packed, shorter hairs that easily deposit foundation on your face. So, leave your long-haired brushes for natural daytime coverage, and short-haired brushes for nighttime.

WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT STROBING We’ve learned to apply where the sun hits our face—nose bridge, cheekbones, chin. But try shedding light on these additional hot spots—laugh lines, brow bone, above eyebrows and center of lower lip. “It makes you look younger. These features recede with age. mad matte

We’re seriously crushing on the new matte textures that will be gracing our pouts in 3…2…now!

Matte lipsticks have been around long enough to kick the ‘just a fad’ status to the curb and become a firm beauty favorite. If you haven’t tried this bold, statement-making texture, now is the time—it’s smooth, moisturizing, longlasting and addictive.

The HD Matte

Traditionally, matte lipsticks have a dry consistency, so you need to be accurate with application. The applicator of the new liquid matte texture helps give more control than a traditional lipstick, and the finish is crack-free.

The Creamy Matte

The Matte Powder

It looks like a powder shadow, but this powdery lip pen by L’Oréal turns into a smooth, matte, creamy lip color when applied. The spongy applicator allows you to build color from light to intense (making ombré lips incredibly easy to perfect) with a pretty, stained effect. cOlOR it RiGHt Dreamy pinks and corals work well with this texture—the result is soft and blurred. 1 L’Oréal Tint Caresse in Peony Blossom, P350.

This texture is like butter, creating a matte finish that’s very comfortable on lips. One layer is enough for full coverage. When set, it’s stays flexible—so you can pout as much as you want without any cracks showing up on dry lips. cOlOR it RiGHt We like nudes best for creamy mattes—perfect for an understated, effortlessly sexy look. 2 NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Stockholm, P390.

The Matte That Stays

Come on over to the dark side and get the kind of staying power that laughs in the face of nights out and mornings after. Look for formulas that settle into a soft, dry finish and leave a highly pigmented stain. cOlOR it RiGHt Intense reds and deep, dark shades look very elegant in matte—and they’re lower-maintenance than their high-shine counterparts. 3 MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour in High Drama, P1,560.

The Classic Matte

Mix textures: matte lips can be beautifully complemented by other textures, such as sheer shimmer on eyelids and cheeks.

cOlOR it RiGHt The brighter the color choice, the more noticeable it is when you don’t get the perfect shape. If your hand is not the steadiest, apply lip liner first to define the lip shape and to act as a guide. 6 Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor in HD Passion, P575.

cOlOR it RiGHt Every woman needs a matte nude and a matte red in her lipstick arsenal for an undeniably chic look. 4 Inglot Bullet Matte Lipstick in 429, P895. 5 Avon Perfectly Matte Lipstick in Pure Pink, P399.

Got a beauty dilemma? Get expert advice from Cosmo’s beauty editor who has seen and tried it all!

Use protection when things heat up!

Does shaving with shower gel cause razor burn?

❝ It’s okay to use a moisturizing shower gel when shaving. In fact, what really causes those red bumps is using a dull razor (razors should be replaced every five to six shaves), shaving against the direction that hair grows (try shaving downward toward your ankles), and pressing the razor too hard against skin. ❞

What is the most natural product to use on sparse brows?

eva•nyc Therapy Session Hair Mask, P895.

Is it bad that I blowdry my hair every day?

Phytokératine Repairing Thermal Protectant Spray, P1,250.

❝ The more you use a blow dryer or iron on your hair, the more you will damage it. But you can style responsibly to minimize destruction. For example, spritz strands with a pre-styling heat protectant before blow drying. Use a repairing conditioner meant for damaged hair and treat strands to a weekly nourishing hair mask. ❞

Clinique Superfine Liner for Brows, P1,100.

❝Brow powders and gels can look too heavy on sparse brows. For the most natural look, opt for finetipped pencils and pens that allow you to draw on thin, quick strokes that resemble hair strands. To beef up barely-there brows, use a fiber mascara which will coat each strand with little fibers to create the appearance of thicker, fuller brows. ❞ Benefit Gimme Brow, P1,400.

Fun, Fearless Beauty Some of uS think we’re too sensitive for a scrub. And if you’re acne-prone, a peel just seems insane. But exfoliation can benefit every skin type. “In addition to revealing fresh skin cells, exfoliating removes dead cells from pores, making them appear smaller,” says derma Rachel Nazarian, MD. Makeup also looks better, says aesthetician Stalina Glot. “It’s like sanding a wall before you paint.” The other major perk: “Removing the buildup enhances your skin’s ability to absorb everything else, from acne medicine to antiaging serum,” says Dr. Nazarian. Find the routine that’s right for your type and get glowing.

mY skin’s DrY. Will Exfoliating strip it?

No—in fact, flakes inhibit the full penetration of moisturizer. “Oil gets trapped, causing tiny, pimple-like bumps,” says Glot. Your best bet: gentle chemical exfoliators (an AHA-rich serum dissolves bonds between dead cells) or a light facial scrub (Doll Face’s [1] uses jojoba beads). Follow with a hydrating lotion, every two or three days. weekly treatment: Transform skin from dull to dewy with this Kiehl’s mask [2] that exfoliates with crushed cranberry seeds while turmeric extract leaves skin brighter and glowier.

Gritty scrubs are definitely off limits, but most people can benefit from a mild, short-contact exfoliating product. Consider a cleanser or toner rich in fruit or plant enzymes, twice a week, to deep clean gently, like Mario Badescu’s toner [5]. weekly treatment: Use a cool, wet washcloth in circular motions to loosen and sweep away dead skin cells.

What shoulD i Do for mY normal skin?

Normal usually means combo—an oily T-zone and dry cheeks—which can benefit from the Goldilocks of exfoliators: baking soda. In a waterless, powder-cleanser form like Murad’s [6], it’s easy to adjust the strength: Add less water for a stronger scrub (perfect for the T-zone) and more for a gentler one (ideal for the cheeks). Do this two or three times a week. weekly treatment: Home peels are an option for problem-free skin. Start with a glycolic-acid concentration below 10 percent and slowly work your way up to stronger products. Try Altchek MD [7], which help diminish fine lines and fade spots.

make Vanilla sex Hotter

GO AHEAD, BE BASIC IN BED. HERE’S WHY THE HOTTEST SEX YOU’LL EVER HAVE MIGHT ALSO BE THE SIMPLEST.

Love, Lust & Other Stuff

(text) rose sUrnow. (photos) nick onken. (illUstrations) eirian chapman.

my preferred sexual positions can skew toward the ambitiously acrobatic. Should you care to look inside my bedside drawer, you’d find more accessories than an HSN host’s forearm—handcuffs, black rubber tape, and electrically charged fingertip vibes, to name a few. The only aspect of sex that I’m unfussy about is gender—my own and my partners’. I actually chronicle my crazy experiences in my new book, Action: A Book About Sex. So here’s a fact you might not expect from me: Some of the hottest encounters I’ve ever had were regulardegular, conventional-as-air vanilla sex. Yes, here I am championing the most basic way of going at it. But toys are great, you say! Or, what about that insecure voice in the back of my head that says the way I fuck is not sexy enough? Well, that voice can borrow my electrical tape for its mouth. When I think of the best sex I’ve ever had, I recall how it felt, both in my body and in my brain. I’m picturing how one dude traced my body with his hand sooo slowly or the girl who liked to leave in the middle of parties to go home together, right then. Skipping out on all the extras makes it easier to be present and focus on how bad I really want my partner. I mean, think of the steamiest movie sex scenes, like in Blue Is the Warmest Color or Cruel Intentions. Save for a bed, all the characters need to have extremely hot-looking sex is each other—urgently. My current boyfriend, J., isn’t really into fetishistic sex. For the most part, J. is steadfastly vanilla—and he’s excellent in bed. Relationships thrive when there’s sexual openness, and that means not just his willingness to test out my kinky tendencies but my acknowledgment that his unfussy preferences are worthy of respect too. This agreement will do more for your sex life than forced boundary pushing. It also leads you to the kind of gotta-have-you, nowhips-required sex that’s technically vanilla but feels anything but. Here’s why. WWW.COSMO.PH

2 You can really focus on the feelings.

1 it highlights a sense of urgency. If you’re in such dire need of tearing each other’s clothing off right now, you’re probably not pausing to dress up in fishnets/break out the sex swing/come up with a crazy role-play scenario. What could be sexier than wanting—and being wanted by—another person so fervidly that it’s all you can do to get to the bedroom? Here and there, I find that needing to bone a person ASAP doesn’t even allow for positions beyond missionary. Immediacy leads to sex that won’t leave anyone wishing it had been anything but what it was. Hot, passionate, and perfect.

When you do without contraptions, you and your partner will be focused on each other’s nuances—instead of worrying about whether you’re cycling through all the buzz modes on your vibe. When I’m having the best-ever sex with J., I’m rarely planning my next move. Instead, I’m zeroed in on the rad things we’re actually doing and responding accordingly. I can take stock of how he reacts when I touch harder or more lightly, slower or faster, or in a particular place. Our bodies are our toys! Just pay attention to how your boo breathes, moves, and reacts to get him to an amazing O.

Vanilla Sex PoSitionS— With a tWiSt!

in missionary, hold his shoulders, and wrap your legs around his waist. Use that leverage to swing upward, transitioning to girl-on-top. the quick change means he’ll be hitting new spots inside you. once you’re on top, you can get your grind on.

With SPrinkleS

kneel with your feet under your body, and reach forward with your hands in front of you, like in child’s pose. arch your hips as high as you can as he enters you from behind. the position seems typical, but the direct action with your G-spot is anything but. and bonus: He’ll love the view.

With WhiPPed Cream

place two pillows under your booty while in missionary. the altered point of entry will make you feel like you’ve invented a whole new kind of action. take away one of the pillows for a new feel.

3 it reminds you that hot sex doesn’t have to be kinky. If you’re just getting comfortable in bed together, you don’t need to doubledown on dirty talk or pretzel-like positions to feel incredible. Just saying “I love it when you touch me like that” is insanely hot. It’s also a vote of confidence: It makes me feel even closer to J. knowing that we can be so into each other without (literally) bending over backward in bed.

4 if you’re usually into a different kind of sex, going back to basics can be a nice diversion. If you’re into being experimental and naked at the same time, choosing to have sex in its most stripped-down format is one of the most transgressive and surprising things you can do for yourself and your partner(s). I like having conventional sex because, after years of freakydeaky behavior, it

Get in a sexy state of mind now feels more subversive than entanglements that necessitate a trip to a sex shop first. (And let’s be real—that shit can get really expensive.) It’s refreshing to take a breather from reaching into the nightstand drawer every time I want to have interesting, intimate, standout sex. It even increases my appreciation for those times when I do want to break out those electrically charged fingertip vibes.

Making your environment sex-positive helps your brain feel that way too. Worried about your roommate walking in on you? Lock the door, or pick a time when you know she’s away. Nervous that Mom might call? Set your cell to “do not disturb.” That way, all you have to think about is the good feels between you and your lovah. dreSS the Part

We all know that wearing a hot pair of cheekies will make you feel sexy AF. And a 2011 survey shows that some women who wore fug undies (you know, the ones with the broken elastic that you’ve had since…high school?) said it actually busted their mood. why you need to have the mini talk

Forget having the talk. here’s why lowerpressure convos are the new road to committed.

66

Cosmopolitan | JUly 2016

you meet up, and you keep hooking up, until one day, after months of text deciphering and friend consults, you have the big Define the Relationship Talk. Then you’ve passed Go—you have an Official Boyfriend. That may be how relationships traditionally go, but lately, more women are forgoing one DTR talk and instead having several mini talks about relationship status on the way to coupledom. “I’ve had mini talks going into my last six relation-

ships,” says Chelsea, a 27-year-old public-health scientist. “I don’t rush straight to boyfriend and girlfriend. I’ve had smaller talks about whether we want to keep seeing each other, if we’re sleeping with anyone else, and if we should deactivate our online-dating accounts, all before we made it official. Breaking it down into smaller steps means that final convo isn’t so scary.” “There’s this push among millennials to be a bit more WWW.COSMO.PH

Smaller steps make that final boyfriend/ girlfriend convo less scary.”

casual about relationships. In my field research, I find people have all kinds of smaller talks with their partners, about whether they’re exclusive or what their label is,” confirms Ellen Lamont, PhD, an assistant professor of sociology at Appalachian State University, who studies gender norms in relationships. “These mini talks allow people to negotiate some type of commitment without being official right away.” For a generation that craves novelty and

validation (think of the buzzy high we get from Insta Likes and Tinder matches) and often side-eyes the notion of real commitment, there are compelling reasons to opt for the slow roll. “Having mini talks keeps things lower-stakes—it’s easier for you to get out if you want,” Lamont says. “Millennials seem to prefer exploring their options when they start seeing each other—not because they only want to hook up but because they reject the idea of

putting constraints on dating.” Women are often painted as indiscriminately pining for commitment. But in reality, plenty of women would never give up their options right away. When you have zillions of guys at your fingertips, it can seem nuts to jump into a DTR talk until you’re positive a dude is worth it. Counterintuitive as it may seem, casual dating is actually an indicator that you care a lot about a relationship’s quality and stability. When

you’re the slow-todecide one stressing over whether a fling has a future, mini talks give you time to evaluate your feelings. It’s not about sitting around while he figures his shit out—it’s about having clarity on where the relationship is going for you. “Having any kind of conversation about your status, instead of waiting for what he’s thinking, is empowering,” Lamont says, adding, “There’s a narrative that men drive relationship progression, but in my research, it’s often the women. They’re very proactive.” And if you’re dealing with a garden-variety commitmentphobe, mini talks help you manage him. After all, if you ask a guy to be your BF and he gets scared and ghosts you, well, that’s that. But if you casually suggest deactivating OkCupid accounts or ask if he’s hooked up with anyone else, you can figure out a middle ground even when your answers don’t match up. “You

probably don’t want to say, ‘I want you to be my boyfriend’ if he hasn’t even deleted Tinder. But by talking only about where he’s at with his Tinder, you better protect yourself,” points out Emma Tessler, cofounder of The Dating Ring, an online matchmaking service. Happily, mini talks let you do all that without the awkward confrontation of The Talk. Checking in with a guy about where you stand is also… kind of sexy. “When I have mini talks, I’m elongating that excitement when you first get into a relationship. It means we have even more firsts, and I get an extra flutter when, say, I find out he doesn’t want to sleep with anyone else either,” Chelsea says. Given how much we love validation, that’s a plus. “It’s nice to have repeated conversations that confirm your feelings,” Tessler says. Lauren, a 22-yearold student, credits mini talks with giving her current relationship a great foundation. Unlike her previous BF, who asked to get serious after the first date, Lauren loved how this relationship built gradually and how she had a voice in it. “All those mini talks made it so much easier to dive in once we were ready.” ■

the Biggest exCuse We make for men

“Emotionally unavailablE” is thE buzzy tErm EvEryonE usEs whEn dudEs won’t commit. but rEally, it’s total bs.

the other Weekend, my friend had a drunken bar make-out with a dude who turned out to have a “sort of” girlfriend. Before that, she spent a few months dating a man who—dickhead alert—was secretly married with a child. “My therapist thinks I’m only attracted to emotionally unavailable men,” she told me afterward. This pissed me off, because people used to suggest that to me too, judgmentally, like I was broken and masochistically handpicking guys who’d poke at my wounds. Now that I’m in a healthy relationship, I look back at all my past relationships and realize what BS that “emotionally unavailable” pronouncement is.

Blame-y and 1 it’s Baseless The idea that we go after emotionally unavailable partners is a put-down used to shame and blame single women. It puts the onus on us to choose more wisely next time: You idiot, get it together. You’re never going to find a man if you keep chasing after emotionally unavailable ones.

68

Cosmopolitan | JUly 2016

When really, my friend isn’t single because she was attracted to two men who weren’t ready to commit to her. She’s single because she hasn’t met the right guy yet. And yet most women who are actively dating have had the accusation lobbed their way. “The first time I heard it was my sophomore year of college, when I kept falling for guy friends who were more interested in building relationships with their new frat bros than with me,” recalls Elizabeth, a 31-year-old editor. But isn’t falling for people who aren’t quite right for you just…dating? “If women are looking for a long-term commitment, they might have to date a lot of guys first before they find one who’s in the same place,” points out Joanne Davila, PhD, a professor of clinical psychology at Stony Brook University who studies healthy relationship skills and is coauthor of The Thinking Girl’s Guide to the Right Guy. “Some guys can be perceived as emotionally unavailable when, really, they’re just looking for different things.” Then there are the guys who actively take advantage of your emotions and seek out turbulence in a relationship. But unless a

guy is kicking puppies or otherwise exerting overtly asshole-ish behavior when you first lay eyes on him, you can’t instantly tell he’s an asshole. (The scary truth: Assholes look just like the rest of us!) “When you first meet somebody, typically there aren’t huge warning signs—people are on their best behavior,” Davila says. “It takes a little while to see someone’s true colors and to find the right person.” And BTW: No one is asking men to open up and become more emotionally available. And you know what? Those sweet, friendly, emotionally available men you passed up because they had weird mannerisms or bad facial hair or a resemblance to your ex—they probably think you’re emotionally unavailable. Mind blown.

sounds less aggressive and more adult to label the person emotionally unavailable.” But it’s a cipher…and meaningless. Look, some men really are emotionally unintelligent—bad at expressing their feelings and hopeless at caring about yours. (Our collective definition of masculinity might be partly to blame. “In our culture, there are different rules about displaying emotions for men and women,” Slotter points out.) And if you keep spending time with these kinds of emotionally stupid partners and (this is key) it bothers you and you’d rather be with someone empathetic, it’s worth defining what you want: a partner who’s caring, emotionally intelligent, and into you (and not afraid to show it). Breaking down exactly what you weren’t getting from past relationships—those all-important capital-N Needs—can help you weed out the losers and find your catch. Explaining away the whole mess by saying he’s emotionally unavailable? Slightly less empowering.

place. “People like to see themselves positively,” says Erica Slotter, PhD, an assistant professor of psychology at Villanova University who researches identity and relationships. “Sometimes we use emotionally unavailable as a scapegoat at the end of the relationship. We say the demise was the other person’s fault, allowing us to feel good about ourselves.” Just ask Michelle, a 33year-old optometrist: “When a relationship didn’t work out, I used to tell people ‘He screwed me over’ when actually we just weren’t right for each other,” she says. “After a split, the guy usually says the girl is crazy. I think it’s a similar attitude, only it

it makes us stick 3 around When We should move on

it sounds adult to say emotionally unavailable, but it’s meaningless.”

When I was younger and newly single, I dated a spate of men who cited episodic depression as the reason they couldn’t hang out. They mentioned it in soft, apologetic e-mails using figurative language. One said he’d been “in a cocoon.” The other explained he gets “buried under life.” Around that time, a friend’s love interest told her he’d been MIA because “when life gets crazy, I just hit stop.” We listened and felt empathy, and we carried these reasons to our nay-saying

girlfriends, the ones furrowing their brows and going “You haven’t seen him in how long?” Of course, in every case, the episodic depression actually wound up being due to “feeling things out with a new woman.” But those e-mails had given us hope! A change in the status of their emotional availability seemed days away. Now, of course, I can’t stop face-palming. These dudes were literally telling us they were not about to meet our needs, and we used it to justify sticking around! This is all too common, says Davila: “People spend a lot of time hoping other people are going to change,” she says. “When you keep making excuses for why something’s not working, it’s disastrous.” A danger with this term is that it’s inherently a temporary thing. He’s emotionally unavailable right now, but if I just wait it out until he gets over his ex or breaks up with his girlfriend, he’ll finally become available! But it usually doesn’t work that way. We attribute his unwillingness to commit to outside circumstances (rather than to his own choice, which is what it is—if he wanted to be with you, he would) and waste so much time waiting around for a man’s emotional availability to change. “I still have guys in my life who I feel will ‘pull out of it’ and realize I’m the best thing ever and come running,” Michelle admits. “A girl can dream.” Even more fun than dreaming? Continuing to meet people who might delight or challenge or adore you, until you meet the one whose emotional availability is in line with yours. Get it, girl. ■ JUly 2016 | Cosmopolitan

Falling in love is so easy. Too easy, right? You think it would be like that forever. But as the months go on you find it’s just so much easier to become the bad guy. It’s easier to ignore, to hurt, to bear a grudge, to dwell on resentment, to think of what-could-havebeens, to think of other people, to think only of ourselves, to not think at all; to do all the things that draw out, slowly, the blood from those passions, to kill a love with a death of a thousand cuts. It’s tiring to be in love all the time. I should know—by the tail end of our relationship, my now-ex was looking pretty peaked. She wasn’t just tired, per se. She was also tired of me.

Maybe I was too busy for her. Work was tough. I’d gotten promoted, which meant a metric ton of new work, requisite panic attacks, and waking up in the morning still wearing my office clothes because I’d been too exhausted to change the night before. I’d promised to call her every day, even during overtime; somehow that always got rescheduled. Maybe her dad’s attitude was rubbing off on her. Tito hated my guts, hated them ever since I had one of my first dinners over

at their place, hated them even more when he found out that his little girl, her beautiful chin jutting forward, told him that I was her boyfriend and there was nothing he could do about that. But the dad’s dislike never really waned, and that chin jutted out a little less each year, it seemed. Maybe our attitudes about religion were ultimately incompatible. Maybe I wasn’t ambitious enough about getting money to really invest in any sort of future. Maybe I did think about other people too much. Maybe I’d truly become less and less easy to love, and harder and harder to forgive. But then again, I could turn the blame around,

and fixate on everything that she did wrong, and conveniently transform self-pity into righteous fury. This was on her. I was the one who’d gotten tired of her. It was my passion that had died, and she’d been the one to deliver the icy execution. That’s really how these kinds of relationship post-mortems go: a weighing-scale blame game trivia show of whofell-out-of-love-withwhom-and-why. Those first few months (or years, or decades, depending on your constitution) of love feel like such a vibrant, living thing—to look back at them when nothing remains but white ashes is to wonder where it all went wrong. My ex and I, we’re still friends. Not good ones, but we’re cordial. When we see each other, there’s good-natured bantering about what used to be, and why I was the worst, and why she was the worst, and boy were we smart or what about getting out of that nightmare. Sometimes the laughs are forced. Sometimes the passion that we’d so effectively and easily euthanized sits between us like a corpse. WWW.COSMO.PH

SEX Q&A No-BS responses to questions you can only ask Cosmo

Q I get super sleepy after I orgasm. I thought this happened only to dudes! What’s the deal?

Nodding off? Totally normal!

A

While the lore goes that men morph into hibernating grizzlies 10 seconds after sex, it’s not totally unheard of for you to feel like snoozing too. “When you orgasm, several hormones are released that have a relaxing effect,” say ob-gyn Lee Ellen Morrone, MD. So that crazy rush of oxytocin and vasopressin that come along with your O is probably what’s making you all sleepy-bear too. Or depending on the friskiness of your sex, it could just be that your body is beat. “If you’re using muscles you don’t typically use, sex can be an intense workout,” Dr. Morrone says. Either way, it doesn’t mean that the sex was so boring, it lulled you both into a deep slumber. In fact, it probably means that the sex was amazzzzzzz-ing…and that you’re bound to have some sweet, sweet dreams.

Q I’m straight, but I always get turned on by lesbian GIF porn. Does that mean I’m not actually as straight as I thought I was? A Nope! “A woman can be turned on by women, and it

doesn’t make her a lesbian,” says sex therapist Diana Wiley, PhD. Lesbian porn tends to have plotlines that involve women getting pleasured, which is probably why you find it more erotic, says Wiley. If girl-on-girl makes you hot, it could be that it just helps you understand your desires, whether you’re with a girl, a guy, or a GIF.

Q Do I still need to ask A Even if you’ve known your brother’s super smokin’ friend forever and ever or you realize that you and your swipe-right took chem my guy about STIs if together in college, there’s still no way you can tell if he’s STI-free just I’ve known him for a by looking at him. In fact, a 2015 study in the Canadian Journal of Human Sexuality found that when someone seems familiar to us, we while before we subconsciously see that person as being more similar to ourselves. started hooking up? I And if you’re fairly sure you don’t have an STI, you assume the other person doesn’t have one either. The point is, the only way you’ll find mean…I’d know by out is if you ask or suggest you both get tested. Ease the awkwardness by making it an “I’ll show you my results if you show me yours” game. now, right? Then you can stop looking and get to touching!

AsK HIm AnYtHInG Advice from cosmo’s very own guy guru

Nope, not into that.

A

I’d recommend dropping a few casual “but that’s not me” hints when something kinky comes on TV. As in, “I’m all for sexy movies, but the spanking in Fifty Shades doesn’t do it for me.” Just remember there’s no shame in your game. You’re not a prude. You have preferences and are that much cooler for owning them.

Q I went on a fantastic date with this

girl. After hours of great conversation, she mentioned that she’s “not a big texter.” It was only the first date, and we’ve barely texted at all. Is she already making excuses for being a bad communicator? Is this a warning sign?

74

CosmopolItAn | juLy 2016

A IMHO you

shouldn’t read too much into this. You had “hours of great conversation” on your first date. If those IRL sparks are real, who cares if her emoji game is off point?

Q I met these brothers and hooked up with one of them. I thought I picked right, but now I feel like I effed up. the other guy is hotter and funnier. Is it too late to switch? A Oh, brother. If

you’ve been with one, it’s too late to go with his bro. You can try (ASAP!) but there will likely be consequences. Better to move on…maybe to an only child.

Q I’m starting to feel like every guy I date expects crazy, out-of-the-box sex—to the point where I feel like a freak for only being into vanilla stuff. Is there a way I can let dudes know that ahead of time, before we even make it into the bedroom, while still seeming sexy and not like a wet blanket?

Drive & Dash Put the brakes on car-related anxiety by knowing exactly what these warning lights mean.

ENGINE WARNING LIGHT

BRAKE SYSTEM/FLUID WARNING LIGHT If it’s still on after disengaging your handbrake, it can mean that your car’s out of brake fluid or your brake system is malfunctioning.

Get your car checked right away! Driving around any longer can lead to further—and potentially irreparable—damage.

BATTERY CHARGE WARNING LIGHT There may be something wrong with your car’s electrical system if this light stays on.

Tip: Take note of the last time you had your batteries replaced— your car may suddenly die on you when you need it the most!

GAS LIGHT This means you’re already using your car’s reserve fuel, so make sure to gas up ASAP.

OIL WARNING LIGHT You need to avoid low oil level and pressure at all costs. If left unattended, this can lead to very expensive engine damage.

POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT This will most likely be accompanied by difficulty in moving your steering wheel.

Tip: To know which side your gas tank is on, check which direction the arrow beside the light is pointing toward.

DOOR OPEN WARNING LIGHT For your own safety, make sure all your doors are closed (and locked!).

AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT A faulty airbag can either deploy without any impact (which can cause an accident) or not deploy during an accident (which can cause further injuries).

Bridgestone Philippines

COOLANT WARNING LIGHT Refill your coolant tank, stat! Your car may overheat if it doesn’t have enough coolant.

Even teaching odd classes “when I can find them” can’t cover rent and put food on the table. This year, after yet another unsuccessful audition, she had an anxiety attack. “I collapsed,” she says. “I couldn’t breathe; I was hyperventilating and had chills.” A frightened roommate rushed her to the hospital where doctors got her to breathe slowly. The attack passed—but she’s moved back home. “I can’t believe I’m back...But lots of my friends never left home and it’s amazing how many I’ve discovered are on antidepressants, now that I am too—even those doing engineering. There’s just so much pressure and stress.” Anxiety among Generation Y—those born between 1980 and 2000— is reportedly soaring. “I see too many Gen Ys at my practice,” says psychologist Lisa Grant-Stuart. According to a UK charity YouthNet, one in three Gen Y women and one in 10 men have panic attacks, and in a 2013 US survey by the American College Health Association, 57% of female students and 40% of male students reported an episode in the past year of being so anxious and depressed, they struggled to function. Writing in Psychology Today, psychology professor Gregg Henriques says that evidence suggests that college students today have greater levels of psychopathology and stress than ever before.

ANXIETY

AND GENERATION

Y

The biggest danger of anxiety and depression is risk of suicide. Excessive worry has also been linked to cardiovascular disease, depression, OCD, panic attacks, hypochondria, and general anxiety disorder. “Excessive worry produces unrealistic and irrational anxieties about what should not make a ‘normal’ person worry,” says psychologist Hanan Bushkin. “It brings loss of a sense of control, which can lead to the development of an anxiety disorder.” So, what’s behind it— and what can you do?

Hard technical skills such as engineering and the sciences are still the most marketable. Fight the Anxiety Stay positive. Study further: if you have an arts degree, add an MBA or a teaching qualification, but be sure you’re in a field you’re interested in, says Van Broekhuizen, because lack of passion shows. Take sensible steps to protect and insure yourself and your possessions, then do something to help counter underlying problems such as poverty. Share your skills, mentor someone, give time to shelters. Resist the urge to escape in alcohol, drugs, or unsafe sex, which are on the rise and make anxiety worse.

For Gen Y, technology is an integral part of life—last year, a US study found female students spend,

on average, 10 hours a day on cellphones, and men, eight. Constant connectivity breeds comparisons and pressure to compete and keep up not just with friends but with the likes of Kylie and Kendall. It also breeds fear of missing out. Fight the Anxiety Remind yourself that people are projecting their carefully edited ‘best selves’ on social media and the reality of their lives, including their happiness, can be far different. Don’t get into a FOMO arms race—when others update their status, don’t try to retaliate, as this heightens

Anxiety can be genetic and part of your temperament, but upbringing plays a role too. If your parents, like many of Gen Y, constantly praised you to build selfesteem, you may worry about letting them down by not fulfilling their expectations. If they were overprotective or neglected or abused you, you may feel unable to cope on your own. Fight the Anxiety Unburden with sympathetic friends— preferably in real (not screen) time. Loving touch promotes the release of oxytocin, which counters the negative effects of stress hormone cortisol and leads to feelings of contentment and calm, decreasing anxiety, says psychologist Elise Fourie. Develop pastimes you enjoy, and get active— exercise releases feel-good endorphins and helps you be in the ‘now’, as does meditation.

ou know that phenomenon where you look at a clock, then look away for at least an hour, then you look back—but the time’s only changed by five minutes? the soul-suCking Customer serviCe Job Whether it’s taking calls for the customer service line at a bank, working in retail, or manning the front desk as a receptionist, chances are your working life started with a role that meant serving (and trying to be polite to) cranky customers. This type of job is a rite of passage

for most of us, and if nothing else, it pays the bills, right? “President Ronald Regan used to say that if you come upon a room full of horse manure, start shovelling, because there’s probably a pony in there somewhere. The same is true of a crap job—if you dig, you’ll probably find at least one good thing,” says Michele Woodward, career strategist and author of I Am Not Superwoman: Further Essays on Happier Living. This role’s no different—it teaches you skills for every subsequent job. “You learn patience and what works when you have to deal with customer service people down the road,” says Woodward. But the Soul-Sucking Customer Service Job can also take a toll on your sanity. So when you find yourself hating every single customer on sight, it’s time for you to move on.

the good-on-paper Job This crap job is a bit like that guy you broke up with last year: he’s perfect—in theory. He’s cute, funny, and clever, but the spark isn’t there. This job is much the same. It ticks all, or at least most of the boxes (it’s in a field you studied for, impressive job title, decent pay...), but in reality, it’s boring and doesn’t leave you fulfilled or motivated. It’s easy to feel guilty for classifying the Good-On-Paper Job as a crap one, but if it’s not for you, don’t feel pressured to settle. “The good thing is that in a job like this, you learn to balance your life,” says Woodward. “Because if the job is a bore, you don’t have to work 10-hour days. You could take an art class at night, or an exercise class in the morning. Or find a new job!” Observing other areas of the firm may open up other careers. COSMOPOLITAN | JULY 2016

Let’s all agree on something first— we are all born with a passion and a burning desire to do something, something that excites us and gives us a natural high. Whether it’s a personal interest or a hobby, there is always something we are willing to do for free. The good news is, we can also make money out of our passions. You can begin earning money right now. You can do it either full time or part-time. Some jump into it full time, either starting a business focused on it or finding a job involving their passion. Some work it in from the sidelines. One friend built a home-based baking business that eventually led to her putting up her own macaron cafe when she saw the demand. Another friend wanted to put up her own school, so she first got a job as an elementary teacher, learned the ropes, then finally put up a pre-school of her own. WWW.COSMO.PH

SHARON: I discovered I had a gift for sales when I was still in school. As soon as I realized I had this talent, I grabbed every opportunity that presented itself, selling all sorts of things like shoes, shirts, toys, supplements, even firecrackers! CLARISSA: For me, it was teaching and sing-

ing, but I also loved my job in advertising. So I sang and taught part-time. I had a full-time job from Monday to Friday. Then,on Saturdays, I taught at the university I graduated from. And when I had free time, I accepted singing gigs.

Once your vision is clear, start right away. Start small. Start simple. Just start.

DO

● Create a business plan

and a marketing plan. ● Study your competition. ● Get a mentor who is an expert in the field you want to pursue. ● Continuously improve your craft.

DON’T

Stop analysis paralysis. Don't get trapped trying to perfect your plan. A perfect plan will always be in beta mode. Start, then rework your plans along the way.

More good news: You can start with minimal, or even zero capital. Whether it’s a product or a service you'd like to offer, challenge yourself to make money out of nothing.

As soon as you begin your venture and actually start earning money from it, the gains are priceless: enjoying the journey, pursuing what you’re passionate about, and living a fulfilling, joyful life.

capital, consider using other people’s money by getting an investor or a bank loan. ● Make sure you have a sound business plan and make calculated risks. ● While following your heart will surely get you excited, you need to sit down and really think things through.

DON’T

If you seriously want your backyard business to evolve into a full-blown one, restrain yourself from spending your earnings right away. Save, come up with a business model, let your funds circulate. Your business will need you to have good money habits.

SHARON: It is very important to be clear about

why you are doing this, and that it’s a business even if it started as a hobby and just for fun. Know that while you spend on a hobby, business should bring in money.

CLARISSA:There’s a part of me that’s still scared to make the things I’m passionate about my only source of income. I have days when I’m not as inspired and don't like to be forced into doing things I love just because I need the money. I don’t want to feel pressured to beat deadlines

passion grew to include real estate, billboard advertising, and publishing. Although I’m still on my way to achieving all my dreams and business goals, I am loving this journey.

However, these things do not come without any challenges. Your biggest obstacle is not believing that you can put a price tag on your skills, talents, and passions. Do not shortchange yourself. Know your worth and learn to ask for a fair price. Another common drawback is not wanting to or claiming that you don’t know how to sell your products or services. Every day, you need to sell yourself, whether for your job or in your relationships. So, get over the fear of selling. Finally, you will need to be moneysavvy. The big bucks won’t come at once. You will need to persevere as there will be birthing pains and rough edges at the onset. However, getting through them will be a reward in itself. There will always be challenges and obstacles—in business, in your career, and in life in general. But if you are passionate about what you’re doing, the rough ride can also be a joyride. ◼

Need To Know

When

CHANGE IS COMING (FROM YOU)

WHAT THEY DON’T TELL YOU ABOUT WORKING TO CHANGE THE WORLD Always dreamed of making a difference? No other generation has been more driven to improve the plight of others than millennials. Former Cosmo intern Amie Perez joined an NGO to do just that. Here, she delivers the lowdown on everything you need to know to handle your expectations vs. reality. A woman pounds on her keyboard at the speed of light. Her earphones do the talking for her: Don’t talk to me, I’m busy. In the next room are three young professionals. One of them sorts out office supplies and cuts up pieces of paper. The second counts condoms. I'm the third, and I take a step back and observe everyone. I tell myself, This is change. This is where it starts, this is where it all happens. It's been going on long before we had the most divisive, meme-fuelled national elections. More than one person being expected to bring change, thousands of tireless, hardworking people have been in the business of bringing positive change to a country that badly needs it. None of us had to wear Spandex and capes; none of us had to wield weapons chasing bad guys around town. And neither do you, if you want to go down the path of changing the world.

Three years ago, I decided to move to Puerto Princesa, Palawan, to work for a non-government organization (NGO) called Roots of Health, locally known as Ugat ng Kalusugan. My job description entailed teaching young girls and boys about sexual and reproductive health, in response to the high teen pregnancy rates and the growing number of cases of sexually transmitted infections in the area. Whatever cause you wish to champion, working for it can be fulfilling yet frustrating, challenging yet sometimes mind-numbing, inspiring yet disillusioning. Here are a few lessons I learned while trying to be a full-time modern-day rank-andfile superhero.

CHANGE IS BORING… UNLESS YOU CAN SEE THE BIGGER PICTURE.

A typical day in the life of a humanitarian worker doesn’t always look as glamorously gritty as it does in political ad montages. It’s not always as theatrical as people taking to the streets to overthrow an oppressive regime. It’s not as photo-op-worthy as Angelina Jolie hanging out with refugee kids, or Emma Watson making a rousing speech for the United Nations. It can, at times, be just as boring as any other office job, since most projects are planned, developed, and evaluated at conference tables, regular office desks, or next to a

photocopying machine. In nonprofit work, especially in smaller, grassroots organizations, one’s job isn’t always limited to whatever you signed up for. I signed up to teach sex education, which I always thought was super cool. However, I also ended up watching over and teaching toddlers while their mothers attended maternal health classes. I also taught financial literacy classes, presented in a conference, produced a radio show, figured out how to input formulas on spreadsheets, photocopied and cut questionnaires, dealt with brownouts and water shortages, answered text messages, received the occasional sermon from my bosses…the list went on. Be the change you wish to see!

be less materialistic, and I tried to live below my means as much as I could. I bought clothes at the ukay-ukay. I made up for lost income by doing freelance work on the side. Contrary to what a lot of middle- to upper-class people might believe, our poorest kababayans don’t always want handouts—they want opportunities. And if they are capable of making the most out of the opportunities they’re given, no matter how limited, then so can any of us. Money was hard, yes. But by the end of my first year in Palawan, I was able to save enough to take my first trip abroad—a month-long backpacking trip around Southeast Asia—something I never had the chance to do when I was working in high-paying jobs.

CHANGE CAN BE A HATE-MAGNET…

Half the time, especially when I was in the classroom and witnessed students getting that lightbulb moment upon learning something new, I felt the most alive I’d ever been. As for the other half, it was a conscious, constant effort to remind myself why I even bothered with the most mundane, painful tasks. “The things I do for love” would be my mantra.

CHANGE IS EXPENSIVE…

There’s a misconception that working to change the world means resigning yourself to a life of poverty. Money was actually one of the major factors that held me back from pursuing development work for the longest time.

To a certain extent, yes, development work doesn’t pay as much as corporate jobs do. After working in well-paying jobs in call centers, tech, digital marketing and media, I had to take a huge pay cut when I took my first NGO job in Manila. Provincial rates were even lower. Sure, fulfillment is good; doing something meaningful is good. But fulfillment and meaning won’t pay the bills or for that next trip abroad. Until they did.

…UNLESS YOU CHANGE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH MONEY.

My experience working with those who aren’t as financially #blessed helped me redefine my views on what poverty and prosperity really meant. It taught me to

Reproductive health and gender issues are one of the most polarizing issues in the country. In a forum we conducted for out-of-school youths, someone asked a question about whether homosexuality was contagious or not. My colleagues and I answered the question in a non-discriminatory way, and told them that no, it’s not contagious, and yes, it’s okay to be gay. Unfortunately, our answer invited a religious rebuttal, Leviticus verses and all, from another educator. On another occasion, we held a youth health fair in a school outside the city. We taught hundreds of high school students about safe sex, consent, healthy relationships and gender identity issues. It was a success; the students and teachers were enthusiastic and receptive. A few weeks later, we saw photos from the event, meme-fied in an anti-RH Facebook page, along with false accusations that our “sex ed caravan” was distributing condoms to minors.

…BUT YOU’LL BE FINE IF YOU KNOW YOU’RE FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT.

A lot of the change we want for this country, on the surface, seems to involve changing people’s behavior. We want to stop crime, stop drugs, stop littering, stop corruption, stop poverty, and stop those douchebags from driving on the wrong lane or parking in the wrong spots. But before we can change how people act, we first have to change not only how people think, but also their perceptions of JULY 2016 | COSMOPOLITAN

Change is sloW…

People are often resistant to new ideas, new ways of thinking, or new ways of doing things, especially if these contradict strongly held beliefs and long-persistent practices. This is especially true for people who have been denied their rights and access to opportunities such as education and jobs. Despite knowing that we did our best to help our clients, there will always be that occasional case where we’d ask ourselves where we went wrong or where we fell short. This is what makes development work particularly challenging. Most of the time, the impact of what we do isn’t immediately measured or felt, not only by our clients, but also by ourselves.

…but remember: #WalangForever.

How do you know if it’s a worthy cause? Bear in mind that the ultimate goal of a nonprofit organization should be to close shop, because real change happens when communities become less and less dependent on external assistance or coercion and more selfsufficient and empowered to make wise decisions about their lives. In other words, you’ll know you’ve done a good job when people stop needing your help. Three years ago, I set out on an adventure to Palawan to teach and empower. I left, learning more about myself and what more I could do to help those in the fringes of society. My frustrations and joys doing development work eventually led me to decide to revisit a childhood dream I abandoned after I left university and life happened: I decided to go to law school, so I can be better equipped to fight for the rights of those who cannot do it for themselves. I set out to change the world, one barangay and one classroom at a time. But in the end, it was the world, every barangay, and every classroom that I taught in, that ultimately changed me. ◼

While listening to criticism and opposition can be helpful, you have to know the difference between the voices that oppress and the voices that are unjustly suppressed. Be that voice for the latter, and you’ll be all right.

I’m working on my EP, but I don’t want to make anything that sounds rushed. It takes time to write songs from experience, and I don’t want to release anything that isn’t me, so I’m taking my time. My music is influenced by R&B, electronic music, and the ‘80s. I’m just putting together all these different sounds. I don’t even care about being unique anymore, I just want to show people who I am and see how they take it.

I think the best thing about being at the beach is just that I feel like a kid when I’m there. I don’t wear any makeup, and my hair’s so curly but I just leave it be and nobody cares. I can be completely myself. My friends say, “You look so happy,” and I’m like, “I am!” And it’s funny because I’m allergic to saltwater. But when I’m there, I’m just so carefree—and I’m not exactly a low-maintenance girl. Sarap eh!

It was a challenge for me to connect with PhilPOP’s market since I’m more into indie. But I knew PhilPOP would reach many more people than my usual listeners, so I decided to try it and see where it would take me. And it was fun—I met new people, such as songwriters who I would love to work with. It was a good experience, all in all.

Gluten, the naturally occurring protein in wheat, barley and rye, currently has a bad rep for supposedly causing, among other serious health issues, bloat and weight gain—backed up by bestselling books like Wheat Belly. US-certified fitness nutritionist and weight loss specialist Nadine Tengco says these claims are not without merit, more so for Filipinos. She says, “Wheat is not indigenous to the Philippines, and Pinoys have not developed the ability to process wheat as efficiently. We are more efficient at eating rice [since it is native to us]. So while we may not be allergic to gluten on a cellular level, we are definitely intolerant to it.” Want to try going gluten-free? Local alternatives now abound in weekend markets and bazaars. We like Cocogreen’s Evolve Gluten-free baked goods that use, instead of gluten, dairy, eggs, and refined sugar, ingredients like teff (the Ethiopian version of quinoa), naturally sweet dates, figs, cacao nibs, and pili butter. HEALTH REPORT

Crush Your Goals! you already have more willpower than you think. but who doesn’t need a little extra?

116

Cosmopolitan | JUly 2016

(TEXT) coUrTnEy rUbin. (PHoTo) GETTy iMAGES.

Your #GoALS Are manifold: eat better, drink less, learn French, run a half marathon, save money. If only you had superhuman willpower, right? You’re not giving yourself enough credit, says Katharina Bernecker, PhD, a university of Zurich postdoctoral student who studies willpower. Most of us show a decent amount of selfcontrol daily: getting out of bed on time, not snapping at petty colleagues, taking care of annoying tasks. Those things might not seem like accomplishments, but “any conscious act in favor of a long-term goal, like earning money, over satisfying immediate needs, like staying in bed, is willpower,” she explains. That said, no one has as much self-control as they want—which is why researchers are working to figure out exactly what willpower is and how to get more of it. What happens in our head that stops us from hitting snooze again or reaching for that doughnut is unclear. Willpower is a concept invented by psychologists; neuroscientists, on the other hand, tend WWW.COSMO.PH

willPowEr iS wHEn yoUr l o n G -T E r M GoAlS w i n o U T.

to study executive function, which includes some of the brain processes involved in willpower, such as impulse control. When you attempt to steer behavior, patterns of electrical activity in the brain duke it out. If doughnuts are on offer, one primal part of you wants to eat them because they’re a rich energy source. Another part doesn’t because you’ve set a goal to lose weight. A third negotiates, I’ll eat them, but I swear, I’m working out later. Neuroscientist David eagleman, director of the Laboratory for Perception and Action at Baylor College of Medicine, likens your brain to a parliament, where multiple political parties struggle for control. “They all love their country,” he says. “They just have different ideas of how things should be done.” Willpower is when the party with your long-term goals in mind wins out. Why can’t the long-term party always win? That’s hotly debated. Some scientists believe we have a limited pool of willpower that is depleted as we resist temptation. others say it’s a mind-set: You don’t think you have enough willpower, therefore you don’t. In Bernecker’s research, students who didn’t consider willpower a finite resource made more progress on goals than those who did. Tell yourself you have plenty of power to do what’s right—then use these tricks to harness it.

test Your BodY Willpower is often compared to a muscle that requires exercise to grow stronger. More research is needed,

but some experts theorize that forcing yourself to do less-than-ideal things is like willpower weight lifting. Taking a cold shower, going for a run in the rain, or using your nondominant hand might help you later resist smoking or overspending.

Keep Your BellY Full It’s not that you don’t have enough mental fortitude to pass on that bear claw; the need for willpower may be driving the craving. Although there isn’t consensus, some scientists believe sugar is willpower’s fuel, pointing to the crazy amount of energy—in the form of glucose—the brain uses for smart decision making. Don’t start a challenging task on an empty stomach. Keep blood sugar stable by eating carbs, including grains, beans, and fruit, throughout the day.

WatCh a rerun Planned to go to the gym but can’t get off the sofa? Stay put, and queue up an episode of your favorite show. “You get to hang out with your ‘friends’ without putting in effort,” says willpower researcher Jaye Derrick, PhD. By giving in to temptation in the short term (vegging out), your willpower resets and you’ll likely be up for tackling a long-term goal (improving fitness) after.

Change up Your time Wasters If you have a busy day, don’t play Candy Crush on your commute. A university of Illinois study found that people who played a video

game for five minutes before the gym exercised for half as long as nonplayers. The brain doesn’t differentiate the usefulness of actions, only that you’ve already acted. Do something easy for your brain, like listening to a meditation app or inspiring playlist, instead.

enjoY more sleep It takes energy to fight with yourself. one 2015 study, published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, found that sleep-deprived people are more likely to give in to impulses, have less focus, and make questionable choices. Hit the sheets for at least seven hours a night.

Find a Friend Tempted to text your ex? Leave your phone on the other side of the room, then curl up with your favorite book, podcast, movie, or TV show. Derrick says the characters can act as “social surrogates” who can help you fight impulses by making you feel better and more energized, the way your IrL friends do.

staY oFF soCial media… …At least until you’ve completed your to-do list. Scrolling through evidence of your fabulous life boosts self-esteem and reduces motivation to do tasks that might increase fabulosity. In one study, subjects either updated their Facebook profile or didn’t, then did a mathematic exercise. The Facebookers gave up sooner. Post your status at the end of the day as a reward for a job well done. ■ JUly 2016 | Cosmopolitan

AT YOUR PLACE

DeCorating tips from a Cosmo girl Abbey Sy This artist and author creates a rustic space of her own that serves as an inspirational breeding ground for her masterpieces.

Use under-utilized space. At the moment, Abbey is living in the family home’s attic. It used to be the catch-all for all the family’s junk, but it’s now been transformed into her own space. “I’ve always been keen on doing DIY home stuff, so moving to the attic gave me a chance to do just that. It was during college that I decided to renovate the space and make it my own. Eventually, when I started freelancing full-time, I decided to transform it once more so now it serves as my office, studio, and bedroom.” No walls? Use the ceiling. Instead of glow-

in-the-dark stars, stick sketches and art that inspire you. “I got the map recently from a store in Japan. The others are from Letters from ABC, a set of postcards that I published, and polaroid prints I got from abroad,” she says.

Whether you’re an artist or an aspiring one, set a table next to a window. Abbey’s tip: “Natural

light helps make your room more conducive to working— it helps you see colors and lines better than artificial or fluorescent lighting.”

Dominated by her desktop, Abbey not only works on the computer in this corner of the room but also uses the space for doing other tasks. “I call it my digital desk. Abbey set her computer table against a window pane. Instead of putting up a chalkboard or magnetic board, she used the window pane as one. Here she lists what’s inside which drawer.

Create an art corner. Abbey’s analog desk houses her art materials and other mementos. “As a traditional artist, I need a space just for drawing and painting. It’s called an analog desk because it’s used for things I do by hand that don’t require technical stuff. It’s also a mini photo studio—that’s where all the flatlays and other photos are taken.”
