or several days last summer, our office desks were surrounded by a fort of boxes containing every beauty product imaginable: jars of gel and cream moisturizers, bottles of foundation, stacks of eye and cheek palettes, and tubes of lipstick in every shade and finish, among others. It took us days to sort everything into their proper categories, and even more time to test and review the samples, hoping to find new favorites we could share with you. What we have to show for it: twelve exciting pages of this year’s Cosmo Beauty Awards, jampacked with beauty finds that will Marla Miniano, Editor in Chief make it a bit easier to face the world every morning with a confident smile and a swagger in your step, knowing your skin is healthy and hydrated, your hair soft and silky, and your lips painted a pretty but powerful shade. Perfect brows These products are on our Holy Grail list, and we right at your fingertips. have no doubt you’ll mostly agree, but ultimately we want you to go out there and find your own HG. Because finding The One that works for you is half the fun—it helps you get to know yourself and build a routine that fits seamlessly into your life, and it teaches you to define beauty according to your own tastes, standards, and preferences. We hope that in the end it also makes you more accepting and supportive of other women’s unique definitions of beauty, even if it’s not exactly the same as yours. (You may be into effortless, no-makeup makeup but that doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate a girl who’s rocking Insta-brows and a holographic highlight you can see from space!) TL;DR: Finding your Holy Grail may not equate to finding yourself. But sometimes, especially on days when you feel like you can do anything because your skin is glowing and your eye makeup game is 10/10 strong, it comes pretty close.

TIll WE HavE FacES

by C.S. Lewis As an ugly princess, Orual has no future— her only joy lies in living vicariously through her beautiful stepsister, Psyche. Her distrust and fear of the gods lead to bitter hatred when Psyche is offered as a sacrifice to Cupid and falls in love with him. This retelling of the myth of Cupid and Psyche is a meditation on selfish devotion as opposed to true love, and the seemingly uncaring nature of the gods.

By Chuck Palahniuk A fashion supermodel loses everything— her career, her fiancé, and her best friend—when a car accident renders her face irreversibly mutilated. Chuck Palahniuk’s satire is a biting commentary on society’s obsession with beauty. This isn’t your ordinary novel—the story starts at chapter 41, jumps back to chapter one, and goes back and forth like a magazine, so look out for hidden chapters.

The fantasy series Encantadia may be over, but Ruru Madrid is still every bit the Prince Charming.

What was your favorite part about playing Ybarro/ Ybrahim? Definitely not the fact that he was torn between two girls (sisters Alena and Amihan)! I like his character growth. After starting out with no clear direction in life, he grew into his role as the long-lost heir to the throne of Sapiro.

did having your love team partner Gabbi Garcia (alena) around make the long hours of filming easier? Of course. We’ve known each other for three to four years now, so we’re familiar with each other’s habits and quirks. I know when she feels down and needs a little pick-me-up. I know when she feels pikon already and when I should stop with the teasing. We know each other inside out.

“I like showing, instead of saying, how I feel.”

What would you say is your love language? Quality time and acts of service. I like showing, instead of saying, how I feel.

do you remember your very first date? It was the girl who asked me out. She was 17, and I was 12. I had the biggest crush on her, and I was so surprised that she liked me back. It all happened so fast; I think what she said was, “Eh ‘di tayo na?” Just like that. For our first date, she wanted to watch a movie, but I was worried about asking permission from my parents. I snuck out, and we ended up just grabbing a bite at the mall.

How about the first time you asked someone out? I was in first year high school, and I remember saving my allowance for a movie date with the girl. For me, it’s not about where you go or what you do—what makes a date great is when you are happy together and want to continue spending time with each other. but honestly, I’m not the “date” type of guy. I prefer going to the girl’s house and meeting her family. With Gab, it was her parents who invited me over. I always bring something when I visit them, like flowers for Gab and puto from Marikina, my hometown, for her mom.

What are your plans now that encantadia has wrapped up? I miss doing indie movies. I did Above the Clouds, a movie with Pepe Diokno and Pepe Smith, about three years ago. I miss having more creative freedom to improvise on set. I also want to go island-hopping in Palawan or somewhere not too crowded. If I had all the time in the world, I would go to Amsterdam. They say everything is legal there! (Laughs) No, I just want to have fun and let go of all my worries.

CONFESSIONS Because you can’t make up a makeup mishap

“I rarely wear winged eyeliner, so once when I managed to apply it perfectly, I forgot it was even there. I was getting stares from officemates all afternoon until one of my editors asked, ‘Is that meant to be a smoky eye? Why is it only on one eye?’ Guess I was channeling half a raccoon that day.” —Chin, 21

“When I played the lead in a school production, I had a director who was especially hard on me. One night, he wanted me to run some scenes even though I was scheduled to be in hair and makeup. With only 30 minutes to spare, I only managed to curl the hair on one side of my head. I had to step onstage looking like a freak. ” —Chrissy, 20

“I was at a La Prairie makeup aisle with my grandmother in the States. I was so excited to swatch that I accidentally dropped (and shattered) one of the foundation bottles. Those things cost a small fortune! So much for walking out of there with something new.” —moniCa, 22

“In my rush to get to a final oral exam, I had to do my usual 20-minute makeup routine in only five minutes. After the exam, I went to the bathroom and was mortified to find that there were huge purple lipstick stains on my teeth. So that’s why my professor was looking at me weird!” —moira, 20

This is Gabbi Garcia at 18: stronger, sharper, with a steady confidence reminiscent of her former warrior princess alter ego.

Girl HERE’S HOW GABBI’S HAIR STAYS STRONG DESPITE THE HUSTLE OF CITY LIFE.

So how does she manage to always look fresh and on-fleek despite her busy schedule? "Aside from taking care of my skin, I also keep my hair beautiful and strong by using Pantene Hair Fall Control Shampoo and 3 Minute Miracle Conditioner every day. They say your hair is your crowning glory—and it's the first thing that people notice about you—so it's only right that you take care of it." She recommends this shampoo and conditioner to girls who are constantly traveling and/or commuting because "you'll never have to worry about pollution causing hair fall (like hair asthma!).” #StrongisBeautiful

Did you know that dirt and pollution make hair weak? Like hair asthma that causes hair fall. Yikes!

The life of an artista may seem nothing short of glamorous—not having to worry about your look, being driven to and from everywhere, and inspiring Filipinos here and abroad seems like a good way to live. But Gabbi Garcia, a rising TV, beauty, and style star, insists that there’s more to life under the spotlight. “I tend to have a busy schedule,” she shares. “On taping days, I spend long hours on set, which for certain projects are outdoors. I also jump from one location to another, which can be very stressful (hello, Manila traffic!).” Given the demands of her job, she’s constantly exposed to the elements—“Did you know that dirt and pollution make hair weak? Like hair asthma that causes hair fall. Yikes!”

Pollution makes hair weak and can cause hair fall, like hair asthma!

Cosmo Girls who commute daily say they’re constantly exposed to pollution, and we hear you! Whichever mode of transport you use, you’re surrounded by a lot more dirt than your body should be subjected to—even if you’re in an enclosed space like the train or a car.

Hair Alert!

Pollution

Hair Fall

This part of your head is skin, too, but we don’t usually give it the protection it needs from harmful elements.

Toxins and carcinogens can slow down hair growth by blocking the production of protein that hair is made of.

THE SOLUTION? Help reduce hair fall by using products that give it the protection it needs. Try Pantene Hair Falll Control Shampoo and 3 Minute Miracle Conditioner! Pantene’s Pro-V formula protects hair from roots to tips, making hair strong against pollution. With this beauty duo, you won’t be afraid to step out and be on-the-go!

When dust and pollution particles settle on your hair strands, they suffocate the hair and make it weak. It’s like hair asthma, which causes hair fall.

Booking a trip to Hawaii on a whim? This used to be a logistical impossibility for Gabbi Garcia at the height of the Encantadia craze, when each day was a mad rush to finish shooting for the episode that would air the same night. As Sang’gre Alena, Gabbi was one of the core characters of the hit fantaserye reboot that grew to have an even stronger following than the original series. After about a year (and generations of storylines), the show wrapped on a high note, and Gabbi seized the opportunity to book a month-long trip to the US and Canada with her family. “I needed that break from work, from stress, from the entire world. I think everybody deserves some time to breathe. That trip was also my way of making up for lost time with my mom, dad, and sister, who I barely saw during the 12 months I spent filming Encantadia,” says Gabbi. “Hawaii was an impulsive move. Not long after we got back from the US, I decided to tag along with my mom, who’s a flight attendant, to Hawaii. It was amazing! Going on those trips and seeing how people live and hustle in different places made me feel recharged and ready to take on bigger adventures.”

You started joining pageants at four and entered showbiz at 15; were there times when you felt insecure? How did you deal with it? Not when I was four to eight years old. I was a really confident, bibo kid! I felt the insecurity from grade six onwards, when puberty hit, which I think is normal for most teenagers. I don’t think I was bullied, but I feel like I was misinterpreted in high school. I was active in academics and co-curriculars

Alena, my character in Encantadia, shows how important it is to fight for your right to make decisions for yourself. because I just really wanted to perform. That was my goal in high school, and it wasn’t for anything else. But some people hated me and said stuff against me for being “too active.” I wasn’t the confrontational

type back then, not unless it was really below the belt. As long as I could handle it, you wouldn’t hear anything from me. To this day, as long as I feel secure in myself and my abilities, I don’t let outside noise get to me. When I started auditioning for commercials and got rejected so many times—out of 50 auditions, I would book just a handful!—it really helped that I had a strong support system in my family. Opening up to your family, friends, and the people you trust is so important.

How did social media affect the way you perceived yourself while growing up? I use social media for inspiration on who I want to become and what I want to achieve on a daily basis. What gets me sometimes, which is a given in this industry, is the negativity. But it’s really about knowing yourself and being secure in who you are, which takes time, patience, and courage. Of course, there are still days when you don’t feel comfortable dealing with negative comments. That’s why I appreciate the Instagram feature that lets you disable the comment section whenever you want.

How particular are you when it comes to your feed aesthetic? I know that some people make secret accounts or private galleries on their phones to see if a new post would look good with their current feed. Personally, I don’t really follow a pattern when it comes to my Instagram. I know what I like, and I just go with whatever I think looks nice.

Encantadia is quite progressive: Women rule, fight for their people, and can be anyone they want to be, though not necessarily be with whom they want. What did you learn from playing such a strong, independent woman like Alena? It still amazes me how the writers came up with a story that empowers AUGUST 2017 • Cosmopolitan

I was about to study music business management before Encantadia; I had taken the entrance exam and submitted all the requirements to the school already. But then Enca came, and I just had to take it. I’m very glad I did because it was such a rare opportunity. Now I’m planning to enroll again in the same school.

What would you look for in new roles or projects? What’s next for you? I’m ready for more. I’m not choosy when it comes to projects that GMA Artist Center trusts me with. I know that management is exploring

26

Cosmopolitan AUGUST 2017

Any dream roles? Honestly, Alena was one of my dream roles already. I really enjoyed the fight scenes, so I’d like to explore more action projects and do another fantaserye.

different paths for me. Right now, I’m keeping myself busy with workshops, guestings, and Sunday Pinasaya, where I get to host and sing. It’s a comedy show, so it’s a nice break from all the crying and dramatic scenes.

How about with your music? I’m actually up to something right now. I plan to do R&B soul soon, with some acoustic songs, too.

Your parents have been very supportive of your career from the beginning, right? Definitely. When I was getting rejection after rejection during auditions, my parents would always remind me that it’s just about the right opportunities. It’s about the right timing, coupled with hard work, of course. My mom is the most beautiful woman in the world for me—all the moms out there, and the sacrifices they make for their families, are beautiful. My dad is so protective and hardworking. He insists on driving me around even if I tell him he should get some rest. He’d always say, “Kung ano ‘yung pagod mo, dapat pagod ko rin.” I love our talks when we go on long drives together. I remember one time he told me, “Every artist’s goal is to soar high. But once you get to the top, it’s very lonely and there are a lot of temptations. Remember what we taught you, your values and foundation as a person.” My dad is also a really good judge of character. He has that fatherly instinct when it comes to mga manliligaw.

Has he given his approval to any of your suitors? As of the moment, no! [laughs]

Lastly, what is one thing you wish more people knew about you? I’d love for people to get to know me as Gabriella Lopez—that’s my real name—and not just as Gabbi Garcia. Sometimes I feel like I have two faces; there’s Gabbi and then there’s Gabriella, who likes thinking about out-of-this-world stuff. As an artista, people can sometimes misinterpret you and the way you think. But really, I just love talking to different people and exchanging views on life and self-discovery.

women and shows that together, we can accomplish anything we set our minds to. I love Alena. From a softhearted, timid girl who gives and gives and gives but never takes, she grew to become one of the strongest diwata in the land and even a Hara (queen). Alena was really distracted by love and other things. Her character shows how important it is to know your worth as a person and to fight for your right to make decisions for yourself. Knowing her worth is what made her strong. Working on the show has definitely helped me grow as an actress and as a person. I learned that acting is not about faking emotions—it’s about the truth. As long as you’re true to yourself and your emotions, you will be able to deliver a good performance. Since we “shot to air” most days, we really had to know our characters inside out: how our characters will react to certain situations and how they will emotionally attack a scenario. In the beginning I had a hard time with it, but halfway through the series, I started to feel like Alena was a part of me, like I had an internal switch for the character.

As long as I feel secure in myself and my abilities, I don’t let outside noise get to me.

empowered, enlighTened, and beTTer Than ever

The sound of silence It’s a sad reality that, even in 2017, many women are still taught that to be “ladies” (whatever that means), we must be unassuming and nondisruptive—that to keep the peace, we have to go with the flow. But we believe that to be truly empowered, we need to find answers to the really difficult questions about every facet of our lives. Growth, after all, isn’t always a painless process.

#REALTALK

rising up from rock Bottom i was 27 years old when i gave up on life for the first time. “I quit,” I mumbled to my boss at the fashion magazine where I worked as a beauty editor. I spoke from my desk chair. I was slumped in it—too tired to stand and walk into my mentor’s office before I resigned after three and a half years. How did I get to that point? Well. I’d been taking prescription stimulants every day since I was 15, and a dozen years later, I was deep inside an addiction. I took speed to get out of bed in the morning, to kill my appetite so I could stay skinny, to get me through writing captions for the perfumes and foundations we featured in the magazine. I took amphetamines to exercise—I loved the euphoric combination of endorphins and Adderall— and I took them to socialize. I took them for everything! But if what goes up must come down, what gets very,

82

very high must get very, very low. I’d hidden how messy my life was when all the women in the cubicles around me seemed so perfect. Concealing the truth eventually became too exhausting. So it was in that very low place that I quit my dream job from my desk chair. Then I went home and went to bed for months. After a suicide attempt, eviction notices taped to my door, and more—so much more— I never wanted to show my face again. But that’s not what happened. About a year later, I wound up taking a job as a beauty director at the (now defunct) website xoJane. com, and soon, I was back on my feet again. For the first time, I had no fucks to give: I’d lost my dream career in magazines, and I didn’t think they’d ever welcome me back. So I flaunted my addiction on the internet. I even said drugs were a hobby. Uh-huh. In retrospect, this was protection. My self-esteem was

Cosmopolitan • AUGUST 2017

so low from what had happened that I wanted to act like a cool rebel at my new job. And it “worked” in ways I never could have expected: I got a big book deal out of the publicity storm that ensued. How to Murder Your Life, my memoir of this madness, dropped nearly four years later, this past January 31. Am I proud to be a drug addict at 34 years old? Dude, of course not. It sucks. But I am proud to be an honest woman. I want very much to get sober and stay that way, especially as I know that it’s what absolutely must be done if I want a husband and children in my future (which I do). The great thing about writing an addiction memoir is that it’s all out there: all the secrets I used to keep and the lies I used to tell. The excuses I used to make for not getting better. Now, I can’t hide behind them or use them to conceal my addiction. The thing about your inner demons is that

they don’t want anyone to know about them—they thrive in the dark. So no matter what you’re hiding— anxiety, an abusive boyfriend, an eating disorder, or something less dire— coming clean siphons off some of the negative power the secret has over you. And by sharing, you open yourself up to the possibility of holding yourself accountable for your actions. It’s scary but necessary. The first reviews that came in for my book were what I deserved. Some tore apart my life and the choices I’ve made, and others praised the writing: my work. I’m thrilled to say that it landed on the New York Times Best Sellers list. I’m listening to everyone—the critics and the fans. I know it’s up to me now to make better choices. And who knows what the new, more hopeful me can achieve? I’m not making any promises—far from it. But stay tuned. WWW.COSMO.PH

Power

C’mon, it’s 2017! Why are taboo topics still, well, taboo? And why are so many of them only “wrong” for women to talk about? If we speak up or out—or, god forbid, express ambition—we’re often called the B word. We’re supposed to act happy all the time. We’re supposed to let bad sex slide. We’re supposed to keep a lid on vocalizing what we do and don’t believe in. Yeah...not on Cosmo’s watch. The truth is, staying silent holds women back by keeping us from learning valuable intel and getting help when we most need it. So we partnered with The Female Quotient, a firm that focuses on issues relating to women and equality, to identify topics we’re all dying to discuss—but find way too hard to voice out loud. More than 1,000 of you got real with us, saying over and over that when it comes to talking taboos, “I’m afraid to be judged” or “Am I the only one who wants to know.…” (Spoiler alert: We’ll never judge you and you are never the only one!) Next, with the help of fearless experts, we got busy answering your pressing questions and addressing your unspoken concerns. Because, yeah, it’s 2017—and we should all be done with letting old-school rules about what’s polite or feminine hold us back. It’s time to talk about…

why DOES a girl haVE TO bE SO TighTlippED abOuT making bank?

money, politics, ambition—our survey found it’s beyond awkward for you to bring up “My family and these issues with I disagree so strongly loved ones. not about politics, and it’s ruining our time anymore! together. How do we have substantive convos that don’t end in door slamming?”

“Talking about money has always stressed me out, so I never ask questions and have no idea what I’m doing. Where do I even start?”

“I’m super driven, but my friends are not. How do I own my ambition without being judged?”

Asking a friend “How much do you make?” seems crass, but our survey says more than 70 percent of you want to talk salaries and more than half want to have a better handle on investing and finance. Sallie Krawcheck, cofounder and CEO of Ellevest, a women-focused investment platform, suggests starting a conversation with intention: “Host a Money Night with friends. Say, ‘There’s going to be wine, and we’re going to get financially naked and talk about how we got the raise, how we’re saving, and how we’re investing.’” If we are going to bust the gender pay gap, which a new study says won’t close until 2044, we need to change it up. “Not talking about money has gotten women where we are, which is that we don’t have as much money as guys do.” Krawcheck adds, “Get. Over. It.”

“Everything is so polarized, I would rather just keep quiet,” confessed one survey respondent. But these days, ignoring what’s happening in politics would be like— yep—ignoring the big red elephant in your living room. Letting disagreement simmer without addressing it can breed resentment, even in your closest relationships. Instead, try to engage by asking questions that stem from a desire to understand rather than trying to force a consensus, says Ana Marie Cox, MTV News’ senior political correspondent and the host of the podcast With Friends Like These. “When you enter the conversation thinking you want to change somebody’s mind, you can be perceived as condescending,” she explains. “Showing genuine curiosity about the way a friend or family member feels is going to lead to a conversation that’s not oppositional. So, for example, if your uncle makes a homophobic joke, you can say, ‘Hey I’m curious, where did you hear that? Does it reflect your own experience?’”

Let’s be clear: Drive is a good thing. And ambition shouldn’t have anything to do with other people. “Own your strengths,” says Shelley Zalis, CEO of The Female Quotient. “Women need to feel confident that their leadership matters. Pulling away from the pack is scary, yet it’s also rewarding because it means you’re going to bring change.” That said, it can be hard to separate your dreams from your BFFs’, and according to our survey, more than 50 percent of women are concerned their aspirations are too big or too small. Let’s lose the idea that there’s a correct amount of determination. No matter how different your goals are from your squad’s, don’t try to fix each other. “Bring empathy and understanding to the conversation,” says Zalis. “Only apologize if you’re not being who you really are.”

Friendships deliver lots of joy, which is why we invest so heavily in them—and also why we freak out when things seem off. But you can’t be a good BFF when you’ve got nothing left to give. If planning too many hangs leaves you overwhelmed, take a pass. “In a friendship, you can only control your own behavior,”

SometimeS, that Special Spark takeS a Vacay.

says Sarah Knight, author of The LifeChanging Magic of Not Giving a F*ck. “And you shouldn’t spend your energy worrying about things you can’t control.” As long as you’re being honest (and not flaking at the last minute), it’s okay to put yourself first sometimes. If things get frosty when you’re up-front about your needs, then your great friend might not be so great after all.

“I was checking my phone during a meeting with my boss and now I can’t remember my assignment. eek! Help!”

Thought you could text GIFs to your squad while taking direction from your boss? Sorry, nobody is as awesome at juggling tasks as they think. “We’re not parallel processors—our brains work on one thing at a time, which means they flip back and forth when we’re trying to multitask,” says Judson Brewer,

MD, PhD, director of research at the University of Massachusetts Medical School Center for Mindfulness. In this case, it’s better to ‘fess up and ask for clarification than let your manager leave thinking she got her message across. Shoot her an email and say, “Just wanted to check in on what my biggest takeaway from our meeting should be.” Then, train your brain to be more mindful—try apps like Headspace, Smiling Mind, and Eat Right Now—and you’ll stop sabotaging yourself and be on top of your biz—at work and beyond!

“Telling my friends I’m having a dark day is hard. But not admitting it leaves me feeling isolated. What do I do?”

There’s so much pressure to be “all good” all the time that legitimate—and common—mental health issues such as anxiety and depression go unacknowledged…even by people who suffer from them. “You start thinking, Maybe I’m not depressed…maybe I’m just lazy and self-indulgent,” says Jacqueline Novak, who spoke about depression in her memoir, How to Weep in Public. But that’s why it’s important to open up to pals you trust. “Part of self-care is deciding who gets that info and who doesn’t,” Novak says. And when you’re in a bad place, she advises using simple, direct language with your loved ones: “I’m dealing with depression right now, and I’m truly sorry, but I’m not up for attending.” While it can feel impossible to open up, the reward will often far outweigh the risk. Reaching out to friends and family for support (in addition to seeking professional help) will encourage others to confide in you and help you find those people who share in your struggle.

“Ugh! I almost never orgasm during intercourse. How can I tell my partner to finally get me there?”

You and so many others: According to the Cleveland Clinic, only 10 percent of women climax easily. Before you throw around blame, remember that you can’t tell someone what makes you peak until you’ve ID’d your pleasure hot spots yourself. Yup, it’s time for some DIY action. Experiment with your hands or a vibrator to figure out what works. Then, do a little demo for your boo next time you’re getting it on. Worried about offending your bedmate? Don’t be. Nonchalantly say, “I’m just gonna get my vibrator”—and once your partner witnesses your epic O, he or she will be glad for the technical assistance, says Cindy Gallop, founder of the site MakeLoveNotPorn.tv.

“I’m going through a sexual dry spell, which is both embarrassing and weird, right?”

Not at all. Women’s sex drives ebb and flow based on a bunch of variables, like stress, body image, and hormones, says relationship therapist Laura Berman, PhD, author of Quantum Love. If it’s bae who’s not in the mood, get to the bottom of what’s snuffing out his libido. Whether you’re coupled or single, never be ashamed to admit it’s been a while. When someone asks you who you’re doing, just say, “I’m just not having sex right now.” If you’re solo and want that to change, don’t be afraid to add, “If you know anyone, hook me up!”

“I’m pretty sure I don’t actually want to be flogged or be part of an all-girl public orgy, but thoughts about those things turn me on. I’m mortified! Please explain this.” Fifty-two percent of you, per our survey, want the scoop on fantasies—and how they connect to real life. “Fantasies are healthy,” says sex and relationship expert Emily Morse. “The more you can find things that turn you on, go with it. No one has to know. There’s a difference between things that you want to happen in real life and scenarios you just enjoy thinking about.” But if you want to make your naughty dreams reality, share sexy thoughts outside the bedroom. Say something like “There’s something I’ve been wanting to try” or “You know what sounds hot to me?” to get the dialogue rolling.

spirit There comes a point when we start to question the things that used to be, ehem, gospel truth. “The first thing is to reflect on the root of disagreement. You also need to be able to express what you do and don’t believe in,” says theologian Steph Puen. “You are entitled to believe in what you want,” adds professor of theology Miko Galvez, who recommends having a serious discussion if there is tension. “Allow all sides to talk, not because you want to convert the other, but so that you can arrive at some mutual understanding and respect. Put yourself in their shoes so that you can appreciate why they believe what they believe, all the while being respectful and keeping emotions in check.” And try to remember: like in any relationship, the differences you have don’t necessarily diminish your love.

TRUsT, The joURney Really is as impoRTanT as The desTinaTion.

“i’m tired of waiting for ‘God’s plan’ to happen. is there really a greater spiritual power looking out for me, and should i just keep waiting?” We always hear one form of it or another, especially in trying times: “God has a plan for you.” “It’ll happen in due time.” “Bahala na si Batman.” And while it may be comforting to hear that someone has your back, relying only on that faith could be keeping you from true happiness. “I’m suspicious of the idea of ‘God’s plan’ that simply unfolds for people, as if we are just passively waiting for things to happen. Pushing it to the extreme would be dangerous— blaming higher powers for our own failures or refusing to accept responsibility for our mistakes,” says Galvez. “Catholic theology stresses that creation is ongoing in the sense that God sustains all creation; thus all of creation depends on God,” adds Puen, clarifying, “However, we shouldn’t passively wait but rather cooperate; we aren’t puppets. Waiting may be part of it, but it should never be a passive—it is an active waiting and working with God to do good.”

“i don’t know what i believe. is there something wrong with me?”

In a word, no. “There’s a common misconception that doubt is the opposite of faith—as if asking questions were a bad thing! Doubt has its place as it allows people to grow and to mature in faith,” says Galvez. If you’re bothered by wondering where you really stand, Puen recommends taking the time to reflect on the things that are important to you. “Figuring out one’s faith and beliefs alone can be difficult; a community, confidante or spiritual director helps. It is also helpful to understand what one’s purpose is, and where you want to direct your life—being able to articulate this helps clarify what you believe in and what principles you espouse in moving towards that purpose or goal.”

“How do I order food when my phone is all the way over there?

Dating apps kickstarted the dating apocalypse; others showed us we could get someone to do our sh!tty jobs for us. Now that there are apps for basically everything, are they ruining our capacity to think?

Have apps Killed Our ability tO adult?

76:

ThaT’s how many apps I have on my phone. Not including the ones pre-installed by Apple. Seventy-six apps I felt I truly couldn’t live without. I’ve got everything from Facebook and Instagram, to Tinder, Pokémon Go, and some app that makes it look like you’re bald (weird, but I felt it necessary to download one day at the pub). There are apps to measure my heartbeat, to order food, to hire a car, to put a border on a pic, and to check the weather more specifically than the Apple app does. Then there are the apps to sell things, to buy things, and to make people do things for me, like fetch my groceries. Basically, my life is in my phone. I ain’t alone. I’m willing to bet my breakfast you can spot your phone out of the corner of your eye. And with 85 percent of us apparently choosing mobile apps over websites, there is supply meeting demand—in the Apple App Store alone there are 2.2 million apps for iOS devices. Suddenly my 76 doesn’t sound so bad. But before you surrender to the phone gods, clinical neuropsychologist Ash Nayate sees two problems with the spread of apps. “The first one comes with social media,” she begins. “We can ask any question and unlike Google, where we have to collate the information and synthesize it in our head, our friends are doing it for us via social media. In order to solve a problem, we’re using less brain power. Secondly, apps are a distraction and we’re shifting towards using the conveniences as a pacifier rather than using our time for more complex problemsolving tasks.” You see, we’re getting less practiced at the skills we were

expected to know 10 years ago without the aid of an app. Think about math—it’s almost okay not to be good at math, and I know I’m rubbish. But it doesn’t matter because I’ve got a calculator on my phone, and Safari as a backup if I can’t even figure out how to find a solution via the calculator. It goes much further than math when it comes to the skills we’re slowly losing the capacity for, too. Think dating. It’s certainly a skill, honed through evolution and maturity. But with the popularity of apps, we’re slowly losing that skill, or it’s evolving into something completely different. Either way, we’re lazy. Think Wingman, the app that launched in April that lets your friends steer your dating life—you literally aren’t actively using that skill anymore. If that is too dystopic for you, apps Crushh, HeroBoyfriend, and Break-Up Boss are the latest (paid) apps on the block that will help take care of your whole love life, from figuring out if your crush likes you based on text messages to planning your dates, and then helping you deal with a breakup, in that order. From heart-eyed emojis to an actual breakup, you don’t have to make any decisions as to how you play the dating game. Coupled up? Ha! You’re still losing skills! We’re having our food delivered without having to cook it ourselves, cars are coming to pick us up without having to call a taxi company and use our words, and threehour delivery is there for a dress if we don’t like the one we wore to work. We’re categorically more impatient, Nayate says, as we’ve somehow lost the art of delayed gratifica-

“To solve a problem, we’re using less brain power.”

tion that we inherited when we began to mature. Still, before you despair and go off the grid, there is a good side: we’re also getting smarter! Sure, we might be losing all our social skills and becoming less practiced in the art of adulting, while also turning into a bunch of impatient brats who wait for no man, but with all that time saved not hailing cabs or doing long division, we’re able to focus more on the kinds of complex brain exercises and information we weren’t able to dedicate time to in the past. “One thing psychology knows is that our intelligence as a society is going up,” says Nayate. “These modern conveniences give us more time to devote to learning. Things as simple as a dictionary— there was a time we had to go and look something up; now we can just go through our phone.” But where do we cross the line between getting smarter and ruining humanity? We’re at least another 10 years away from robots in our homes, so we need to bridge the gap before we’re all meandering around in a pseudo-zombie state, phone clutched in palm. The first step to claiming back our brains? A whole lotta auditing. “Objectively look at what you want out of your relationships and health and fitness and what you achieve—start with that lifestyle audit,” says Nayate. “If there is a gap, that signals a problem. Then do a time audit by measuring what you do every hour on the hour. It’s amazing how much time we can lose. Awareness is 95 percent of the solution, teamed with self-discipline. Once you know where you’re going wrong, you can be more intentional about where you spend your time and, thus, your brainpower.” Hmmm, I wonder if there’s an app for that... Trying To Be Cool In your 30s, meet-cutes take on a whole new meaning.

i’ve never had TrouBle making friends. Despite being an introvert, I’ve always managed to reel in a group of stragglers and fellow wallflowers. Growing up, there was never any shortage of similarly aged kids around to play with. By age 12 I had a group of nine ride-or-die friends, most of whom still have my back to this day. When you’re young, you take for granted how easy it is to make friends, especially in college. Introduce alcohol and a similar taste in music into the equation, and anyone can be your best friend. You build your friendship on a cocktail of proximity and repeated interactions, and you’re all set. As you age, in addition to your metabolism and penchant for staying up past midnight, the rate at which you make new friends takes a huge dip. The dealbreakers mount and the bullshit you’re willing to put up with gets whittled down to a tiny nub. Suddenly, the bar is higher and your ability to sniff out undeserving candidates is all the more pronounced. Drama queens no longer make the cut. Neither do narcissists. That’s why making new friends in your 30s feels a lot like dating—it’s tough and takes a lot of courage, and you better be ready for disappointment, but when everything clicks into place, the butterflies are worth it.

When I moved from Manila to Vietnam over a year ago, I left most of my friends behind. I had to start over, and starting over was disheartening. These days, when I make the sorts of connections that seem like they could potentially grow into something real, I always have to remind myself to stifle my excitement. But how do you do that when making a new friend feels as grand as meeting your soul mate? Six months after I moved, I met someone. Well into a night of drunken buffoonery at a dive bar called Le Soleil, I was standing in line waiting for my vodka soda when I felt a stab of hot ember on my back. I yelped and turned around to mad-

dog the culprit who’d burned me with his cigarette. But instead of some drunken douchebag, I was met with the sheepish smile of a cute, dark-haired girl, who was apologizing profusely. I told her it was okay and went

on my merry way. Later on I saw her in a corner, dancing alone. I decided to chat her up and we hit it off instantly. The next day, we messaged each other on Facebook and made plans to hang out. Now she’s my closest friend here. If only it were that easy all the time. Some weeks ago, I went to a friend’s going-away party. At one point in the night, I broke away from the group to smoke on the rooftop. A charming half-Japanese girl sat beside me and asked if she could bum a stick off me. We started talking and I began to feel that same jolt in my gut I felt that night at Le Soleil. And while we have yet to hang out again, I do feel like there’s potential for a deeper friendship. Until then, I have to remind myself to play it cool. She might smell the desperation.

poStSNap SNackS! Hungry? Brigitte Zeitlin, RD, founder of BZ Nutrition, suggests these treats to get your energy up for round two.

An afternoon quickie followed by a snooze? It’s a health-boosting, Cosmo-approved combo. Leave it to country music star Carrie Underwood to combine the two best damn things that go down in the bedroom— sex and napping—into the latest pleasure-seeking trend: the Snap! (At least, that’s what she coined it in a recent interview with E!) Not only does this back-toback lazy Sunday (or any day) activity sound ideal, but science proves it has some mind-body benefits. When you’re connecting with your partner, your cortisol (or stress hormone) levels decrease and feel-good chemicals, like oxytocin and dopamine, increase—all of which relaxes your mind and sets you up for a snooze, says women’s health specialist Saralyn Mark, MD. The sex/sleep relationship doesn’t stop there. A study conducted by 96

researchers at the University of Michigan found that the longer women snoozed, the higher their sexual desire was the next day. In fact, every onehour increase in sleep duration corresponded to a 14 percent greater likelihood of having sex! “A growing body of literature is supporting the benefits of good sleep for our sex lives,” says David Kalmbach, PhD, the study’s lead researcher. Feeling well rested can improve your mood, which can lead to more highquality sexy time with your guy. “Not only are we more likely to engage in sexual activity when we feel better, but we also tend to enjoy sex more,” explains Kalmbach. The moral of this bedtime story? If you want more D, catch more Zs.

For a classic Snap, lie chest down with your guy on top and slightly to the side of you, draping his leg over your lower half so he can enter from behind, says relationship expert Dawn Michael, PhD. This way, he can rock your world, then rock you both to sleep. Or rest your head on his midsection and take a nap first—naked, since pheromones can escape via sweat, upping the sensuality of getting some shut-eye together. When you’re still in a daze, touch each other all over, then wake him all the way up with oral, suggests Michael. We’re calling it: This one-two punch is going to be your newest obsession. “Hey, babe, wanna take a Snap?”

Scrambled eggS It’s one of the easiest things to make together, and eggs are a great source of choline, a nutrient that supports muscle function and stamina. If you’re feeling fancy, throw some avocado on top.

grapeS or aN apple with ciNNamoN Grapes are hydrating and offer a quickly digestible dose of energy. Sprinkling some cinnamon on an apple also invigorates your senses and wakes you up.

Grand Guesstures

well-meaning Tinder match writes you a poem to ask you out. An officemate who’s had a crush on you for the longest time lays out an assortment of expensive chocolate on your desk, with each piece bearing a note explaining why he’s crazy about you. A longtime suitor drives you to and from home every day without fail. Effort, society emphasizes, is valiant—and in a perfect world, more of it would translate to the increased likelihood of ending up with the person of your dreams. We’re here to tell you that that’s not, and should never be, the case. Time-travel with us to the not-so-distant year 2012, when “flash mob proposals” were dangerously close to hitting a saturation point. Planned-to-the-second, costume-clad propositions were the way to do it back then, and social media rewarded this kind of effort with a torrential rain of likes and supportive comments. Bearing witness to the engagement of two complete strangers brings about a sense of comfort, as if to remind humanity that we’re all capable of loving and being loved. Throw in some carefully chosen background

100

music and strategic visuals, and you’ve got yourself an internet-worthy engagement. So what’s the problem here? Public proposals—or intentionally publicized romantic gestures, for that matter—are inherently problematic because of the immediate pressure they place on a love interest to make a decision that doesn’t stir up awkwardness or cause embarrassment. Higher levels of effort are wrongfully associated with higher levels of sincerity, which is why it puzzles the public when a pricey, meticulously planned “labor of love” is met with rejection. More to the point, if there is no established romantic relationship between person A and person B, the latter’s

unfavorable response gives the public ammunition to vilify her for “spoiling” what would have been a pictureperfect moment. The love interest now has to worry about not only the hopeful lover, but also the hopeful audience. The gesture as a whole is performative, and ultimately reliant on the shallow support of outsiders. In a world full of assholes and cheaters, a nice guy is a cherished find. However, being a “nice guy” and “doing something nice” shouldn’t be viewed as prerequisites to an expected happy ending. The concept of “the friend zone,” for

instance, reeks of entitlement because it’s founded on the belief that persistence and good intentions are supposed to pay off— and that if they don’t, then she was a cold-hearted bitch and he deserved better. The mistake lies in overly focusing on results, instead of showing love simply because. The person in pursuit shouldn’t get to dictate the pace and circumstances in which the love interest gets to respond. Bells and whistles aside, any kind of effort should be for the other person, not for you. And that love is shared only by the two of you. So whether you want to eighty-six the big audience or be engulfed by their cheering, what’s important is making sure your heart’s in the right place.

For many working women, the reality is that, professionally, it’s still a man’s world. Women make up less than 10 percent of the world’s top executives, so take that information as a twofold deal: although we have a long way to go, we need to realize that, yes, we can get to the top spot if we so choose. a public figure, and if you’re too sensitive, you will have a difficult time. Be assertive and be eloquent. Without meaning to stereotype, women have the gift of expression.

How does gender affect one’s professional life? At a Unilever Philippines conference, three female leaders share their answers. Q: What is the difference betWeen Men and WoMen at Work? Leena Nair (LN): All men are different, and all women are different. If I were to generalize, one of the differences is the ability to express ambition—much easier for a man, harder for a woman. When a woman is presenting, she will say “we” and take less credit for herself. When a man comes in to present, he will say “I.” And definitely with money and rewards, the men negotiate far better than the women! Lynette Ortiz (LO): I don’t know if it’s been ingrained in us that we need to be

102

liked, and that to be liked, we have to downplay ambition lest we be perceived as rapacious, too hungry—qualities that are admired in a man. Geraldine Roman (GR): I think women are educated to be unassuming, and that’s supposed to be a positive trait, so we tend to bring it to the corporate world and the world of politics.

Q: hoW do yoU deal With UneQUal expectations in the Workplace? LO: You really need to put in the hours and the hard work to gain expertise. And the fact of the matter is,

t one point in my career, about 50 percent of my income was pure cash I made from babysitting and barista gigs to supplement my job working for a late-night talk show. I used what’s referred to as the envelope method to handle my finances. I put cash in envelopes marked for rent, savings, and my fun fund. The plan was effective but not the smartest. (I’m thankful my apartment was never robbed!) Now, I’m no longer babysitting or slinging lattes. I get paid through direct deposit, which means the cash stash no longer makes sense for me. Budgeting is a deeply personal process—and yeah, sometimes painful. But it’s the first step toward taking control of your present and future. Here are three plans that work—pick one that suits you best.

SenDIng oUT A SPenDIng S.o.S.

OptiOn 1

The Cash Diet

Paying with strictly cash money (no plastic!) most of the time is ideal for anyone who is routinely surprised by the length of their credit-card bill, the echo in their empty bank account, or how often they get dinged with overdraft fees. Of course, there will be some exceptions to the rule, like buying a plane ticket, but beyond that, do your best to follow a no-swipe rule. Even one month of cash dieting can give you a more reliable understanding of your main money leaks. STep 1

STep 2

STep 3

STep 4

Add up your monthly, post-tax income. Subtract your fixed bills (rent, utilities, transportation, cell phone, loans) as well as any amount you put aside as savings.

Use the leftover amount as your spending money for the month. If this is your first cash diet, set aside a P5,000 buffer for surprise expenses like an impromptu doctor’s visit.

Divide your stash by four to give yourself a smaller fixed amount of cash to use each week, and withdraw only that amount—seriously, only that much!— from the bank.

Track how fast you’re spending. When you’re out of cash, no more spending for that week or month! If you have any money left over, roll that into your spending for the next month.

OptiOn 2

If you’re a laid-back yet money-conscious person, this budget lets you manage your spending without checking your balance with every swipe of your credit or debit card. First, divide your expenses into fixed costs, financial goals, and flexible spending. The goal is to have 50 percent cover fixed costs (housing, transportation, and debt), about 20 percent for financial goals (savings and retirement), and about 30 percent for flexible spending (your day-to-day living). Our hypothetical friend Dana gives it a go:

Financial Goals 20% Fixed Costs 30%

Flexible Spending 30%

FIXED COSTS

Dana earns p360,000 a year (p330,000 after taxes), and contributes 5 percent to her personal Equity and Retirement Account. She gets paid p27,500 monthly and pays p15,000 a month for rent and utilities. Her fixed expenses cost her p16,500 each month, approximately 60 percent of her paycheck.

FINANCIAL GOALS

Dana automatically deducts 5 percent of her monthly income toward her retirement pretax. With the p27,500 that hits her checking account each month after taxes and the retirement contribution, Dana tucks away p2,200 a month (or roughly 7.5 percent of her paycheck) into a savings fund, with the goal of saving up six months of living expenses. Keep in mind: Retirement contributions should be out of sight, out of mind. Dana actually puts about 12.5 percent of her money toward financial goals, but only the post-tax income that comes out of her checking account counts as the official budget figure. if Dana saved the ideal 20 percent of her paycheck instead of 7.5 percent, it would leave her with only p5,500 to spend on day-today living expenses a month—a figure that is technically doable but not the most realistic.

FLEXIBLE SPENDING Still better than accounting claSS in college.

104

Cosmopolitan • AUGUST 2017

Dana leaves 32.5 percent (or p8,800) for flexible spending. if she gets the raise and promotion she’s working toward, she plans to keep her fixed expenses and the amount for flexible spending the same, then put the difference toward her financial goals, making her percentages align more with her ideal budget.

The Peso Tracker Instead of giving yourself a rigid spending limit, the Track Every Peso (TEP) system requires you to keep a meticulous record of every transaction you make for at least two weeks. Here’s how it works. 1. RECORD every transaction you make, down to the centavo. Log them in the notes app on your phone, collect receipts, or put everything into a spreadsheet or Word doc. this strategy works only if you’re diligent, so reserve at least 20 minutes at the end of each day to make it happen. 2. tRACK your expenses by date, item, and cost, with the total sum at the bottom that shows how much you’ve spent to date. You can even break it down by categories, such as money spent on food, bills, debt, pets, clothes, and entertainment. 3. CHECK in with your goals. You might be shocked by what you’re spending your money on, like bottled water, for instance. Just carrying around a reusable bottle could add back a decent chunk of change to your budget.

most of us who

lived through the aughts remember (with ire) the term “beef curtains,” which Spencer Pratt accused Lauren Conrad of having on The Hills. Fast-forward to 2017 and Amy Schumer is on Netflix joking about how her lady parts smell like a goat on their best day. Can’t a vagina get some respect? Not if it isn’t perfectly symmetrical and vanilla-scented. From a young age, our most private parts are held to ridiculous standards, and not just by pop culture. “Women get the sense early on that their bodies are too embarrassing to talk about,” says sex researcher Debra Herbenick, PhD, associate professor at Indiana University and author of Read My Lips: A Complete Guide to the Vagina and Vulva. That shame can also be traced back to disparaging comments (one young woman we know still refers to her vulva as Joey, after a girl at a middle school sleepover said her “flappy” labia looked like a Sloppy Joe). Or to pervasive pornography, which only reinforces the Barbie-parts paradigm. The consequences are long lasting: New research shows that women with low genital self-esteem miss out on sexual satisfaction, have a higher risk of infections, and are less likely to get regular gynecological exams. Meaning, yeah, all that negative chatter is putting your well-being at risk.

“You can’t have one relationship with your body outside the bedroom and a completely different one in a sexual context,” says sex therapist Vanessa Marin. In other words, any shame you feel about your vag—its appearance, its smell, its taste—can leave you distracted in bed or unwilling to let your partner get up close and personal with your hoo-ha. So, it’s little surprise Herbenick’s research found that feelings of inadequacy make it harder to orgasm during sex. Also problematic is the porn industry’s version of vaginal nirvana: hairless, baby-soft labia. “Women remove their pubic hair and they suddenly have a much better view of their genitalia,” says ob-gyn Lauren Streicher, MD, medical director of the Center for Sexual Health and Menopause. Not only does an unobstructed view highlight any perceived irregularities, but the skin tears that result from frequent shaving and waxing may also leave genitals vulnerable to STIs. Extreme grooming can quadruple your risk of infection, according to a recent study published in Sexually Transmitted Infections. (To add insult to injury, research by Vanessa Schick, PhD, at the University of Texas Health Science Center at

Percentage of sex-toy users who never clean their playthings. Eek! To keep germs from collecting in the seams and cracks and leading to infection, wash your gadgets with antibacterial soap and warm water after each use, says Adam & Eve sexologist Kat Van Kirk. Then store in a cool, dry place.

Houston, found that some women with negative feelings about their nether regions may be more likely to engage in unprotected sex.) Some young women are so worried about the way they look that they even skip pelvic exams—missing out on potentially life-saving screenings. Others fall so deep into the low self-esteem trap that they develop genital phobia, a legit condition that can lead to depression or avoidance of situations—from sex or a Spinning class—that draw attention to their va-jay-jays.

learning to loVe Your Vag Repeat after us (and suck it, Spencer): It’s time to stop loathing your lady parts. First, advises Marin, get angry. “Do you really want the length

of your labia to be another thing that’s supposed to be perfect?” Nope. Tapping into a collective outrage can help you see through BS standards. Next, take care of yourself. Get regular pelvic exams, and talk to your ob-gyn about any concerns around the scent, taste, or look of your genitals. Oh, and opting for a female doc can’t hurt, says Herbenick. A study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that male MDs and plastic surgeons are more inclined to recommend cosmetic labiaplasty than their female counterparts. On a practical level, try looking at pictures of real women’s genitals. Marin suggests browsing the (NSFW!) Labia Library, a gallery-style site of usersubmitted images of vulvas. “It can be a lot easier to look at pictures of strangers’ than to look at your own,” she says. Scrolling will help you realize that perfection is relative—and overrated. And as you work on your vag pride, remember that in straight anatomical terms, what your clitoris or vulva looks like shouldn’t affect the physical aspects of intimacy. “One of the great things about sex is that how you look has no impact on your capacity for pleasure,” says Marin. So cut yourself some slack and show your lady parts some love—your body will return the favor. WWW.COSMO.PH

How Candy Bites BaCk

Even if you don’t have a sweet tooth, know this: The average young woman eats an astonishing 57 pounds of added sugar each year. That works out to 275 calories of the sweet stuff per day, equal to nearly triple the 6-teaspoon (25 gram) daily limit the American Heart Association recommends. The potential fallout includes low energy, excess belly fat, early aging (wrinkles!), and long-term, serious

Cosmo girls

just wanna have fun

Hands up if you can’t get through the morning without coffee! Us too. So in the spirit of caffeine love (or should that be dependence?), we’ve rounded up everything you need to know about this clever little bean.

111

Bean around the World In the uS:

Traditional cafés in the US tend to serve drip-style filtered coffee, but thanks to coffee outlets like Starbucks, Americans want their coffee elaborate (grande caramel decaf mocha coming right up!).

In France:

The French love a shot of espresso once breakfast is over. But they also love a plunger coffee using a traditional French press, which creates an earthy, rich taste.

In Greece:

Made in a copper pot called a briki, the Greeks like their coffee strong. With a caffeine hit that could knock your socks off, the thickly textured Greek coffee is best slipped slowly.

In VIetnam:

The Vietnamese like their coffee sweet. They whip up an egg yolk with condensed milk and honey before pouring coffee over the top.

Where haVe you Bean? Coffee jargon can be confusing, but one way of figuring out what you’re going to get is finding out where your beans are from.

aFrIca: Fruity, bright

(meaning acidic, but in a good way), juicy—you’ll get a lot of berry and citrus, and even some fresh, grassy, and floral notes from African beans.

South amerIca: Hints of

nuts, chocolate, caramel, and vanilla are prevalent in this region. South American beans tend towards the sweet side, with low to medium acidity and body.

aSIa: Full-bodied with a

heavier mouthfeel, woody, sometimes smoky, and with low acidity. Expect a lot of complex, earthy flavors from Indian, Indonesian, Papua New Guinean, or Vietnamese beans.

In Italy:

The Italians enjoy a milky espresso (think cappuccino or café latte) in the morning, but any coffee ordered after 11 a.m. is usually an espresso or a macchiato.

Cosmopolitan • AUGUST 2017

In turkey:

Similar to the Greeks, the Turks use a copper pot called a cezve to brew roasted, ground beans. Packing a serious kick, Turkish coffee is usually served with sugar.

In auStralIa and neW Zealand:

Café lattes come out on top, with nearly half of the Aussies and Kiwis making it their goto. Flat whites are number two, with one in five saying it’s their fave.

PhIlIPPIneS: While we’re

most familiar with the strong, pleasant bitterness and heavy mouthfeel of barako, smaller farms in the Cordilleras, Bukidnon, and South Cotabato have been gaining popularity amongst specialty coffee connoisseurs. Flavor-wise, tropical fruit flavors are just as common as sweet, spicy notes. WWW.COSMO.PH

Pour your ground beans into the chamber, fill with hot water, and (carefully) press down on the piston to extract the coffee into your cup. Cost per Cup*: p 23.9

Best if: You like sweet, iced, less acidic coffee.

What to expeCt: Depending on your machine, you’ll have to tinker with the type and grind size of your beans. Some machines also have a tendency to over- or under-extract beans. Because brewing is done by allowing hot water to flow down through the beans, you’ll get a lighter cup.

What to expeCt: At least an overnight wait. Possibly one of the easiest methods, all you do is immerse beans in an appropriate amount of water (a 1:5 ratio of beans to water is a good start for a cold brew concentrate) in the fridge for anywhere between 8 to 24 hours. The resulting coffee can be mixed with hot or cold water—or even milk— according to taste.

WANDERLUST

Seeking the PromiSed Land One writer goes on an adventure in Tel Aviv, Israel, a city bursting with good food, rich culture, and interesting people.

114

“What do you do?” asked airline security as I presented my passport at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, where I was transiting to Tel Aviv. “I’m a travel writer,” I said. “Oh, really?” she said. “Do you have a company ID? Or a business card to prove that you are?” Security is tougher on flights to Israel, which comes as no surprise considering the constant state of war in the region. To get to the birthplace of Jesus, Natalie Portman, and Wonder Woman, I had to overshoot from Asia to Europe, then backtrack to the Middle East. One advantage we do have: Filipinos don’t need a visa to go to Israel because of the strong ties between the two countries, which date back to our open door policy to Jews fleeing the holocaust in the ‘30s. Although Israel is less than a hundred years old, its people clearly have a long memory. “Shalom,” the taxi driver greeted me when I finally got out of Ben Gurion Airport. It was eleven o’clock on a chilly March evening.

There were no trains or buses that day, not only because it was late, but also because it was the public holiday celebrating the Purim. “It’s the only fun holiday on the Jewish calendar,” Sapphire, the marketing head at Abraham Hostel, where I was staying, told me the following Monday, looking slightly beat from a weekend of partying. “That’s why the whole country goes all-out this time of year.” If you can still remember your Bible stories, Purim celebrates the triumph of the Jews against a decree ordering their annihilation in ancient Persia. Today, people celebrate by wearing wigs, face paint, and all sorts of embellishments. It was more than enough entertainment for the day as I adjusted to the grungy-trendy neighborhood of Florentin. On my second day, I rented a bicycle to explore the city, then grabbed a bite at a Yemeni eatery called Saluf & Sons. The internet told me to go for the vegetarian malawach, a delicious crispy pancake packed with vegetables and tomato sauce. That day was just a prelude to all the delicious cooking I would enjoy over the next three weeks; the food in Israel is consistently fantastic, from market shouk falafels to seaside fine dining. The crazy thing is, their food is so healthy I actually lost weight during my time there!

“Where are you from?” asked the blonde girl eating alone from across me at the communal table. “The Philippines,” I replied, “and you?” She was from Berlin, one of my favorite cities in the world, and we hit it off immediately. “I’m working at a coworking space around the corner,” she said, explaining how she had founded an artificial intelligence startup with an Italian partner. They came to Tel Aviv when an Israeli company brought them in to test out their technology. This is the kind of people you meet in the city. As one of the world’s emerging startup capitals (did you know Waze was developed in Israel?), Tel Aviv is full of entrepreneurs, tech geniuses, and venture capitalists—a far cry from the kind of people you meet in other beach cities. Over the next three weeks, I continued to discover Tel Aviv: its salsa and reggaeton scene, Banksy’s world-famous graffiti, and so much more. But beyond these incredible experiences, what really made a profound impact on me were its people, who taught me—someone who once regarded herself as fearless— what it’s really like to live without fear. Israelis know how to live every day like it’s their last, an inspiring approach to life that I will take with me wherever in the world I find myself.

think pink

Make this cute color more adult-appropriate with smart pieces and muted shades. 116

Cosmopolitan • AUGUST 2017

You probably think you’re too old to still garb your room in your childhood favorite color—pink. The truth is, this juvenile (and sometimes overly saccharine) hue can still work for you even if you’re way past your teens. Choose muted shades, like old rose or rosewood, which you can use to paint your walls in. You can also create a focal point in your space with an accent wall in a brighter shade like Moroccan pink. For a bolder statement, pick printed wallpaper that sports the same color, like Kamiseta Hotel’s Natalie Room (pictured above). Pink pairs well with gray, so go for bigger

pieces in this neutral hue to balance out the sweetness. You can also mix it with other neutrals like off-white or beige. If you’re afraid to use such an eye-catching color in large doses, limit its use to small accessories and furnishings that you can easily change, like pillows, bed linens, curtains, an area rug, or a lamp. Remember that restraint is key to making pink less kiddie and more mature. Kamiseta Hotel is located at #20 Villamor St., Brgy. Lualhati, Baguio City. my SECRET TO BEING HAPPy

KZ Tandingan It’s been a big year for KZ Tandingan, a 25-year-old singer known for her creative covers, soaring original songs, and experimental style. She launched her second album entitled Soul Supremacy, held a digital concert with One Music PH, and was tapped to sing the theme song of the hit teleserye La Luna Sangre. On August 6, she’ll be hitting the stage with boyfriend TJ Monterde for a concert in Davao. A big believer of continuous growth, KZ shows no signs of slowing down. “When I do TV shows, for instance, my team and I don’t usually get to choose the songs or arrangement, so I make sure that I have a gig once a month where we can do anything we want. That way, I still get to fuel my creative side and challenge myself. I always think: I’m earning money, but am I growing as a person and as a performer? You can always fall back on your usual if your experimenting doesn’t work. But what if it works, right?”

“When you learn to accept that some things are not meant for you, you’ll realize what you do have and appreciate them all the more.” 120

your best shot!

ColorStay Crème Eye Shadow in Crème Brûlée 705, P575

Contrary to what it looks like, taking selfies isn’t easy. Anyone who says otherwise either has extra long limbs (selfie genes), or is Kim Kardashian. There are so many things to consider— Is the lighting soft enough? Are the shadows too strong? Will people be able to tell that this is actually a bathroom stall? Then there’s choosing which selfie to post (out of the 30 you just took), then wondering how you’re going to edit it. The last thing you want to be thinking about is if you’ll look snatched (it’s the new on fleek!) that day. Thankfully, we have a few tricks up our sleeve to make things a little less stressful. Selfies should be fun, after all. We’re going to get you selfie-ready. And we mean, girl-scout ready. It’s a lot about being prepared, so get packing (p.3). It’s also about not forgetting the small details, and making sure you’ll never get caught holding a camera up only to realize your polish has chipped (p.10). Plus, we’re going to help you switch things up every now and then, because no one likes a feed filled to the brim with selfies that all look the same. Show the world you can go from #hypebae to annyeonghaseyo real quick (p.4). Now, go and get snapping. Post it online, or just keep it to yourself. Make it art, or know that you don’t have to. It’s no big deal. Just make sure you’re having fun! But first… let me take a selfie. PhotoReady Insta-Fix Highlighting Stick in Gold Light, P575
