16 I T ’ S HAPPENING! World enders and our depressingly low chances of survival

FROM THE EDITOR

The only way to decongest Metro Manila would be to leave it.

The facts: according to the 2015 census there are 12.8 million people living in the Metro, and 1.78 million in the City of Manila, making it the city with the highest population density in the world. Dhaka, Bangladesh comes in second. How else do you think could it be saved? By building condominiums on every available plot of land? You’d only be encouraging more people to live in shoeboxes. By connecting the North and South Expressways with a Skyway? You’d free up under-the-flyover real estate for more squatting. No, the obvious answer would have to be to pack up and move elsewhere. To be that One Less Person. Of course, it’s not as easy as it sounds. If you have a job to keep, a family to look after, and mortgages to pay, you’re stuck in the city for the long haul. But it appears that some people have been brave enough to quit the city and carve out a new life in the provinces. Note that some of them are young and quite cosmopolitan, used to the comfort and pace of urban life. What happened is that they gentrified the town they happened to be in. They made rural the new urban. This is the essential story we’re carrying in this issue. For it, we went to San Juan, La Union, the surf capital of the North, where hipster hotels and cafes line up a very short stretch of the National Highway you’d think you were in Poblacion, Makati, another burgeoning hipster enclave in the capital. But we didn’t talk with the people who were transforming the place into the cool spot it is now— we drank beer with someone who made it hip before everyone else did: Marcus Adoro, lead guitarist of the Eraserheads, who was there since 2000 to surf and make the town his own (Rural Is The New Urban—and how Marcus Adoro Made it Hip Before All Of You, pp.54) . True to his attitude that’s a mix of hippie and punk, he appropriated the new lifestyle even before we all thought it was possible. The other essentials in this issue: our take on how theater is breaking out of high-brow culture to masa pop, via productions like Rak of Aegis; a longview of the Marawi siege, with insight from noted intellectual on terrorism Professor Rommel Banlaoi; Jinri Park, in a very moody shoot reminiscent of a Wong Kar Wai movie. And we’re not forgetting that this month is for the FHM 100 Sexiest list. Who emerged on top? Let’s just say James Reid would approve.

What FHMers have been up to this month Shoutout to our legendary Production Coordinator Arnel Laigo, who’s been with the FHM for over a decade. This is his last month with our rag and we just wanted to say, “Sorry lagi kaming late !” That and, thank you, sir!

Chise living out every guy’s dream of sleeping next to a half-naked Jinri. Damn this lucky, lazy bastard.

veryone thinks that vlogging for a living consists of coasting easy through life getting paid to take year-long vacations and posting beach pictures of yourself on social media. But as with almost all seemingly glamorous lifestyles, this dream job has its unrecognized downsides as well. Vloggers can be an easy target for criticism due to how much of their lives they put out on social media. Getting trolled, reading hurtful personal comments, and striving to remain relevant despite the overwhelming amount of competition isn’t a lifestyle many people can handle. Good thing Cha Ocampo has no problem getting people’s attention (even when she doesn’t mean to) and has enough patience to stay classy despite the drama that comes with her job. Get to know why she’s the virtual talk of the town.

How did you start travel blogging? I started blogging about fashion but then natuwa ako traveling with friends and writing about the places na napuntahan ko. Super hilig ko kasi maglakwatsa na parang Dora The Explorer. Naging main goal ko malibot ang buong Pilipinas. Nakaka-cure ng soul [ang traveling], ito yung way of relaxing [ko] so it’s like work and fun at the same time. When did you turn it into a career? Sobrang unexpected niya rin at hindi ko inaakala. I didn’t know na pwede ko siyang gawing work as well. Sumama ako with Out of Town blog because they invited me to feature a hotel with them. After that, hotels and airlines started emailing me and tuluy-tuloy na akong nagkaroon ng projects.

What do you think made your blog so popular? Uy, goals. Gawin natin.” Syempre, hahanapin nila kung saan yung lugar. I share things about the place that I feel most people aren’t exposed to yet. For example, Boracay seems like the typically crowded place pero di nila alam na meron palang part na pwede nila i-explore doon. You often mention the term “goals” when talking about your travel posts. Do you think that it’s possible for your audience to reach these goals themselves? Well actually, yung mga pino-post ko achievable talaga siya. Minsan kasi, may nagta-tag sa akin na mga followers [na sinasabi,] “O, nakarating ako rito.” So, nagiging bucket list nila yung mga nagawa ko na. What’s the wildest outdoor activity you’ve ever done? Ang dami kong extreme adventures! Sa Coron [Palawan], 12 FH M

pwede kang mag-jump [and go] cliff diving. Pinakamataas na cliff na tinalon ko mga 30-feet. Medyo overachiever and athletic ako so sige kahit ano pang [extreme sport] yan. I’m always up for a new adventure. Lagi ako nasa labas swimming and hiking. Dati insecure ako [about my body] at pinipilit ko maging stick thin. But now I’m confident, healthy, and proud of my body na medyo curvy. At least I have an ass and a nice pair of boobs, ha ha! Do good looks play a big role in being a successful blogger? For me, hindi requirement na magpakita ka kasi there are travel bloggers I know na puro picture lang ng place pero they get so many views. Ang galing din kasi ng write-up nila. Ako kasi, parang nakilala na ako as Cha Ocampo that’s why I promote [myself] din. You can blog naman kahit sino ka pa. Diskarte lang talaga siya. This tweet of yours became viral: “Lesson for all girls: Don’t date a boy who can’t even take you out to a nice dinner place or even a movie. Date a man who would do that.” What are your thoughts about the controversy surrounding it? I wasn’t expecting it to blow up on social media but I got through it. The gist was that I felt like I was being taken for granted. Sometimes, sa sobrang bait mo, they take advantage. So, I’m trying to set standards for myself. I blogged to explain what happened tapos tumigil na ako. I didn’t fight back sa mga nang-bash sa akin. May isang nagde-defend sa akin tapos sinasabi niya “This ain’t a telenovela na love will keep you alive!” Because let’s be practical, we’re all striving hard to earn for ourselves. May sarili tayong goals. I work hard and earn money para maging successful for my family. I’d like to date someone who shares similar goals. That’s what I was trying to point out with my followers but it went wrong. A shady tweet reply implied that you dumped someone for taking you to Mang Inasal. What can you say about that? What’s your advice for dealing with online bashers? Para hindi maging toxic ang life ko, I’ll just post then read the comments after a few days [have passed]. If may mga issue-issue? It’s better to let it cool down. Sabi nga ng friend ko, you can’t control their actions but you can control your reaction. Kailangan strong ka talaga. When I trended [on Twitter because of those tweets], I was able to get exposure and mas tumaas pa yung engagement with all my sites. Good or bad publicity is still publicity so okay rin siya for me. I look at it in a different perspective so that I won’t feel down, di ba? If you’re motivated, inspired, and have the right people around you, it will help a lot.

We all thought the world was going to end in 2012 and breathed a sigh of relief when it didn’t (did anyone else make a rapture playlist? Just us? Okay, then). But maybe some doomsday prepper might have been disappointed because, damn, he was so ready. Well, he will still get a chance at it if he waits long enough…or maybe not that long. Here, we chalk up some probable end dates with a little bit of scientific research:

NUCLEAR FALLOUT WHY: Recently, North Korea

has been flexing its (yet unconfirmed) nukes. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists has warned that the increasing arms race between the world’s major powers puts the entire planet at risk. WHEN: The Doomsday Clock right now reads two and a half minutes before midnight (“midnight” being the end of the world caused by nuclear war.) The Science and Security board that created the clock are made up of scientists who

16 FH M

JULY 2017

worked on the first nuclear bomb and currently has 15 Nobel laureates in its roster. This board updates the clock every two years. So what’s the worry? Ever since 2010, when the clock was set to six minutes before midnight, it has been steadily counting down and this is the closest humanity has come to midnight since 1953 (two minutes), when America first started working on the hydrogen bomb. WHAT WE CAN DO ABOUT IT: There are ongoing campaigns to disarm or ban nuclear weapons altogether, but electing more level-headed officials seems like a good place to start. SURVIVABILITY RATE: Ninety-nine percent if humanity works together, with a one percent allowance for someone who accidentally pushes the wrong button.

facebook.com/FHM.ph •

twitter.com/fhmphil •

fhmphilofficial

www.fhm.com.ph

SUPERVOLCANOES WHY: Turns out, Mother

Nature is a big fan of things going boom: it’s even possible that humanity only became a thing because she happened to set one of these massive supervolcanoes to “detonate,” widely accepted as the Toba eruption. They differ from usual volcanoes because they erupt with at least 1,000 km3 of material (a “normal” volcano erupts around 1 km3) and are over a million times more powerful than our aforementioned nukes. But look at the bright side, we’ve only discovered 11 of these planet melters to date. The caveat: we’re discovering new ones. WHEN: Geologists can only detect them coming, but can’t do much to stop it, and their tools aren’t that sensitive yet. The last eruption of such a volcano was 74,000 years ago, in Toba in Indonesia. These supervolcanoes are supposed to erupt once every 100,000 years. Sorry future children of the earth in 36,000 years. WHAT WE CAN DO ABOUT IT: Not much. Best option is to colonize another planet before it happens. SURVIVABITY RATE: Ten percent, assuming we agree on who to put on the spaceship, find a suitable planet, and fly out to live there.

THE BIG ONE WHY: Although Phivolcs says

many earthquakes happen in the span of a day, most of them too weak to be felt, we have been feeling a lot of them lately, which is a wee bit too scary for comfort. Reason why people continue to be wary of the Big One—that massive temblor that experts assess will do severe damage to Metro Manila. WHEN: Rough estimates are 50-100 years from now, according to seismologists. But Phivolcs has maintained that “we cannot predict when or where an earthquake can happen.” Fear of the unknown is the most terrifying. WHAT WE CAN DO ABOUT IT: Stage earthquake drills within your own family so all of you know what to do and

www.fhm.com.ph

facebook.com/FHM.ph •

twitter.com/fhmphil •

fhmphilofficial

where to go in case a huge earthquake hits and you get separated. SURVIVABILITY RATE: Down to 10 percent, since you have to post your obligatory, “Lumindol ba?” status before evacuating.

VACUUM METASTABILITY EVENT WHY: Basically, it builds on the

theory that our universe is held together with energy—and that energy isn’t enough for the everexpanding universe, according to a paper published by American theoretical physicist, Sidney Coleman. At any point, this energy can collapse in on itself, rewriting the laws of physics and erasing the universe to start over like some cosmic love story starring John Lloyd Cruz. WHEN: Could be in the next 10 seconds, maybe never (it’s the thing with theoretical physics.). It’s a cosmic event that can destroy the entire universe without warning. WHAT WE CAN DO ABOUT IT: Nada. The resulting collapse will squash Earth within a fraction of a second, and if that doesn’t do it, the entire “laws of physics will change” probably will. SURVIVABILITY RATE: 0.1 percent, if the cosmos is being generous to single-celled organisms.

SWANS WHY: With long necks and

graceful flights off lakes, swans are the epitome of grace, beauty, serenity, and peace—until you remember that they’re also one of the most aggressive birds in the world. Rowing teams will usually cancel a training session if there are swans in the water, because these small, slender white birds will peck six-foot tall muscle men to death. We are not kidding. WHEN: Impossible to tell. Swans are crazy. WHAT WE CAN DO ABOUT IT: Nothing. No one thinks about the swans until it’s too late. SURVIVABILITY RATE: Zero percent. But 100 percent if we continue to act out “Swan Lake” to appease our swan overlords. FH M

Sex Breakfast in bed D O S S IE R

Done just the way she likes it

Yannie, 25

Antipolo

They say that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. But a man who knows how to feed his girl is definitely a keeper. My curvy figure, full chest, and thick ass are enough proof that I’m the type of girl who’s not afraid of pigging out. No wonder Justin and I hit it off instantly. I met Justin in the restaurant he owned. He approached our table, introduced himself, and asked if we liked the food. Justin looked more like a football player than a chef. I used to wonder how he managed to maintain his toned physique despite his wild appetite. Every time I would eat at their restaurant, I would feel his lustful gaze bore into me. In return, I would tease him with my knowing smiles and tight dresses. I made it a habit to flirt with him until finally he asked me out on a date. That was a year ago. Justin and I have been inseparable ever since. Soon enough I learned that Justin’s a sensitive and shy sweetheart while I’m more outgoing and straightforward. He’s a wizard in the kitchen whereas I don’t even know how to cook eggs properly. Despite our differences, our relationship survived over time. I was a pampered girlfriend. Justin constantly spoiled me with food and little gifts. Take this morning, for instance. I woke up to the smell of fried eggs and brewed coffee. I opened my eyes and the first thing I saw was Justin carrying a breakfast tray. “Good morning, baby,” he planted a kiss on my forehead and sat beside me on the bed. He helped me up and fed me a forkful of sunny side up eggs. The yoke was very wet and runny, just how I like it. The warmth and saltiness exploded in my mouth. It was perfect. “Do you like it, babe?” Justin asked, watching me eat. I nodded as his thumb traced my lips wiping some of the yoke left. I took his hand and kissed his palm. I put his thumb inside my mouth and sucked on it. “Baby girl,” he sighed deeply. “How can you cook so perfectly?” I asked while I leaned forward to kiss him. His hot and hungry tongue invaded my mouth. I sucked his bottom lip making him groan in pleasure. But before 20 FH M JULY 2017

the kiss could get any deeper, Justin slowly pulled away and went to the foot of my bed positioning him in front of my legs. I whined and reached for his face. “I thought you wanted me to show you how I cook those perfect eggs,” Justin teased as he pushed me back to the bed. He took off my panties and threw them aside. He spread my legs apart exposing my already glistening pussy. ‘First, you heat the pan,’ he said before licking my knees all the way up to my thighs. I bucked my hips closer to his face but he pushed me down gently. He paused when his tongue reached my shaved pussy. “When it’s hot enough, you take some butter and swirl it around until it melts.” Justin’s tongue circled on my lips hovering but still not making contact with my clit. “Just do me already,” I pleaded. Justin ignored me, “Then you crack the egg wide open.” His fingers spread apart my pussy lips and his tongue grazed the insides of my folds in one swift motion. ‘Then wait until it sizzles,’ he said before his mouth attacked my swollen clit. “Fuck, baby,” I moaned as Justin’s tongue built up speed. He squeezed my thighs as I grabbed a fistful of his hair urging him to go faster. He pinched my clit while his tongue moved downwards to my cunt. ‘You taste great babe, I could eat you all day,’ Justin growled. I let out a scream as the first wave of cum streamed out of me. Justin took ahold of my hips and I fucked his mouth senselessly. I pulled his head harder and screamed for more. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, Justin inserted his middle finger inside me while his tongue flicked back and forth my clit. ‘Holy shit! Ugghhh…fuck!” Seconds before the second wave of orgasm hit me, Justin inserted two more fingers causing me to squirm in pleasure. I pushed back into his fingers forcing them deeper inside of me. “Uggghhh fuck me babe!” I screamed as I squirted. “Fuck yeah! Cum for me baby!” Justin said as his fingers pinched and rubbed my clit. My cum shot straight into Justin’s face, filling his mouth with my juices. I couldn’t even feel my legs. “Best breakfast ever,” Justin said licking his lips. I pushed him to the bed and took off his boxers. I cupped his balls and sucked the tip of his head. He let out a loud moan. “My turn to eat,” I said with a smirk. FH M

Shinji Todö At around the same time, Japanese production company TOEI ran their own Spider-Man series that has an entirely different plot that’s only very loosely based on the source material. In Supaidaman, Takuya Yamashiro is a young motocross racer whose father, a space archaeologist, is killed while investigating the wreckage of a warship called The Marveller, from the planet Spider. Takuya visits the site and meets Garia, Spider's last warrior who implores him to continue the fight against Professor Monster and the alien Iron Cross Army. Garia injects his own blood into Takuya, giving him spider-like powers; and bestows him with bracelets that can shoot webs and—wait for it—summon a giant robot named Leopardon, which he pilots. But hey, at least the costume is the same!

In 1977, fifteen years after Spider-Man made his first-ever appearance in comics, CBS released a made-for-television Spider-Man film starring Nicholas Hammond (who was also one of the Von Trapp kids in The Sound of Music). This was the pilot episode of a Spider-Man TV series that would go on to have more of its episodes edited into featurelength films.

PARENG NED!

When the first promotional materials for Homecoming released in 2016, Filipinos were quick to spot one of our own: Jacob Batalon, a Filipino-American actor who joins Peter Parker’s band of multicultural misfits as Ned, his best friend. Many speculated that the character would be Ned Leeds, a Daily Bugle reporter who eventually became a stand-in for the Hobgoblin in the comics. And while Marvel did create Batalon’s character with Leeds as basis, they eventually decided to make him just Ned, without a last name in the script. Whether or not that means we can expect a rotund Filipino Hobgoblin in any of the future installments is yet to be determined.

were both in their late 20s when they played the role—and comes with an ageappropriate storyline. Homecoming is set just a few months after the events of Civil War, where Peter meets Tony Stark and fights alongside the Avengers as Spider-Man for the first time. Now, under Stark’s wing, he faces the greater responsibilities that come with his greater powers: fighting crime as Spider-Man and living as an ordinary high school student. All the while, classic franchise villain the Vulture (who, in an ironic but brilliant casting decision, is played by Birdman’s Michael Keaton) looms overhead. At the helm of this new Spidey film is director Jon Watts, who has said that his depiction of a younger Peter Parker is heavily inspired by the work of John Hughes (The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles). So, it’s reasonable to expect a lot of coming-of-age themes to surface in Homecoming, which is Watts’s biggest project to date. His most salient previous work is Cop Car, a critically acclaimed 2015 film about two young boys who unwittingly steal a police cruiser with a prisoner in the trunk. Cop Car works best in building tension and depicting youthful disregard in the face of imminent danger, so we can also expect him to handle these emotions deftly in Homecoming.

It’s the most exciting moment in cinema for Spider-Man fans since the word “QUEENS” popped up midway through last year’s Captain America: Civil War. The web-slinger is back on the big screen in Spider-Man: Homecoming, the first installment of this generation’s second franchise reboot, and the sixth live-action Spider-Man film in the past 15 years. But most important, Homecoming is the first Spider-Man film set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe—something that almost didn’t happen, because Sony Pictures Entertainment owned exclusive character rights to Spider-Man in film, while the MCU belonged to Disney-owned Marvel Studios. Thankfully, all was made right in the world when Sony and Marvel Studios reached a deal, under which the character has been allowed to appear in Disney’s Marvel films (including Civil War and the upcoming Avengers installments) while Sony’s next Spider-Man films have been allowed to be set in the MCU. It’s a rare confluence of corporate interests that brought Homecoming and its planned sequel to life, making it a testament to Spider-Man’s significance in the grander scheme of superhero cinema. The 21-year-old Tom Holland is our wall-crawler this time around—a much younger Peter Parker than both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, who

few years ago, FHM introduced a sexy Korean model to the mainstream Filipino audience, which jumpstarted her career in the entertainment industry. The Korean aesthetic was all the rage back then with the popularity of K-pop and K-dramas, people were crazy about Koreans and their culture, which made young Jinri Park’s rise to fame a natural outcome of the times. These days, we’re still quite obsessed with Korean pop culture, but maybe not so much intrigued by its people, having had a sort of “invasion” in our shores in recent years. Yes, we can plainly see now that Koreans are everywhere, in droves. Still, we have not lost sight of the fact that Koreans, when they are at their sexiest and cutest, are top hits, and that is why we are still obsessed with Jinri. Jinri has been on FHM’s 100 Sexiest list since her 2011 debut on our pages, something she herself might be surprised of because she claims not really knowing what she was getting into the first time. “I was a model back then, not an artist, so I really didn’t think of my image, so I had nothing to lose.” At first, she wasn’t quite comfortable with the “sexy” tag. “I always thought before that it had a negative effect on my career because I would always be labeled as ‘sexy,’ which meant I could only do certain things that fall under that category. I don’t mind being considered sexy, but I don’t want to be boxed in with that label.” In her early years in the entertainment industry, Jinri tried out becoming a DJ on RX 93.1 Monster Radio, hosting events like Kpop Republic, and acting in sitcoms like Vampire Ang Daddy Ko and web series like Tanods. But photographers, corporations, and shows kept giving her projects where she could showcase her innate sensuality. “I would never get those kinds of jobs that involved runway walking or high fashion stuff. I would get more of the sexier shoots because I have a womanlier figure. I have to portray the look that the people or the client wants, so maybe that’s why people think I’m sexy.” It wasn’t until entering the Pinoy Big Brother House that people started to get to know Jinri for what she’s really like as a person. “I think I finally broke out of [my sexy] image last year when I did PBB. I think that was the moment that people were like, ‘okay, she’s not just the sexy model; there’s something else about her.’” 30 FH M JULY 2017

’m actually quite the introvert, so I had a hard time being always around people because I need my space. In the beginning, I wasn’t getting along with people and it looked like I was really sad and depressed, which was probably why I got nominated all the time, ha ha!” This reclusive personality was fairly different from what Jinri’s long time fans expected from their bubbly Korean idol. But she felt there was no need to hide her real self, even if meant she was misunderstood by both the PBB housemates and viewers in the beginning. “People actually thought that I was a party-going extrovert always out with guys, so they found me weird and anti-social. But as they got to know me they understood where I was coming from. Going in [the PBB house], I told my manager that I didn’t care if I was going to be the first one out. Like, I’m just going in there to get a worthwhile experience.” Contrary to what she expected, Jinri’s stay in the house lasted for quite some time. She got evicted right before show’s Lucky 7 were decided upon, which gave her more than enough time to reflect about the numerous things happening in her life. She got evicted right before show’s Lucky 7 were decided upon, which gave her more than enough time to reflect about the numerous things happening in her life. She likened the experience of interacting with Kuya to a daily therapy session. Through Kuya’s constant prodding, Jinri finally came to know how to act around her housemates and how to address the emotions that were bottled up inside her for years. “In that small house, you’re forced to get to know more about yourself because you’re forced to interact with different people. In any other situation in every day life, I’d just walk away from these situations, but in PBB I couldn’t just walk away from it. I had to face it. As cliché as it sounds, I did learn a lot about life and how to be understanding of other people while I was inside that house.” So Jinri finally got what she wanted: to get out of the box as just another hot Korean idol, which now begs the question, why would she return to her sexy roots by gracing us with another cover? “I came from a very sexy image and sort of [transitioned into] a more wholesome one through the exposure I got from PBB. Even though some of the viewers of PBB who see me on FHM’s cover again might question “why are you going sexy again?” I’d say it isn’t about being labeled as sexy—it’s to show that I’ve become more comfortable with who I am and my body. This is my body and I’m confident in my own skin. Being sexy is a part of who I am as an artist and I’ve embraced it.”

rue enough, after PBB it was as though a floodgate of opportunities opened for Jinri. There was Encantadia. “It was very different because while a lot of the teleseryes shoot at most, thrice a week, a show like Encantadia needed extreme dedication. We would tape the whole day and then the producers would say, ‘Okay, you can go home at like seven or eight in the morning, and we have to come back on set at, like, 11 a.m., so some people would just choose to stay on set. It seemed like we lived on set at times.’ But Jinri revels in being challenged. After finally getting down to properly balancing her daily grind of tapings with other commitments, she thought that it was good idea to explore another discipline—Jiu-jitsu. “[Jiu-jitsu] has changed the way I view my life because it teaches you to be very humble. The martial art recognizes that there’s always going to be someone better than you and who will beat you even if you’re very experienced. I get this unexplainable fulfillment out of it.” Jinri’s proven that when she steps on the gas, she floors it. Apart from her show business gigs and physical activities, she’s dabbled in a business that she’s always wanted to get into: dog care. Jinri’s the CEO of an App called Wagtales, a one-stop app for everything a dog owner needs. It can locate the nearest vets, shops, groomers, and trainers. Wagtales is also in partner with CARA and PAWS and they’ve uploaded their dogs that are up for adoption.

“When you ask a person why he or she got a dog, they’ll usually reply something along the lines of: ‘my dog makes me happy, I get a dog because I’m lonely or I’m single, I need a companion, or because they’re just cute,’ but have we ever thought about a dog’s life? Was his or her life fulfilling? Was he or she happy? That’s why I built the app. I want to make dogs’ lives happier.” We don’t know about you guys but we think Jinri’s made quite the argument that she isn’t just some sexy Korean you can discount. “I’m not a one-sided person. I’m not just a sexy model. I am a sexy model, who’s a CEO, who kicks ass at Jiu-jitsu, who acts, and is interested in so many things. I’m introverted yet I’m confident… I think. No, wait! Let’s make it clear, I am a confident woman! Ha ha! “I just live day by day trying new things. I don’t exactly know where these choices might take me and honestly, I don’t want to know. And while I do have goals like becoming a black belt in Jiu-jitsu, I feel like I’m discovering so many new things about myself and trying all these things right now feels so exciting for me.” Finally, Jinri gets a chance to take everything in. ownplay the threat, and you underestimate the capability of enemy forces. You are not prepared to confront a situation that may have started small, but is now big.” So observes Professor Rommel Banlaoi, chairman of the Philippine Institute for Peace, Violence and Terrorism Research and director of the Center for Intelligence and National Security Studies. He is referring to an incident in 2015, when a black flag now commonly linked to ISIS was waved on the grounds of the Marawi State University in a demonstration of support for the international terrorist group. The Maute Family of Lanao del Sur was pointed as the instigator, and Banlaoi says that the family also used the rally to recruit for what would become the Maute group, who with members of the Abu Sayyaf Group and other Islamist groups in Mindanao, and as recent reports have noted, some foreign nationals who our military believes are jihadists, is responsible for the Marawi siege. “Some of those recruited were responsible for the Davao City bombing in September 2016,” Banlaoi says. Banlaoi uses the word “downplay” because, until President Rodrigo Duterte himself declared on May 30, a week after fighting began in Marawi, that ISIS had been supporting the Maute Group, it had been the government’s stand that the MG was merely a bandit group trying to get the attention of ISIS in hopes of getting support, not least of it in terms of money. But Banlaoi, who has spent the last 17 years studying the phenomenon of terror and violence in Mindanao, saw it as a warning when the nascent MG began to make headlines back in 2015. “The Maute group made it to the national consciousness when they openly declared allegiance to the Islamic State in 2015. After which they began to kidnap Christian workers and behead then a la ISIS, which prompted the military to raid their camps in Butig Lanao del Sur in November 2016. The whole Maute family supports the whole group that pledged allegiance to ISIS,” says Banlaoi.

ThE FAMIly

The Maute family is not only a radicalized Islamist family, they are also a wealthy family.

52 FH M JULY 2017

“The Maute’s wealth comes from landholdings and other real estate property. But they are also suspected to be involved in illegal activities, including extortion, illegal drug trade, and illegal arms trade,” says Banlaoi. Banlaoi explains their ties to extremism: “The Maute family is related with a well-known commander of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front who became its vice chairman of military affairs, the late Alim Abdul Aziz Mimbantas. Omarkhayam Romato and Abdullah Maute, brothers and leaders of the Maute group, are first cousins of Azisa Romato, wife of Aziz Mimbantas. “Aziz Mimbantas coddled one Indonesian Jemaah Islamiyah militant, Ustadz Sanusi alias Ishak. They coddled him in a town in Lanao del Sur called Butig. In 2012, Philippine Law Enforcement authorities raided the town of Butig, looking for Sanusi. During the raid they discovered improvised explosive devices and materials associated with ISIS and at the same time a black flag associated with ISIS. At the time the authorities had no idea of the meaning of the black flag. “Sanusi radicalized the Maute family. Sanusi was killed by law enforcement authorities in 2012, in Marawi City. At the time, the brothers Omar and Abdullah went to school in the Middle East where they imbibed the ideology of ISIS. So when they went back to Lanao del Sur, they propagated the ISIS ideology,” says Banlaoi.

hOw dO wE MAKE SENSE OF All ThIS?

Banlaoi asserts that Marawi has always been special in the strategic radar of many violent extremists. “Marawi City is meaningful for Islamist extremists because it is the only Islamic City in the Philippines. No other city in the Philippines, dominated by Muslims, has acquired that status. In fact as early as the ‘90s when al-Qaeda was still the dominant terrorist group in the world, Osama bin Laden selected Marawi City as a place to establish an Islamic center to train future jihadists in the Philippines. “This center was indeed established in Marawi by Mohammed Jamal Khalifa, the brother in law of Osama bin Laden. The center was called Darul Imam Shafi’I, where many of the commanders of the Abu Sayyaf group, as well as the Bangsamoro

Islamic Freedom Fighters, trained,” says Banlaoi Banlaoi sees the threat of ISIS will not immediately disappear. “Remnants of fighters in Marawi City I think will disperse, and through this dispersal they will operate in various places in Mindanao (according to government intelligence accompanying an article the professor wrote for news site Rappler, there are 14 groups in Mindanao who have pledged allegiance to ISIS). And unlike the current situation, they will mount intermittent violent actions through bombing operations, not conventional battle with government forces. To me this is more challenging and difficult to confront than the ongoing Marawi incident.” Banlaoi also says that based on his research there is reason to fear that ISIS may have already recruited Filipinos outside of Mindanao. “They have sleeper cells. Mostly from social media recruitment. If it’s in Luzon or Visayas, they target Muslim converts, age range 13-25. First through Facebook and eventually through face-to-face interactions. Like the case I studied of the Davao bombers in 2016, one of the suspects was recruited through Facebook, then a series of exchanging links eventually hooked him to violent extremism associated with ISIS. The FB friend decided to meet him in person, and through constant meeting, encouraged and convinced the person to undergo training to become a jihadist in Butig, Lanao del Sur. Then he was deployed to bomb Davao.”

whAT dOES ThE FuTuRE hOld FOR MINdANAO?

“The problem of terrorism in the Philippines, particularly with ISIS, is not only a military problem. Martial Law is just addressing the military aspect of the problem. But we need a more comprehensive solution because the problem of terrorism in the Philippines is deeply rooted in a lot of issues: political, social, economic, religious, cultural issues that cannot be addressed by Martial Law. It can only be addressed by good governance,” says Banlaoi. But good governance is such a big word. “Precisely. But we have to start by improving leadership at the local level. Improve local government and people will not be enticed by the ideology of ISIS. But if there is absence of government at the local level, there will be a sense of anarchy and terrorist groups like ISIS will

take advantage of the situation. That’s why they consider the Philippines as ripe for the propagation of ISIS ideology because there is a political situation conducive to its spread. And that is poor local governance, warlordism, and local grievances. “The people on the streets of Marawi know the ideology—and they reject it. They even reported to local authorities about the threat of ISIS in the Philippines prior to this incident, but our authorities downplayed the threat and even dismissed that ISIS has penetrated the country,” says Banlaoi.

And will Mindanao ever fulfill its promise? “It will continue to be a long journey to fulfill that promise because the problem is so complex that the solution requires a long struggle. You need to rectify centuries of historical injustice commited against Muslims in Mindanao. You have to rectify the centuries-old problem of relative deprivation, and the problem of exclusion generated by marginalization,” says Banlaoi. But what if—and this is something that has not been talked about for so

long—an independent Mindanao is actually the solution? “That’s for the future generation to determine. But right now the current generation cannot imagine a Philippine Republic dismembered into pieces. But who knows? Because that was also the problem of the Malayan Federation— the generation of the federation did not imagine Brunei and Singapore seceding, but the generation after them made the supreme decision to determine their own course. Brunei and Singapore proclaimed independence. Even Indonesia did not imagine East Timor becoming separated. “We have to appreciate the fact that the problem of terrorism in the Philippines is not only local, but it also has international dimensions. Although many of the issues are local in origin, like grievances, external influences provide justification for more acts of violence. External influences also provide ideological reasoning for the persistence of violent activities by resistant groups. We have to understand that we are not dealing with a purely local problem, but it is integrated into the worldwide problem of violent extremism.”FH M

course. And because the Eraserheads broke up under a shroud of mystery, everyone was clamoring to know why they did it. Adoro found out just how far some people would go to find out: “Minsan, nagsu-surf ako, nasa malalim na ko. Tapos may sumunod sa ‘king isa pang surfer. Paglapit, tinanong ako, ‘Marcus, bakit ba talaga kayo naghiwalay?’” Unperturbed by all the attention and unwarranted questions, Adoro went ahead and planted roots. After the ‘Heads’ first reunion concert in 2008, Adoro used part of his talent fee from that gig to finally invest in a plot of land in San Juan.

arcus Adoro has little use for fancy clothes. Shirtless, in shorts and flipflops, with a ratty straw hat askew on his head, he scarfs down his lunch of chicken afritada and rice at Nak-Nak, a roadside carinderia in San Juan, La Union. No one minds him because everyone else is as casually dressed as he is. “First two years ko rito, ang damit na dala ko lang, dalawang T-shirt, isang polo, dalawang shorts,” Adoro says. This was 17 years ago, two years before the Eraserheads (where Adoro was the lead guitarist) broke up. Back then, only locals and hardcore surfers knew about San Juan’s tall waves. Today, however, a steady stream of weary city dwellers—more coffee chuggers than surfers—keeps San Juan’s roadside cafes and restaurants full. It seems this part of La Union (or Elyu, as La Union has come to be known) has become the place to be at for people fed up with noisy, complicated Manila. Do they know something we don’t?

“Nung 1997 pa lang, may nagsabi na sa’kin na may surfing community sa La Union,” says Adoro. But the

Eraserheads were at their peak then; Adoro had no time to surf. “Three years later—patapos na yung ‘Heads nun— sabi ko, ‘Surfing muna ko, ha?’ Ilang buwan na pabalik-balik ako rito [sa San Juan]. Every week, nandito ako.” Through the tumultuous last months of the Eraserheads, Adoro found more and more time to spend atop the tall waves of San Juan. And when the group finally broke up, word around Manila was that he had left the music scene and gone to La Union to become a surfer. That was more or less true. “Nagsawa ako sa kakakanta,” he says. “Binenta ko oto ko, pumunta ko rito. Tapos yun: I lived the surfer life.” He eventually moved into a onegarage apartment in San Juan, paying a monthly rent of P4,000. Years later, San Juan’s cluster of surfing school resorts would pop up on the other side of the highway, across Adoro’s apartment. But when he first moved in, there were just a few resorts up, including Sebay Surf Central, where Adoro spent his weekends before finding his apartment. For two years, Adoro used that apartment as his homebase. He didn’t need much space. All he had were his few clothes, a laptop, and his wide collection of DVDs. “Lahat ng gamit ko, naka-box lang,” Adoro says. His move didn’t come unnoticed, of

He’s done with lunch now and is back home, relaxing with a beer. Home is a traditional Pinoy open-air hut, an airconditioned metal cube that’s the size of a hut, and, at the front of the property, a half-finished four-storey structure—a four-story modern hut is the laid out plan—that has an indefinite finish date. A green VW Combi is parked beside one of the huts. When asked when he and his family can move in, Adoro throws the question at one of the workers welding some beams together: “Kailan daw matatapos to?” The worker grunts in reply. Staying true to the laid back manner of locals in any Filipino province, Adoro takes a swig of beer, shrugs, and moves on. “Yung pagtayo ko ng kubo, that was my appropriation of the surf culture a long time ago,” says Adoro. “Di ba dati may isang kubo lang sa beach, tapos dun lang nagco-converge lahat ng surfers? Ngayon magulo pa rito kasi di pa tapos yung tinatayong bahay namin, na magiging puro glass at wood. Pero may method to the madness yan. May order itong chaos na ito sa utak ko.” When he and his girlfriend, Mika, moved to the property, though, the huts were yet to be built. “We lived in a tent for the first few weeks,” says Mika, who’s also the mother of Adoro’s youngest daughter. “Madalas, may mga palaka at tuko kaming kasama sa labas. Kaya alam na ng mga kapitbahay pag may marinig silang sigaw—may palaka na naman.” Once they were more settled, Mika taught Adoro how to bake. Sensing a potential source of income, Adoro installed a big oven in one of the huts and started baking. He eventually became known for it and would receive orders to supply the resorts around with their daily bread. Unfortunately, he’s had to stop because of conflicting work schedules.

www.fhm.com.ph

But when he was still baking, even Adoro’s chickens appreciated his talent. He had four of them, and apparently, all four developed an appetite for butter and milk, leftovers from Adoro’s ingredients. The guys building Adoro’s house would feed these to the chickens when Adoro wasn’t around. The native chickens eventually grew to the size of turkeys, each weighing eight kilos. They’re gone now; what remains is a fifth chicken, Magi, who loyally stays in Adoro’s property. “May stretch na wala kami rito ng ilang buwan,” says Mika. “Pagbalik namin, nandito pa rin si Magi; at marami na siyang itlog.”

As more and more people discovered Elyu, the rural vibe of San Juan began to shift. On both sides of the highway, B&Bs, resorts, restaurants, and coffee shops slowly cropped up. Today, it’s not uncommon to see groups of young people clad in beachwear walking single file by the highway on their way to get a flat white at a café a few meters from their resort. Obviously used to buying meals at urban prices, these “weekend warriors” inadvertently support the local industry by never batting an eye at paying Manila prices for meals that were locally produced. But the locals, including Adoro, know better. “Paglipat namin dito, ang gastos namin per week, P500 lang. Kasama na dun yung gatas ng baby,” he says. “Maganda yung palengke sa San Fernando. Mura ang fresh seafood. Bagsakan din dito ng gulay mula Baguio. Ang okay rito, ang baba ng cost of living. Kung marunong kang humawak ng pera, tatagal ka rito.” While he relies on the provincial capital, San Fernando, for most of their food, Adoro also takes advantage of his yard to plant fruit trees. “Pag season ng kalamansi, lagi akong may calamansi juice na bitbit sa beach. Isang litrong calamansi juice,” he says. Living in a rural setting was never a problem for Adoro. He had an itinerant childhood. But because of his father’s job at the Philippine Port Authority, Adoro and his family always lived

within spitting distance of either the sea or the mountains. He also spent many summers in Bacnotan, La Union—the next town north of San Juan—in his mother’s family’s tobacco farm. Perhaps it’s his affinity to the rural lifestyle that gave Adoro quick friends among San Juan’s budding entrepreneurs. “Ano sa’yo, Makoy?” the bartender at popular coffee shop El Union asks Adoro for his order. “Kiss lang,” replies Adoro, disappearing into the back as if he owns the place. Like the other establishments along the highway, El Union has no vacant tables (it’s a Monday). Millennialage coffee drinkers nurse their cups of latte to the music of Bob Dylan. Upstairs, under a slanting anahaw roof, is a co-working space with highspeed Internet. “Ayos na,” Adoro says, emerging with a vinyl record of the Rolling Stones under his arm. There was a stash of old wax at the back of the coffee shop. Apparently the owner had dug them out of its grave. “Pinapili nila ko ng isa, tapos binigay na sa kin,” he says.

“Too loud!” Adoro’s youngest daughter complains from inside their hut, and turns down the volume on Mick Jagger. “Turn it up!” Adoro halfheartedly whines, but the volume stays down. It was this same daughter who experienced life in San Juan without the creature comforts that city people take for granted. “School vacation niya, so dito kaming dalawa. Wala pa yung mga kubo, kaya naka-tent pa kami,” says Adoro. “Tinuruan ko siyang gumawa ng apoy—pero may posporo na gamit! Three times a day, nagluluto kami; inabutan pa kami ng tag-ulan. Hirap na hirap siya. Nung tapos na yung bakasyon niya, naglabas ako ng lighter fluid at nagsindi ng apoy. ‘You mean you can just do that?’ Galit na galit.” It’s obvious that music is thick in the veins of the Adoro children. The oldest plays for the band Ourselves the

Elves; Adoro’s older daughter does gigs of her own, as well. “Pa-obscuran itong mga to ng [music] sources,” Adoro says of his kids. The youngest two are with him for the summer. “Pero lahat naman, bumabalik sa classics. Recently, itong bunso nakikinig na ng Nirvana. Nung baby siya, Stones baby siya, kasi yun yung pinapatugtog namin,” says Mika. “Now that she makes her own choices, Nikki Minaj na.” The father hasn’t stopped creating, either. After his stint with the Eraserheads, Adoro put together rock band Markus Highway, and still regularly goes to Manila for gigs and to jam with other bands. Five years ago, he completed a project called “Greems,” which he published into a book. In it, he has 100 musical pieces played in the same key, with the same chord progression. He plays blues with another Pinoy rock stalwart Nino Mendoza of Blue Jean Junkies, as Dirty Makk and the Kidd. Another project is in the works: Blues Kamotes, a blues/ punk band. Adoro has already recorded two of the three albums he wants to do.

“ WA lAn G hips t er hips t erA n ”

“Yang beach na yan, malinis yan hindi dahil may nag-post ng picture ng basura na may hashtag ‘blahblahblah,’” says Adoro, watching a group of young laughing tourists play a convoluted game of beach football/ volleyball on the sand. “Malinis yan dahil kada Friday, nililinis namin yan. Lahat, locals; lahat, volunteers.” He finishes off his beer and opens another bottle. Although he says he’s grown a liking for double black scotch, beer is still his default drink with friends. “Mas chill si Makoy rito,” says Mika. “Bagay sa kanya to.” It does suit Adoro, who dresses the part of a surfer dude with sunglasses fashioned from a pair of construction safety glasses. He spots a vendor selling balut and asks to borrow the basket—an impromptu idea for another photo. “Balut kayo diyan,” he calls, holding the basket at the crook of his arm. If not for the fact that he’s posing for the camera as he does this, Adoro looks as if he does spend all his time selling duck eggs. “Ang hindi ko maintindihan, yung pagiging hipster,” Adoro says, as he stands beside his surfboard on the beach as the sun sets. “Because of information overload, in-a-appropriate nila ang pagiging cool without really being cool. Dito, walang hipsterhipsteran. Pantay-pantay lahat. Pag nandun na sa tubig, surfers na lahat.” FH M

FOR SOME THEATER ? Find out why the stage could be the next in thing to enjoy in Pinoy PoP culture

T

hree years ago, the Philippine Educational Theatre Association (PETA) debuted Rak of Aegis. Note: this was legitimate theater, not high-brow but still in the realm of the cultured, and yet the response from audiences practically equalled that of sineng pangmasa. “I think PETA’s musical theatre has opened the doors for that to bring in people from students, enthusiast, and professionals. I mean, people came from Davao, Cebu, and even Singapore just to watch Rak of Aegis,” says Maribel Legarda, Artistic Director of PETA. Rak of Aegis is the story of a low-income community living in Barangay Venezia, a place still swamped with flood water due to a typhoon that hit the area two months ago. Several of the small businesses in the community are slowly dying out and all hope seems lost until a video of Aileen (FHM Babe, Aicelle Santos), the female protagonist, singing the popular Aegis song, “Basang-basa sa Ulan” in the rain (and flood) suddenly became viral. Suddenly, money comes into the community. In an absurdist twist, the community comes terms with the idea that they might actually need the flood that they hated for so long to be able to pull themselves out of poverty. “Everytime people say na, ‘parang Broadway musical itong Rak.’ I’d always disagree. It’s Pinoy and it’s ours. Nobody in Broadway would have shown all the trash and hardship us Filipinos have to go through in our daily lives and that’s why I think it got that much attention from all types of audiences” says Legarda. With over 300 shows in its two-year run, Rak of Aegis became the “tipping point” of PETA to tap into what Legarda calls the indifferent market. “Filipino theater really targets students from high school and universities but we made it our mission to try to expand that and infiltrate the indifferent market. These are the people who would rather go to a bar or restaurant after work,” says Legarda. A big part of tapping into this indifferent market was done through social media. “Through social media the public can now experience the world of theater like never before. They get to witness the entire production process from casting, down to the rehearsals, fittings, and photoshoots. They get to know the actors even before they see them onstage. This entire process culminates when they post their own experience of the show, which in itself is the best kind of advertising,” says Leloi Arcete, PR Supervisor of PETA. Through social media, PETA and theater in general suddenly became more accessible to the every man. Going out to watch a play wasn’t just some fancy activity rich folk do in their spare time anymore, which is very apt considering most of PETA’s productions tackle pertinent social issues. Videoke is Pinoy. Comedy, too, is Pinoy, especially in the context of how we are always able to laugh in the face of the most difficult circumstances. So it’s no surprise that Rak of Aegis resonated so loudly with Pinoys. “The thing with comedy is you can slip in all these issues that you want to discuss without the audience feeling too heavy while watching but after they laugh they’ll realize ‘oh, why am I laughing at something terrible?!’ That’s what we

tried to do with Rak,” says Legarda. Following the success of Rak of Aegis, PETA aims to continue this trend of entertaining yet insightful plays in order to build-up an audience and widen their market. It has just concluded its run of 3 Stars and a Sun, a musical featuring songs by the late, great Francis Magalona. “It was a conscious effort to use another popular music for our next production, but the similarity ends there. 3 Stars and a Sun is dystopian sci-fi in rap musical theater form. Even though both musicals were arranged by the same artist, Myke Salomon, there is a clear difference in terms of musicality and content of the two plays. While Aegis’ torch songs all tug at the heartstrings, many of Francis M’s haunting and charged songs tackle social issues, politics, and national identity,” says Arcete. Each theater production house has its own vision and purpose for theater yet, as Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, artistic director of Full House Theatre Company, would put it, “all of us just want to create a theater that is Filipino, through and through.” Resorts World Manila featured its first all-Filipino cast in its readaptation of the iconic movie, Bituing Walang Ningning back in 2015, which lasted for over a year. “The trend nowadays is to turn musicals into movies as you would see in movies like Into the Woods, but we see a lot of potential in [adapting] movies into plays. With the wealth of cinema material that Viva has this was just waiting to be picked up to become a musical, it’s just about having the right budget in order to produce the shows. Right now, the only reason why we’re not going as strong as we would like is because of budget limitations most original Filipino productions suffer from—when we produce or host English plays, it’s easier to find support,” says Lauchengco-Yulo. The influence of Rak wasn’t just limited to theater scene; even television shows like GMA’s Sunday Pinasaya was greatly influenced by this production and has featured some of the musical’s actors including Santos and theater actor, Jerald Napoles. Theatrical vaudeville has been incorporated into several shows on television, which slowly familiarizes the general audience to the humor and artistry of theater. Even though PETA and a few other small theater companies have slowly established their own niche market they can cater to the reach of theater here in the Philippines pales in comparison to how it is in western countries. “When we went to London recently for research, every theater that we visited, whether it was a weekday or a weekend, shows were always full. This is because theater is already ingrained in their culture at an early age,” says Rem Zamora, cofounder of Red Turnip Theater. But people in the theater scene are hopeful of how the public is slowly starting to be exposed to theater. “In the past five years, you’ll notice that people have really been noticing that a lot of theatre companies have been churning out shows. It’s not that there are more shows now, there have always been shows but people haven’t notice them. Now that theatre is more visible to the public eye and more people are watching shows, I’d probably call the last five years the renaissance of Philippine theatre,” says Zamora.

Bituing Walang Ningning has been adapted into three mediums so far: First ever in 1985, as the iconic film featuring then, up-andcoming actress, Sharon Cuneta; secondly in 2008, in a primetime sineserye by the same name, featuring Sarah Geronimo as the main protagonist, Dorina Suarez; most recently in 2015, where it made its theater debut in Newport Performance Arts Theater in Resorts World Manila.

Red turnip is run by five people—namely Ana Abad Santos, Topper Fabregas, Jenny Jamora, Cris Villonco, and Rem Zamora. Most of Red Turnip’s productions have been contemporary straight plays that have a fairly limited showing in the Philippines.

The auditions for 3 Stars and a Sun were a bit different from your regular musical since the actors and actresses who tried out either needed to perform “Mga Kababayan Ko”, “Girl Be Mine,” or even one of Francis M’s most challenging rap songs, “Jologs.”

The concept behind Rak of Aegis were based on real stories heard by the writer, Liza Magtoto during psycho-social debriefings that PETA held in places affected by Typhoon Ondoy.

FHM has already featured two of PETA’s beautiful actresses, Aecille Santos and Giannina Ocampo, as babes in our Verge section. With so many gorgeous women in their ranks, no wonder theater is getting this much attention. FH M

ER we’re not sure what kind of anting-anting rocco has because the actor always finds himself in the company of beautiful women. first off, he grapples with Jinri park during their jujitsu training sessions. then, he gets paid to get within close proximity of co-star/love team partner, sanya lopez. how did he get so lucky? but rocco insists that he’s far from being a baller. “i’m usually funny, confident, and cocky around girls, but when it comes to a girl that i like? talagang perfect word for that is “tiklop”!” talking to rocco, we realize that he’s more the sensitive type. Goes to show that a combination of suave and subtlety can snag the ladies just as well as out and out confidence.

M A N P R O F I L E R O C C O NACINO

Did you expect your pairing with Sanya Lopez to blow up like it did? I was surprised! I’m not usually associated with love teams because that was my way of being versatile enough to work with different actresses. But when I stuck with Sanya, people really enjoyed [our pairing] pinaniwalaan nila na may forever. How do you feel working with Sanya again on a new show? [Haplos is] Sanya’s big break and I’m really happy for her. Suportado ko siya! I’ve been helping her a lot [on how to portray] her character and how to switch off from Danaya [her role in Encantadia]. So, what I know about acting, ibinabahagi ko sa kanya. Nice! Sounds like you both get on well. Are you putting on the moves? For now, it’s a working relationship, but a blossoming one. We’ve been working together almost every day for over a year. Now, we’re doing a new project and so it’s more time for us to bond. It’s complicated, but in a good way. I really like having her around because she’s the closest friend I have. Alam mo yun? There’s a thin line and it’s hard to mix everything. So, we’ll focus on our priorities first. Maybe after the show or, we don’t know, during the show. Fair enough. Aside from the show, you’ve also got a new flick coming up, right? The movie Bar Boys is about the trials and conflicts of law students who take the bar exam. [My character] Torran is the leader of the pack, cocky and confident. He’s so sure that he’ll surpass everything because he thinks law school is easy. He’s the alpha male. Do you see yourself as the leader of the pack in real life, too? Nope. I’m showing something different as Torran. I’m more like Aquil from Encantadia, a follower. What I did was hang out with friends who were, like, leaders of barkadas so I could flesh out my character. After hanging out with these guys, what did you learn about the takecharge lifestyle? An alpha male is someone who’s confident and not afraid to take risks. He’s always on the go and tells the barkada, “Let’s do this, let’s do that,” and always has something new to offer. They maintain respect and authority within the group. Medyo tarantado rin, but in a good way. So, how does one go about earning respect from his bros? You should always be that person who starts something exciting with the group and makes it work without a hitch. Share the best ideas and make sure that everyone’s in it together. Dapat marunong kang makipag-usap and know the right words to say. “Ano kayang gagawin natin bukas? Ano

64 FH M JULY 2017

gagawin natin next week? Let’s ask [him] kasi alam niya yan.” The barkada will follow you if you have a creative mind and the confidence to back it up. Be the man with the plan. Have you experienced something similar to what your character goes through? I took the nursing board exams and I spent five to six months of being antisocial and not talking to my friends to prepare. I would just go out to study. So what made you shift to acting? I was fresh off passing the board exam and was ready to go to med school because I wanted to be a doctor. I was weighing the pros and cons. “Should I go back to school? Should I quit? Should I just grab my balls and just go with it?” I chose to be a risk-taker and jumped off the edge. Thank God I’m here now.

When you’re stressed AF, how do you recharge? I’m a really athletic person so I destress by working out and playing basketball. Jiu-jitsu is my main sport and I relieve all the pressure built up through contact sports—beating up and getting beat up by other people. I’ve also been recently flying planes somewhere north and going around Mount Arayat. It’s a good outlet for me. Speaking of jiu-jitsu, aren’t you also teammates with this month’s cover girl, Jinri Park? What’s that like? She’s badass, grabe! We’ve sparred in training and she’s shown a lot of improvement. And she’s always asking about the next session. “Is there training tomorrow? Is there training tonight? Training’s quite far but I’ll go there.” She’s really good and very enthusiastic so I’m happy she took it up. I’m sure she’ll go places with the sport. She was my main enemy in Encantadia so I got to kill her in the show, ha ha! FH M

Working out at home might not seem as effective as going to the gym. But when you force yourself to work with what you have, you’d be surprised at the results. Jaja Leonor, a fitness trainer from Quezon City, describes at-home workouts as a “challenge to literally lift yourself higher.” Together, we look at the best gym routines to get you swole from the comfort of your own home.

While not as heavy as putting on a dip belt, your triceps and lower chest will still carry about 90 percent of your body weight while doing normal dips. If you weigh about 170 lbs, that comes to around 153 lbs. Using two sturdy, heavy chairs allows you to easily adjust for width. Narrowing the gap helps you focus on the triceps, while widening it focuses on the lower chest. If you only have a single chair, then sturdy armrests can be used to achieve the same effect. “If you’re having trouble with full body dips, you can place the chairs side by side facing front and do a bench dip, cutting the weight to roughly 60 percent,” says Leonor.

A regular pushup lets you lift about 64 percent of your body weight. Doing a decline pushup with your feet propped on a bench raised about two feet off the ground gets the weight up to 75 percent and targets the upper chest. An incline pushup with your hands on the bench and your feet on the ground cuts the weight to less than 50 percent and targets the lower chest.

The longer you go, the stronger those quads get. “You can do it one leg at a time, with the other leg resting on your knee like a monk to level up the workout.”

Luckier if she’s okay with you just saying, “yes,” “no,” or “oo na lang” to everything. But fact is, you’re both getting married—so get involved somehow! If you have no idea how (we suspected that much), here are tips straight from wedding planners: Events by VRC Creative. “[When] couples insist with what they want with their limited budget, we provide them with a budget file where they can play with numbers.” An objective view like this will help minimize the arguments.

the perfect reception Make sure you both love the venue and have considered its practicality in terms of location and amenities. Can it comfortably hold your guests and suit your budget? Do they have inhouse catering services? Such are offered by well-known venues like Loreland Farm Resort in Antipolo. Aside from a spacious covered area for guests, you can enjoy the view overlooking Metro Manila at Loreland. The eighthectare resort also lets you and your guests enjoy a nice ambience and well-maintained amenities. Plus, it’s near the beautiful Antipolo Cathedral. Suit up Bela Vitug, a fashion stylist who’s worked on engagement shoots and

If you’re after affordability, you can buy at stores like Onesimus. But if you want to pamper yourself, Vin Orias and Rau Ablaza are designers I highly recommend.” preServing the memory Documenting your wedding with fancy pre-nups, dreamy photography, and sameday edit videos are very trendy these days. However, you don’t have to shell out hundreds of thousands for a complete package. “I encourage couples to think ahead— what is their style?” says Joshua de Guzman of Project JDG Weddings. So, do you really want a dramatic tear-jerking wedding video or one

that’s more light and candid? With rates ranging from P35,000 up to a whopping P200,000, choice is definitely key. geAr up for the honeymoon The point is to make the whole experience enjoyable and memorable for you both. How about Luljetta’s Place Hanging Gardens Spa in Antipolo? They offer accommodations, spa services, and romantic four-course dinners, aside from their amenities for both small, intimate weddings and for events with up to 200 guests. This way, you can start the honeymoon right after your wedding. Their facilities are also filled with beautiful foliage— perfect if you’re going for dramatic, naturethemed photos. Score! FH M

When Subaru released the fourth-generation of its legendary rally-inspired pairing–the WRX and its big brother WRX STI–the decision between the two suddenly got a lot more difficult. The WRX and STI used to share the same 2.5-liter engine (with different power levels of course), so the STI was always more desirable since it had not only more horsepower at 300PS, it also had a better suspension setup, beefier components such as bigger brakes, sturdier transmission etc. But the 2015 revision came with an all-new direct-injected 2.0L engine with a modern twin-scroll turbo–it made 268PS and 350Nm of torque, close to the same numbers as the old model but without the turbo lag, thirsty fuel consumption, and other known problems of a decades-old motor.

Suddenly the WRX wasn’t a “lesser” STI anymore, it became a choice between modern engine tech and old school Japanese muscle. Visually, with a few mods, their wide-body shells are all but identical to the untrained eye–a major plus point even if no car guy will admit that this deeply satisfies them. And most importantly, the close performance of the WRX is a crazy bargain at P1,888,000 versus the P2,598,000 sticker price of the STI. Some will say Subaru played themselves with making the WRX such a compelling purchase. But no doubt many WRX drivers who get hooked on the experience will want an STI in their garage next because it’s still the next level. In the meantime, though, there are few better ways to join the sports car ownership club than the WRX. FH M

FHM 100 Sexiest in the World 2017 FH M 1

There can be only one. This line originally comes from a cult ‘80s movie, Highlander, but right now it’s a line we would love to run through a meme generator to come up with a bunch of hilarious visual punch lines to somehow describe 2017’s 100 Sexiest List. Let’s see: there’s one with kittens fighting, Godzilla fighting some other monster, Donald Trump sitting on a leather chair... Or we could just take the picture of this year’s sexiest and stick the line in. You see, after we had churned out the numbers, we realized that we just might be responsible for sparking a riot among the rivalries in the current teen scene. Kids, you need to calm down. You should actually be celebrating. Like we said—there can be only one, but you are overlooking one important key event here: With the ascenscion of this year’s No. 1, it has become clear that you have taken over our list. What it means is that your choices will most likely dominate our list from here on out. And next year, and the year after that, and then after that, the queen of your fandom will take her place at the top of our hallowed list. When that happens, no one could be more happier than us, because it’s an assurance that the list will continue to stay vital and relevant. But right now, let’s congratulate this generation’s Queen of Sexy who’s alone at the top. It’s your time!

One of the Philippines’ finest scream queens, Iza Calzado has cemented her stature as an awesome actress and a pretty good protagonist (and sometimes antagonist perhaps) when it comes to the horror genre. But even before her career blossomed in that direction, FHM readers have always been fascinated with her good looks, the classiness that she exudes, and dare we say it… her fantastic figure.

You know what project we’d like to see Ritz Azul star in? A period piece. Maybe a turn-of-thecentury story of a woman who began poor but eventually builds a family empire. Because that’s how we see her: the truly classic Filipina who seems fragile but has strong resolve.

She’s got those expressive eyes that aren’t traditionally sexy, but would no doubt melt down a guy if she stared long enough.
