2013 PREVIEW The RedStorm will look to build off last year and their 30 win season to carry momentum into the 2013 campaign. Several newcomers will have immediate impacts, along with the returners from the 2012 season. Rio was picked #10 in the pre-season coaches’ poll and will look to grind and finish ahead of the poll. PITCHING The pitching staff returns 18 of 30 wins from the 2012 season. Senior lefthanders Ryan Robertson 4-7, 4.58 ERA and Zach Dumler 1-0, 14.14 ERA both return for their final season for the RedStorm. Robertson appears to provide the leadership on the staff as he has totaled 22 wins in his Rio career. Eric Ford will redshirt the ’13 season coming off Tommy John surgery. Four juniors return to fill their roles for Rio. Michael Deitsch returns as one of the top starters for the RedStorm. Deitsch led the staff in wins with five, added a save and set a school record for innings with 94.1. He also recorded 68 strikeouts with two complete games and opponents hit a mere .231 off Mike. Also vying for a weekend spot is David Steele. Steele was 4-5 in 8 starts with a 4.56 ERA in 53.1 innings, he also recorded 45 strikeouts to only 15 walks and opponents hit .290. Two other right handers should provide depth out of the bullpen. Dylan Perego threw in 13 games and 26.2 innings with a 3.04 ERA, he was 1-0 with 16 strikeouts and opponents hit .240, Tyler Godby was coming off an arm injury in ’12 and is expected to bolster the backend of the bullpen. Four sophomores should provide depth to the pen as they threw in 45 games as a group. Anthony Bond was 3-0 with a 3.28 ERA in 19 games, Landon Hutchison 6.32 ERA 11 strikeouts in 16 appearances, Heath Dettwiller 2.25 ERA in nine games with eight strikeouts and Nathyn Chilcote appeared in one game. Three freshmen are set to have impacts: Kyle Miller Wilmington High School and Wilmington, Ohio, Jonathan Schob Rock Hill High School and South Webster, Ohio and Kirk Yates Adena High School and Chillicothe, Ohio. CATCHING Senior Vince Perry returns as the starter for ’13. Perry hit .264 with eight doubles, a homerun and 20 RBI. Sophomore Even Hacker should provide depth and hit .250 with a triple last year in limited time. Converted infielder Grant Tamane should provide depth behind the dish as well. Newcomer Bret Starkey Washington High School and Washington Court House, Ohio should also add depth to the catching position. FIRST BASE Sophomore Kyle Findley returns as the starter. Kyle hit .278 with 10 doubles, two homeruns, 20 RBI and was the conference Gold Glove Award recipient. Senior Zach Dumler hit .429 in a pinch hitter role with two doubles and four RBI. 2013 PREVIEW SECOND BASE Senior Kyle Perez moves back to second after playing shortstop in the ’12 season. Perez .332 with five doubles, a homerun and 21 RBI. Grant Tamane hit .306 with five doubles, 23 RBI and should add depth all around the infield. Daulton Kenyon from Portsmouth West High School and West Portsmouth, Ohio should add depth to the position. SHORTSTOP West Virginia University transfer Isac Franklin should anchor the infield. Franklin hit .262 in 26 games for the Mountaineers with two doubles and 10 RBI while fielding .964. Freshman Shane Pack Piketon High School and Piketon, Ohio should add depth to the position. THIRD BASE Lakeland Community College transfer Andy Mitroff should compete for the starting job at the hot corner. Mitroff was All-Conference at third base for Lakeland. Two dual role players should press for playing time at third in Freshman Kirk Yates and sophomore Anthony Bond. Utility player Grant Tamane could also see action at third. OUTFIELD The outfield will be the deepest and most contested positions on the diamond. Two seniors return for their final season with the RedStorm; Phil Dumont and Shane Spies. Spies provided the pop for the RedStorm in ’12 hitting .319 with 21 doubles, 12 homeruns, 50 RBI and First Team All-Conference honors. Vying for playing time are four sophomores. Luke Taylor who hit .255 with five doubles, one homerun and 24 RBI who also was the conference Gold Glove recipient. 2012 REVIEW In the 2012 season, a youth movement for the RedStorm baseball team produced another 30 win season. A starting line-up that routinely saw 5 freshmen grew as a unit and finished the season with two post-season victories. The RedStorm were picked 8th in the pre-season coaches poll in the highly competitive Mid-South Conference. The season began with six consecutive losses, four at the hands of Bryan and two of those losses to nationally ranked St. Xavier and Madonna University. The RedStorm got on track with their first win of the season in the Tennessee Valley Invitational Tournament versus Tennessee Temple University. The RedStorm finished off the second weekend with a loss to #2 Lee University. The RedStorm began a home swing with five wins in a row, three over Roosevelt University, and single victories over Miami-Hamilton and Glenville State as the offense started clicking. Heading into conference play the RedStorm were a game under .500 at 6-7. At Pikeville, the RedStorm lost the conference opener but came home winning the series, winning two out of three games; a 7-9 loss, a 6-3 win, and a 12-3 win. The RedStorm returned home to get over the .500 hump with a 14-1 win over Salem International improving their record to 9-8. The improving RedStorm split with UVA-Wise in soggy field conditions and lost a game to in climate weather heading to Florida, 3-2 in conference play and 10-9 overall. The RedStorm began the Florida trip with a bang on Vince Perry’s walk-off 2 run homerun victory in the bottom of the 7th over St. Francis University (IN). They never looked back as they won all 6 games in Florida; 3 more wins over St. Francis and 2 wins over nationally ranked Indiana Tech bringing their overall record to 16-9. The RedStorm came back home and ran their winning streak to 8 as they defeated WV Tech in a non-conference double header. The Golden Bears then returned the favor with a home sweep of the RedStorm leaving Rio at 18-11 overall. The RedStorm tallied a home win over Otterbein 7-6 before losing all three games to eventual conference champion Lindsey Wilson 3-9, 2-3, and 1-13. Rio won two non-conference games over Ohio Christian and UC-Clermont to improve to 21-14. The RedStorm won four out of their next five games as they improved to 25-15 with a series win over the University of the Cumberlands 9-7, 3-5, 7-5, taking two out of three games and sweeping Salem International. This improved their conference record to 5-3. The RedStorm lose their next six conference games and free fall from 4th to 8th in the MidSouth Conference at the hands of conference rival Shawnee and Georgetown. Rio split a pair of non-conference games with Glenville State and losing to Miami-Hamilton brought the overall record to 26-22. Second place Campbellsville came to town for the final home games of the season and defeated the RedStorm twice to win the series and leave Rio at 27-24 heading into their final doubleheader with Ohio Christian. At Ohio Christian the RedStorm split the final series to finish the regular season 28-25. Heading into the Mid-South Conference tournament the RedStorm earned the # 8 seed and played a play in game versus Pikeville. Rio defeated Pikeville on a squeeze in the bottom of the 10th to earn its right to play the #1 seed Lindsey Wilson. The Rio tourney magic continued with a 3 run homerun by senior Brian Suerdick to give the RedStorm the upset, a 6-3 victory and the 30th win of the season. The Championship game of the winner’s bracket found Rio playing rival Shawnee. The RedStorm lost 3-8 in the championship game of the winners bracket and then lost 6-7 to UVA-Wise to finish 5th in the tournament and a 30-27 overall record.
