# food

Eating with your eyes Though its main purpose has always been a means of survival, the role food plays has evolved into so much more. Today, the act of eating is expected to yield a heightened sensory experience one can enjoy alone or share with others. It’s become a vehicle for self-expression and reflection; an excuse to get together; a way to learn, listen and bond. #Foodporn is one of the most frequently used hashtags on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest feeds are flooded with an abundance of food pictures. But what is food porn really? Something that makes your taste-buds tingle? An outrageous display of decadence? or just food in motion being dripped, drizzled and covered with oozing cheese. Moreover, food porn is experienced globally. Language barriers that exist culturally can be bypassed by the usage of #foodporn. Food porn is used collectively by the online users and does not exclude or privilege one food over another.

Viewing food porn can induce salivation, not to mention the release of digestive juices as the gut prepares for what is about to come. Instagrammable food is becoming increasingly vital to millennials, that aesthetics are everything. Utilizing brightly coloured food and giving consideration to artful style and arrangement can drive intrigue and engagement. This puts the pressure on cafe’s and restaurants to deliver beyond visual appeal and taste good - otherwise customers will not come back.

Instagram

changing the way we eat By Tia MacGillivray

From rainbow unicorn Frappuccinos to impossibly tall burgers dripping in cheese, trendy food aimed at 20-somethings are now almost entirely focused on asthetic and rarity. We live in an age of visual access, technology creates a pull towards nostalgia and futurism, leaving many social media users straining to keep up and longing to slow down as the document their lives online. The idea of more, huge and crazy is almost necessary now: everything in axcess. People want to get their follwers exited, and what’s more exciting than something so visual? Even if you havent stood in a line for a cronut, and may have found yourself searching for the perfect lighting and hashtags to post about your bougie brunch. It’s a culture thats pretty hard to escape. Theres no question that social media has s amajor effect on how the modern resturant industry operates. Food finders like Zomato has a section dedicated to “30 Most Insta-worthy

Eateries”. So aesthetically pleasing even the most camera shy will have their phones out at these Insta-perfect havens. Steve Zagor, Dean of Culinary Business and industry studies states that thinkign about food aethetics is a must. If he doesnt see anyone taking their phones out at a restaurant to take photos, he considers it a failure to “make a memorable experience.” Even something as simple as lighting can make or break a business. If your resturant is too dark, no one will want to take and post photos, and then you wont be able to keep up. It seems that most social media posts, are rooted more in fantasy and a pleasing colour palette than in reality. Instagram has become so pervasive in our lives that its influence on food trends likely wont let up. However theres a big difference between a longstanding trend like beautiful food that catches your eye and a passing fad.

Best Cheeses for Melting By Tia MacGillivray

#cheeseporn

Theres something about that ooey, gooey glory that you melt and stretch and pull and gaze longingly at. But what’s the best melting cheese? What varieties get you that gratuitous cheesy pull you’re after? Younger, fresher cheese is going to give you a better melt. You know the softer stuff. Here’s our top picks.

1 American American is on the list, yes, we’re calling it cheese, and it’s the meltiest there ever was or will be. There’s nothing better than burgers will American melted cheese dripping off a beef patty. Getting hungry yet?

2 Mozzarella

You know the deal with mozzarella. It’s pizza’s companion, the champion of the cheese pull scenario. For the best flavor, look for balls of fresh mozzarella.

3 Cheddar Cheddar is here for all your oozy dairy needs. Whether you’re making a classic grilled cheese, shredded cheddar melts extremely well. It also brings that slightly sharp quality to the table to keep things interesting. If you want melty, go for younger cheddars rather than the aged ones which will be sharper and don’t melt as well.

4 Fontina

Fontina can be buttery and a bit fruity made from raw milk made from Italian cow’s. This cheese is a super melter and is great in frittatas and grilled cheese.

5 Raclette

An honorable mention, ever see a warmed half wheel of cheese scraped with a knife? So all of it falls onto mountain of potatoes or meat. It’s a Swiss or French cows milk that brings fruity, sweet notes to the table and its creamy as hell, which is what we want.

oh baby!

COMPS Hurry... Hurry eat faster! By Alisha Cochran

“For years, people have been heading to YouTube to spend upwards of 60 minutes at a time to watch strangers consume 4,000 or more calories in one sitting. Not only that, many of these viewers are paying to indulge in this binge-viewing, binge-eating privilege” -TodayShow. (2018, February 23).

Speed eating is one of the older food challenges that still is very popular on YouTube with competitors like Matt Stonie consume a Burritozilla (huge burrito) in under 2 minutes and Furious Pete’s “Eating a bacon Mcdouble in 10 seconds”. It’s honestly intriguing to watch and wonder how their stomachs hold all that food! Picture Credits

The high-calorie challenge has arisen through the last couple of years as influencers push themselves to consume thousands and thousands of calories of food in a set period. It’s absurd, the number of calories some manage to consume, in one video two people eat a total of 120,000 calories in 24 hrs and Matt Stonie finishing a whopping 11,000 calorie ice cream sundae. It does indulge viewers in the dedication and eagerness that they have to complete their set calorie goal truly. These food challenges and videos have no intention in dying down in views any time soon. They have entertained people all around the world helping with many cravings, relaxation, intrigue, education but most of all it explores how food is life and the love relationship we have with food.

A SMR

Snap, crackle & Pop How about these guilty pleasures?

The CRUNCH of a pickle, the SQUISHING and CRACKLING of a packet of Allen’s snakes, CHEWING of crabsticks and the PEELING of fruit, does this tickle your fancy?

For some, the sound of others eating anger them, but some thrive off of loud chewing and the sounds of slurping, where they can’t get enough of it! This is where ASMR influencers like SAS-ASMR and Gabi ASMR on YouTube have made a living off on creating an abundance of these audible videos of them eating with millions of subscribers and views.

ASMR is the Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response; it is the high definition supply of audio or visuals that stimulate the listener, with most experiencing the sensation of tingles and pulsing energy through the spine to the head. It doesn’t just stop there; these sounding videos soothe and manage to make the audience feel personally connected with the narrator, and in some cases has managed to help a few cope with depression or chronic pain.

Mukbangs and ASMR videos work hand in hand, creating the perfect video for millions of foodies out there. Youtuber Zach Choi and American YouTuber Trisha Paytas, often perform in videos with food, with the honed sounds of slurping, crunching and chewing and many other noises emitted while eating giving many devotees allround entertainment and the ‘’tingles’’.

Organic food benefits By Patrycja Wolniewicz

Throughout the years the organic industry has risen to peaks, opened individuals eyes and asked people to question the food they consume. Is the food we eat on a daily basis good for us? Is it beneficial for us in the future? Many people don’t have time to spend time growing and nurturing their gardens. Like most of us, human beings are too busy working, studying instead of growing our own food. As we end up going to the closest shop and buy packaged fruit and vegetables wrapped in plastic. but do we know what we put in our own body? More and more, people are choosing organic food over the supermarket standard. Big industry’s such as Woolworths and Coles apply chemical fertilisers to make the plant grow faster, spraying insecticides which reduces pests and disease, and other chemicals to get rid of weeds. Not only are fruits and vegetables affected but the agricultural sector apply antibiotics, growth hormones and medication to animals to prevent diseases.

This CAN NO’T be good for us! Fun Facts : • • •

Animals are NOT given antibiotics, growth hormones, or fed animal byproducts. Organic food is often fresher because it doesn’t contain preservatives. Organic farming is better for the environment.

Veganism is a growing movement in modern society. Animals suffer a lot for human consumption. Particarlly in farms where they are mistreated and abused. Countless videos have been leaked of inside slaughter houses worker hitting and abusing animals before killing them. Vegans animal ethics extent to beyond farm animals and playing into multiple fassets of their lives.
