The Sackler Building
Instructor | Yugon Kim
Royal Academy of Arts, London
existing structure
The new Sackler Building is the first phase of a new campus for the Royal College of Art, London. Haworth Thompkins convert a single story factory building into a series of new day lit spaces by removing the original pitched roof and inserting a new independent steel structure within the existing brick enclosure. The roof structure is a “saw-tooth form which utilizes a prefabricated system of perforated metal lining panels and glazing bars. It also consists of a double row of north facing lights per bay, which provide maximum light without direct glare from the sun. The building consists of a natural ventilation system based on air movement from low-level windows up to the circular roof vents in the apex of each roof bay. The ground floor studios are the main source of the fresh air intake and consist of two vents, the upper of which stay open at night in summer to enable secure night-time cooling of the space. resource : Haworth Tompkins

“The prospect of redesigning one of New York’s legendary restaurants in one of the world’s most distinguished modernist buildings was as inviting as it was daunting. The architecture of the new restaurant respectfully challenges many of the tenets of modernism”. Diller + Scofidio

Diagram 1 Concept & Feature diagram “The most important link to Mies’s plan is the emphasis Ms. Diller and Mr. Scofidio have placed on the relationship between interior and exterior space. In the procession from the street, across the plaza, into the elevator lobby on Park Avenue, Mies dramatized the reduction of the Seagram Building’s wall to a transparent membrane and the erosion of the division between interior and exterior space. Ms. Diller and Mr. Scofidio pick up the theme with an interplay between openness and enclosure, evident in the spatial relationship between the booths and the bar, and in the screening device of the pear wood shell.” HERBERT MUSCHAMP(1999, New York Times)

The new space
Old & New (Adaptability of Existing Conditions) The new exhibition space wraped both the chapel and the ruins. Also, the 600mm-thick brick structure sits on the top of remnants of the brick-stone wall, and its 24m-high ceiling covers the whole archeological area.

Comparison between Kolumba Art Museum and Jewish Museum
Instructor | Liliane Wong
This is the fenestration pattern on three elevations; you can see the windows gradually changing in the vertical direction. The original windows of the church were filled with blocks and lost their ways of being entrance of light. On the second floor, the perforated bricks are the mainly material of the new as well as the way of welcoming light. High windows and French windows on the third floor make the fenestration pattern more directly and bold
The biggest difference between the two museums is the renovation stratergy. As for the Kolumba Art Museum, the new space hugs the existing area. Whereas, the Danish Jewish Museum is the building within the building.
Intro to Design Studio | Fall 2012
These diagrams show the relationship between space and circulation. In kolumba Museum, the path is only a path through the space. But in the Jewish Museum, the space and the path share the same shape.
Ya o Ya o | S i j i a Y u | J i n g Z u o
Comparison between Kolumba Art Museum and Jewish Museum
In Kolumba Museum, the new bricks are well connected to the old ones. They are manipulated in the similar color system in a gentle way.
Instructor | Liliane Wong
While in Jewish Museum, the architect tried to make a huge contrast with plywood covering the original bricks.
In Kolumba Museum, the lighting on the first floor combines natural and artificial light with the perforated bricks and overhead lighting. High windows and French window, as the mainly source of lighting on the second and third floor bring natural light to the exhibition areas of the museum. While in Jewish Museum, the whole space is dramatically lit up by artificial light.
In Kolumba Museum, the wooden bridge makes people get much closer to the historical site and tangible ruins. While in the Jewish Museum, the architect took inspiration from the experience of being on the boat; try to make people to feel, to experience, to memorize. It is more like an intangible kind of thing.

The Merida government decided to build up this National Museum of Roman Art on the Roman archeological ruins. The new building is adaptived to the dug down ruins, which not only provide a shelter protecting the archieological ruins, but also make a storage and display space for the archeological relics. The whole system is like a clear jug with the lid on. Address, C/Jose Roman Melida, s/n 06800 MERIDA

Tadao Ando’s design implications were to minimalize all aspects of this project by completely gutting the inside of the building, removing all of its interior history. The existing exterior walls were left completely untouched, while Ando inserted new materials, or his signature material, of concrete. He created a dialogue between old and new elements, a link between the history of the building, its present, and its future. Intro to Design Studio | Fall 2012

“The renovation project, which aims to fit out all the space in the building, included various different types of work: from protection against water to structural consolidation and restoration of the masonry structures, from the utility ducts and electrical wiring to the architectural concrete elements, the flooring, the outside door and window and frames, the roof, reconfiguration of the existing lofts and restoration of the sculptures.

The Gasometer City, in the suburban district of Simmering are a cluster of four enormous gas tanks, with their impressive 70 meter-high brick walls, had the capacity to provide gas to a large part of the population.
The four gasometers, part of what was once the largest gasworks on Continental Europe was adapted to become the heart of a multifunctional new district of Vienna. Today the development contains approx. 600 apartments — in-line with the policy of socially mixed housing, with both rented homes as well as private dwellings, a student residence for 400 occupants, a concert hall for up to 4.000 visitors, offices and a shopping centre.

In Gasometer A by Nouvel, the apartments in the 9 segmental building elements are reached from 3 staircase cores and 6 access decks. Some of the façades of the apartments face outwards, some towards the central internal courtyard that has been made as an open atrium. The floor of the internal courtyard forms a glass dome that lights the retail areas and separates them from the housing. The “night-mall“ below is connected with the multi-purpose hall in section B and forms a continuous mall level in all four gasometers.

1 For the 2009 Manchester International Festival, Zaha Hadid and her design team created the JS Bach Chamber Music all, at the Manchester Art Gallery. It was designed to house solo performances of Johann Bach’s spectacular Music.

JS Bach Chamber Music Hall
Project 1 | Existing Construct
The space of the gallery used, was primarily designed for visual art, which was a challenge for Zaha Hadid architects. They had to find a solution to the scale of the space, how to intergrade an installation that dealt with the acoustic necessities of a music hall while meeting it’s structural requirements. In addition to these problems they were also facing budget limitation. To resolve their challenges, Zaha Hadid requested a fabricator to find a feasible structure solution that would meet her design ideas. She also consulted an acoustic consultant and a tensile structural engineer to find a way to enhance the acoustics. Using the specialists advises, they designed a chamber music hall in which they used a single continuous ribbon of fabric that swirled around it self, making layered spaces to give the audience a special experience in a fluid space by integrating a formal and structural logic.
