URBAN REGULATIONS AND POLICIES SEMESTER 8, SPRING 2022 Sillaka Marathi| BALANCE
The aim is to have a vision for the site in Mumbai and then developing the design through design keeping in mind the current regulations and the policies of the city. Different processes have been followed to design through medium of collages and free design to undersatnd the complexities of the city and how the design changes when different constraints comes into play.
impacts of the act
Śillaka Mumbai Mumbai A land of dreams but lacking space on its feet. Our Vision is to bridge the contrast between the two different economic groups through affordable housing and improve open - green spaces, accessibility along with connectivity across the site.

Site These issues also manifest themselves evidently in the chosen site, Kamala Mills, situated in South Bombay. Owing to the location, it is very well connected to the rest of the city, through all modes of transportation.
Grid formation and the axes for the connectiv and accessibility
The site has changed drastically over the past few decades, and a significant usage of land to construct high rise buildings, restaurants, and other recreational hubs. However, all this development has occurred towards the west side of the site, while the eastern face is surrounded by chawls, public housing schemes (MHADA),

Some significant problems that can be seen on the site include the disparity in land usage patterns, lack of open spaces, (private or public), lack of connectivity from west Building to Height ( in m ) east of the site, and the stark contrast 1 - 3

The aim of the project is to encourage women to spend more time on the street, and not just as a means to complete certain chores. The interventions are such that they help in creating and encouraging a woman-friendly experience of the street, adding on to their movement. The aim was also to make the edges more active and to create spaces that cater to women of all age groups. Through these interventions, there is an attempt to make it a more pedestrian-friendly street.

Breaking the divider: Allowing the flow of movement from one side of the street to another The reason is also that women have to take longer routes to reach the other side because of the height of the divider.

Designing a library for a community like the Loving community, where people face not just economic difficulties, but are ailing from diseases like leprosy. The main idea was to create slopes on opposite sides of a solid mass, which would enable connections to web formed within the community in the form of a common space. This allows for the formation of a space for the two communities to come together. Creating access from the top which allows them to play on the landscape and the curiosity of exploring places of study within the space of play.

SITE: KATWARIA SARAI, NEW DELHI AIM AND OBJECTIVES: The theme was a [Un]neutral design, the proposal focuses on providing a public washroom for women. The intent was to provide a space for women, where they can spend time, and yet, have their own sense of privacy. The project also identifies the problems faced by women in public spaces and tries to use these paramters to provide comfortable toilets that aim to change the conventional idea of public washrooms in India. - Gender + Ethenic+ age inclusive - Reduced mobility and strength - Impaired Eyesight/hearing - New borns and kids

Re-imagining sanitation for women in in the face of severe patriarchal limita
hi
What? The Ring is a female public toilet unit. Amenities within the toilet include a WC, washbasin, a changing station, and segregated disposal for sanitary napkins and other waste. The toilet is equipped with elements of universal accessibility including broad doors to accommodate wheelchairs and handrails across the toilet, to ensure that it may be used by differently abled users with ease as well.
India, ations. anguthi Ring, band, signet(Hindi) anuthi unique. special (Hindi)
Brick walls create a small, shaded pavilion around the toilet which has more amenities including sitting or waiting spaces, vending machines for sanitary napkins and taps for drinking water. At night, the bright structure is a beacon on dark streets, not just illuminating its surroundings, but acting as a highly noticeable landmark, where a woman may seek shelter if she is being followed or attacked.
How? 1. The Ring is built with burnt-clay bricks, a cheap and locally available building material which has low carbon emissions and negligible construction skill or cost. These bricks are arranged in louvered screens, encouraging natural ventilation, and light penetration without compromising the privacy of the space. 2. The same bricks are organised in layers on the South-West façade (direction of maximum solar radiation in India) for thermal lag and extruded to minimise solar radiation, through shading. This ensures a comfortable environment throughout the year, without any artificial provisions for temperature control, even in the harsh Indian summers. 3. The Ring also uses affordable and readily available technologies including solar- powered lights and rainwater harvesting systems for the toilet complex. This ensures that even in the situation of a power cut or water shortage (common problems in urban India), the facility remains well-lit, clean and fully functional.
Why? In India, the only socially accepted place for the women’s body is within the privacy of the home. Accessing the public space is ‘permitted’ only for domestic duties, with the expectation of returning once the task is complete. By design, proper sanitation facilities are rarely available to women in the public domain. This significantly reduces the amount of time, and degree of comfort with which they can occupy public spaces, since they are unable to relieve themselves in a hygienic and safe manner. When public spaces and the amenities within them, impose normative limits upon women’s behaviour, they reinforce this vicious cycle of discrimination, ultimately exacerbating the marginalisation of the women’s access to the city. Thus, as an urban insert, the Ring relooks at the ‘bathroom’ as being more than just a utilitarian amenity. Instead, it reimagines access to sanitation for women in India, as empowerment in the face of severe patriarchal limitations.
Sustainable Development Goals 2030 The Ring is not just a form, but a system. It is designed to be architecturally durable and functionally self-sustainable. Thus, it is a highly flexible toilet prototype, whose form may be adapted to different urban contexts in India, where it may target societal norms against women in the city. SDGs addressed through the project include SDG 5: Gender Equality, SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.

THE WATER TEMPLE: QUECHUA DESIGN COMPETITION THE CIRCLE OF LIFE SITE: BASALTIC PRISMS OF SANTA MARIA REGLA, MEXICO The temple replaces the idea of a destination with the idea of a journey. The nature of the journey is a loop, where the descent is a contemplative one and the retreat is a reflective one. The ‘sanctum’ is divided into smaller modules that dot the landscape and give different experiences within nature. These are places of contemplation and introspection where one finds solitude. At the end of the descent is a space for collective meditation. The retreat is a path along the untouched prisms. The temple is seen as a place of being and relation for the locals as well as a place of wonder and excitement for the tourists.

THE TREE HOUSE, ARCHDAILY SITE: LONAVALA, MAHARASHTRA, INDIA Our experiences as children shape our choices as adults. Treehouses are what we all desire for trees, at some point in our childhood. What we desire for ourselves. The desire to climp upamidst the branches at the level of birds perched cozily in their nests, looking at the world from above, lying under the blanket of leavfy branches crisscrossing below the harsh sun. But we also desire a level floor, our cosy beds and woolen blankets to warm us in the cold night. Tree house are what we desire for ourselves. The forested western ghats near the lake pavana, are the home to a large biodiversity; from lion tailed Macaques and Malabar gret hornbills to the grey headed bullbuls and Nilgiri Martins. Amidst this rich flora and fauna, in the humid tropical forest lies the site. PROCESS DIAGRAMS
