Aim - To design a building in a way that it can be used in multiple ways. building use plan

built-unbuilt plan

Most of the area in the whole site consists of residential and commercial Saraspur consists majorly of big open chunk lands or a congested areas and lack of liveable recreational spaces and so the main concern built up area without any open land so to create intervention in design will be primarily focusing on public recreational activities. in a way that gives equal importance to built and un-built.

- Providing open plaza for people of saraspur and rathyatra as the site exists.

public space school space

The above site is kept as an urban plaza so that it can be utilized for rath yatra and the built program is placed on the lower site.

Public spaces are kept on the front side and school on rear side.

Concerns - Most of the areas in Saraspur are either residential or commercial and there are no public and recreational spaces. - Many industrial lands have been either abandoned or encroached. - Most of the schools are in need of redevelopment because of lack of infrastructure facilities and no open grounds for them.

Massing is placed in a way forming open spaces for school and public plus an transition space beneath the public library with few cantilevered spaces at above levels.

14

Massing is placed in a way forming open spaces for school and public and an transition space beneath the public building and mass was placed in a pattern forming small open spaces between few blocks.

RISHABH JUNEJA PORTFOLIO

Massing is placed in a way forming open spaces for school and public plus an transition space beneath the public library with few cantilevered spaces at above levels with play in levels and there is a play in heights of mass to break the monotony.

Orientation of the built up in such a way that open spaces be given efficiently for public on part connected to main road and for school connected to secondary road.

reimagining ‘architecture’ in mixed use vertical development

thesis project

HYPOTHESIS Looking towards the future of Indian metropolitan cities which will be having tall vertical skylines, and in this urban era, everything is getting closer and compact. The cities which were developing horizontally before, have now started to develop vertically due to rapid urban influx of population. Due to urbanisation taking place at a higher rate in India, population have been migrating to metro cities leading to higher density in those areas. According to a survey by world bank India would be one of the countries to face urban population surge by 2050. So, to address its shortcomings an approach must be taken in order to create better living environments in high density areas meeting the need of the future by bringing essential requirements of humans into single environment with consideration of parameters like sustainability, more green areas with urban farming in the project. Looking forward to essential needs of future by creating a mixed use development which includes this three types of spaces to live fulfilled, connected lives: their “first place” (home) for private relief: their “second place” (work) for economic engagement; andOFFICE their “third place”, a more SPACE formless arena used for reaffirming social bonds and community identities which could be achieved by creating a development which is in vertical layers one above the other creating multi-layered and multi-dimensioned organism so that essential requirements are in the reach of the people living there. Imagining the vertical city, is a concept aiming to develop a system which is not just a high end housing infrastructure but is a vessel that houses a justified complex network of functions present SOCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL in a horizontal city hoisted vertically so as to create a similar ambience with a CULTURAL balance of comfort and elegance in the user’s lifestyle and aims at being a modulated prototype solution for the future of Indian cities which can be multiplied to face the upcoming future urban challenges more efficiently. RECREATIONAL RESIDENTIAL SERVICES OFFICE ADMINISTRATION COMMERCIAL Image depicting the congestion caused in everyday life in Mumbai while commuting.

Overlapping spaces in a vertical manner.

Illustration of vertical and horizontal development in a city.

AIM An approach to architectural innovation for vertical development in denser cities of India.

WHY VERTICAL? They serve to fit a lot of floor space in comparatively small amount of ground surface because of their immense height.

Article about population in Mumbai.

Mumbai crowding article.

WHY MUMBAI?

• The densest city, crowdiest and one of the populous city in India with facing issues like rapid urbanisation, population explosion and urban sprawl. • Mill lands which are still vacant are considered for the development as the lands are still abandoned and kept unused. • Opportunity in Mumbai to develop vertical structure is due to higher F.S.I. availability, vertical skyline.

Many mill plots have been used for re-development and many structures have been developed so far and few of them are in abandoned condition which can be considered for redevelopment.

SITE LAYOUT WITH IMMEDIATE CONTEXT - The site is adjoining to a busy street with a lot of commercial activities taking place. - Heavy pedestrian movement is seen on the streets around the site.

Section through North-South axis.

Section through East-West axis.

SITE DESCRIPTION The site is a flat land with wild vegetation and the abandoned mill structures. The structures have been partly demolished by N.T.C. There are several high rises in the Lower Parel area close to site such as World One 117 storey high, Omkar 1973, Raheja Imperia, Lodha Trump, and many more.

STRENGTH

WEAKNESS

- Worli metro station is proposed 900 metre walk from site. - Far from the Lower Parel Railway station - Considerably large site area for development. (Central Line). - Easy approach to Bandra-Worli Sea link. - Limited approach to site from Main road. - Aerial view of sea above 75 feet. (as per World One). - Majorly surrounded by residential and commercial spaces. - F.S.I Availability.

S OPPORTUNITY - Site located in the vicinity of tall structures like World One. - Work space requirement.

SHADOW ANALYSIS

W C

CHALLENGES

Shadows are casted for the same time in the whole year and overlapped to see the affect of shadow on site.

- Highly congested area. - Lack of open green spaces. - Strong wind force. - Rainfall amount in Mumbai. - High summer temperature.

Around morning time 10:00 there is a shadow casted on the site area in the months of november - february and the rest of the day the site remains shadow free.
