Rushikesh Wadnere “Architecture aims at eternity�, this quote could only be appled by helping humanity in creating buildings of tomorrow that preserves the idea of today and also has reflections of the past. While pursuing my B.Arch degree, i was introduced to landscape architecture and was keen to learn how architecture and landscape binds together to create a large or small scale quality space. Thus lead me to embark my journey in this field, so i decided to spend my endeavour in one of the best landscape firms in Ahmedabad. Landscape firm, Beyond Green, headed by Ar. Bobby Sujan and Ar. Rucha Nangare, where I got exposed to varient typology of landscape projects, fetching me an opportunity of designing and executing projects ranging from individual residences to housing schemes, commercial to hospitality, recreational to contemporary landscape in my tenure of two years. Office followed great discipline in working with strict deadline and at very extreme pace, exercising this kind of routine culminated in accentuating personal skills like multi-tasking and decisive behavior. In spite of this intense compact schedule it was a imperative to keep room for experimentation at design level. The idea of perceiving landscape has matured with time and after pursuing my masters degree in landscape architecture from Cept university, i am able to create a comprehensive base in this vast field of landscape. Background: This project is located in one of the prime location of Ahmedabad City, adjacent to the S.G. high way which is supposed to be the future corporate stretch, still under construction. Cliental of this project is also one of the biggest construction house of Ahmedabad handling many big scale projects in the city. They always demanded for precise and quality drawings with detail of every inch of the project, with mock model of each and every element to be made on site before construction which provided an brief idea of the project. Our job was to create an identity to a space through landscape as we were left with very less space for designing after leaving margins according to the by laws.

Also addition of basement parking left us with minimum level difference in the central plaza. Thus it was a challenge with less scope to design a functional plaza with great aesthetic al value attracting buyers to such expensive property. Design Proposal: Design intent included a conceptual idea which will provide a quality space enhancing the environment of entire plaza area and culminating into an a space providing enriching experience to all your senses. This process granted us a set of guidelines to innovate spaces which accentuates sense of touch through different material textures, sense of smell

Sunken deck along lily pond surrounded with grasses

by planting flagrante species, sense of hearing through wind sculpture and sense of sight by balancing the hard scape and soft scape through unique informal spaces like water body which was implemented as lily pond with low level deck to give a soothing experience amidst green and water. Vegetation selected for this project also creates a contrast with the hard scape in colour and texture, also decision was taken not to use trees with big foliage which will obstruct the visual connection between the blocks. All the seating elements are designed by using different finishes to the stone material.

Illuminating the spaces after sunset

> Lighing is an integral part of landscape deisgn and plays an important role in changing the over all ambience of the project after sunset. In this project the concept behind lighting was to highlight quality plaza spaces, through step light focusing on reflective surfaces emphasizing the floor pattern texture. Also tree uplighters were used to accentuate the sculptural feature of the trees and palms. Thus the circulation in the plaza was lighted up using low height light fixtures defining the elegance and richness of the project.

Background: West Gate is supposed to be the most exclusive corporate property built on S.G. high way, road touched. And it is most highest corporate towers built in Ahmedabad up till now. Moreover the architecture language of the project is quite modern compared to the buildings nearby. Thus it is also well reflected in our landscape design so that the architecture and landscape merges as one and makes a complimenting dialogue with each other. A lot of good and reputed agencies were involved in completion of this project. Talking about the real practical issues which i learned to deal with was the amount of time provided for landscape after construction of architectural building and final inauguration was less leaving very small window for land-

scape design. Therefore, work schedule was kept tight without any chances of glitches, along with the phase wise execution to match with the dead line. Design Proposal: The design strategy revolved around the idea of integrating architecture and the landscape to look as one. So the meaning behind the structure of the building was redefined from the perspective of landscape, accentuating the main character of the building, the linear vertical members showcased in the facade. The concept emerged from the structure, where this vertical axis meet ground plaza and were perpetuated through out the plaza.

Thus landscape design for West Gate came up with linear bands of hard scape providing spaces for plaza and bands of soft scape breaking the monotony and providing open green spaces. Also water bodies were oriented with these band to create micro climate, making the atmosphere of the place live and aesthetically appealing.

Above images show the customized elements used in this projects such as vertical column and stone in flooring.

Background: This project is situated on one of the major developing commercial area on road front side and is aligned with the service lane, detaching it from the S.G. high way, here wide medians incorporating informal spaces acts as buffer space. Thus commercial building comprises of open plaza in front, side ally for reaching back side and rear plaza surrounded by neighboring buildings. As the building comprises of offices and showrooms, the client’s

imperative demand was to accommodate parking place for four wheelers as well as design a striking landscape that adds to the value of the project. Design Proposal: According to above mentioned design brief we came up with the concept of articulating the building with the highway using landscape as a platform.

Eight pins are the imperative landscape elements, strategically oriented along the column edge avoiding any kind of visual disturbance and incorporating parking place for four wheelers in between. Material and texture of this elements were decided to attract attention of the people even from the main road.

Design Proposal: This project involves a residential building where ground floor serves as commercial bay on the road side and remaining 13 floors above are residential apartments with pent houses on top. This provides us an opportunity to design landscape for commercial, residential as well as terrace garden simultaneously. So the project is segregated into four parts with commercial bay at ground floor on road side, common plot area on ground floor inside the complex for residential purpose, terrace garden are oriented above commercial shops. Also adding to the facade of the building increasing esthetical value. And lastly private terrace gardens part of pent house on top floor.

The main challenge was to ensemble all this parts with similar design language. We also convinced client for experimenting in front commercial landscape where we have provided plaza spaces for some shops on the stake of four wheeler parking. This plaza spaces included amenities like ramp for disable people, concealed dust bin provision and seating area with buffer plantation. Same as landscape freely maneuvers along commercial bay, similar language is adopted in common plot area by creating spaces designed by land modulation.

Design Proposal: Project comprises of a housing scheme which consists of eight different towers surrounded by common open plot. In such housing schemes the purpose of a common plot is to cater all required amenities but the question, as a landscape architects how can we make a difference ? So the conceptual idea behind designing the landscape for this project was to create a continuous green corridors culminating at the common plot area, inviting people to the green utopia.

Though overall design crux focuses on the common plot area, one would experience the glimpse of green through nuances which maneuvers the user through green corridors and guiding to the destination, the green open space where one can celebrate within nature. We want people to conceive this place as a coherently integrated with green, so we successfully convinced client to use up some of the tight parking area into seating plazas and planters, giving a look as if green is intervened with the buildings. Introduction: Humans have been connected to river since ancient times right from Indus valley civilization to the recently designed waterfronts. We are associated with the river water as an element in many different ways such as spiritually, economically, functionally and aesthetically and as time changes the importance of these values also keeps on changing. Often rivers are considered to be the natural drain for disposing all waste water, which also includes hazardous industrial and chemical waste. Thus the river is being referred as nala degrading the water quality. And hence further intervention is done concreting the edges and removing the natural vegetation culminating in despoliation of the existing riparian zone and ecosystem prevailing there. In this case Vishwamitri River in Baroda is taken as subject to study and tried to raise questions about what will happen to the existing ecological niches and existing biodiversity. Issues at Regional scale: As the river originates from the basalt formation Mt. Pavagadh which falls in Panchmahal district, and also due to lack of vegetation near the foothills and surrounding areas heavy run off and erosion is observed. The river water gets polluted with chemical disposed from industries and the untreated sewage disposals due to which the ecology of the river is getting affected which can be great threat for the important species living there like crocodiles. Due to the poor condition of the Vishwamitri River people has lost the connection with the river resulting in back facing properties and compound walls with fencing and old temple ghats are fading their importance which are important cultural heritage of the city.

Masters of Landscape Architecture Thesis - 2017

One important issue identified at this stage affecting the areas surrounding the river banks is fluctuation in flood level which is studied in detailed by studying the flood pattern up to last 50 years. Thus site is delineated according the flood level culminating in zoning the selected river stretch providing opportunity for the land improvement which get submerged into the flood waters. Proposal: Detail Design proposal is proposed on part plan selected on the basis of opportunity of human river connection that is declined due to above mentioned problems relating to the Vishwamitri River. So this proposal visualizes the importance of the seasonal river passing through in between city premise and how it can be celebrated in its natural state spreading awareness about the rich biodiversity present in the riparian zone. This thesis concentrates on spreading awareness about enjoying river in its natural state and understanding the ecosystem cycle and how it is important in regulating access flood water while appreciating the wild look of the river bank. The design proposal explains how this can be achieved without engineering river bank and destroying the natural vegetation which supports the life cycle of many species whose habitats are directly connected to the riparian zones of the river.

Major issues regarding Vishwamitri River catchment can be described in two parts 1) Increase in runoff and 2) Soil erosion, both of them are explained in detail as follows: Conclusion: After estimation of the five parameters of Universal Soil Loss Equation USLE for the each of the three sub watersheds, it is found that two sub watersheds coded as SW1 and SW2 are subjected to extremely serious states of disintegration and needs some watershed treatment to control the high rate of disintegration. Proposal: > Proposal 1: To establish vegetative cover on the barren places of the Mt. Pavagadh. > Proposal 2: To make certain scrub-lands/degraded forest lands wetlands to water during situations like flood. > Proposal 3: To make check dams on the places where river widens and dig them deeper to accommodate more water during flood like situation.

Study at City Level:

In order to study the river passing through urban fabric, a part area is selected for further study and analysis regarding pressure of increasing urbanism on river and its effect on city level. Comparing study of river before entering Vadodara district and within the city premise. Further analyzing and pointing out the issues and trying to find an policy level proposal for rejuvenation of the dying Vishwamitri River.

Issues: Degreadation of river quality is happeing in diverse ways which are segregated below and detailed out in order to approach a fisible solution. A) Pollution From Small Rural Villages B) Waste-waters and Pollutants from Unsewered Towns C) Industrial Pollutants from Cottage/Small Scale Industries D) Industrial Pollutants from Large Industries

Policies at Regional level: 1) Water treatment plants should be introduced to match the chemical pollution in river to nullify the hazardous effects of chemicals being released by the industries and small scale industries should be stopped if they are not bale to afford such treatment plants. 2) Number of STP should be increased as the existing STP’s are not sufficient.

07 Regional Landscape Study: Rishikesh, Utttarakhand. Masters Program in Landscape Architecture 2015 - 2017, Cept University.

Aim: To study in detail, understand and analyze the region of Rishikesh keeping the natural resources of the area as a primary priority. To look into issues associated with the region and attempting at addressing it with appropriate solutions. Objectives: • To study the natural resources in the region defined around the city of Rishikesh • To study and understand the landscape character of the region • To study and understand the culture and lifestyle of the people in the region • To identify critical areas in the region • To evaluate ecological values and strengthen the same for sustainable development of the region. Methodology: • The delineated study region was studied in terms of the natural layers that exist in it, the sociocultural and economic aspects of the region were documented. • The demography of the city of Rishikesh was studied and the existing activities were mapped. • Various literature studies of similar areas documented, were studied to analyze the region further • On the regional level a set of composite maps incorporating the data of two or more maps were made to define issues in the area. • Guidelines on the regional level were proposed based on the issues identified. • Guidelines for the city were proposed based on the issues identified.

The selected region is predominantly the flatter river basin of river song and its tributaries flanked by the motichur mountain range on south, southwest and the edge of steeply rising shiwalik range on the north and northeast. Inferences: Rishikesh city is placed in the Tehri-Garhwal region of Uttar Anchal The Rishikesh Weather remains pleasant throughout the year. Inferences: Slope is important because it influences hydrology, soil and its erosion and vegetation. Slope determines the kind of activity possible on the land and kind of measures required for conservation. Slope has been divided into categories for the purpose of analysis. Most of the slopes on hilly track are very steep ranging above 33%, which is also angle of repose of the soil. Slope above 33% would require soil conservation measures to prevent the soil erosion by water.

Inferences: > The region has an interesting habitat for fauna because of its location of Shiwalik ranges and the vast Indo-Gangetic plains. The Dehradun forest division region and The Rajaji Tiger Reserve has a large population of Asian Elephants and Leopards because of their ideal habitat and forest types. > Fauna diversity in the region:Spotted deer, barking deer, sambar, goral, wild pig, Asian elephant,Bengal tiger, Leopard, Jungle cat, jackal, Himalayan yellow throated martin, Sloth bear and many more reptiles are found in the park.

Inferences: > To study and comprehend the area for understanding the ground water recharge potential. Based on the overlay of various layers connected to ground water recharge,the following categories were identified in order to get the maximum potential areas.

Zone 1: Areas having poor Ground Water Recharge Potential. Evolution of gardens The history of gardens may be considered as aesthetic expressions of nature in more humane manner, a display of an expression of culture, and sometimes as private status. The enclosure of outdoor space began in 10,000 BC; historians imagine the first enclosure was a type of barrier for the purpose of keeping out animals. Egyptian tomb paintings of 16th century BC were evidences of ornamental horticulture and landscape design around important structure; they depict lotus ponds surrounded by symmetrical rows of acacias and palms. For example, Persian gardens ‘paradise garden’ and ‘hanging garden’ were world renowned examples. Monastery gardens of medieval period were designed for functional purpose; they harvested various herbs and medicinal plants. During Renaissance gardens become symbol of power and royalty, the scale garden ascended from the villas to the urban parks. These, all this variation in garden size and style are related to events happing in that era, science and art influenced many new landscape elements like fountains and sculptures. Thus gardens depict the current style of art, culture, about native flora and fauna and influence of science in that period. Vastrapur Lake in Ahmedabad, is a natural depression, which after urbanization transformed to park, on the periphery of lake concreting its edges and now it is located admits commercial hub. The park edge conditions vary according to immediate context and it caters to various users from all age groups at different time interval and different activities occurring around the park edge, which reveals the lifestyle and culture of people around.

> Vastrapur lake which contains a natural water depression which is degraded due to concreting edges and constructing planters on it. Therefore the important aspect after designing this proposal was rejuvenation of the lake and building human water connection positively. All the design process concludes to a master plan which attempts to resolve above mentioned issues relating to replenishing the degraded natural fabric avoiding use of most of the artifical materials. The master plan coherently articulates the imitation of natura landscape with mounds at periphary, balancing the heirarchy of the open space with surrounding building structures and also acting as buffer. The pathway manuvers through this landforms organizing a circulation of that like a meandering river. Toddler’s court is replaced by play scape like landforms which promotes the idea of old school playing in the wild which also subconsciously binds them with nature.

What is ravine...? The word ravine is used to define a deep gorge. it is a system of deep gullies running more of less parallel to each other in alluvial soil of great depth and draining into a major river or its tributary which is flowing lower than the surrounding table land. The ravines and their immediate areas on the river bank are untouched by human activities. Ravines are formed due to soil erosion caused by surface water run off. This process of erosion degrades the land next to the river bed by washing away the top soil. Process of formation of ravines...? •Rain drop strikes the ground with velocity, breaking down the granules of soil and reducing them to smaller particles. •Soil becomes saturated with water which starts moving dislodged soil particles in form of erosion. •Surface rain off happens in irregular flow according to slop and due to smaller irregularities on ground surface results in formation of rills. •The rills on further erosion gets transformed into gullies. •The gullies start increase in size and formation of network. •Surface run off travelling from interwoven gullies to lower level river bed and alluvial strata, result in formation of ravines. •Once the ravine is formed it grows by the phenomenon of saturation, broadening it’s head and sides. These ravines goes on increasing and starts invading the upper table land. •During high flood level the river backs up in ravines and further washes up the vertical sides.


09 •During rainfall concentrated surface run off water flows from head, rills along the gully and sides of ravines, increasing its size. •During dry spells fine soil particles are carried away by wind increasing erosion. Factors responsible for ravine formation...? •Due to biotic interference ground cover vegetation is removed adding in soil erosion. •As a result of rivers and tributaries flowing lower than surrounding table land. •Alluvial deposits on catchment area gets eroded due to scouring. •Extreme rainfall for short duration of time. •Extreme dryness of soil due to climate. Activities happening in ravines...? While walking towards river through ravine, there are exposed soil sections on either sides. The area is dominated by plant species like Prosopis julifera, Azadirachta indica. Various local fauna uses ravines as their access point to river due to sheer slope and also rests their due to comparatively less temperature due to depression. And also various birds do their nest holes for protection. At micro level many insects like butterflies and spider. There are also human trails and bullock cart marks in ravines with big width.

> This nuances of Sabarmati River helps to identify the type of activities observed at the site explaining about the current condition of the flood plain, raising a great threat to the natural source of water which also gets affected on ground water level affecting the natural ecological cycle and riparian zone. > Ravine formation is a gradual process, rainfall starts eroding soil with surface run-off which results in formation of rills. The process of erosion continues in the same way and the rills on further erosion gets transformed into gullies. This gullies after expanding culminates in network of rills. When the network of interwoven gullies is formed due to combination of low level rivers and alluvial strata it results n the formation of ravines.

> This ravine is connected to low level Sabarmati River which is doesn’t have a strong network connection of gullies, its still in its premature stage where the head is covered with Prosopis Julliforea. It is used by various animals and cattle herd and also it is a important habitat of many avifauna species.

> The longitudinal section of the ravine reveals all the concealed ecology buried under the layers of vegetation which consists of three levels of plantation that plays an important role in formation of ravine. This process starts with loosing of ground cover mostly by cattle grazing and vehicle tracks this phenomena embarks the initial stage of erosion which is unnoticeable, eventually by removal of shrubs and trees by humans for live stock, trails are formed amidst natural vegetation. This trial further widens and deepens due to erosion to start the ravine formation process through rills and gullies. Thus it can be observed from current scenario where tail of the ravine vanishes in between which is continued further by trail that culminates to the secondary road.

> Thus the conceptual idea revolves around a strategy enhancing the hierarchy of this natural feature, showcasing its ecological importance and spreading awareness among people. The design proposals involve vegetation management along the ravine stretch, land modulations providing opportunity for human interaction and limiting the area for cattle grazing ultimately seizing the illegal activities along the river bank making the space favorable for socialization educating people, how to embrace the rawness of this natural features without de spoliating them.

Symbol of strength: The Ox - is a sculpture depicting abstract form of Power, strength and persistence. In order to transform these words into a symbol, a through research was done. This process can be identified from past civilizations where Lion and Oxen were used as empire emblem to current modernistic car companies like jaguar conceiving inspiration from true form of nature. To accentuate the meaning of the words the hump is exaggerated and the posture also plays important role in imposing the meaning. In addition to that the left broken horn represents experience.

THIS IDEA IS TRANSFORMED INTO A GAME WHERE FOUR BALL SHOWS THEIR DIFFERENT MOVEMENT PATHS ALONG THE INTERLOCKING LINKAGES.

Process from start to end

Tokyo Replay Center is based on concept of interactive architecture where an individual gets connected with the building and can also alter functions, in this case it depends on gaming competition. Thus there are varied linkages and gaps between the structure. The project involves three main elements (Pods), Stability (Core supporting structure) and interlocking blocks. In order to show the movement and interlocking linkages the core structure is concealed showcasing the extract of the project. This idea is transformed into a game where four balls show their different movement paths along the interlocking linkages.

Taking this idea in new perspective and relating it on more global level and using it to highlight issues like deforestation, is also an art.
