FROM THE DESK

O

Kim Adamson

ne of the great things about this job is that I can visit interesting places, see great shows, and call it work! My visit to Los Angeles last month was perfect timing in so many ways. The weather has been cold and rainy in my part of Canada for most of the spring and summer. I was looking forward to getting warm again, and the weather in Los Angeles when I was there, was heavenly. Of course, traveling on a budget has its challenges. Since the trip was very last minute, I had to hop from one hotel to another during my week there. My favourite Bed & Breakfast was only available for my last 2 nights there. I even managed to publish July's issue from an internet cafe, clock ticking with a line up behind me! Good times! Airport security has gone insane, and this trip I was ushered to an alternate screening at LAX, a long walk, down stairs, a huge lineup, and suspicious airport personnel. I guess a red head carrying a heavy duffel with a Canadian passport is suspect on the July 4th long weekend in the US. My biggest fear was having my video camera broken or somehow rendered unusable, as that was my main reason for going to Hollywoodthe wonderful interview I got with our cover story this month- Evolove! I am so impressed with this band and these young folks. They are true professionals, keeping their word, arriving on time, and providing everything necessary to do this feature on them, as soon as asked. They were a delight to interview. This band is really going places. I finally got to meet our L.A. Photographer Greg Eident. He is such a professional, with great ideas, and energy!

It's always scary working with people that you haven't met, but after meeting Greg, I have every confidence in his integrity and abilities. We are so lucky to have found Greg. Another amazing meet up I had was with our wonderful magazine contributors from Norway and Sweden, Hilde Marie Grensbraten and Marie Bergstrom. These ladies had planned a trip to Los Angeles as part of their work for their charity AngelBatz.(http://www.angelbatz.org/) I made sure that my trip coincided with theirs so that we could meet. Truly incredible ladies, we felt like we had known each other for years. There are angels that walk on earth, and these ladies are two of them. Coincidentally, I was able to attend a photo shoot/ interview that they were doing for Rising. It was so much fun to sit back and watch them in action. Their trip itinerary was full but they still made time to do some magazine work, not surprising with this incredibly hard working duo. I spent the two days that I wasn't working letting Hollywood inspire and motivate me to find new and interesting ways to bring independent music to all of you! There are so many talented people there, I came home with a case full of CDs handed to me by rising artists. Many of them you will see in the upcoming issues of Rising Magazine! Thanks for reading and thanks for supporting independent music!!

To The Editors of Rising Magazine: Thank you for allowing me to contribute to your wonderful magazine. You asked me why I volunteer for Rising. I don’t have much free time, but I like contributing to your magazine because so many of the independent artists have such unrecognized talent. I like being part of helping them get some exposure and some credit for their work. I can empathize with how hard it must be to get noticed in a flooded marketplace like the music world, even when you have a real talent. And I like the fact I can contribute when I have even a small amount of available time. And you asked me if I’d change anything about the magazine? I like the fun vibrant format, the photographs, the interviews -- my only complaint is that it is too long for me to get through quickly, but I also love that it makes me take a breath and slow down for a second in this crazy world. Rising is a great magazine because it encourages me to listen to music I would never have found otherwise – international sounds! And different genres or sounds than I would normally buy! With the free downloads, I can listen first and then buy any that I love. And Rising does the research for me (with some help from me! ) Some of my favorite indies have already been featured in the magazine and I have found many new favorites via the previous issues. I love the creative photographs (talented photographers!) and the pictures with your motto “Support Indie Music”. I like the interviews for getting to know the person behind the music. Thank you for the work you are doing. I hope people will donate money via your donate button so you can keep it going. I am a big fan of music,

August 2011

especially indie music! And I love to discover new sounds, but I am lazy, or maybe just busy, and your magazine does the work for me. Thank you!

Sarah Wilson

Dear Rising Mag, I liked the interview with my favorite band My Cousin The Emperor !!!! They are super cool and just because they’re a country band doesn’t mean they’re not indie! The photos were awesome also!

Kay Mollett Dear Editors, I was pleasantly surprised to see our local singer, Aspen Switzer, featured in your magazine. We’re very proud of “our” Aspen, and are even more proud when she can showcase to a worldwide audience.

S. Russell Dear Rising Magazine; I especially liked your interview with “Fans of Jimmy Century”. I’m sure I’m not the only one that is grateful that they stick to small venues, it keeps the intimate feeling and we know they do it for the love of music, not for the love of money. Keep up the good work Rising!

Hot and Rising Barricades Rise

consists of Jonathan Coates and Michael McEntee.

The acoustic duo from the Midlands have been playing together for over 15 years in several indie bands. In 2007 they dropped the electric guitars and hit the acoustic scene, hard. From the off they garnered extremely positive reviews regarding their sweat inducing stage shows, thrashing the stage and putting every ounce of energy they could into a gig, being compared to Mumford & Sons and Turin Brakes along the way. Now with the release of their second album 'All I Have Is Here' and on a UK tour, plus support to Roddy Woomble of Idlewild and playing on the main stage at the Godiva Festival alongside Gabrille Cilmi, the boys of Barricades Rise feel it is their time to be noticed. http://www.barricadesrise.co.uk

Novae

Digging into the musical influences of singer/keyboardist/songwriter Rich Genoval and guitarist/songwriter Mark Scandariato, the driving forces behind emerging New Jersey based Pop band Novae, one finds a unique musical convergence. Growing up in Newark, Novae frontman Rich Genoval loved the classic sounds of Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder and Al Green as much as the harmonic sounds of BoyzIIMen, and the pop/rock frontman energy of Guns N’ Roses’ Axl Rose. After scoring several domestic accomplishments, including singing the national anthem at MSG and Prudential Center sporting events, Genoval began searching for an extra edge to add to his material. He suddenly found himself acquainted with Mark Scandariato via an online ad. Guitarist Mark Scandariato is a music business veteran. As a touring musician for indie and major label artists, Mark has collaborated with artists such as Bob Dylan, The Spin Doctors, Hootie & The Blowfish, among others. “Genoval’s style was really not typically what I would have normally gravitated to, but something about the soul in the vocals and material pulled me in." While recording their latest EP, NOVAE, ONE in Boston, MA, together with Anthony J Resta, they have created a sound that is both wholly original yet comfortably familiar. "We like to call it ‘poetic pop’” says Genoval. Rounding off rhythm section are bassist Jim Arra and drummer Kevin Hill. Novae has been gigging frequently at NYC hotspots such as The Bitter End and Webster Hall as well as at familiar NJ haunts such as the Starland Ballroom and The Stone Pony. http://www.novaemusic.com/ Hightstown, NJ 10pm Friday, July 15th, 2011 Princeton, NJ 10pm Saturday, July 16th, 2011

Hot and Rising TUNSI, born and raised on the East Coast (CT) is an artist who is bound to conquer radio waves nationwide.

His music blends many types of unpredictable styles and delivers raw lyrical talent over strong beats. TUNSI grew up with the hip-hop scene - break dancing and spinning records in the early 80's. Those hip-hop influences soon inspired him to cultivate his own musical talents that will propel into the next millennium. He combines his hip-hop roots with a complex, yet contemporary style. TUNSI delivers his raps with a unique style that can be defined as "underground wisdom." He performs with a passion and energy that motivates crowds and reaches his audience not only through his music, but also through his everyday life confrontations that find expression in his lyrics. Armed with ambition and determination, TUNSI will make an impact in the rap industry. He intends not only to perform as a recording artist in his own right, but also to achieve success in other aspects of the music industry as well. He has composed and copyrighted numerous songs 14 of which are on Behold A King, 25 on The Omen, 17 on The Antidote, and plenty more. All being written and produced by TUNSI himself. TUNSI is destined to succeed as a multitalented lyrical genius. http://www.paranarecords.net/

T-Dawn singer/ songwriter/ musician Growing up T-Dawn has always had her hands deep into music. Her parents would feed her ambitions with guitars, drums, horns, and anything that she requested. Not until several years later, had she found herself alone in a church sanctuary, feeling the urge to play the grand piano she had been eyeing on stage. As soon as her fingers touched the keys she was astonished by the hidden talent that she had discovered. She had finally found the instrument that spoke to her, that could make her feel the music through her bones. As many years passed on her passion grew into many instrumental songs. It was not until the devastating passing of her father that she would branch out into a new found world of music for her, creating her first vocal appearance in her original song “Mental Breakdown”. From then on she has become motivated by many fans, ”Starlights”, and appearances at venues such as Caesar’s palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. Also working with many artists and affiliates such as Owen Critchley who has worked with the Black Eyed Peas. You can now find T-Dawn widely spread throughout the internet world with her sexy soulful voice, backed by hypnotic, enchanting, ethereal music and musical influences such as Stevie Nicks, Tori Amos, Annie Lennox, Imogen Heap, Cheryl Crow, Ani DiFranco, Sarah McLachlan, Janis Joplin, Nine Inch Nails, Fiona Apple, Alanis Morissette. http://www.tdawn.com/

Hot and Rising Lick And A Promise Since 2006 Lick And A Promise have developed such an accomplished sound that you could easily mistake them for old school rock stalwarts. Even after struggling through differences with producers, founder members Manuel Elsesser (g) and Jochen W. Thoma (voc) miraculously managed to bring a band together which is just so special. They took the bull by the horns and recruited a local drummer and bass player, the group was completed right on time for the recording sessions back in early 2006. Since then a debut album was released. More recently a few extra members were drawn in to complete the latest release "Come Together In The Morning". This just has to be heard to be believed, its quality is second to none. Lick And A Promise have seeded a pedigree and laid a benchmark for the future of Classic Rock. Nick Gilles

Monty

the SpacePoet is a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist hailing from the rolling green hills and blue skies of Port Providence, Pennsylvania. His ability to intertwine his roaring guitar licks, powerful drumming, complex lyrics, and rough-but-ready singing have lead him to create an acoustic-punk-rock hybrid of music that is truly original and his own unique brand of rock music. His gentler side can be heard on the 2006 EP "Acoustic Resurrection" - featuring the fan favorite "Butterflies In Heaven" while his more raucous side is evident on the 2009 EP "Rock Stars Don't Eat Cookies," featuring another fan favorite "UFO." Presently, Monty is writing new songs and recording his next EP, tentatively titled "The Lion." Crossover rock-n-roll? Acoustic rock with a poetic twist? You decide...

Brian Eaton For nearly two decades, Brian Eaton has been producing and recording artists in and around Chicago. Now he has just released his new solo rock/pop 11track LP, Graphic Nature, featuring Seal’s mega-hit “Crazy.” The album has a progressive sound reminiscent of Peter Gabriel blended with the Industrial tones of Nine Inch Nails and Linkin Park, the psychedelic feel of Pink Floyd and the harmonies of Alice In Chains. As a true solo artist, Eaton wrote, performed and recorded all the instruments and vocals on his new release of which several tracks have received significant airplay. Tim Lamping of 105.5FM The Kat stated, “Brian Eaton is a versatile one-man show. The production, vocals and guitar soloing are spectacular.” Fans can download the title track for FREE @ www.facebook.com/BrianEatonMusic

"Your band is your business, and as every entrepreneur knows, your business is your life. "Rising To The Top" will be our newest feature, with hints, tips, do's and don'ts of the music industry. If you're just starting out, or have years of experience, these monthly articles will help you rise to the top!

Effectively Promoting Your Music Online by Sherry Brown If you’re just starting out, or have been in the business awhile, you know how important it is to get your name out there. Online promotion can be overwhelming, and many bands often focus on the wrong areas, which is a waste of time. It’s important to carefully plan your strategy to promote your band to the proper people. Here are some very basic tips to get you started, or to keep you focused on your quest for online music promotion. Develop a Press Kit Your press kit should be short and sweet, booking agents and music journalists get a lot of these. A quick listen, if they like what they hear, then they MAY read your written material. Don’t write more than one page and make sure to include your website, or blog. Have different formats for different announcements i.e., tour dates, song releases. Templates for press releases can be found for free online.

30

Online Media Develop a list of blogs, websites and online magazines, take an afternoon and find the sites that will mesh with your band. This database takes some time, as you want your music to reach the right demographic. Research, research and research! Once you have your database, you can start sending out your press releases, band bios or other sales pitch. One way to build up your database list is to offer a song or CD for an e-mail, or use the “pay with a tweet”, everyone loves getting something for nothing, and you get to build up your client list. A blog for your band is easy, and free to make, this will give you an online presence, and your very own platform. Find the time to keep it up to date, otherwise you’re just wasting your time. Fan interaction Facebook, Google +, Twitter, the social media platforms are almost endless. Make sure you choose the proper social media;

do you really need a MySpace page? Will Facebook still be a valid platform in a year, or will Google + take over? Consider your fan base before you consider your media. Give your fans exclusive information, like when you’re writing new songs, recording or your thoughts on your last gig. Ask them what they think about your band, how you can improve, or what they like most about your last gig. Make them feel important, and indeed they are! Fans want a genuine connection with the artist, to feel that they are a part of the process. Remember everything done online is done globally, so be aware of cultural differences, and keep it relevant. Your band is a business, and you’re in a very competitive industry. Take some time now to establish a solid base so you don’t fall apart later. Building your name takes time, it won’t happen overnight, know where you want to be and how you’re going to get there is half the battle.

Rising: Can you all introduce yourselves? Tell us what you all like about each other. SUH: I'm Mixi the singer, Mikey guitar, Nikki guitar, Andrew drums, and Charlee bass and we don't like much about each other! <x3 Rising: You've all brought a lot of music cred to this new project. Can you tell us what led each band member together at this point in time and a run down of all of your previous work? SUH: We have all been in projects, some have toured, been signed to a major etc... but have never had a project take off as fast and ferocious as this one. Having previous experience of knowing the business a little helps us get further with this project independently without relying on anyone else. Rising: Did you know each other prior to forming the band?

August 2011

The writing process goes really fast. It just pours out of us and we don't try to change the raw initial gut instinct often.

SUH: As big as Hollywood seems it's actually a small town. Everyone knows everybody somehow. All of us had mutual friends or were friends already and when the idea for this band came to play the members fell in place.

33

Rising: Can you explain how you came up with the name for the band? SUH: Mixi is the only one who knows the true meaning of the name and isn't ready to discuss that yet. We will leave that up to the viewer for now! ^_~ R i s i n g : Yo u s t a r t e d recording together within one week of forming. Who wrote/writes material for the band or is it a collaboration? SUH: Mikey had jammed out some tunes with Andrew so there was a structure. Then Mixi and Mikey got together and Mixi wrote the lyrics to "We're Alive" and "Hell" over a recording device on cell phone to get a rough idea. The next week we were in the studio! The writing process goes really fast. It just pours out of us and we don't try to change the raw initial gut instinct often. Rising: You are releasing an EP soon. Can you talk about it? What is on it, who wrote it, and who produced it? SUH: We just finished the 6-song EP. It's not going to be placed for online distribution yet. We decided to only sell the hard copies live. So they will be very limited. We were lucky to get Mike S a r k i s y a n , To m m y Decker, and Jeff Hannan to work on all the tracks

at Mid City Sound. With all the other producer offers on the table we are sticking with them being that it's such a good vibe and we know we will love the finished product. Rising: You are touring this summer. Can you tell us who you are touring with and where the shows will be? What can we expect at your shows? SUH: The first month August we are going on the road with Evolove then Gemini Syndrome will be hopping on too for the second month in September. Just expect to be covered in glitter, tattoos, and evil grins by the end of the show!

Rising: You just formed the band last October, and you have a great fan base already. What do you think has contributed to this success? Any advice for other new bands out there? SUH: To answer this question completely it would take up the whole magazine!! There is a LOT of work that goes into it! Luckily every member is extremely dedicated so we get 5 times the man power than if it was just one person in the band doing all the work. Ask questions, read, learn and you'll find your way just stick to it and NEVER give up.
