Howie’s Kick-Off Shiny Head Productions presents “Howie’s Kick Off”: The Annual Howard Kehl Rock Music Development Award Benefit at The Gov on Sunday September 11th, from 1pm to 4.30pm, which is celebrating the life and music of Adelaide musician, songwriter and mentor Howard Kehl. In conjunction with the Songwriters Composers and Lyricists Association [SCALA], Adelaide musicians unite to create an annual development award in the genre of Rock Music as part of the SCALA Festival Of Original Music Song Competition while paying tribute to Adelaide songwriter, drummer and music mentor Howard Kehl. ARIA Award Winner Howard Kehl, who has received a number of SCALA FOOM song writing awards, is best known for his work with a large number of musical outfits including Portrait [with Dino Jag and Vince Contarino], Poundcake, Almost Human, Glory Boys, Amberlist and most recently FastMotor. An integral part of the Australian Deep Purple Fan Club, Howard Kehl was heavily involved with Deep Purple management and behind the scenes work. He was the consummate fan that morphed over the years, developing a friendship with the team and putting together the Deep Purple Total Abandon: Australia ‘99 Melbourne Concert DVD together, which went on to receive the 2000 ARIA Award for Gold/ Platinum DVD Sales. In May 2015, Howard suddenly passed away at home, leaving a gap not only in the hearts of his family, friends and fellow musicians, but also in the support network he had harnessed for up-and-coming musicians in the local rock music scene. Wanting to celebrate his 30 years in the music industry as a drummer, writer, producer, director, consultant and musician, Shiny Heads Productions was formed. Consisting of 8

Shiny Heads Productions are presenting Howie’s Kick Off - The Annual Howard Kehl Rock Music Development Award Benefit, performing at The Gov from 1pm on Sunday September 11th. Howard Kehl was a lover of music and of the music community. His input over his thirty years of involvement pivotally changed the face of the South Australian music industry; his assistance in supporting and mentoring bands saw many great artists grow and move forward. All of the artists are volunteering


their time and talents to perform at Howie’s Kick Off and make this annual award possible. Shiny Heads Productions have teamed up with SCALA (Songwriters, Composers and Lyricists Association) to continue Howard’s mentorship legacy by creating the ‘Howard Kehl Rock Music Development Award’ as part of SCALA’s annual Festival Of Original Music Song Competition. The category will be SCALA’s only genrebased category - focused on the music that Howard loved - Rock Music. Really laugh… the kind of laughter that poured with tears!” What songs, if any, have you written together? “Sadly, none… although we almost recorded one of my songs together. But time ran out and we never got around to it.” What is your favourite Howard quote? “There are so many that just can’t go into print (ha ha) but ‘Practise 30 minutes a day – hone it then own it!’ was always a good one.”

When and how did you first meet Howard? “It was around 1992. We met at a Barmera Music Festival seminar at The Jolly Miller Hotel, hosted by the now late Rocky Page. We were the only ones there not flashing our egos around. I guess we were just drawn to each other and have been friends ever since.”

What does being a part of creating this Rock Music Development Award mean to you? “I love that we are a part of something that will keep Howard’s legacy as a songwriter, performer, consultant and mentor alive, all while keeping Howard’s memory beating in our hearts – and maybe in the hearts of those that never had the pleasure to know him.”

What songs, if any, have you written together? “We worked on a lot of songs together, but they weren’t really co-writes. Howard would often come to my place and already have a song mapped out in his head with all its various parts. So, my role back then was more about helping him to translate those ideas into physical form… work through the arrangement with him and then recording a demo onto my Tascam 4-track cassette recorder. We had a lot of fun experimenting with different recording techniques. In many ways that was my introduction to ‘producing’ music.” What is your favourite Howard quote? “I can’t remember any exact quotes right now… I just know that he usually had me laughing within the first 30 seconds of any conversation with him.” What does being a part of creating this Rock Music Development Award mean to you? “Howard was a great supporter of others, so this is a great way to honour that support and inspire more of the same.”

When and how did you first meet Howard? “I first met Howard at a band audition when I was about 16 years old. We were both auditioning for a rock band that was being put together to enter the Findon Hotel Battle Of The Bands!” What bands have you performed in with Howard? “We performed together in the first version of

Howie would be really proud of this. Importantly he would be 100% focussed on identifying and mentoring emerging local rock talent.” What do you think will be some of the biggest benefits to come from the creation of this SCALA Award? “The main benefit I hope will be recognition of an emerging Adelaide rock musician or band. It would be great if the mainstream media gave it some airplay also.” What one trait of Howard’s would you like to put in your DNA? “His luxuriant Fabio-like hair?”

When and how did you first meet Howard? “I met Howie back in the early 1980s when he was doing local crew stuff for Almost Human, The Dukes and Mickey Finn.”

If Howard was here now, what would you most want to say to him? “Ooooh… what about those puppies?”

What bands have you performed in with Howard? “The Mutant Love Yabbies, No Time Wasters, Poundcake and many other ‘party rock’ cover bands.” How would you best describe Howard? “He was complex. He was very funny, humble, quick witted, a great mentor and motivator.” What is your fondest memory of Howard? “I have loads, but his self-deprecating humour was absolute gold! He used to make my ribs hurt I’d be laughing so hard.” What songs, if any, have you written together? “We wrote many over the years. Two songs were recorded for my 2014 Album – FIVE O’ ONE NINE. It’s The Singer Not The Song and Rockin’ Rollin’ Man. Headliners for this inaugural event are The Beautiful Girls fronted by the amazing Mat McHugh who will bring their Ultra Vibrational Electric Light Beams to life on our arena’s main stage. The Island of Doctor Moron®, an unprecedented, independent Australian film, will be screened for one night only at The Published Arthouse in Adelaide on Saturday 17th September. The recent world premiere launch of the film at the prestigious Dendy Opera Quays in Sydney sold out two weeks in advance. There has never before been a cinematic film of a live, completely original Australian rock musical. The film is what Chris Dockrill, producer and co-creator of the film calls a ‘hybrid film’ of the live show of the same name which premiered in Sydney in November, 2014 at the specially created New Olympia Theatre on Oxford St, Paddington. “Moron”, as Dockrill refers to it, is a high energy rock musical which has had the on-going support and endorsement of Jack Thompson, one of Australian’s most famous actors. Thompson is on record as saying, “The Island of Doctor Moron is unlike any musical I have seen. It’s fresh, it’s novel and it’s exciting. The producers of this film have captured the raw energy of the live show brilliantly. It’s pure magic. Do yourselves a favour and see it at least once.” The story is driven by 21 original songs each of which stand alone as catchy pieces ranging from hard-driving rock such as “Doctor’s Orders” through to very cool jazz as in “Jungle Fever”. All of the songs were written by Dockrill and his wife, Lyn, who composed the music for the entire show. LIVE SOUND ADVICE

By Frank Lang Recently I neglected to request/insist on a list of requirements - requests for a mixing gig. Not basic mic requirements, I’ve got that sussed, but special requirements beyond a basic set up, and this proved to be a mistake. My fault entirely as I assumed the band wanted a mix, like, in a front bar of an Adelaide pub mix, not an extravaganza. Here’s the story.

Two days before the gig things began to unravel, the drummer called me up to request two bass drums mic’s, the same brand and make. I mentioned a musician from the 70’s and mentioned he used to tune two separate notes, one on each kick drum. Ooh!!!! bad mistake.

OK so why didn’t you tell me all this two days ago? The guy looks at me surprised. All these requests just half an hour before kick off! And oh, did I mention the support act? Extra work for the sound person.

On the night, the singer approaches me for an extra channel for the mic stand with the acoustic guitar fitting/holder. Apparently this more contemporary drummer uses two kick mic’s to make the same sound/ note on each drum, well O.K. “Why must they be the same brand?” I ask, “so that they sound the same,” came the reply, I’m a little confused, but well, I can do that quite easily with a little EQ. Even with different mic’s, the drummer is not convinced, but we leave it at that.

Now how many of these leads, mics, stands and extras is this band supplying? None? Did the band expect me to have all these extra thingamajigs, and, did they consider that having their own leads and knickknacks and thingamajigs might reduce the risk of having to forego playing the song coz they couldn’t get it into the desk (wrong plugs etc)?

By Allen Tiller For this month’s MEGAscene I wanted to focus on something different. Recently I have seen for sale in Adelaide a number of the old allegedly cursed “Haunting Boy” paintings, so I thought why not write about that, and get to the bottom of the legend!?

One lady even speculated that the painting may have been the cause for her husband and three sons dying over a span of a few years. Cape Jervis to Goolwa on the southern most stretch of the coast also has the now the small city of Victor Harbour, these places not so long ago were just well kept secrets, how things change.

We actually built it for the southerners. Most of the stuff around is aimed at tourists, and the prices really do reflect that. A lot of people like us can’t afford to go out each week, I wanted somewhere people could just come out to have a drink or a meal, and it be affordable for them. So you can come out every weekend. Otherwise you’re just working and paying taxes then dying. We’re here for a good time not a long time. It reduces the inflammation of the airways caused by asthma. The Preventer also helps to lessen the sensitivity of the airways, as well as mucus production. By using a Preventer, it enables normal functioning of one’s lungs.

Some people are prescribed a Blue or Brown inhaler or other coloured inhalers. A Blue inhaler is to be kept with you at all times, and taken twice a day morning and night. A Brown inhaler is to used to help manage symptoms and helps prevent further asthma


attacks. This brown inhaler is not a rescue medicine. Brown inhalers are to be used both morning and night.

Always remember the Blue inhaler is used for immediate relief while the Brown inhaler and other coloured inhalers are used to reduce the symptoms and prevent future attacks. ASTHMA FIRST AID 1. Sit the person upright. Be calm and reassuring. Do not leave them alone. 2. Give four (4) separate puffs of blue/grey reliever puffer. Shake Puffer Put one (1) puff into spacer Take 4 breaths from spacer Repeat until four (4) puffs have been taken Remember:- Shake the medicine, one (1) Puff, four (4) Breaths. 3. Wait four (4) minutes If there is no improvement give four (4) more separate puffs of blue/grey reliever as above. 4. If there is still no improvement, Call Emergency (000). In closing, just wanted to say is that there is no known cure for asthma but all of us can help by keeping our Asthma First Aid up to date!!
