This course challenges students to use planning requirements to create universal and accessible designs. Construction, electrical, and basic plumbing are taught with emphasis on the application within residential kitchens and baths.
Industry relevant nomenclature and product information are used to create technical documents and custom aesthetic solutions. The project requires for the use of 400 s.f. with budget limitations that include construction costs and appliances.

This modern kitchen fulfills the client’s requests of an open floor plan, maximum storage space, additional working surface and efficient lighting. Modern cabinets were carefully selected to maintain the modern look of the home. The white cabinets combined with dark quartz countertop will provide a high contrast feel to the space. The stainless steel appliances not only complement the modern elements of the kitchen design, but also provide economic efficiency.

The layout corresponds to the NKBA kitchen planning guidelines maximizing the functionality of the space. The kitchen is designed around the work triangle guideline with special consideration to the proper placement of the refrigerator, stove and sink. The work triangle guideline states that work centers should not be less than 4’ and no more than 9’ apart from each other with no barriers between them.

This modern bathroom allows for the efficient yet creative use of space. The floor plan is separated into three private areas: the vanity area, water closet and bath area. The fixtures within all areas of the bathroom are carefully placed for ADA accessibility, and the bathroom space allows for multiple ADA 60’’ turnarounds. The monochromatic colors and contemporary wood grain textured tiles help convey the clean and spacious look.
MODERN BATHROOM ID275 KITCHEN+BATH DESIGN The main goal of the team project with Adam Stanchiu was to space plan a luxurious bathroom that provides functionality to a couple in their late forties coming upon retirement.

This studio course explores various types of residential dwellings as they relate to different inhabitants. Project work applies the programming and design development phases of the residential design process to include information gatherings, needs analysis, concept and spatial development, and FF&E selections based on research and sustainability.
ANDERSON RESIDENCE ID306 RESIDENTIAL ENVIRONMENTS
A study model is built to 1/8”=1’-0” scale. It shows exterior walls, roofs, windows, doors decks and porches. The roof is removable to be able to see the interior. The interior walls will be replaced with the walls and openings of the finished design. The materials used for the construction of the model include balsa wood, bass wood, foam board and heavy weight vellum. The study model is used as a tool for three-dimensional understanding of the space.
The Anderson Residence combines modern and comfort elements to create a space that fulfills each family member’s needs. The private and public spaces are clearly defined, but the floor plan still remains open and spacious. The kitchen, dinning room and family room serve as the main public space where family members spend quality time. These rooms are large, open, integrated and are filled with natural light. The combination of wood, fabric textures and neutral colors throughout the space contribute to the comfortable and relaxing atmosphere.
ak lifestyle ID401 INTERNSHIP Internship is a monitored program for senior-level students to work part-time within the interior design industry. Field experience is an opportunity for students to apply and advance their knowledge, skills, and professionalism under the supervision of a qualified mentor. AK LIFESTYLE is a full-service, high end Interior Design firm for residential interiors that specializes in designing Bachelor Pads, Ultimate Dream Homes and Vacation Homes coast to coast.
SURPRISE MAKEOVER
It was a truly enriching experience to be able to work with Aleksandra Karach, a founder of AK LIFESTYLE, to observe her design process, to participate in the clients’ meetings and, finally, to be involved in the surprise makeover project, that included furniture selection, accessories and window treatments selection, as well as a full installation. Shown here is a complete family room.
RENEE’S RAW FOODS ID414 INTERIOR DETAILING & SYSTEMS The senior level studio is a study of the materials and fabrication techniques used in the design and construction of interiors and how these details are communicated three-dimensionally and in construction documents. Content includes interior construction detailing of ceilings, walls, flooring, and millwork. Project solutions will consider the integration of building technology such as mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and other relevant systems.

NOTES: The RCP (Reflected Ceiling Plan) Is used to point out the placement of sprinkler heads, lighting, switches, exit signage and emergency lighting. Found in the plan is code compliant exit signage and sprinkler head spacing. The exit signage is visible from any location and shows the direction of travel to reach the nearest exit. The sprinkler heads are spaced at a maximum distance of 15’ to allow proper coverage in case of fire.

This senior level studio course covers the physical and psychological factors that impact hospitality environments. Students are expected to graphically demonstrate original and viable solutions. Research on human factors, codes, and lighting are combined with product mix and multi-sensory aspects of design to influence perceived value to the customer.
SCHEMATIC DESIGN:
SHAPED LIKE A HIGH HEEL BOOT
A high heel shoe is an abstract object that is incorporated into the design of the fairy tale themed restaurant. A high heel shoe not only symbolizes the presence of fashion design in Italy, but also, reflects the country’s geography. People all over the world recognize and distinguish that the outline of Italy on the map mirrors the shape of a high heel shoe.
INSPIRATION: In addition, a high heel shoe ties well into a fairy tale theme within the boutique hotel Maison Moschino in Milan that features rooms with their own distinctive fairy stories. The proposed restaurant will be located in the lobby of the hotel. The use of high heel shoe will mirror the Cinderella fairy tale.
Tea Petrovic has designed a collection of shoes that is centered around the idea that each shoe is an architectural form and element.

SPACE PLANNING IDEAS:
A SHOE IN A BOX
The shape of two high heel shoes placed opposite of one another at an angle, as one would place them in a shoe box, will serve as another shape that will be used as the basis of the shape of restaurant.

Design concept considerations: Flexibility in the dining space. The restaurant concept offers a variety of space types, including lounge area, bar area and main dining room. Acoustic considerations. Food preparation area is placed in the back of the house and separated from the main dining area. Clearance considerations. Diagonal seating are spaced 36” between the corners of tables; 44” clearance is considered in hard aisles; 60” clear floor space is provided in all major traffic paths for wheel chair access and easy turns.

ID340 COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN III Students successfully completing this course will be able to use Computer-Aided Design software to assist them in their threedimensional project development. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the integration of computer technology into the design process and an introduction to BIM technology.
The nightclub project is centered around an existing building located in a trendy Chicago neighborhood, populated with bars, restaurants and music venues. The design is to be developed with a strong concept. Every aspect of the proposal should comply with the building codes and ADA regulations.

The project AGAPE Nightclub took the first place at the student design competition held by the American Society of Interior Design (ASID) in Chicago. The students were asked to submit a Commercial or Hospitality Interior Design project that they had done for a class. The project AGAPE Nightclub was completed for the CAD III class taught by Roberto Lama, Associate Professor of Interior Design and Program Coordinator for the School of Design. The award ceremony took place at the ASID Illinois headquarters located in the 14th floor of the Merchandise Mart building in Chicago on March 26th, 2015.
The design concept is to create a unique space that will provide energy and enjoyable nightclub experience. This club will have a contemporary look with dynamic upscale decor, finishes and color scheme as well as modern lighting and innovative digital screens around the space. It will feature high ceiling and illuminated columns which will be designed for the dancers and will serve as a focal point visually connecting first floor and mezzanine level.

STUDIO CREATIFF ID422 SENIOR STUDIO II
In this senior-level studio course, students use critical thinking skills through research, writing, discussion, and problem solving. Emphasis is on the identification of a design problem that could be better met through more responsive design. Students then develop a viable and visual solution for the project. Solutions incorporate environmentally sound, cost effective, and responsible design methods to influence an audience using creative delivery methods.

concept statement Studio “Creatiff” is an education center that will be located in the heart of Chicago, Illinois. It will provide high quality learning opportunities beyond the classrooms. Among many programs, “Creatiff” will offer a wide range of after school programs and summer activities such as: performing arts, visual arts, computer science and physical education. The main focus of the project is to develop a bright, inspiring, healthy and creative environment for children. The 26,000-square-foot studio will feature different student amenities and support areas such as: an auditorium, multipurpose gym, student lounge, computer labs, as well as classes for drama, dance and music performances.

The newly designed studio will become an urban, modern space through the creative use of architectural elements, lighting, art, graphics and innovative furniture. Sound isolation and thoughtful space planning will help accommodate dense activities and programs that require sufficiently quiet workspaces. A neutral color scheme will be created through the sensible use of warm colors. The combination of reds, yellows, and oranges will create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Further, a variety of textures and patterns will be mixed within the space in order to provide harmony.

In order to design an Eco-friendly environment for student and faculty, all materials and finishes will be carefully selected and incorporated into the design. Paints, sealants, flooring and agrifiber products should pass standards regarding VOC’s and off-gassing compounds that would negatively affect the indoor environment.
In order to reduce energy consumption, electric lighting controls will be integrated in the building system. Dimming controls will continuously adjust electric lighting to complement the illumination level provided by daylight. Motion sensors will respond to movement and automatically turn off or dim down luminaries when rooms are left unoccupied. The automated shading systems will help block direct sunlight, while allowing usable daylight into the spaces.
