1 Personal Statement “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. - Aesop

Rita Saikali Carter, AIA Principal, Higher Education Studio Little Diversified Architectural Consulting, Inc (Little)

Age 38 DOB: 4.22.1979 Newport Beach, CA

Dear BD+C Magazine, 40 under 40 Selection Committee, I believe I should be named a “40 under 40 Superstar” for the following reasons: • Immigrant of war instilled a sense of persistence for personal and professional growth, while giving back to those in need. • Community and professional stewardship through multiple leadership roles, advisory board service, and mentorship. • Rapid career advancement from ‘CAD monkey’, to managing director, to studio principal, while building strong relationships. • Belief that success begins with self-care and well-being. My husband jokes that I’m always on the move – always having some initiative to facilitate, some ‘stranger’ to call, event to attend or presentation to deliver after normal business hours. I think he lumps in my past hustle with the present. I’ve only lead 6 organizations, started 10 initiatives, mentored 403 students, and managed over 78 volunteers throughout of my 13-year career, while holding full-time jobs. Today I have taken his advice to slow down and focus on my current leadership role with Little, in balance with self-care and family, as I prepare for our first child. I attribute my need to always be on the move to my life’s journey. My family is an immigrant of war, moving from Lebanon to Toronto in the late 80’s, then to Los Angeles in the late 90’s. Entering new cultures was not easy for a 9 and 19-year-old tasked with helping care for her four siblings as the family assimilated over and over, starting from scratch every time. I was so moved by the relentless acts of human kindness we experienced along the way that I became determined to grow personally and professionally so I can pay it forward to those in need. As a global citizen, I believe in leaving the world a better place through the power of human-centered and resilient design, with a little bit of fun and a whole lot of social impact. As an architect and humanitarian, I combine my love for design with my passion for global connections, community service, mentorship and team building. ~ Community and professional stewardship have always been at the heart of my education and career. During my undergrad years, I served as the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) Chapter Publicist, followed by Chapter President. During that time, I tripled the chapter membership and refueled the culture by creating events such as the “Friday Open Mic”. While completing my thesis, I was elected as the Tao Sigma Delta (TSD) Honor Society Chapter President, where I led quarterly workshops to connect student members with professionals. I was nominated class representative during my graduate year, where I held monthly meetings with the Dean to ensure my constituents’ concerns were addressed so we all had an impactful experience. Graduating at the beginning of the recession in 2008, I was fortunate to land a job in New York City. This troubled time exposed me to negative management skills and low employee morale, fueling my passion to Rita Saikali Carter, AIA BD+C Magazine | 40 Under 40 Submission, 2018

grow my leadership capabilities so that colleagues, delegates, superiors or the communities I serve feel valued and respected. When work opportunities did not present fulfilling roles, I took it upon myself to find them. I began volunteering with the Architecture for Humanity (AFH) New York Chapter. When elected Director of Outreach & Advocacy in 2009, I raised the organization’s profile through extensive advocacy of the organization’s mission. I founded and managed the “Design DEYS” educational workshop series which impacted 200 young adults, led the FlyNY 2010 event impacting the lives of 4,000 New Yorkers, and managed the fundraising design package for the East Harlem Tutorial Program. In 2012 I took on the role of Managing Director for the struggling AFH Los Angeles Chapter, where I led the growth of our network and facilitated the “Architect is in” booth at Dwell on Design. This position connected me with the AIA Pasadena & Foothill chapter where I created a joint initiative focusing on Disaster Preparedness & Resiliency (DPR) with the support of the Director of Citizen Architect. Supporting my local Lebanese community through the Lebanese Collegiate Network (LCN), I am a board advisor and student mentor, and have assisted with communications outreach to garner community awareness. I serve as an advisor for the Women in Design + Construction (WiD+C) conference, and am the Communications Chair for the Society for University and College Planners (SCUP) 2018 Pacific Regional Conference. ~ I’ve consistently sought opportunities throughout my career that advanced me from being a “CAD monkey” while in Community College, to helping design a 37.6 Acre College Master Plan, to leading the design of a 112,000 square foot Student Housing & Dining project. My passion for the academic clientele aligns with my care for student life and experience, and I take pride in the trusting relationships I’ve developed with my clients and their stakeholders. My goal when joining Little as a Senior Designer in our Newport Beach office was to do meaningful work while achieving the holy grail of a live-work balance. In six short months the opportunity for the principal role in the Higher Education Studio presented itself. I found myself at a cross roads; this was an opportunity of a lifetime, yet I was 2 months pregnant. The patterns of my life persisted, so I interviewed for the position and was selected in October 2017. Since then – in six months – I have secured $786,000 in new work, saved 3 client relationships and generated 12 new client and contractor relationships while managing a team of 8 people, 11 existing clients, 18 active projects, $4.6M in architectural fees, with an average of 12% in profits. I have never felt more fulfilled in my career, as all the hard work in developing myself as a leader surfaced. ~ Because of my belief that happy and healthy individuals are at the core of personal and professional success, I now dedicate time to personal wellbeing through off-the clock activities such as reading, yoga, meditation, hiking and spending quality time with family. I encourage everyone to take care of themselves first, so they can bring their best selves forward to their team, projects and communities they serve. I hope my journey has painted a picture of who I am, what I believe in and how I will continue to make the world a better place through meaningful projects, community service, mentorship and team development. I would be honored to be recognized as a 2018, 40 Under 40 recipient. Thank you for your consideration. Rita Saikali Carter, AIA BD+C Magazine | 40 Under 40 Submission, 2018

Testimonial for Rita S. Carter I write this letter in strong support of Rita S. Carter who has been nominated for the BD+C 40 under 40 competition. Career development When we were seeking a new Principal in 2017 for Higher Education in our Southern California office we were looking for someone committed to and connected with the Higher Education Community in California. Typically, in the profession, these positions are filled by senior, seasoned architects with decades of experience, but we knew with Rita we had someone special who was not only knowledgeable and incredibly hard working, but energetic, forward-looking, offering fresh and new ways of doing things with a commitment to excellence. Everyone (clients and staff) who had worked with Rita in the past had great things to say about her, from her design acumen, people and management skills, to her commitment to her clients. We knew we had someone special and know we have made the right decision in hiring her to lead our firm in Higher Education work in Southern California. She is managing existing clients well, and has recently won work at MiraCosta College and other college work through careful and passionate commitment to their causes. Several colleges who have worked with Rita in the past (when she was with another firm) have reached out to her and asked her to submit on work on their respective campuses. This is almost unprecedented, and speaks volumes to her work and character. Education attainment Rita’s education credentials also speak to her intelligence and talents. When seeking work at Higher Education Institutions, it helps that Rita has degrees from both Cal Poly and Columbia Universities. While attending both Universities, not only was Rita an excellent student, she was actively involved in organizations (AIAS) demonstrating her commitment to causes beyond the classroom and studios. This too resonated with us, as it is critical to be engaged with the communities we serve. It is not enough to just be a good architect in the office. Service to professional organizations Rita has continued to serve professional organizations since entering the profession and she has presented at conferences. She is the 2018 SCUP Pacific Region Communications Chair. She also presented at the Women in Design and Construction Conference in 2018, and remains active as an advisor. This commitment is also highly valued by Little as it demonstrates a belief in our profession, helping us grow and improve. Community service Community service and volunteerism has always been part of Rita’s commitment to the profession and humanity. She believes in empowering people and helping them in as many ways as possible. Sometimes that is done by serving as a volunteer at local design programs, or serving as a Social Media Manager for the Lebanese Collegiate Network in Los Angeles. Her role with Architecture for Humanity in the past undoubtedly continues to play a large role in how she tries to solve problems. Her exposure to the larger context of the challenges in the world, provides a frame of reference for her. It puts things in context. She is constantly seeking the best ways to use design to help solve problems in thoughtful ways, with humans always at the center.

Other evidence of exemplary professional or personal development. Rita also understands the importance of storytelling so she enrolled in an IDEO-U Storytelling Conference, receiving a certificate for her participation. Storytelling is at the heart of what we do and her participation will help us tell our stories better. Rita also understands the importance of Wellness in our environments and she is preparing to become a Well Accredited Professional in the near future. Rita also cares deeply for her staff and meets with them regularly finding ways for them to thrive and grow. Her reputation is so strong that within months of us promoting her, two other individuals applied to our firm to join us due to her leadership. They were hired and they too are now helping us become even better. We are fortunate to have Rita as our Higher Education Principal. It is due to her leadership, intelligence, passion and commitment that we grow in confidence as we look to the future. Sincerely, Little Diversified Architectural Consulting

To Whom It May Concern, I’ve had the pleasure of working with Rita Carter on the design of a new project at the University of La Verne. Even in the design phase, the project had many challenges that including limited space, a tight timeline, multiple constituents, and budget considerations. We were able to successfully maneuver those challenges and are now in the construction phase of the project. In working through those challenges, Ms. Carter earned my trust and respect. In summary, I found Ms. Carter to be: • • • •

Professional, organized and timeline focused. Student centered. Approachable, honest and relatable. Creative but also focused on the needs of the constituents

Simply put, I appreciated being able to work with Ms. Carter and the work Ms. Carter did for us. I believe she is a talented individual that understands the higher education market. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at jregalado@laverne.edu or 909-4484448.

Bob Lavey

AIA, LEED AP Vice President, Regional Managing Principal, Buildings + Places at AECOM (former Partner at Steinberg)

“ To whom it may concern; It is my pleasure to provide a personal testimonial supporting the nomination of Rita Carter to 40 under 40. As a past recipient of the award, I have a clear understanding of the performance and quality of our peers that are considered for this honor. Rita has been with Steinberg since 2014, and quickly exhibited leadership in a variety of ways. She has quickly developed strong relationships with her peers, and is respected by the firm’s Principals. She has also taken on a number of our social responsibility initiatives, and leads them confidently in concert with a trusted support team. She has helped raise the level of awareness of our practice within Los Angeles, and communicates to our staff the importance of giving back to our community. Rita is a senior designer with Steinberg. She excels at design, and the communication thereof. She is able to easily collaborate with clients, and earns their trust quickly. She is extremely approachable, which supports open and frank discussion on design, and what “could be”. She leads our project design presentations, and has earned the trust of our clients. Her collaborative and energetic approach is key to her success in bringing people along with her vision. Rita and I have worked together on both large 250,000 GSF building projects, and on small renovation projects, and her ability to focus in on the core design opportunities that each project presents is a key asset to our firm, no matter what size project she works on. Rita has had a significant impact on Steinberg, both through her leadership in design, and through her approachability and positive personality. Due to these unique qualities and clear leadership, I support the nomination of Rita Carter to BD+C’s 40 under 40 award.

Sincerely,

Robert Lavey, AIA, LEED AP

Alek Zarifian

FAIA, LEED AP Technology Design Leader at SmithGroupJJR 2013 President at AIA-PF (Pasadena & Foothill Chapter)

“ I met Rita S. Carter at the AIA chapter of Pasadena in 2011 when she attended the kick off meeting for the ARE seminars for the year. Right from the first moment I was so impressed by her ability to clearly communicate her endeavors and interests in community and public service. I learned about her track record in being an active Managing Director of the Architecture for Humanity LA chapter. As she was embarking on the demanding journey of studying for her ARE exams she spoke about her interests and ideas in collaborating with the Pasadena chapter on the AIA, and joining the efforts of the two organizations. In the meantime Rita, singlehandedly, created the Disaster Preparedness & Resiliency program and took a leadership position throughout its development and growth which continues to date as one of the most innovative, productive and effective programs ever offered to the chapter members. Effective leadership, innovative thinking and genuine care for the community are all second nature to Rita. Her strong communication capacity and sincere demeanor enables her to always shine and bring success to any endeavor that she chooses to embrace. Rita has been a source of trust, pride and joy for her colleagues, friends and community, and promises to be a great leader in our great profession of Architecture. She has my highest recommendation for being recognized and elevated to one of the top 40 under 40 superstars of BD&C Magazine. Sincerely, Alek Zarifian, AIA, LEED AP 2013 AIA-PF Chapter President

Mark Gangi

AIA, NCARB, LEED AP Principal at Gangi Architects Chairman, Citizen Architect Committee at AIA-PF (Pasadena & Foothill Chapter)

“ Rita Saikali Carter is a true leader. She never takes no for an answer, and responds by being where decisions are being made elegantly supporting her position and moving her ideas forward. She is also a great team mate, as she knows how to listen, and incorporates the best ideas into what she is doing. Rita is the champion of the DPR (disaster preparedness and resiliency) task force under AIA Pasadena & Foothill Citizen Architect Committee. She survived the bankruptcy of Architecture for Humanity, where she was the director for Los Angeles. She never missed a step, just kept moving forward. When I see her in operation, I know this is the person that you want on your team. She is brave.

Jim Sarratori

Associate AIA Designer at Pfeiffer Partners Architects Director of Communications & Outreach at AFH:LA (Architecture for Humanity, Los Angeles)

“ I had the pleasure of working with Rita as both a volunteer and eventual board member with Architecture for Humanity in Los Angeles. Though often difficult to work a full time job and put in consistent hours for a non-profit, Rita showed incredible dedication and made it seem easy. Her extensive involvement in the New York City chapter was essential in the growth of our chapter here in Los Angeles. She continues to serve an important advisory role for our chapter as we transition into a new organization. Rita has a skill that brings people together, makes them care, and want to donate their time to help solve important humanitarian issues in their community. My first time meeting her was no exception. The enthusiasm she showed in that first encounter and continues to show with everything she does is a trait so difficult to find among many professionals in the industry. When Rita cares deeply about something (which happens often), she will make known to everyone in her network and life how important it is to help, and will find a way to recruit others to join the cause. Since stepping away from our board of directors, she remains committed to so many issues: disaster preparedness and relief, homelessness, art and education, and so much more. Without a doubt, Rita is truly one of the most kind, passionate, and respectable persons I know.

Adrienne Luce Corporate Social Responsibility, Philanthropy, and Social Impact Consultant

“ I could not possibly say enough good things about Rita. She is a driven and creative designer with a passion for philanthropy and for giving back to her communities. She is a natural leader who is admired and appreciated by all her clients and colleagues. Every day I feel lucky to work with someone who is as smart, honest and dedicated as Rita and I have no doubt Rita will change the world!

“ The Lebanese Collegiate Network (LCN) is 501c3 organization committed to the academic and professional development of university students and young professionals. My name is Serge Haddad and I was one of 7 co-founders that started this organization in 2007. I’m a licensed professional civil engineer and I am grateful to have worked with Rita Saikali. The LCN has hosted 8 national conventions around the country. At each convention, students and young professionals participate in workshops on public speaking, parliamentary procedures, negotiation, fundraising, and other skill sets that advance an individual in any profession they pursue. In 2013 and 2014, Rita Saikali supported the LCN by developing an outreach campaign to recruit more members and increase awareness to our cause. Her innovative social media approach combined with her dedication to perfection helped the LCN exceed its attendance goals during the LCN Convention. Rita’s knowledge in social media attracted a more professional audience and raised the credibility of the LCN on a national stage. She took this skillset and applied it as a workshop leader. Rita taught young professionals the proper way to protect their reputations through Social Media. This workshop was praised by several LCN Convention attendees. The LCN also awards scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students that demonstrate academic excellence and service to the Lebanese heritage. Her talents increased the number of applications received from the Lebanese American community. When the LCN embarked on an initiative to form 3 Subsidiary Regional Divisions, Rita was instrumental in soliciting volunteers to become officers on these boards. She did all this work while studying for her Architectural Exams. For this and more, Rita was recognized at the national convention with the LCN Supporter of the Year Award. Individuals like Rita Saikali are what makes worthwhile organizations like the LCN succeed.

Designing an environment for freshman students that creates a strong community, centers around a warm and welcoming community. It stitches social opportunities in both the living “neighborhoods” and the building “market”. The preserved open courtyard brings the heart of student life to the university’s center, creates a bridge between the existing student housing and the campus center, through to the academic core beyond, hence supporting an active hub for the school community.

PAC-CAN, Let’s make Hunger a Ghost | 10.2014 - 5.2015 Client LA Regional Food Bank Capacity 5,740 Cans Funds Raised $6,350 Lives Impacted 25,400 Meals / People Size 10’ W x 10’ L x 9’-6” H Role Team Captain Misc 20 Committee Volunteers, 7 Corporate Sponsors Awards People’s Choice Best in Show (Juror’s Choice)

First time participatingn the CANstruction event, I originally signed up to help where needed. Within a month, the team captain left to another company, at which time a colleague and I stepped up to take over co-captain responsibilities. My co-captain coordinated the design and construction logistics, while I took over facilitating the 16 team members, ensuring tasks were divided fairly and completed in a timely manner. I also facilitated the fundraising effort by securing sponsors, the tee-shirt production, and the can ordering and pickup from local markets. I helped construct the structure which was exhibited at the April “DTLA Art Walk”.

Fly NY 2010

Design Compeittion, Event, Fundraiser | 1.2010 - 8.2010 Client Architecture for Humanity, New York Partner NYC Department of Parks & Rec. Funds Raised $5,200 Lives Impacted 4,000 New Yorker Adults & Kids Role Director Misc 9 Committee Volunteers, 70 Day-Of Volunteers, 10 Competition Participants, 3 major sponsors

This initiative had 3 components; - a kite design competition - a “fly-day” at Pier I in Riverside Park South - a showcase / auction. The competition was open to both the New York City and Design communities. Through my relationships with people at Architizer, they were gracious in working with my committee to host the entries on their website as an online showcase. The fly-day brought out over 4,000 community members to fly their kites, and we hosted a kid’s kite-making station. I organized volunteer performances by 5 local bands to entertain the crowd throughout the day, and enlisted the local artist BORBAY to live-paint on the pier. The showcase / auction evening was held at the AIA Center for Architecture, and we invited 3 well known designers to judge and award the kit design competition submissions.

Youth Education Program | 10.2009 - 9.2011 Client New York City Youth Lives Impacted 130 Role Facilitator & Manager Volunteers 11 AEC Professionals

This design education for youth initiative was offered across all five New York City boroughs. Its purpose was to team AEC volunteers with schools, educators, and non-profits interested in teaching socially responsible design. Through workshops, the students engaged in hands-on exercises geared to help them collaborate and learn the possibilities of their contribution to the built environment. The goal was to educate, inspire, and empower the next generation of professionals. We influenced youth spanning in age; from kindergarten students at PS 261 in Boerum Hill, to special education youngsters at PS 375 in East Harlem, to high-school interns at the School Construction Authority, to name a few.
