An INFRASTRUCTURE design that discussed architecture as a system and being highly interrelated with anthropology.

Design of a FOYER that dedicated to a hypothesized concert of David Bowie in the 1973 London.

Nakagin Capsule TOWER conversion project with a focus on passive heating and cooling system and light weight facade.

The Master’s study has further uncovered my fascination with design and strengths in critical thinking, communication, team works and developing a unique graphic style. Specifically, in contrast with my bachelor’s projects which took a more conventional path in tackling designs, recent projects are grounded on in-depth research and a more critical understanding of what architecture is/ means to me. note* This portfolio (1.0) presents the final outcome of each studios that undertaken during my 2 years Master’s study; And ended with snapshots of my bachelor’s projects. Full version of projects is available at: https://issuu. com/ritawei. which contains detailed research and progress for each semester.

MASTER STUDIO C: A HUMAN INFRASTRUCTURE

LOVE REACTOR Underpressure Lab Lead by Alessia Pegoli and Vass VanSteel Program used: Rhino, Photoshop, Illustrator, AutoCAD 1

/PROJECT BRIEF & DESIGN PROCESS The projects will instigate the co-creation of architectural performance through the copulation of architecture and user. The process will provoke design to the dimensions of a spatial and bodily spectacle, a receptive system comprising the user body, the program apparatus and the resultant event as the site. We will challenge notions of the engagement of the eye and the body through mediums of storytelling and scene evocation to propel a discourse on the pertinence of cross- disciplinary methodology in creating a holistic design system.

MASTER STUDIO D: A FOYER DEDICATED TO BOWIE’S LAST CONCERT

Collage section of the Foyer: Symbolizing Bowie has brought life back to the industrialized city. He frees people’s mind. The foyer has become a focal point of the city.

/PROJECT BRIEF ‘Loving the Alien’ studio suggests that the experience of inhabitation, simultaneously engaging all our senses in the acts and rituals of life, is the most appropriate basis for the development and evaluation of architectural propositions. The studio will stand in defence of small, idiosyncratic works of architecture truly revealing the human dimensions of contemporary life.

the FALCON Loving the Alien Lead by Rennie Liffen & Virginia Mannering Program used: Rhino, Photoshop, AutoCAD 5

/DESIGN PROCESS The studio engages us with the experiential potential of the architecture of ‘Performance’ inspired by the extraordinary and enigmatic British musician, David Bowie. We use the work of Bowie as a metaphor to consider the phenomenological implications of the architectural ‘alien’. Narratives are developed in conjunction with our writer-collaborator to form the functional and emotional brief for the architecture of a new ‘Foyer’ (spatial sequence for audience from street to seat) at a detailed hypothetical music venue in central London.

3rd July, 1973, London “It’s Silver!” 5:30 PM; At the arrival The floating silver mass strikes my sight It flares; it reflects As if it is rebelling against its context Just as a gigantic spacecraft It is waiting for us to board

“It is alive!” 5:40PM The underbelly of the space craft is lighten up by the glowing cells Beer pipes, as veins, are weaving through those Illuminated spaces In one of the cells, she waves at me “Come on up!” she says.

5:50PM It is vast, it is spacious Beneath the glossy skin There are the bones Robust, metallic, cold

The artificial landscape 6:00PM I turned around I stood there, staring at the space As if there’s a landscape of stairs As if it is a stage that showcases all sorts of dramas and stories I set my foot on the steps Walk towards the greenish glows

The greenish glows 6:30PM Beer flows within the ‘venations’ As if it is the fuel for the space craft; the blood for this living organism Fascinating! I repeated After a few more sips The green seems to glow brighter, brighter

Excitement 7:00PM Half an hour till the show starts Excitement has already piled up within the linear gallery At the end of the tunnel I see the flare of the venue door It is teasing us

Scream Scream 7:30PM Nicotine has levelled up my excitement. I’m immersing in the taste of cigarette. Screams at the back of the door has now become a symphony A poetic expression of our passions indeed “let’s go” she says, With a sound of the glam room door closing.

REJUVENATE AZCA, MADRID Complex Project: Anatomy of a Landmark Project team: Rita Wei & Zac Chapman Lead by Aldo Trim, Albert Takashi Richert Program used: Revit, Rhino, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, AutoCAD

11

/PROJECT BRIEF We are required to perform a thorough urban research in order to understand Madrid’s history and context (specifically AZCA - a suburban commercial district), and to identify the Landmarks that could become catalyst for intervention. The research zooms in from the large scale of the city itself, to the medium scale the site, to the small scale of the building. Researches upon infrastructure, morphology, building typology, politics, economy and cultural facts will serve as basis for forming a narrative which is leading for the individual redesigns of the Landmark.

SITE ANALYSIS & MASTER PLANNING project site: AZCA Madrid city centre

/PROJECT BACKGROUND

proposed design public transportation stops retails & eateries office towers

In 1966, AZCA was imagined to be a lively shopping and residential district, with cultural venues that would reinvigorate Madrid and effectively become the new centre of the city. Decades of compromises, altered planning and redevelopments have seen the complex become highly heterogeneous and vastly confusing. In the last two decades of the 20th Century, towers arose and brought an influx of globalized institutions which ultimately re branded the site. It became the capitalist complex that can be seen today, the public arena that was originally conceptualized has been forced to the south and the centre lacks a dynamic urban arena. Stemming from the post war period, the complex’s infrastructure and planning is highly charged with ideals of post modernism and often, references to antiquity can be seen throughout the site. note: detail of research please refer to Portfolio 2.0

The design is built upon the Mahou plan. The exhaust is retained and treated as a highlight.
