Although architecture started for me with a passion to develop space and a creative environment, it eventually evolved into the creation of innovative design processes which involves space, form, materiality and structure. My interest lies in the detailed material organisation, exploration of new design tools and systems towards a research-based design methodologies and the conception of comprehensive design proposals. During my professional environment, I handled two projects simultaneously, coordinating detailed BIM Models with structural and MEP and further giving a detailed and informed dialogue between the construction on site and the consultants. After my post graduation in AADRL, I developed a profound interest in robotics and communcation and thus comprehending the opportunities in architecture and design through machine coding and scripting. Also, the group projects made me quite efficient and innovative in terms of ideas and interactions and an adaptive nature in any kind of group work. With multiple computational skills evolved over time, I’m eager to implement these skills in a comprehensive area of reference.

Architecture + Design | Selected Works 2013-2016
Brief AADRL Architectural Association School of Architecture, London
PlĂn[θ]os explores the use of autonomous distributed robots to fabricate temporal structures in a closed loop ecology where local material and energy harvesting ensure rapid, adaptable and environmentally sensitive design solutions are intrinsic to a algorithmic construction process.

The research employs a swarm of autonomous multicopters (UAVs) in combination with autonomous rovers (UGVs) to 3D print structures utilising locally available resources as a deposition material and as a 3D printing sub-strate (support structure) to simplify construction while reducing waste and logistical complexities.
| Robert Stuart Smith
The project employs this technology for the constant monitoring of desert regions where desert-greening initiatives can be autonomously identified and executed with frequency and urgency in the hope of reducing the increasingly serious adverse affects of climate change. Desert regions where water sources are identified are suggested as opportunistic locations for the autonomous construction of oasis irrigation, plantations and temporary accommodation shelters. The locally available sand is utilised as a construction material, mixed only with a binder and water. Sand dunes are appropriated as a scaffolding for the 3D printing process. Architectural spaces are created to replace the volume of sand dunes through a iterative process of 3D printing on the surface of dunes, adding additional sand and 3D printing additional layers of structural surface on top of one another. The sand substrate is then excavated by UVGs to create architectural shelters. These temporal shelters are to eventually erode and re-integrate into their monolithic material environment with minimal environmental impact.

The research employs multi- agent stigmergic processes in both camera-vision autonomous UAV flight and in design simulations to enable previous building activity to inform subsequent building operations. In this way construction is able to emerge from the complex real-time interactions of an autonomous swarm of building robots that are capable of adapting a suitable design to varied, situated on-site environments. A comprehensive development of bespoke material mixtures, material deposition hardware suitable for UAV 3d printing and both on-board and off-board flight control programs have demonstrated the viability of the design proposition and clarify the necessary parallel development of these elements in relation to algorithmically controlled construction sequences.

Position Ptemp, is a potential position where a canister of material will be emptied and from where the Uav needs to return to the material refillment point. The coordinates of Ptemp(xt,yt,zt), are stored locally in the system, so the Uav can steer towards this way point to continue the printing.

Autonomous flight based on local positioning using Computer Vision One of the ways of using Local Positioning of a UAV is by using the onboard computer vision through SLAM. The main disadvantage of using the onboard vision is that it is only aware of what is seen immediately in front of it [even though ideally a 360 degree camera can be used on board, the openCV based colour/ object detection is not reliable].
The camera detects stationary points as slam points for the computer vision

Processing > Real Time(Arduino/Proximity Sensor) > CNC
The main aim of this workshop was to create a real- time environment providing live- data feeds and location based services. This workshop also focused on ways to establish more inter- related physical and computational simulations. Potentially, there was investigation of the agent behaviours and trying to establish simple rules to create complex outcomes in physical fabrication.
3000mm z max
proximity IR sensor - Z axis
-3000mm z min
In our project, we aimed to design a digital system with the kinect camera and the proximity sensor which would develop behaviors of sensing, acting and feedback of live feeds to the CNC and thus resulting in physical milled pieces. The main challenge of this workshop was to develop skills in algorithmic designing (scripting), Arduino electronics, Kinect, Proximity Sensors, CNC milling and analyze their behaviors critically to design a real time environment.

Autonomous System : The final design outcome as part of a real-time, feedbacked simulation process
The real-time feedback loop process STEP 1 : Coding to move with an acceleration from white to black. Result : The agent tends to stay in the black area. STEP 2 : Coding for the agent to move avoiding the black and the white
area at the same time.
Result : The agent stays near the border line between black and white. STEP 3 : Coding for the agent with a set of local rules to move avoiding the black and white area and stays in a specific range of grey. Result : The agent detects the grey area but the agent tends to follow the same path and the image contrast has to be altered so that it seeks and moves in different grey area. STEP 4 : Coding for the kinect detected image to change its image brightness and contrast manually to improve accuracy. STEP 5 : Coding for the z depth to vary everytime the agent goes back to its origin.
V bit is considered as the most effective drill on milling large area surfaces. In our case the V bit was also elected asยง it can carve hollow path trails.

Seting up the workspace for the real-time experiment. The pc is running the processing agent based file, which is conected to the two sensors (inputs) and the cnc machine (output). The kinect camera detects the drills movent and sent data back to the screen. The agents behavior is controlled and therefore dependent to the machine’s movent and the distance measured by the proximity sensor.
Proxmity IR sensor position to detect the Cnc’s bed movemt in its axis. This distance is then mapped to adjust the brightness of the image sent back from the kinect camera, which results in the agent movement behavior.

Real time based final feedback loop -Fluvial Landforms simulation

Simulating fluvial landforms
Final 1:1 real time model, milled into a high density yellow foam, using a v-bit drill. The final product was milled 75% smaller than the actual 50x40 cm CNC bed dimensions. This was because we needed to map the kinect’s capture frame such that it focused on the yellow foam. In the picture above, the effective result of using the V-bit and its movement according to the processing agent file which was running in real time. An interesting effect is the “aggressiveway the foam piece was milled, as a result of the angle the kinect camera was placed into theCNC, and the use of the V-bit. The real time feedback loop was almost succesfully produced.

By a series of iterations of various digital explorations achieved based on different strategies, a further in-depth understanding of the computational simulations, the emergent complex behaviour that arises from the relations of numerous physical and digital systems was demonstrated.

03 research
The objective of the workshop deals with the exploration of material behavior and complexities of Sodium Acetate in forming a spanning structure. The challenge lies in dealing with a material of low compression, lower tensile capacities and brittle material composition. The potential and advantage of the material results from its behavior of instant state changing ability from fluid to solid giving an opportunity of spontaneous explorations of spanning structural forms constructed without scaffolding systems. The Initial exploration of the material probes the system of support connections in achieving maximum stability. The series of explorations are carried out in parallel with basic tests conducted in gathering material data in relation to parameters such as height-length-thickness-span. The resultant data informs the eventual design strategies in achieving an optimal maximum spanning structure.

in order to obtain the overall system of surface arches the process of construction began with the raising of the peripheral members and consequently connecting them with the intermediate members.
The Surface strategy was iterated to producing several prototyes permutating and combining the start and middle support components to achieve stable formations. The exploration dealt with trying to achieve a form consisting of lower number of support members and higher spanning capabilities of the surface structure. The arch members of the middle component were gradually decreased in numbers testing the support and strength of the overall form.z

The model was further iterated to consist of increased vaulted surface components resulting from an increased number of smaller base structures strategically located to distribute the overall loading of the upper surface onto the lower portion. This result provided higher stability due to an increase of support base components.
MODEL 3: Increased base structures
30
Architecture + Design | Selected Works 2013-2016
A stable base formation was constructed influenced by regular branching pattern and the concept of tree algorithm. The lower structure consisted of a 3 X 3-membered tetrahedral connection branching out further into a connection of 3-2-2 upper branching formation. The regularity in the branching stabilized and unified the overall form. This prototype was later combined with surface formations to result in hybrid spanning structures.

Architecture + Design | Selected Works 2013-2016
The site office of the Kavya Buildcon’s township was essentially designed to house the administrative staff during the construction and sale phase of their township in Khardi, Maharashtra, India.
roof plan
concept:
The main concept of the design is to evolve the building from the contours of the site which varies from 1-2 metres within one metre in plan. Following the contours, the building had undulating roofs, which were followed down by a green patch of landscape. As a result, the building looks as a part of the site, rising from the contours.
This office building echoes the sand dunes of the surrounding landscape in angular planes covered with grass simultaneously contrasting with its surroundings. Office spaces are laid out in a single level. The entire site is covered with grass with angular planes rising gradually over the built up spaces & shields them from high temperatures. The planning of this building itself ensures cool naturally ventilated & naturally lit spaces within it. The sculpted feel of the spaces within the building create a unique work environment underneath the angular planes of that reduce the heat gain into the building substantially.
floor plan
The north facing side of the building is fully glazed so as to let in the maximum amount of the northern indirect light while the southern side has maximum landscaped area along with the coinciding undulating site. Even though RCC was used, the structure majorly was designed in steel. I- sections and box sections of various sizes were used on site as per the suggestions of the structural engineer. 39
CONCEPT: The Bungalow is a part of Ateria, a bungalow scheme by Kavya Buildcon in Lonavala, Maharashtra. It houses the clubhouse in the basement and the owner’s houses on the upper floors. Angled spaces projected towards different directions encapsulated in an organically folded concrete skin create a two level building. The entire frontage of the site along the main road overlooks large trees and a riverbed and hills. The axis of the building changes constantly from one side to the other allowing each space within to look out towards different views of the surrounding landscapes.

Elizabeth House a project under Suraj Estate Developers, Mumbai, is a residential tower similar to any normal residential building in Mumbai, has limitation in carpet area and therefore rises to higher no of floors with basement + ground floor + 11 floors. The tower was designed to house MTNL office on the basement & ground floors. These floors have a separate lift and staircase too. Of the 11 floors of the tower, first, second and third floors are designed as podiums for car parking. The building is designed with a car lift due to the lack of space for ramps. Structurally, the first four floors (GF to third podium) of the tower are designed according to the requirement of the podium parking. There is a transfer slab after third podium which has girders of 1.5m depth. The transfer slab is to change the position of the columns after the third floor according to the residential apartments on the upper floors.
