S Cover image: Brianna Pike, Alecia Jensen and Anna Harves of SIXHANDS
Bold impressions Boutique design firm SIXHANDS is taking fabric design from the loom to the keyboard with fashion houses and now interior designers getting in on the action. By Michelle Rafferty
which is framed by a towering hot pink design hanging in the reception area. “That’s exactly the style of interior design work we do,” says Alecia.
Stepping into the warehouse style headquarters of Sydney design firm SIXHANDS could be likened to a colourful trip through the wardrobe of some of the country’s top fashion design houses. Over here an artwork Camilla and Marc used last season for a great mini dress and over there the latest and greatest from Manning Cartell. It’s the work of a trio of university friends turned business partners Anna Harves, Alecia Jensen and Brianna Pike. In 2006 they threw in their fashion design jobs to step out on their own and set their own rules. It’s now a philosophy both the rag trade and more recently the interior design industry are flocking to get a piece of. SIXHANDS offers something distinctly different to anything else in the world of print design. Where most businesses are busy fussing over just a few pigments in a silk screen, SIXHANDS is creating photorealistic prints with a selection of colours from digital means. “It allows you to use millions and millions more colours. Colour is what we are all about,” Anna laughs. That’s evident from the SIXHANDS studio mcgrath.com.au
“Interior design is about clean, distinct, fresh lines and someone can hang one of our prints on the wall to add colour and personality yet it still allows them to have something a bit different.” Brianna says colour is such an important part of SIXHANDS. “It allows us to express ourselves, make things special, brings life to things. It allows us to give a unique view on interiors.”
“We saw the light show on the Opera House during the Sydney Festival earlier this year and thought there is no reason our designs can’t be up there.” Alecia Jensen
Already well established in the world of fashion, SIXHANDS is now offering some of their work to the interior design industry. “It’s a different world to fashion which is fast moving and changes every week and month,” Alecia says. “With interior design you might work on something and it could be a year before they need to use it. It’s just different.” These three vivacious personalities work on each of the designs as a team. “We are all compulsively creative, we tell our individual stories through
our artworks in the styles and motifs we use, SIXHAND is like a tiny tribe recording a contemporary world,” Anna says. “There are prints inspired by trips to Africa and others based on childhood memories.” At the same time, Alecia says they all critique each other’s work and welcome feedback and customer ideas. “We aren’t precious with our designs,” she says. “You need to stay open to other people’s ideas because you never know where it will take you. One fashion house might say they hate one design and the next fashion house will love it.” Fashion and interiors are not the only ambitions SIXHANDS has in mind. “We saw the light show on the Opera House during the Sydney Festival earlier this year and thought there is no reason our designs can’t be up there,” Alecia laughs. “Who knows where SIXHANDS will end up. “Brianna has even bigger ideas. “I think a global presence will be the next thing. The new wallpaper and fabric collection is already leading us in that direction.”
