Duck Foot Paddle Tines Reduce Header Loss, Boost Harvest Speed
Grain loss was the reason behind the farm innovation of Duck Foot slip-over paddle tines. Saskatchewan farmer, Steve Kastning, wanted something durable to help feed certain crops at harvest, something that could be reusable as well as fast and easy to install or remove, if needed. To date, the Duck Foot, aptly named for its resemblance to a duck’s webbed foot, has been beneficial in beans, pulses, cereals and straight cut canola among other crops. It is field-tested and proven to reduce header losses up to 75%. A significant feature of the Duck Foot’s patented design and function is that it quickly and easily slides over the existing reel tine and attaches to the pipe. Originally the Duck Foot was secured with a fastening tie, such as a cable tie which worked well but did not always prevent the part from pulling off in certain conditions. To rectify this problem a clip system was designed and tested in 2019. It is now included with every Duck Foot. What started as an idea in 2015 became a success with Duck Foot receiving an Innovation Award at Canada’s Farm Progress Show in 2018. Initially designed to fit MacDon because that is
what Steve used, the product line has expanded due to farmer interest for other headers. It is now available for the following brands: Agco, Case IH, Geringhoff, GTS, John Deere, MacDon, Massey Ferguson and New Holland. After testing different configurations, the best results were found by installing a Duck Foot on every second tine, no less than every third. Customers see the benefit of constantly moving the crop for less cutter bar loss and a more even feed for better threshing. The combine operator can slow their reel speed further preventing crop damage. Additional benefits include less stripping and increased ground speed, saving farmers valuable time and money. Steve and his wife Chrisa work together in the business. They exhibit at trade shows where they enjoy meeting directly with farmers and people in the ag industry to discuss the benefits of the Duck Foot. Steve and Chrisa are connected to their product and value being able to offer farmers a highquality part along with exceptional customer service.
