Socorro, New Mexico

O

ver two centuries before Christopher Columbus’ fabled sojourn to the New World from Spain, Piro Indians, the southernmost Pueblo tribe, inhabited villages along the Rio Grande. Spanish explorers made their way north from Mexico, establishing the El Camino Real – the Royal Road into “New Spain.” As a result, they were frequent visitors at the Piro villages. Socorro got its name in 1598 from explorer Juan de Oñate, whose tired and hungry men were given food and shelter by the Piros. Oñate renamed the Piro pueblo “Socorro,” which means “help” in Spanish. Also in 1598, the San Miguel Mission (one of the oldest churches in the country) was founded. When New Mexico became a U.S. territory in 1848, the region saw some relief as the military established a series of forts for protection. In Socorro County, the Army established Fort Conrad in 1851, and then later relocated to the newlybuilt Fort Craig in 1854. In 1889, Socorro, with her mines, mills and smelters, became the center of mining activity. As a result, the government’s new School of Mines (now New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology), opened in Socorro in 1893. NMT offers excellent engineering and science degree programs to its students, and also houses the New Mexico Tech Mineral Museum, which is thought by many to be the “great treasure trove of the southwest.” The Mineral Museum opened in 1889, at the same time as the rest of the university. Just south of Socorro, is the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is located on more than 57,000 acres and hosts its yearly “Festival of the Cranes” event in November. The Refuge has a visitor center, walking and hiking trails, and a driving tour with plenty of opportunities to see the area’s abundant wildlife. Trinity Site, located on White Sands Missile Range, is the location of the first nuclear bomb detonation, which took place on July 16, 1945. Trinity Site is open twice yearly, in April and October, for public visits. The Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, simply known as the “VLA,” is one of the world’s premier astronomical radio observatories. The new City of Socorro Rodeo and Sports Complex features a covered rodeo arena, an outdoor practice arena, 98 horse stalls, a 2-mile walking/running trail, a 50 space RV park, 4 regulation-sized soccer fields, and a 5k cross-country track. Socorro’s rich and diverse history has contributed to the city it is today. With its friendly spirit, incredible bird-watching opportunities, world-class science and technology developments, fascinating cultural attractions, and year-round outdoor recreation, Socorro offers everyone something to love. Touch 100 Years of Aviation History

T

here’s an adventure for everyone at Pima Air & Space Museum. Hundreds of thousands visit from all over the world to create lasting memories or relive them. The

this close to such a large, international variety of iconic and rare aircraft including military, commercial, civil, and experimental. There’s 250,000 square feet of indoor exhibits in six hangars,

museum offers endless opportunities for discovery with 360 aircraft on 80 acres and 100 years of flight at your fingertips from a Wright Flyer to a 747 Queen of the Skies. Nowhere else in the world can you get

of which three are dedicated to WWII. You’ll come face to face with history’s finest planes like the SR-71 Blackbird, the first Boeing 777 ever built, the oldest B-52, and the last B-36 ever built. You’ll even get to explore under

the wings of rare and sole-surviving aircraft like the Budd Conestoga, Columbia XLJ-1, and the Martin Mariner. The unprecedented collection of aircraft at Pima began in the 1960’s. Air Force Commanders at what is now known as the “Boneyard,” the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG), wanted to preserve aviation heritage from going up in flames at the smelter. What started as a line of airplanes on the base’s fence is now the largest privately funded air and space museum in the nation. Pima Air & Space Museum has got something for everyone whether you’re a decorated pilot or have never taken to the skies. Visitors routinely rave that it’s much bigger with more to do than expected and fun for all ages. The museum is in Tucson, Arizona just minutes off the highway at 6000 E. Valencia Rd. It’s open 363 days a year from 9am-5pm. Your adventure begins  at www.pimaair.org.

A

t Antelope Canyon, you see up close just how talented the hands of nature really are. Hundreds of years of water has washed and carved through these caves, giving them a mystical quality and inspiring the Navajo to name them a sacred site. Fortunately, for the lovers of geology and beautiful landscapes, they also make a great destination for you. The Upper Antelope reaches a 4,000 feet elevation and walls stretch up 120 feet above the stream bed. This popular slot canyon is located in the heart of the LeChee Chapter of the Navajo Nation and has become a popular destination for sightseers, geology and history lovers and for photographers, hoping to capture some of the area’s natural beauty. It’s a Navajo Tribal Park, accessible by permit only since 1997, ensuring that the pristine beauty of this place remains intact. No climbing is required to get to the canyon’s entrance and the entire length of the canyon is at ground level. Sunlight radiates down from the openings at the top of the canyon, giving photographers and sightseers alike beams or shafts of light to enhance the aura of the place. These are year-round occurrences, but the summer months bring more of them due to the position of the sun in sky during this season. Come experience the canyon in one of our exclusive guided tours - It’s the only way you can and should see the canyon. Aside from gaining intimate insight into the canyon, our guides keep you safe and dry and help you avoid some of the seasonal pitfalls of the canyon tours. This canyon enjoys the distinction of being the most-visited and most-photographed slot canyon in the Southwest. It lies on Navajo land, near Page, Arizona. Come enjoy the two separate photogenic sections in the Upper Canyon — or the Crack and in the Lower Antelope Canyon — the Corkscrew. The adventure of a lifetime awaits you! Western Heritage Museum and Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame: The Home of “Hobbspitality”

D

id you know that Lea County is home to more Rodeo Champions than any other county in the United States? Visit the Western Heritage Museum and Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame, located on the campus of New Mexico Junior College, where permanent exhibits range from the history of Southeastern New Mexico (there’s more than you think!) to the pioneers, ranchers, and rodeo champs who have put Lea County on the map in the Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame. Check out the artifacts on display, or be one of the first to delve deeper into our collections with our new touchscreen technology. “There’s so much history here, and the population has such pride in their heritage, that it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement,” says Erin Anderson, Executive Director. Not only can you learn about the history of the area with the permanent exhibits, but you can always find something new in the traveling exhibits gallery. “We pride ourselves on providing a unique, educational experience for all ages,” continues Anderson. “For example, a few years back we brought in Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, which was HUGE for our area. Not only was that our most successful exhibit to-date, but it also made other museums in New

Mexico look at us and say ‘If HOBBS can do it, then we can too!’ How cool is that?” More recently, the Museum has hosted exhibits about Rodin, National Geographic, dinosaurs, Goose Bumps! The Science of Fear, and so much more. “You do not want to miss what we have coming up,” explains Anderson. January 16 – May 10, 2020, discover all of the gross, gooey, and gory things happening inside your body with Grossology: The Impolite Science of the Human Body and Zoo in You: The Human Microbiome. Grossology, based on the book with the same name, is a science-in-disguise exhibition where kids get the answers to many questions they absolutely love to ask about the human body: what is snot, why do we burp, how does our stomach work, and so much more!! Zoo in You explores the tiny microbes living inside all of us, and teaches kids how to take care of our “tiny tenants”. “These exhibits are SUPER interactive,” says Anderson, “and you’re likely to find the adults having just as much, if not more fun than the kids!” May 30-August 2, 2020, come out and see two fantastic photography shows featuring topics that are not only important to this region, but to the world: Facing the Inferno: The Wildfire

Photography of Kari Greer and Pollinators: Keeping Company with Flowers. I’m sure you’ve heard about wildfires recently, specifically in California and Australia, and the decline of pollinators. Come find the beauty and danger of wildfires and learn why we need pollinators and how we can help bring back and maintain their population. Along with these wonderful exhibits, we have Family Fun Days, Distinguished Author readings and signings, and a Classic Movie Series. Here’s a list of the subjects for the upcoming Movie Series: The Great Divas of Hollywood’s Golden Age through March 8, Classic Science Fiction Films April 19-June 6, Classic Summer Films June 14-July 26, and the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment August 2-30. These movies are Sundays at 2pm and are FREE. What’s the best part about all this? Admission is only $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors. Memberships are available, which gets you in for FREE, and helps us provide numerous educational activities. For more information on the various exhibits and events, check out the website (www.nmjc.edu/museum), find us on Facebook, or come on out and visit the Museum! Hours are Tuesday-Saturday 10am-5pm and Sunday 1-5pm. 

The Harrell House Bug Museum

T

he Harrell House Bug Museum is a unique attraction in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Founded in 2013 by Wade Harrell as a way for him to share his passion for insects and other life on earth, the museum houses more than 100 of his live insects, arachnids, reptiles, amphibians, fish and more. This number has grown over the years, as the Museum has taken in many former pet reptiles whose owners could no longer care for them. Some of the more popular live exhibits include an amazing collection of more than 20 different species of tarantulas, a scorpion exhibit where you can see them glow under ultraviolet light, the bizarre African lungfish, and many others. The animal that gets the most attention is Sam, a six-foot Asian water monitor lizard the museum adopted in 2017.

The Museum gift shop also has a huge selection of unusual gifts, souvenirs and toys. For information on hours of operation, admission prices, and animal feedings call (505) 6958569 or check the website www.HarrellHouse.com.

The Museum is also home to Oliver Greer’s astounding Crawlywood Collection, featuring 5,000 pinned and preserved insects from around the world. This comprehensive collection features some of the largest and most colorful specimens of butterflies, moths, beetles, walkingsticks, spiders, scorpions, and much more. The collection also has many rare and unusual specimens that you can see nowhere else. In addition to the insects in the established collection, you can see many of Oliver’s more recent acquisitions, including a fourteeninch giant centipede from Peru, a two-foot walkingstick from Borneo and a 10-inch Goliath bird-eating tarantula from Suriname. Perhaps the most popular activity at the museum is getting the chance to touch some of the friendly live bugs! The staff is always ready to get out gentle invertebrates that kids of all ages can touch and hold. There are also animal feedings every day at 4:00! www.ritzhospitalitymag.com

Welcome To Ontario, Oregon Home of “America’s Global Village Festival

O

ntario, Oregon is nestled on the lush banks of the Snake River and is proud to be the first Oregon city you encounter when traveling west from the Idaho border. Once you enter the uniquely rugged landscape of the Treasure Valley, you will come to understand why many people never

want to leave. Those who choose to live here understand the meaning and importance of a quality, family oriented lifestyle. Thus, the community reflects the energy, distinction, and diversity of its surrounding geography and residents. And speaking of diversity, this year the Ontario Chamber of Commerce will host the 20th annual America’s Global Village Festival in Lions Park on June 1st – the first Saturday in June. The

festivities begin at 10:00 a.m. with a multicultural parade through the park followed by a flag ceremony. The Festival celebrates the authentic cultural villages of African, Basque, German, Hawaiian, Japanese, Mexican, Pioneer, Scottish and Native American cultures. Each village features food, arts and crafts, cultural demonstrations and free youth activities. The main stage will highlight cultural entertainment throughout the day. Upon entering the park for the Festival, visitors will be given a souvenir passport. With each visit to the villages, the passport will be stamped. When children have a full passport, they will receive a free prize. Adults who turn in a complete survey will have a chance to win one of two $50 gas cards. While Ontario is the kind of laid-back town you dream about when you want to get away from the hectic schedule of a busy, big city lifestyle, it also boasts a myriad of recreational activities for all ages, interests and skill levels within driving distance from its downtown area. Oregon State Parks beckon from just over the border

I

t’s not such a long cast to your next fishing vacation at an Oregon State Park. Several parks are just over the border, offering premier fishing, boating, camping and proximity to nearby attractions — all at an affordable rate and with Oregon’s renowned hospitality. Farewell Bend State Park sits on Brownlee Reservoir, popular each spring for its large and plentiful catfish, as well as bass and crappie. Just 1½ hours west of Boise on the Idaho-Oregon border, the park is also a popular base camp for hunters each October and November. Visitors can camp in electrical sites, tent sites or one of two rustic log cabins. Lake Owyhee State Park, a desert oasis just two hours west of Boise, boasts fantastic fishing each spring, especially smallmouth and largemouth bass and black crappie. The 54 mile-long reservoir also has channel catfish and is occasionally stocked with redband trout. The park’s campground offers two boat ramps and plenty of tent and electrical sites. Two cabins offer stunning lakeside views. This park is also in the perfect location for the fall hunting season. Eastern Oregon also has several small state campgrounds along scenic rivers, where fish are plentiful and distractions disappear. Scenic and quiet Catherine Creek State Park in the western foothills of the Wallowa Mountains is just 3½ hours northeast of Boise, but it feels a world away. Secluded Minam State Recreation Area on the banks of the Wallowa River is 3½ hour drive northwest from Boise. These primitive campgrounds don’t take reservations; they are perfect for that spur-of-thewww.ritzhospitalitymag.com

moment fishing trip. Farewell Bend and Lake Owyhee take reservations up to nine months in

advance, and cabins especially tend to fill quickly. Learn more and make a reservation at oregonstateparks.org 

Cast your line, right next door. Farewell Bend State Park • Brownlee Reservoir, at the head of the Snake River Canyon • Catfish, bass and crappie

Dodge City, Kansas Get the Heck into Dodge!

L

et us take you back, way back, when Dodge City was considered the “Wickedest Little City in the West.” We can’t move forward without acknowledging that past, the gunfights, the dance hall girls, the grit of old Dodge City. Boot Hill Museum takes you back in time, giving you a front row seat to all that history. You can also take a walk through downtown Dodge along the Trail of Fame to revisit the heroes of the past. How about a visit inside the Gunfighters Wax Museum to get a glimpse of the men and women who made Dodge City famous? Once you’ve seen how they looked and acted, now get a glimpse of how they lived. The Home of Stone, built in 1881, still has its original furnishings and a gallery dedicated to the pioneer women of Ford County. If you’re looking for a bit more, how about some culture and history in the beautifully restored Santa Fe Depot, the largest in Kansas! The Depot is now home for the Depot Theater Company. You can enjoy dinner theater performances at Dodge City’s very own ‘Broadway on the Plains.’ Dodge City’s newest attraction combines today’s entertainment with a flavor of the Old West. Try your luck at the Boot Hill Casino & Resort. This is a State Owned, state-of-the-art Casino with all the atmosphere of the Old West. Join the likes of Doc Holiday and bring your stake to the Boot Hill Casino! Also located right next door, you might want to attend a concert or other event at the all new United Wireless Arena. If you’re looking for some 21st century entertainment, visit during Dodge City Days. It’s a 10 day festival in late July and August, including parades, BBQ Contests, dances, arts and

crafts, and let’s not forget Kansas’ largest rodeo. This action packed event is on the Wrangler Pro Tour providing five days of gut wrenching, edge of your seat excitement. If rodeos aren’t your thing, start your engines! Dodge City Raceway Park is one of the finest dirt tracks around. Besides stocks, modifieds, super modifieds and more, the World of Outlaws also visit each summer with all the action and

crashes you could want. So if you thought Dodge City was stuck in the past, you’ve got it all wrong. We can blast you back to the days of Wyatt Earp or spring you forward for some 21st century entertainment. What are you waiting for? Get the Heck into Dodge! Hays is famous for being a frontier town with a colorful history that features the legendary “Wild Bill” Hickok, “Buffalo Bill” Cody and General George Custer. Hays City was founded in the fall of 1867 when the Union Pacific Railroad reached the military post of Fort Hays along the banks of Big Creek. Because many of the first citizens were railroad workers, saloon owners, soldiers and even desperados, the early days of Hays City were wild and dangerous. During several months in 1869, “Wild Bill” Hickok served as the acting sheriff after several incidents prompted the citizens to form a vigilante committee. Many of the outlaws were buried at the original boot hill cemetery, which was located on a hill just north of Hays City. Historic Fort Hays and the Ellis County Historical Museum feature many displays and provide tours for visitors to relive the exciting frontier history. With attractions like the Stone Gallery, Moss-Thorns Gallery of Art, The Hays Arts Center and 711 Studio, Hays is the arts and entertainment mecca of western Kansas. The crown jewel of the Fort Hays State University entertainment scene is the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center. This historic, yet modern facility has a seating capacity of 1,100, and is used  for both college and community events. 28 R i t z

Iowa’s National Motorcycle Museum

O

ver 500 motorcycles, several thousand pieces of art and memorabilia, even a very early airplane are part of the National Motorcycle Museum presentation of American transportation history. Located about 50 miles west of the Mississippi in Anamosa, Iowa, artist Grant Wood’s territory, the Museum offers visitors a look at motorcycles from around the world, 1890’s through the 20th Century.

EARLY AMERICAN TRANSPORTATION

INNOVATION NOW OPEN!

OPEN DAILY YEAR ‘ROUND

WWW.NATIONALMCMUSEUM.ORG 102 Chamber Drive, Anamosa, Iowa 52205 • 319-462-3925 THE NATIONAL MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM IS A NON-PROFIT 501(C)(3) CORPORATION.

If that huge motorcycle collection isn’t reason enough to visit, Museum staff recently installed the Early American Transportation Innovation exhibition focused on pre-1920 transportation ideas and inventions of all types. A timeline of innovations opens the exhibit and you’ll learn about the origins of steam power, internal combustion in motorcycles, even aviation innovation is touched on. Central to this new show is a one-off airplane the Museum received as donation recently. The 1911 STECO Aerohydroplane, a very innovative bi-plane on floats, created by Chicago inventor James Stephens is powered by a French Gnome-Omega seven cylinder rotary engine. Surprised to see an airplane in a motorcycle museum? It turns out that Glenn Curtiss, the Wright Bothers and other inventive types experimented with wheeled and winged transportation; there’s innovation cross-over. “So many interesting approaches to transportation were tried, so many patents established in these early years. The motorcycles, bicycles and the airplane show so much interesting and creative American innovation,” says National Motorcycle Museum chairman, Jill Parham. “This was a challenging project in so many ways. We are grateful to the Minnesota Air & Space Museum for donating the STECO collection, the monetary donations of support and for all the volunteers who helped get it installed in our Museum.” Motorcycles on display include a replica 1869 Roper Steam Cycle, Flying Merkel, Iver Johnson, Reading Standard, Excelsior, Thor, Sears, Thomas, the very rare Blue Bird and Crouch plus fine Indians and Harley-Davidsons. The National Motorcycle Museum rotates exhibits annually so don’t wait long to visit. Whether you’re a motorcycle enthusiast or just into American history, plan your visit at www. nationalmcmuseum.org, or call 319 462 3925.  www.ritzhospitalitymag.com
