Site Orders ARCH 283 Spring 2015 Rhinoceros 5 Illustrator
Studio 2B is about exploring and analazying the natural and urban site orders. This projects assignment was to develop a site plan and building design such as a music venue and a motel. I wanted to make a special emphasis given to the relationship between programe and external context. This design method is being influenced by the adjacencies and environment through the development of clear systems of movement, space, structure, energy efficiency and day light. The project is located in Idyllwild, California. It is known as the largest community in San Jacinto Mountins in Riverside County. I took the weather in consideration since the temperature differs from heat waves to snow. The building design is cut into an asymmetrical design between the music venue and the motel. It is elevated above ground in order to create communal space beneath, parking and also a contiunity of the garden beneath throughout the site. Both spaces are connected by stairs, crosswalks, and elevators. The crosswalk is an open bridge above ground that connects from one lobby to the other. There are courtyards created beneath the building that extrude through the building. Trees come through the building in relation to the nature and relate a connectivity to the space of the interior and exterior. Long horizontal windows are placed around the building in order to provide ventilation. and privacy. Vertical windows are places in major spaces such as the restaurant and lobby space is order to provide lighting and a fascination view to the surrounding nature.
The open courtyards throughout the building create access for light to enter the space below. Shade and natural air flow will be created in the summer. Snow and rain will be absorbed by a mechanical apparatus and the recycled water will be used to privide for the city and farms.
A fabric is used surrounding the building in order to create an effect of natural light , pattern and privacy. The concrete structure that hold up the building is an oval shape for its simplicity and elegant form.
Every unit has its own “finger that extends out of the building that overlooks a certain view. The restaurant will have seating surrounding the glass courtyard that provides the opportunity to look down and also up to the sky. Large windows are being places vertically and horizontally through out the restaurant in order to create an open feeling for the guest. The fabric surrouding the building will give a glowing feel to the space and also create a calm pattern through light in the interior spaces.

The concept is the creation of affordable housing for migrant workers in Coachella Valley in California by making use of appropriate materials, colors, and textures. The Coachella Valley is an irrigated agricultural and recreational desert valley that extends for roughly 45 miles across eastern part of Riverside County. It is bounded by the west by mountains and on the east by desert. With nearly 100,000 acres of diversified farmland, the Coachella Valley plays a significant role in agricultural success in California. Upon that, affordable housing is very important for low income residents and workers. The community that is being created is meant for migrant workers that would move in for a short amount of time and then the next group of migrant workers would move in. The use of materiality is very important when keeping weather circumstances in mind. Concrete, steel, and glass are being used in this project. A shading structure is also being created that connects two units together and the two units will also be sharing a wall that will function as the plumbing wall. The community is very symmetical due to the creation of public spaces where residents can easily communicate with another and engage with the community. Every four units will create its own courtyard and it will automatically create a shading structure over the communal space. Patio’s will be facing each other whereby they will be surrounded by gardends that will be connected to each units in a continuous and symmetrical concept. Privacy will still be created by the differenciation of location of the windows. Each window will have its shading structure,

The canopy becomes a way of improving such drastic shifts inside the house, reducing the need for expensive heating and cooling systems. There are major changes in temperature in Coachelle Valley. The 3- foot gap between the top of the house and the peak of the canopy allows breeze to pass through on hot days. When nightfall brings a massive drop in temperature. The canopy keeps warmth from leaving the house.

The Embassy Border Crossing ARCH 283 Spring 2015 Rhinoceros 5 Illustrator
The Embassy Border Crossing project is a design developed at the border between San Diego and Tijuana. Also known as the San Ysidro Port of Entry. It is the busiest land border crossing in the world. While designing this project, I kept a few projects of Kengo Kuma in mind and also japanese joinery. The structure of the building is created out of a woodwork that connects through joints. I wanted the structure to function as a lightweight structure and a guideline throughout the interior. The structure will act as columns and will enlarge the feel of space in the interior. The columns hwlp to give a sense of office space and also different zones within the program. People will be able to moe freely through the space. The creation of circulation and program is created by the use of a grid system. A fifteen by fifteen feet grid system is being used as a guideline to create spaces without the use of walls. Variation of thicknesses of columns are being used to define space and the velocity of the use of space. The materiality used throughout the building is wood, steel, fabric and glass. Steel and glass is being used for security purposed and for the strength of the towers. Multiple programs are being involved when it comes to a border crossing. An embassy and business offices are being locates on the high rise. Pedestrian crossing will be located on the ground floor that will differentiate between exterior and
Axonometric floorplan of multiple levels of one tower. There are vertical exposed columns that includes the circulation and access to other floors. The material used for the columns is glass. Transparancy is used throughout the building.
I studied a case study from Kengo Kuma project called “The Prostho Museum Research Center. My interest was the unique creation of wood sticks with joints and how program was developed using a grid system.
United States There are 3 towers in total and each tower has its own program dedicated to the city surrounding activities. Business offices of all kind are included in one of the towers. The embassy and its offices is included in the other and then communital spaces are included in the third tower. The towers are placed on the site whereby the majority of the building received natural light and thats why the height of each tower differs. Ceiling height will differenciate depending on the space. a higher ceiling will give a larger sense of the space but certain spaces have a lower ceiling due to providing privacy and security purposes.

This project is a design concept for a high rise residential tower that includes other programs. The site for this project is located in New York on Lafayette Street. The site has two side roads that include one way traffic and bike lanes. The site is surrounded by other commercial buildings and part residental. The design of the tower has ten stories and all stories will be residential. The tower takes up a third of the site. The rest of the site is specifically designed for commercial use whereby the roof slopes down to the ground. The public is able to access the roof from the two side streets whereby the roof is designed to be a communal space. The tower includes three modular geometrical shapes that interlock to one other. The circulation will be on the outside of the building whereby every unit on each floor is accessed through the same path. There is a two story unit and there are two variations of one story units. The horizontal circulation was an important element while designing. The elevator cuts throughout the building. The elevator will be accessible through the commercial space but also from the side street. Sixty units are included in the building. A consistent apparatus is created for this residential building. The apparatus connects the kicthen, bathroom, and shower within one surface.
This is a two story unit that has 750 square footage in total with a 15 foot tall ceiling. It can be used for students or either a family with 2 kids. The bedroom is located on the

Housing Apparatus ARCH 383 Fall 2015 Rhinoceros 5 Illustrator Group project Estefania Gigena & Marcelle Rico
This project is ann investigation into the application of an altering device, as a method of rethinking the way we dwell. Spanning from the scale of housing as a complex to housing as a living unit and the element within. A design of the notion of the architectural apparatus at two distincts. Creation of a dwellng unit starts to contrast with the creation of privacy, public, and semi public spaces. A complex structure with an organization system is created when all individual units are one. The concept of shifting the individual apparatus causes the created of privacy between the exterior and interior of the units and overal complex. The high ceiling creates a group of structually different organs working together in the performance of a particular function. Cantaliving also created privacy and functions as a shading structure beneath. The site for this project is located in Barrio Logan, San Diego. Vertical and Horizontal elements are used through out the building whereby privacy is the main element in the design. Shared plumbing walls run vertically through the units whereby two units share one wall. A communal space is being created by placing a cafe on the outer side of the complex. The circulation of the complex will run through the back of the complex whereby it created a private entrance to the units. The structure of the building will be build out of reinforced concrete. Steel balconies and facades give a heavy tone to the building.

Case Study : Wozoco Apartments ARCH 383 Fall 2015 Rhinoceros 5 Illustrator
Wozoco apartments is a housing complex located in Amsterdam, Netherlands. This building is a housing complex designed by MVRDV. The client wanted hundred units for elderly people with a gallery-type circulation. The units however did not fit the site in an acceptable way due to strict zoning regulations. MVRDV got the opportunity to design thie complex. A 100 units would not fit on the site so they decided to cantilever the rest of the units. There were thirteen of them. Only 87 units where able to be build within the site. They wanted to maintain adequate sunlight for each units. Great consideration was given to arranging the units in a highly efficient manner and economical use of materials, leading to significant savings which compensated for the added expense of the suspended units. The finish work was also simplified, leaving many of the details and joints exposed, giving it a somewhat industrial appearance. Despite some uniformity of units in the interest of economic efficiency, the South facade offers the residents a sense of individuality, character and diversity through the variety of colors, sizes and locations of the balconies and windows. Plumbing walls were used thoughout the building and a strong steel structure was sused to be able to make the cantilevers function. The rich contrast between the horizontal wood siding and the metal and glass of the other building elements adds to the dynamic quality of the exterior. The balconies vary in depth and width and are applied in a quite random pattern in order to create privacy.

My name is Rivan Karem and I am a third year architecture student at Woodbury University. My primary goal is to be able to pursue a career in architecture whereby I am able to create new and intriguing designs. I was born and raised in Amsterdam and I have always been fascinated in the designs and details of every building I saw. I have always been a visual learner. In order for me to explain a certain topic, I am compelled to sketch it out. I enjoy computer work and hand drafting. When I was younger, I would admire the work and designs of my uncle that is an architect. As I grew up watching his and other architects designs come to life, I found myself more drawn to the vast possibilities of their careers, and the huge feelings of satisfaction and fulfillment they experienced upon completion of a wide assortment of structures. My interests are dependent on the likelihood of the architecture of tomorrow; one that is molded by new characteristics of design. Architecture has always been an art, science and a philosophy. As such, I will pursue the art and experiment with the science; determining the successes and failures, opportunities, and shortcomings of what the future of architecture holds; ultimately achieving better architecture for all. Architecture also has a relation between science and technology. I have a desire to explore how science and technology can be used to improve the performance of buildings. Architecture is challenging but I have always enjoyed a challenge. Playing at a professional level of sports, it has taught me how to establish my leadership and commitment to succeed. I wish to expand my knowledge and experience of architecture through the undergraduate program at Syracuse University. Syracuse is the perfect fit for me when it comes to the unique curriculum taught there. I am interested in expanding my knowledge about architecture in the east coast. Syracuse will be the perfect fit in order to accomplish my goals due to its great programs that are offered.
