ASKING THE BIG QUESTIONS

A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

To: headofschool@riverdale.edu Subject: Thank you Dominic, I enjoyed the conversation at yesterday’s meeting about your goals for this year, the kinds of questions that drive everything we do at Riverdale, and the metrics we are developing to chart our success. Our discussion reminded me of a John Stuart Mill quote about the essential role of questioning: “…the only way in which a human being can make some approach to knowing the whole of a subject, is by hearing what can be said about it by persons of every variety of opinion, and studying all modes in which it can be looked at by every character of mind. No wise man ever acquired his wisdom in any mode but this; nor is it in the nature of human intellect to become wise in any other manner.” I look forward to hearing more as the year unfolds. David ---------------------------------David Roberts ’80 Chair, Riverdale Board of Trustees ----------------------------------

At Riverdale, we encourage all community members—trustees, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and students—to ask good questions so that we can continually challenge ourselves to become better learners and better people. In his book, The Global Achievement Gap, Tony Wagner relates that both educators and businesspeople expect young people to be able to ask critical questions. That is why this report celebrates “a year of curiosity” and highlights how good questions can lead us as we continue to reimagine the future of Riverdale with your help and support. We encourage you to ask us questions that challenge us to be the best school we can. Send your questions to headofschool@riverdale.edu. Thank you for all that you do to make this a great school.

Dominic A.A. Randolph Head of School

Great learning begins with great questions

ASKING THE BIG QUESTIONS

How do we help great ideas and leaders grow? What can I do to break down stereotypes? “I’ve worked with the Special Olympics since I was in fifth grade and wanted to encourage other kids to meet some fantastic people—and to question why we even label certain people as disabled,” says Walter Johnsen ’14, who founded the Riverdale Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities Club two years ago. What started with one questioning student is now a high-profile organization. As Walter explains, “the great thing about Riverdale is that if you have an intriguing idea, the administration, faculty, and students really support you.” The club has already organized the largest studentrun assembly in school history, bringing members of the intellectual disabilities community to campus to speak about bullying and the challenges of inclusion.

“When Riverdale students take the lead in challenging the status quo and creating change, I find it exciting, and a privilege, to be able to support their work.”

Club members also hosted the first New York City Friendship Ball, which brought new friends together as equals, and received top honor from Best Buddies International as the Overall Outstanding Promoter Chapter for its efforts, gaining a real life lesson in the process.

How can teachers learn from each other? Which tools will help me bring more to my students? “Riverdale is a magnet for teachers who want to keep learning,” says Ricky Lapidus, newly appointed Director of Learning. “It’s a place that encourages us all to keep questioning and pushing ourselves.”

Riverdale’s support for professional development, including Parent Association grants and endowment support, now totals almost $400,000 a year. The Pedagogy and Technology Workshop is like an educational Masters’ Seminar in content and design: it improves teachers’ professional practice while valuing the wisdom of the participants. “In the past three years, with Dominic Randolph’s encouragement, we’ve helped 26 faculty members bring advanced skills back to the classroom,” says Sean Dagony-Clark, Director of Academic Technology.

10

“Whether you’re interested in technology, team or co-teaching, design thinking, a new curriculum, or reimagining how you perform in the classroom, you get the intellectual, emotional, and financial support you need to succeed,” says Lapidus.

“I believe the most effective way to support Riverdale’s outstanding teachers is through innovative professional development, which is why I endowed the Frankel Family Fellows.” David Frankel ’58

ASKING THE BIG QUESTIONS

How can we teach scientific thinking... in Kindergarten? Where do rivers come from? These Riverdale students are not just playing in the dirt, they’re digging for answers about the Hudson River. It’s all part of a science lesson that began with a Kindergarten field trip to the Little Red Lighthouse near the George Washington Bridge.

main channel, and a tributary, we turned on the hose and watched as our model Hudson flowed through the paths they had created,” explains Kindergarten teacher Jyoti Gopal. “This fun project gave them an opportunity to ask questions and then develop an investigation to find answers.”

The trip sparked a lot of questions: “How do you build a bridge?” “Where does the Hudson come from?” “How does it flow?” “Can we make a miniriver on the playground?” Using the Riverdale campus as an extension of the classroom, students could re-create the entire journey of the Hudson. “The playground became their first laboratory. After the children had dug out the river’s ‘source,’ the

“Each year, Riverdale students win outside recognition and research grants for their scientific studies. The hands-on science education they receive, starting in the youngest grades, is commendable and inspiring.”

How do we help students put all the pieces together? What’s history got to do with me? “In Middle School, we lay the groundwork for asking good questions, for thinking critically, and for figuring out that history is not just one narrative, but many overlapping stories,” explains history teacher Will Bellaimey. “That is why the sixthgrade curriculum is built around New York City, with its incredible diversity of topics and themes.” New York provides a perfect introduction to the concept of interdisciplinary study and the interconnection of ideas. The curriculum includes

spending an entire day in Grand Central talking about industrialization, infrastructure, art history, literature, and even the mathematics of train schedules. Groups are assigned different neighborhoods and students write a guidebook and make presentations about each community’s contributions to New York life and history. For its final project, the students construct a three-dimensional map of all five boroughs, which fills the school’s multi-purpose room—echoing the breadth and depth of all that they’ve learned.

ASKING THE BIG QUESTIONS

What inspires lifelong fluency in the arts? How can I speak the language of music? “Every child in the Lower School participates in a music curriculum dedicated to developing individual musical potential, creativity, performing, and listening skills,” says Lower School Music teacher Monique Buzzarté, adding that “these kinds of positive experiences from an early age help explain why so many Riverdale students elect to continue performing in high school music ensembles, sometimes even forming their own student-run groups.” Another is that Riverdale students are taught by superb working musicians who instill confidence about performance. “The Jazz Ensemble has a huge fan base, and has even been invited to play on tour in Australia in 2014,” says Jason Curry, Middle and Upper School Chair of Music. “Our students have learned how to perform and create, not just

Then, there is the pleasure of listening. Established this year by the King family, the Mark Sutton-Smith ’73 Assembly Concert features a performance by a musician in the Riverdale community or an advanced student studying at a local conservatory.

“Music can change a student’s life, as it did for our friend, the late Mark Sutton-Smith, whose experience at Riverdale inspired him to become a musician and composer.”

REUNION ACHIEVEMENTS FOR CLASSES THAT CELEBRATED A REUNION IN THE 2012-13 SCHOOL YEAR Five-year reunions offer alumni an occasion to celebrate the important role that their Riverdale education and friends continue to play in their lives. It also provides a special opportunity to offer enhanced and appreciative philanthropic support to the school. The classes featured on the right celebrated a reunion during the 20122013 school year. The total shown account for any new gifts and pledges— unrestricted or restricted giving, annual, capital, or endowment giving—made

by classmates in the five years since the beginning of the fiscal year after the class’s last reunion was celebrated. For these reunion classes that five-year period is July 1, 2008–June 30, 2013. (Totals do not include payments made on pledges documented before July 1, 2008.)
