A MESSAGE FROM THE CAMPAIGN C0-CHAIRS
Dear Friends, June 30, 2014 marked both the end of the 2013-2014 fiscal year and the conclusion of the initial two-year quiet phase of Riverdale’s R+ comprehensive capital campaign. As co-chairs of the campaign, we are honored to introduce this year’s Report of Gifts and to provide some context for this historic undertaking, which is in keeping with our long tradition of innovation. The theme of this initiative, which will run through 2019, is “Inspiring Education.” We are delighted to report that even before the start of the more public phase, we have raised nearly 45% of the $100 million campaign goal. This has been secured through annual support, planned gifts, and leadership commitments to financial aid, programmatic and professional development, and improved facilities on both campuses. Thanks to all of the members of our community who are included in the following pages, we are very much on track as we prepare to launch the campaign this fall. For Riverdale to lead, we must build unparalleled learning environments and inspire the very best people—students and teachers alike—to work, live, and thrive. R+ provides an opportunity for each of us to engage with this goal, to stretch our inclination to give back and to work together to make Riverdale an even greater place to learn and teach. Every gift to Riverdale during the seven years of the campaign (from July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2019) counts in our campaign totals. The R+ campaign offers members of our community myriad opportunities to connect with their particular interests. Participation will be the true measure of our success. For many people in the Riverdale community, the most appropriate campaign contribution will be annual gifts in each year of the campaign, at a higher level than in the past whenever possible. In aggregate, Annual Fund gifts will likely comprise the largest share of campaign support. As we close one critical phase of the campaign and enter another, we recognize everyone in the following pages who has already contributed to this endeavor and helped make such tremendous progress in so short a time. Together we are all stewards of Riverdale’s future and, with your continued enthusiasm and commitment, that future will be remarkable. R+ Giving to Riverdale Different expressions with a singular purpose
Engagement and participation are core values that drive our entire community—from the students and faculty who pursue their individual passions to the alumni, parents, family, and friends who generously support Riverdale year after year. This generosity takes many forms. Annual contributions, planned gifts, capital donations, and volunteerism are all expressions of a singular and deep commitment to Riverdale.
“Every gift is meaningful to Riverdale. There is no ‘right’ way to support the school,” explains David Roberts ’80; P’06, ’08, ’12, a Riverdale alumnus and past parent who currently chairs the Board of Trustees. “Our development office encourages participation and helps promote engagement with donors’ specific areas of interest. By highlighting just a few of this year’s many impactful gifts, we seek to inspire new possibilities.” The immediate power of annual giving Annual gifts are put to work immediately to

support programs that are most critical to the school. This year, parents, alumni, and friends of Riverdale contributed nearly $4.5 million, a high percentage of which supported financial aid awards. Herman and Linda Laret P’15 became Riverdale parents just two years ago when their daughter, Jacqueline, matriculated to the Upper School. Since then, they have become enthusiastic contributors to the Annual Fund and Linda has been a particularly effective Parent Fund volunteer. As she explains, “Our daughter’s Riverdale experience has been extraordinary. I enjoy connecting with other parents and discussing how annual gifts are used to benefit today’s students.” Alumni giving honors lifelong connections Riverdale has a lifelong impact on its students, even though time and distance can intervene. In just the past three years, Riverdale has reestablished connections with numerous alumni, and annual giving participation among alumni

GIVING TO RIVERDALE
has increased by more than 35%. Fred Hartmann ’40, who made his first gift to the school this year, explains: “I recently turned 92, and have the time and perspective to look back on what’s influenced me most. Not only do I remember Dr. Hackett’s sermons to this day, I can recall every person who taught me at Riverdale.” Richard Goetz ’63 notes, “Riverdale was always important in my life, even while I spent my career in California. As a financial aid recipient, I felt that my fiftieth reunion year was the right time to make a meaningful scholarship gift. While it was always part of the plan to continue my support, the experience of connecting with my late friends’ children at reunion was a catalyst for me to direct another Annual Fund scholarship in their honor and establish a tribute to them.” Seizing the moment to fund new opportunities Although Annual Fund dollars are used to support new opportunities, often people choose to make restricted gifts that can provide seed money for programs that otherwise might not be funded. This year, an anonymous Riverdale parent saw an opportunity to fund such a specific need: “My daughter received information about a series of recommended SAT prep classes that involved a substantial fee, so I contacted Riverdale about making a gift that would cover the cost for students whose families couldn’t afford it.” Sheila Hicks-Rotella, Director of Financial Aid, assisted in contacting the students and their families and

arranged for the classes. She says, “Gifts like this one allow us to truly level the playing field for families receiving financial aid by helping with ‘extras’ that are offered to all Riverdale students.”
Riverdale strengthens pedagogy through collaborative teaching: two teachers in each Lower School classroom, team-taught project-based learning in Middle School, and interdisciplinary courses designed and taught by multiple faculty in Upper School. Similarly, the Mariposa Foundation is championing a new initiative known as the Delta Program that builds on the fundamentals of a Riverdale education. “With Delta, we are exploring how Riverdale’s character work, so successful with Lower and Middle School students, can be further integrated at the Upper School and beyond,” says Dominic Randolph, Head of School. Claire Bernard ’95, President of the Mariposa Foundation, explains, “We support organizations that have clear direction and visionary leaders. After speaking directly with Dominic about the Delta Program, we believe this is an opportunity to participate in pioneering work.” Planned gifts take a long view While specific designations can be of great value, unrestricted donations are also incredibly meaningful to the school—and planned gifts, in particular, can have a significant impact on Riverdale’s future. Tom Israel P’02, chair of Riverdale’s planned giving committee and trustee emeritus, demonstrates this through his own philanthropy in the form of an unrestricted bequest of retirement assets: “There are many different ways to structure a planned gift that is both beneficial to the donor right now and to the school after the donor dies. Since it is impossible to anticipate Riverdale’s needs when I am no longer here, I have chosen to make my gift unrestricted rather than specify how it should be used.” Capital campaign gifts secure the future of Riverdale June 30, 2014 marked the conclusion of the two-year quiet phase of Riverdale’s seven-year

comprehensive capital campaign. During this period, we raised nearly $45 million, enhancing Riverdale’s commitment to financial aid, programmatic innovation, faculty development, and improved facilities on both campuses. On the River Campus, plans are underway for a new structure to replace the dated Perkins building, creating spaces that more effectively support creativity, community, and active learning. Hill Campus plans include an imaginatively renovated Zambetti Center—with two gyms and an expanded Health and Fitness Center—made possible by the decision to replace our 80-yearold pool (now at the end of its useful life) with a new natatorium in a stand-alone Aquatic Center. Several Riverdale families with a passion for athletics have already made lead gifts toward these projects.
Annual Fund milestones: In the last three years, alumni participation increased 35% and parent participation increased 26%. “In the new Health and Fitness Center, every student will be able to spend more ‘time on task,’ and less time waiting to use equipment. Focused workouts in an enhanced space will allow for a more efficient and effective athletic program, one that will impact over 80% of the students in

the Upper School who play one or more sports. Likewise, the new pool will greatly enhance our swimming program and training for one of our most popular team sports. It will also serve the larger Bronx community, since we open our pool to local schools and groups such as Swim for Life,” explains John Pizzi, Director of Athletics. “All of our children are student athletes. Focusing our campaign gift on the new Health and Fitness Center reflects our family’s interest in both athletics and academics,” say Glenn and Eva Dubin P’15, whose son, Jordan, is captain and quarterback of Riverdale’s football team. Curtis Schenker ’76 and Carolyn Schenker P’13, ’15, ’19 are also committed to supporting students with specific interests and talents. They have designated their campaign gift to support needbased financial aid. “As an alumnus and now as a Riverdale parent, I know what a difference it makes to be part of a community that includes students from a variety of ethnic and economic backgrounds and those who contribute diverse perspectives,” says Curtis Schenker. R+ The Riverdale Campaign: what’s ahead? “As the five-year public phase of the capital campaign begins, we look forward to expanding our reach. The full participation of the Riverdale community is key,” explains Janet Montag P’11, ’13, ’18, one of the campaign co-chairs. “Annual giving will contribute an estimated thirty percent of our campaign totals. For those who have the capacity and inclination to give more, the R+ campaign offers a variety of initiatives to support. We are fortunate that so many of our donors are inspired to invest in areas where their gifts can make a difference. Our family is particularly excited by athletics, while others may be motivated by character education, global studies, or the arts. The R+ campaign has a place for everyone to participate.”
New Hill Campus athletics facilities will include a stateof-the-art natatorium, replacing the school’s current pool, which has reached the end of its useful life, as well as a renovated Health and Fitness Center, a second practice gym, a dedicated weight-training space, and a location for the entire Upper School to convene.
CAMPAIGN GIVING: FACILITIES
“The combination of superb academics and improved facilities, including the new Health and Fitness Center, will make Riverdale a true center of excellence for student athletes throughout the New York area.” Glenn and Eva Dubin P’15 13

REUNION ACHIEVEMENTS FOR CLASSES THAT CELEBRATED A REUNION IN THE 2013-14 SCHOOL YEAR Five-year reunions offer alumni an occasion to celebrate the important role that their Riverdale education and friends continue to play in their lives. It also provides a special opportunity to offer enhanced and appreciative philanthropic support to the school. The classes featured on the right celebrated a reunion during the 20132014 school year. The total shown account for any new gifts and pledges— unrestricted or restricted giving, annual, capital, or endowment giving—made by classmates in the five years since the beginning of the fiscal year after the class’s last reunion was celebrated. For these reunion classes that five-year
period is July 1, 2009–June 30, 2014. (Totals do not include payments made on pledges documented before July 1, 2009.)
