ANNUAL REPORT OF GIFTS 2016-2017

Letter from the Board Chair I’ve spent my career climbing learning curves— from practicing law to being general counsel of a major media company to running a network news division to going on air as a news anchor. I know how important it is to be curious and ask the right questions, which is exactly what Riverdale is teaching. This report focuses on the growth mindset that puts Riverdale, and its students and faculty, ahead of the curve. I hope you will enjoy reading about some of the new programs that you have helped to create through your philanthropic investment. As you will read in more detail in the pages that follow, the 2016-2017 Annual Fund not only exceeded our dollar goal, finishing at a recordbreaking $5.033 million, but also boasted the highest participation rates for alumni (18.8%), faculty/staff (57.4%), and parents (78.1%) in Riverdale history. Also, as of June 30, 2017, which marked the end of year five of the seven-year R+ Campaign, we have raised $75.5 million of our $100 million goal and are on track to finish the campaign having reached our desired funding across all of our priority areas. All of this will make it possible to achieve the ambitious goals that Dominic and his team have set for us; none of it would be possible without you. Thank you for your essential support.

Dear friends, On July 1, I took over as Chair of the Board from David Roberts ’80; P’06, ’08, ’12—a daunting task. For several years I’ve watched David from my position as Vice Chair as he’s shown extraordinary leadership and vision. David’s financial acumen, his ability to see around corners, and his commitment to Riverdale’s core values have made him an ideal partner for Dominic Randolph, our Head of School. Together, they launched the ambitious R+ Campaign, which is transforming our campuses, has expanded our commitment to financial aid, and has done so much to turn Dominic’s educational vision into a shining reality. My new role is made easier because I know that Riverdale will be strong for the generations that follow us thanks to the work of those who came before me. We have the tools to thrive despite tremendous changes in education and society in general. The rapid development of technology and globalization will shape how we live, learn, and work in ways we can’t even anticipate today. Riverdale is preparing its students not just to handle this change, but to thrive in the midst of change. The School’s emphasis on critical thinking, curiosity, and community ensures that Riverdale graduates are ready to realize their full potential, no matter what purpose they choose.

Sincerely,

David Westin P’13, ’20 Chair, Board of Trustees

LEARNING BEGINS WITH PLAY

are now exploring how they might expand this program for fourth and fifth graders next year. “The overall capacity of the Riverdale faculty is amazing— to learn, to take risks, to say ‘here’s a big idea; let’s go for it!’,” notes Duval. “That’s something that has really impressed me in my first year here.”

In the Lower School, play has always been an important focus, but today the role of “playwork” is becoming more intentional. “Play can come off as very loose and effortless, but well-designed roles for play and creativity are actually very effortful,” says James Duval, Head of Lower School. “How are children involved in their natural environment? What tools are available for play? And how do you use them to encourage greater creativity and problem-solving skills? Riverdale is one of only a handful of schools to develop a program that will help our faculty explore these concepts, implement new programs, and better leverage our incredible physical campus.” The Lower School drama program is another Riverdale initiative that is ahead of the curve. Many classes work with the drama team to write original productions that incorporate content and themes being studied across various academic disciplines. Fifth graders continue to explore identity through a new program developed in part by Tim Sacks, Director of Lower School Admission and Dean of Lower School, and Latoya Allen, Associate Director of Lower School Admission and Director of Community Engagement. “In spring 2016, a group of us piloted an advisor program for students transitioning to the Middle School. This year we tackled the topic of identity with the Class of 2024 and were proud to see that students who are about to enter the Middle School are more than ready to lead their own discussions on complicated topics,” said Sacks. A group of teachers and administrators

BRINGING TOGETHER MANY STRANDS OF LEARNING In the Middle and Upper Schools, co-curricular activities blend many components of learning. Kevin Mattingly, Director of Co-Curriculum, works with faculty members to develop real-world experiences that can extend and enrich their academic programs.

ANNUAL REPORT OF GIFTS 2016-2017

“There are two critical factors for students—having a direct experience, and then reflecting and continuing to learn from that experience. In fact, renowned educator John Dewey viewed ongoing reflection as the most beneficial part of a learning experience. Our experiences are never just one-time events. Students are encouraged to use them as jumping-off points for further independent study and group projects,” explains Mattingly. This year, for instance, every twelfth grader taking Integrated Liberal Studies (ILS) observed the work of public defenders in a Manhattan night court as part of a segment on the U.S. justice system. Eleventh-grade Constructing America classes hiked to Kaaterskill Falls to approximate the journey that inspired Thomas Cole and other Hudson River School painters. Each of these experiences resonated in subsequent work, including class discussions, as well as research and writing projects. In one longer-term, on-campus project, students in Melissa Belardi’s applied physics course worked with Josh Merrow in the Riverdale makerspace to build clocks, applying many of the concepts they were learning in the classroom. STUDENTS CREATE THEIR OWN LEARNING CURVES For the last two years, Tal Tenengauzer ’21 has been connecting families from Riverdale’s Part of the Solution Family Club (POTS) to the Big Swim Big Kick event at Asphalt Green (AG). He also organized a School-wide drive and collected sports equipment and gear to be donated to underprivileged athletes who play on AG’s sports teams throughout New York City. “I’ve had to develop my idea, make presentations, recruit students, organize fundraisers, and coordinate with outside groups. My teachers have been incredibly supportive in helping me create this project,” shares Tal. A look at several of this year’s senior projects demonstrates how students have successfully integrated the many building blocks of their Riverdale careers. Zoe Schwartzman ’17 examined urban transformation through the study of one block on Manhattan’s Upper West Side: “I designed my project; researched city regulations; interviewed residents, merchants, and developers; consulted with my advisor; wrote an academic paper; and gave a thirty-minute presentation to students and faculty. Doing a senior project required me to use all the skills I’ve learned at Riverdale.” Aliah Banchik ’17 tackled the nature of learning itself by writing a children’s book that discusses her own experience with dyslexia: “I personified dyslexia as a character who switched letters around or played tricks on my book’s protagonist, whose experience mirrors my own.” Aliah was the guest speaker at this year’s Middle School graduation and her book, My Best Friend Lexi, has been added to the faculty’s recommended summer reading list.

AHEAD OF THE CURVE FACULTY MEMBERS EMBRACE NEW CHALLENGES The list of 2016–2017 Frankel Fellows clearly demonstrates that Riverdale faculty members are enthusiastic lifelong learners and exemplify the behaviors we encourage in our students. The program, funded by David ’58 and Linda Frankel, offers teachers the opportunity to explore areas of personal passion. More than 75 faculty members have participated since the program’s inception in 2013. “Working with my hands brings me peace, develops my creativity and sense of empowerment, and honors my relationship with my carpenter grandfather—it has it all for me,” remarks Tracy Smith, Middle and Upper School Library Coordinator, who chose to study with a master carpenter. Jason Curry, Middle and Upper School Head of the Department of Music, took tennis lessons from a USTA professional. As an avid fan and spectator, he decided it was time to move from passive to active participation in the sport. “Not only was it exhilarating to acquire performance strategies from an expert, but I also saw many parallels to music, especially in the precision, focus, patience, and meditative mind required to do well,” says Curry. STAYING AHEAD OF THE CURVE WHEN CHANGE IS A CERTAINTY “Riverdale taught me how to organize my thoughts in an essay, how to meet deadlines, and how to work hard for something,” explains Robin Pogrebin ’83, now a reporter for The New York Times. “These skills are still invaluable, but today’s graduates also need to be nimble and adapt to rapid change.” When change is a certainty, encouraging critical thinking and a growth mindset is one of Riverdale’s greatest priorities. “If we teach our students to think critically, to ask great questions, and to solve problems creatively, they will be ready for even the steepest learning curves,” notes Randolph. This year, the Garcia Family Foundation recognized Riverdale’s leadership in balancing traditional education with forward-looking strategies when it awarded the School a generous twelve-year grant to support financial aid, with preference given to the children of educators. “We chose to work with Riverdale because it is a school that shares our values and goals,” reveals Renata Garcia. “The minute you walk on campus and meet Dominic and his team, you know that there is something exciting going on at Riverdale,” continues Claudio Garcia. Paul Goldschmid ’96; P’30 brings a dual perspective to the issues of constancy and change, as both an alumnus and the parent of an entering student: “Riverdale taught me to love learning, so I am thrilled that my daughter will be part of this community. I can see already that, although the School’s core values have never wavered, her learning experience will be even more global, focused, and advanced than my own.”

Sixth graders work on a map of New York City

“Riverdale is particularly attuned to looking at each student’s growth and potential, and to supporting independent projects. I have seen this as a Riverdale student, as a parent, and now as a grandparent.” Cathy Schragis Heller ’71; P’96, ’99, ’03; GP’27

REUNION ACHIEVEMENTS FOR CLASSES THAT CELEBRATED A REUNION IN THE 2016–2017 SCHOOL YEAR Five-year reunions offer alumni a chance to celebrate the important role that their Riverdale education and friends continue to play in their lives, and provide a special opportunity to offer enhanced philanthropic support to the School.

The alumni classes featured on the right celebrated a reunion during the 2016–2017 school year. The totals shown account for any new gifts and pledges—unrestricted or restricted annual, capital, or endowment giving— made by classmates in the five years since the beginning of the fiscal year after the class’s last reunion was celebrated (i.e., July 1, 2012–June 30, 2017). Totals do not include payments made on pledges documented before July 1, 2012.
