Letter from the Board Chair Dear friends, In 1907, Riverdale’s founder, Frank Sutliff Hackett, established our school with the goal of creating a well-rounded, yet rigorous education that would guide students to rewarding and purposeful lives. More than a century later, Riverdale remains committed to these core values. In our increasingly interconnected and global world, we believe more than ever that the most effective education will enrich the whole student—developing minds, building character, and creating community—in order to prepare and empower lifelong learners who will change our world for the good. We are fortunate to have alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends who both share in and support these principles. During the fiscal year ending June 30, 2018, we once again exceeded our dollar goal with an astounding $5.05 million raised in Annual Fund support from 2,004 donors—242 of whom were first-time supporters of the School. In addition, our participation rates for alumni (18.8%), parents (77.2%), and faculty/staff (46.1%) remain strong as we look ahead to the final year of the R+ Campaign. To date, we are proud to have raised nearly $85 million toward our ambitious $100 million goal. In the pages that follow, you will find an overview of the four pillars of the R+ Campaign—Annual Fund, Facilities,

Programs/Faculty, and Financial Aid— as well as some of the meaningful Riverdale experiences that are made possible by the generosity of our community to each of these priority areas. There is still work to be done, but it is important to recognize the many accomplishments of our first six years of the R+ Campaign, including an increase of 33.8% in our financial aid budget, the development of numerous immersive global and domestic travel opportunities for our students, the opening of brand-new buildings on both of our campuses, and the award of Frankel Family Fellowships to nearly 1/3 of our faculty members to encourage their pursuit of summer passion projects, among so many others. None of this would be possible without your partnership. Thank you for your commitment and support. Together, we can ensure that Riverdale remains steeped in its rich history and tradition while also developing and employing forward-looking strategies that will give our students the tools to thrive in an ever-changing world. Sincerely,
David Westin P’13,’20 Chair, Board of Trustees

While restricted priorities allow Riverdale to delve deeply into projects and possibilities for the long-term future of the School, Annual Fund donations are essential to securing and cultivating the Riverdale experience immediately, year after year. The R+ Campaign demonstrates the importance of these resources, by promoting Annual Fund support as the largest priority area and ensuring that these current-use funds remain robust as we also focus on restricted support. Riverdale’s Annual Fund supports myriad initiatives including financial aid, faculty and curriculum development, campus and building maintenance, and so much more. This revenue is critical, as it allows our school to maintain an exemplary level of excellence, securing parity among our students’ experiences, allowing administration and faculty to innovate and thrive, and cultivating ambitious projects inside and outside of the classroom.
Vital, flexible, and immediate funding for current operations
Every dollar donated to Riverdale’s Annual Fund between July 1, 2012 and December 31, 2019 goes toward the R+ Campaign—guaranteeing that our entire community has the opportunity to participate and be counted at a level that is meaningful to and appropriate for them.
“I support Riverdale’s continued efforts to produce intelligent, articulate, conscientious young people who go on to make meaningful contributions to their communities and the world around them.” — TONY MELCHIOR ’73
“The significance of Riverdale’s Annual Fund is its flexibility— allowing us to address the School’s most pressing needs while also empowering us to seize new opportunities as they arise. Annual Fund participation demonstrates the commitment of our community in a way that is tangible, inclusive, and heartening.”
“We contribute to Riverdale’s Annual Fund to benefit our children, but also to support the faculty. Our teachers are instrumental in cultivating an environment where children can experiment, learn, and play. Our combined support makes certain that Riverdale can attract and retain distinguished faculty members in all stages and spaces of education.” — ANDREW ’95 AND RACHEL LUSTGARTEN P’29

Riverdale is home to an expansive campus, comprised of 27.5 acres across two distinct locations. These spaces provide sanctuary for our students, a place where they can spread out and make the most of the resources around them. New construction projects are often once-in-a-generation, establishing important structures for decades of students to come. Alternately, the renovation and maintenance of our existing spaces keep them modern, safe, inviting, and useful. The R+ Campaign has allowed Riverdale to create innovative spaces on each campus. The River Campus is now home to the Upper Learning Building, which offers flexible classrooms for grades three through five; a spacious, glass-enclosed cafeteria; a state-of-the-art black box theater; and adaptive learning and community spaces. In addition, the revamped Junior Building boasts modernized administrative and admission suites and a 21st-century Learning Lab with interactive learning tools, such as an augmented reality “sandbox” with applications in math, geography, and Earth science. On the Hill, our new Aquatic Center features a 13,000-square-foot facility and a six-lane, USA-certified pool. Concurrent to the construction of this building, Riverdale renovated the existing Zambetti Athletic Center to include two gyms, an expanded Health and Fitness Center, and a gathering space that can accommodate the entire Upper School student body.
“We contribute to Riverdale’s Lower School Learning Lab because we are inspired by how it transforms words and ideas into real-life experiences that the children can touch, see, and feel.” — KARA AND SCOTT FRIEDMAN P’28
“I take great joy in caring for such a remarkable campus. The best learning happens in inviting and creative spaces—and we couldn’t keep things at such a high standard for our students without support for our facilities.”

“Swimming and the presence of a pool has been an integral part of the Riverdale experience for so long—and I am delighted to help ensure its continued prominence. As I watched Christina ’17 and her Guambo teammates through the years, I saw that same sense of inclusion and spirit and community that we had at Riverdale in my generation.”

CREATING THE RIVERDALE EXPERIENCE TOGETHER
ZEST
The broadest of Riverdale’s campaign priorities, program and faculty support, allows us to create a more informed and multidimensional education for our students. We strive to cultivate a co-curriculum that is deeply experiential and develops intellectual capacities and character skills in every student. It enhances our ability to encourage professional development, independent thinking, and creative ideas among our faculty. In 2014, our Frankel Family Fellows program was established—and, since then, 98 Riverdale faculty members, across all divisions and disciplines, have undertaken personal and professional opportunities that have expanded their capacities and allowed them to inspire students, fellow faculty, and staff.
Pioneering programs and pre-eminent faculty
Thanks to programmatic support, we also are able to continually expand the global and domestic travel experiences available to our students, in addition to identifying ways to connect our trips to further learning in the classroom and new areas for our students to explore. This year alone, 54 Middle and Upper School students participated in trips to Italy, Spain, Russia, Namibia/South Africa, and the Galapagos Islands—while a comparable number undertook travel throughout the United States to locations in Michigan, Louisiana, Alabama, Utah, and Alaska. International fellows, such as Esther Nondi from Mombasa and Dr. Brian O’Steen from New Zealand, have spent weeks at a time in our community, sharing their experience and insights from their home countries.
“Riverdale’s teachers and faculty go to tremendous lengths to support our children, and we want to support their continued ability to innovate and inspire.” — KAYSER AND KEIKO STRAUSS P’27,’30
“Our support helps Riverdale provide an education that is deeply experiential, instills character learning in every Riverdale student, and secures the School’s reputation as a model of academic excellence.”
“I am heartened that Riverdale and Dominic Randolph persist in the pursuit of a global community, as Frank Hackett intended, and am pleased to support the School’s efforts to deepen its students’ cultural understanding through the advancement of a global studies program that engages international faculty on campus and sends students into the world for immersive experiences.” — TIM ZAGAT ’57

Financial Aid 8
CREATING THE RIVERDALE EXPERIENCE TOGETHER
Riverdale’s commitment to supporting exceptional students, regardless of economic capacity, is among the most meaningful of the R+ Campaign priorities. Our robust and ever-increasing financial aid program allows us to attract and admit highly qualified students with diverse talents, interests, and backgrounds, ensuring that our student body is representative and inclusive of communities throughout New York City and beyond. Indeed, tuition covers only a portion of the Riverdale experience. Co-curricular programming is essential to developing our students’ unique potential and shaping their character. Riverdale’s “extras” fund helps to lessen the burden of expenses that are often just as challenging as tuition for many families, allowing more opportunity for parity among peers. These vital resources ensure that students can join their friends and classmates for global and domestic travel, engage in summer study programs, take private music lessons, and receive SAT prep or visit colleges as they plan for the next stage of their education.
“Three generations of my family have benefited from a superb Riverdale education that has prepared us well to face future challenges. I support scholarship at the School because it is of paramount importance to me to help enable all students to have similarly formative experiences.” — LINDA LEWIS LINDENBAUM ’54; P’77,’81; GP’05,’07,’11,’15,’19,’20
“I have the great fortune to work closely with so many students representing a variety of talents, interests, and backgrounds. Financial aid at Riverdale provides them with equitable opportunities, both on and off campus, and access to develop their passions and pursue roles as leaders, innovators, citizens, and changemakers.” — SHEILA HICKS-ROTELLA Director of Financial Aid
