Riverdale

Riverdale by the numbers As we teach our students to think both critically and creatively, it is certain that they will have to read closely, engage in debate, ask good questions, and write persuasively. They have to understand how to use language well. But they will also have to learn the language of numbers and develop as quantitative reasoners. Students must realize that numeracy is much broader than learning multiplication tables; it is yet another way of telling stories. Numbers are present in our science labs, in our art studios, in our history classrooms, and even in our service learning programs.

AP COURSES OFFERED At Riverdale we emphasize critical and creative thinking skills. Our classes teach students how to learn and ask questions, not just to memorize facts and figures for a test. We have a long-standing commitment to interdisciplinary study and are continuing to develop courses that involve more discussion-based learning, more experiential learning, and more stimulating and meaningful learning.

students participated in last year’s RCS D.E.S.I.G.N. program for 9th graders

Riverdale’s Upper School encourages students to think about and create their own stories. They do this by exploring and cultivating their academic interests but also by finding interests and activities that they enjoy doing outside of the traditional academic setting. It is important for

9th grade students to have some time to adjust to the life of the Upper School before figuring out how they will participate in the community. It’s hard to decide which activities to do when students haven’t had any time to think about what they are interested in, what they are good at, and what’s

important or relevant to them. Through a series of guided exercises that involve exploration of one’s character strengths, an introduction to design thinking, and selfreflection, the RCS D.E.S.I.G.N. program assists students in planning their journeys through the Upper School.
