WELCOME ST. LOUIS LGBTQIA+ COMMUNITY, The Pride St. Louis Board of Directors is extremely excited to have you join us in celebrating PrideFest 2016. This year marks our 37th annual PrideFest. We would like to thank our Presenting Sponsors: MasterCard, Monsanto, and Bud Light. In addition we’re proud to welcome Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals as our newest Presenting Sponsor. These companies, along with our many other valued and dedicated sponsors, truly help to make our annual St. Louis festival a success. Pride St. Louis made tremendous strides towards empowering our community, and as part of this continuous fight for equality the theme for PrideFest 2016 is Solidarity Through Pride. We chose this theme to represent the daily struggles that our community faces. Whether it is sexual orientation or gender inequality, racial inequality, or the many issues of discrimination that we all face, Solidarity Through Pride seeks to break down these barriers so that we can someday reach equal rights for all citizens.

As Pride St. Louis and our supporters kick off this celebration of Solidarity Through Pride we would like to extend our deepest thanks to our countless volunteers, our city leaders, and Corporate Sponsors for helping to produce one of the largest free PrideFest in the nation. Without these valuable people dedicated to uplifting our community this celebration of equality would not be possible. For all their time and effort we are eternally grateful. Thank you for joining us at PrideFest 2016 and for participating in the celebration of our LGBTQIA+ Community with Solidarity Through Pride. We are so proud you are here! Yours in Pride,

THE JIM HOEFER AWARD: Metro Trans Umbrella Group The Jim Hoefer Award is presented to an organization that best exemplifies what it means to serve St. Louis’ LGBT Community Following St. Louis PrideFest 2013, it was very apparent to trans leaders and activists that there was a critical need for a larger trans presence and concomitant more empowered trans leadership. After much passionate discussion, in July of 2013, a small group of local trans and gender non-conforming (GNC) organizers pooled hopes and desires for a greater Metro Trans community, and The Metro Trans Umbrella Group or MTUG was formed. Originally a meet up group that did both advocacy and visibility, MTUG quickly grew to greater capabilities and capacity, partnering with the Locker Room trans masculine support group and the Powder Room trans feminine support group from the old LGBT Center of St. Louis (now known as FemSpec), adding its own Facebook page, website, and later Twitter and Instagram. A cornerstone of the work MTUG does is its cultural competency regarding supporting GNC and trans people. In 2014, MTUG added an additional support group. The Expression Spectrum is a support group for trans identified, non-binary people, QT Ability for queer trans folks who identify as having a disability . MTUG is its own 501c3 status non-profit and the only non-profit in the Metro Area specifically run by trans folks dedicated to serving and building power for transgender individuals. MTUG also gives back to the community by sponsoring the Missouri GSA Network, Queer & Trans People of Color St. Louis, and maintaining the first-in-the-nation Transgender Memorial Garden in the Grove.

THE CHUCK CHARLESTON AWARD: Lauren Rapp The Chuck Charleston Award is presented to a former member of Pride St. Louis who has dedicated themselves and extraordinary amount of energy to ensuring that the Pride movement is further strengthened through their work both in the community and certainly on behalf of Pride St. Louis. Lauren Rapp served on the board of Pride St. Louis from 2008-2012, but her involvement in the organization began well before that time. According to Lauren, it started on a fateful Sunday in 2007 when she met CJ Saenz, then President of the organization. Lauren was drawn to his enthusiasm and (sometimes super) big ideas. She assisted in producing a regional Pride conference and was hooked. In 2008, Lauren won the title of Ms. Pride. This new opportunity to engage with the board spurred her interest to join. Once on the board, Lauren found her niche in Community Engagement. She saw PSL as an organization that could serve to connect people from around the community, the state, and the region. One of her first efforts was to revitalize the lapsed children’s area. After this initial success, she set her sights on bringing together all sectors of the community with the Unity Plaza. These efforts have been expanded and continue to thrive at PrideFest. Outside of the festival, Lauren looked to develop year-round opportunities to engage with the community. She planned several trivia nights in conjunction with community non-profit partners and established the popular Pride Idol event. Since leaving the board, Lauren has earned her Masters in Non-profit Management, which was influenced by her time as a PSL board member. She enjoys marching in the PrideFest Grand Parade with the Band Together Color Guard and relishes being one of the first faces vendors see when entering festival grounds.

THE LISA WAGAMAN LIFETIME COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD: Dennis Gorg The Lisa Wagaman Lifetime Community Service Award is presented to an individual who has spent much of their life to further the pride movement and LGBT causes. St. Louis native Dennis Gorg had the unique opportunity to begin managing events early on. One of his first big breaks was being hired by Rev. Jesse Jackson to handle his personal logistics and communications as part of Jackson’s 1988 presidential campaign. After forming his own events management company, Integrated Marketing Solutions, Dennis quickly became known world-wide for producing complicated, large scale public events, national marketing, and sponsorship programs. Some of his credits include growing AOL from 1 million members to over 12 million by creating their “Disk Bounty program”, The Pori Jazz Festival in Finland, USA Olympic Torch Relay, Bill Clinton’s Presidential Campaigns, The Phish New Year’s Eve Celebration, Earth Day on The Mall in Washington DC, Paul McCartney’s World Tour, handling crisis management for the past six Democratic National Conventions, and the past 30 years of Farm Aid concert events. Dennis is the proud owner of Coffee Cartel, West End Tan, and Tahaa’ Twisted Tiki and produces Halloween in the CWE and Midtown Taste Art Fair. Dennis’ work within the LGBTQIA+ community includes serving on the Board of Directors for St. Louis Effort for AIDS, Pride St. Louis, and The Millennium March on Washington for Equality, in addition to serving on countless committees. Through his businesses and personally, Dennis continues to sponsor, fund, and support a myriad of LGBTQIA+ events and projects including PROMO, the AIDS Quilt, Doorways, Growing American Youth, The ACLU, GLSEN, Team St. Louis, PFLAG, PAWS, EFA, AIDS Walk, North American Gay Volleyball Association, QFest, Black Pride, MEPSI, Pride St. Charles, MTUG, Southern Poverty Law Center, It Gets Better, and The Trevor Project.

THE FELTON T. DAY AWARD: Andrew Shaughnessy The Felton T. Day Community Service Award is presented to a person – not associated with Pride St. Louis – whose service to the LGBTQIA+ community has gone above and beyond, exemplifying the spirit of leadership and service in one’s community. Andrew Shaughnessy is a campaigner, human rights activist, community organizer, and public policy advocate who has worked both here and abroad to further the equality movement. The Ste. Genevieve, MO native holds his B.A. in Philosophy from Missouri State University and his Masters in Human Rights from the School of Public Policy at University College London. Andrew started at PROMO in 2010 as St. Louis and Southeast Missouri Regional Field Organizer. Having successfully gained LGBT nondiscrimination protections in 9 Missouri municipalities, he moved positions to Senior Field Organizer for the statewide LGBT equality organization, and later served as Manager of Public Policy for PROMO Fund. During his tenure as Manager, Andrew worked alongside many LGBT and ally Missourians to include 125 LGBT welcoming policies in 53 Missouri hospitals, guidance from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services in recognizing same-sex married lesbians on their children’s birth certificates, helping to put an end to transgender exclusions in health insurance for Missourians, recognition of same-sex Missouri marriage licenses for spouse benefits with the United States Social Security Administration, and much more. Andrew accepted a position with the Missouri Foundation for Health in February 2016 as a Health Policy Officer for their expanding coverage mission. He is thrilled to continue to work on improving the health of Missourians, especially in gaining access to health care insurance. When Andrew isn’t working, he enjoys reading, writing, and traveling. He loves anything that involves the outdoors and tries to get himself to the theatre and symphony as often as possible. For expanded content check out www.boom.lgbt pridestl.org

HAVANA BROWN

JOHNATHAN CELESTIN

SAT. 6/25, 6:45 PM Bud Light Entertainment Stage

SAT. 6/25, 4:30 PM Bud Light Entertainment Stage

Havana Brown is an Australian DJ, singer, songwriter and producer. Wildly popular “down under,” Brown has had the opportunity to perform alongside legends like Britney Spears and Lady Gaga. And with the U.S. release of “We Run the Night (Feat. Pitbull),” which sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide, Havana Brown took the U.S. by storm. Brown’s stop in St. Louis for PrideFest will be her first time in our city, but not her first time at Pride. “I actually performed at Great America’s Pride night a few years ago with Iggy Azalea, Wynter Gordon and The Village People in the Bay Area,” she said of her first Pride performance. Brown loved the energy and seeing everybody get into the spirit of Pride at that first performance, so it’s no wonder she has decided to join Pride again, and in the city of St. Louis this time.

Indie artist Johnathan Celestin is excited to be making his St. Louis PrideFest debut on the Bud Light Entertainment Stage and hopes to take audiences on a journey. “The last year of my live shows has really been tailored around love lost and love reclaimed and pretty much leading the audience to be uplifted,” said Celestin. “So I’m really excited to be doing that in St. Louis and with the St. Louis LGBT community. So yeah, I’m really excited to be hitting the stage.” The “Be-You-tiful” singer plans a journey of covers, singles from his debut EP “...and Then the Rolling Stone Fell in Love,” as well as some new music, including “Quicksand” and “One in a Million in Love.” The soulful crooner, who is presently in the middle of his “Unbreakable Love Tour” adds that he particularly loves performing for Pride audiences.

“You can’t go wrong performing at Pride, the energy and people are always amazing,” said Brown. “This will be my first visit to St Louis and I’m so excited to get there and perform at PrideFest. I’ve heard so many great things about the city and looking forward to the festival.”

“I don’t really know that I can compare it,” explained Celestin. “I’ve done lots of shows and there’s just a common thread in terms of the community that I find in crowds of people. And that universal blood of humanity that I see within every crowd is what I attach to when I’m on stage and that’s what keeps me fueled while I’m on stage and keeps me really up and tuned and passionate while I’m up there, if that makes sense.”

Since she began he career, Brown has aimed to release her own music as a DJ/Singer, something that is not seen very often in the industry. What’s more, the journey to achieving this goal has taught her a lot about herself and what Pride means to her.

“Just being comfortable loving people - that’s what I take pride in,” added Celestin. “It’s kind of apropos to do gay Pride and LGBT Pride shows with people being comfortable with the many different ways they can love and that’s what I take pride in.”

“To me [pride] is acceptance of who you truly are and how you choose to represent yourself inside and out, being proud of your true self,” she said. For expanded content check out www.boom.lgbt 14 I DUE I D 2 0E1 62 0 pridestl.org 28 P PR IRDIED GEU G 1 6 pridestl.org

SAT. 6/25, 8:00 PM Bud Light Entertainment Stage

SUN. 6/26, 4:00 PM Bud Light Entertainment Stage

Jordin Sparks is best known for winning season 6 of American Idol and is a singersongwriter, Grammy Award nominee and the youngest winner of the aforementioned world reality show. By selling over 1 million albums and more than 10 million singles in the United States alone, Sparks is one of the most successful Idol contestants of all time. Sparks won Idol at 17, and in the same year, released her first album, which went platinum and sold over two million copies. One of the tracks from her debut album, “No Air,” resulted in Sparks’ nomination for a Grammy Award. Throughout her career she has received many awards, including a People’s Choice Award, two Teen Choice Awards, an NAACP Image Award and a BET Award. Sparks is no stranger to the Pride Circuit and has been a public supporter of the LGBTQIA+ community. In 2011 she collaborated with Whitney Houston on the song “Celebrate.” When asked by Pride Source about its significance to the LGBTQIA+ community, Sparks said that it’s “about loving each other and celebrating each other” . “I didn’t know as many (gay people),” Sparks continued to Pride Source. “But I did drama club, and the head of my drama club in the ninth grade - his name was Eric and on the weekends he was Sapphire St. Regis, and he was so amazing! He was the president of the drama club, and so talented and so fun. Then I did community theater, and that introduced me to more. I have some (gay) family members as well, so I’ve always been used to it.”

The breakthrough pop/hip-hop duo Karmin, comprised of recently married Amy Heidemann and Nick Noonan are excited to be hitting the Bud Light Entertainment Stage at PrideFest St. Louis. “We have a lot of shit in store, said Nick. “We have an amazing show. We think it’s a ton of energy, it’s a little bit more of like a Rock ‘n’ Roll than it is necessarily a pure pop show. It’s a lot of Amy doing her thing that’s for sure.” Known for popular covers such as “Look at Me Now”, “Super Bass”, and “Party Rock Anthem”, the duo signed with Epic Records and released their debut EP Hello in 2012 spawning such hits “Brokenhearted” and “Hello.” Now newly independent artists, Nick and Amy are preparing to drop their sophomore offering Leo Rising this summer. “We’re independent artists now, so we have a lot more freedom creatively and also with the timing of everything, right,” said Amy. “So it used to be with a major label, like: ‘Push this single and if it doesn’t work in four weeks you’ve got to move on.’ It was much more scheduled but now we’re a little more organic with our sound and the way we let our fans discover it.” Karmin is no strangers to the Pride Circuit and in fact, it’s their favorite gig to perform. “It’s been fun seeing other city’s Pride celebrations grow in size and grandeur, because I know a lot of them started small and built up,” offered Amy. “So it’s been awesome to see some of the smaller celebrations.” “You have to be proud in your own skin of who you actually are,” added Nick.

Massie earned a loyal LGBT following early in her career and is one of the most recognizable vocalists in the Midwest. The truth is - whether it be blues, rock, pop, country, gospel or R&B – there is little the singer hasn’t mastered for her vocal arsenal. “I have a passion for what I do, I love what I do and I love music so I don’t let that limit me,” Massie told #Boom Magazine. “...When you come to my show you’re going to get a little bit of everything because there is a multitude of different folk out there and some may not just like blues or jazz.” Massie has been a longtime supporter of Pride St. Louis, performing at festival and other events. In fact, the diva feels a real kinship with her LGBT audience. “Being out there and seeing the diversity – just like I want to be appreciated for who and what I am – so do they,” she went on to tell #Boom. “I’ve been a big woman all my life and there’s a stereotype there. So I’m among folks who I am sure have been looked upon for this, that, or the other and it’s too bad we still have to deal with that but I think little by little we’re changing things and those stereotypes.”

Melanie Martinez closes out PrideFest 2016 with the final performance on the Bud Light Entertainment Stage. A breakout contestant on Season 3 of The Voice, Martinez later signed with Atlantic Records. Her debut album, Crybaby, produced the Top 10 hit “Pity Party,” and helped launch her career, and she is equally known for her single “Carousel”, which was featured on season three of American Horror Story. “I’ve always felt like I was a cry baby,” Melanie said. “I’m so emotional and I take things very personally, and I’ve been made fun of for that. The name has stuck with me. This album is me figuring out how to embrace being imperfect and accepting the things I can’t change about myself, and being happy and comfortable with who I am. In the beginning, when I started writing, I was insecure. As the album went on I got more comfortable with myself. It’s interesting because what happens to my character also happened to me through the writing process of the album.” Post The Voice, Martinez set to work on developing independent, original material. She released her debut single, “Dollhouse” in 2014, along with a successful music video. The hit currently has over 45 million views as of May 2016. “Cry Baby is me,” Martinez told Billboard. “It’s kind of hard for me to let go of a character that really isn’t a character, you know? I’m still figuring it out. The couple of songs that I’ve written for my next album -- if I was to stick with the Cry Baby character, I could definitely continue the story in some way.”

Canadian native Shawn Hook has enjoyed great success as a musician at home, and earlier this year released “Sound of Your Heart,” in the U.S. The song, already platinum in Canada, received a huge response and Hook’s following is now international. “I was always considered a domestic artist in Canada, but the success of ‘Sound of Your Heart’ has changed that perception and I’m excited to put out my next single,” said Hook. Hook is currently working on his next album, which he hopes will continue to show the evolution of his music. He also hopes that his next tour can incorporate his charity, Live to Give, which holds events to raise money or canned food for those in need. “Our goal is to help those in need,” Hook said, “My goal is to take it to the next level and incorporate it into my next tour. For now, it’s on hold until I finish my new album.” St. Louis PrideFest will be Shawn Hook’s first-ever Pride appearance. Hook said that he is doing the Pride Circuit this summer, also performing at Nashville’s 2016 PrideFest, because, “I love the energy and I love what Pride stands for.” “One of the beautiful things about music is that it is a universal language,” he explained. “Regardless of gender, religion, race or sexual orientation music transcends and brings people together. I’m proud to make music that brings people together and it inspires me to continue.”

2016 PRIDE PARADE GRAND MARSHALS: “THE MIGHTY EIGHT” Pride St. Louis is pleased to honor the members of the Democratic caucus of the Missouri Senate as this year’s Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals Grand Pride Parade Grand Marshals. State Senators Maria Chapelle-Nadal, Shalonn “Kiki” Curls, Jason Holsman, Joseph Keaveny, Jamilah Nasheed, Jill Schupp, Scott Sifton and Gina Walsh wielded the national media’s attention with their herculean and record-breaking 39 hour filibuster of Senate Joint Resolution 39. The “religious freedom” legislation would have asked voters to amend Missouri’s constitution to protect certain individuals and businesses who cite religious beliefs to deny service to same-sex couples. While the legislation ultimately passed the Senate by a vote of 21-11, the “Mighty Eight’s” efforts prepared the ground for the House Emerging Issues Committee to kill the legislation with a 6-6 bipartisan vote on April 27. Please join us in honoring these true Missouri heroes and equality advocates!

TIM WILLIAMS,

LISA MANDEL,

MPPA (he, him, his) Lead Certified Application Counselor & Organizer

(She, her, hers) Volunteer & Story Teller for Planned Parenthood

How do you show your pride?

How do you show your pride?

By being “out” every single day of my life for the past 35 years.

I show my pride by unapologetically being my authentic self everyday.

Why did you choose PP and how was your experience? I chose PP for several reasons. First, I knew they had a sliding scale fee and I didn’t have much money. Second, I knew it was a safe space, and last, I like the idea that mostly women that work there and sometimes it’s a lot easier to talk to a nurse practioner ( NP). My experience was very positive. When I first filled out forms, they were very heterosexually oriented and I would write LESBIAN across the page. The nurse asked for my input to help change the forms. She was the same woman that discovered a goiter in my neck upon an exam, ot just a pap smear but a physical – she was my “doc” for many years.

How do you think PP helps the LGBTQ community? PP provides a safe space for anyone and everyone. No judgment.

WE

STAND PROUD

How do you advocate for the LGBTQ community in your work for Planned Parenthood? In my work for Planned Parenthood, I advocate for the LGBTQ community by highlighting the changes that are happening within the health care system. I continually inform members of the LGBTQ community of their rights under the ACA, including new non-discrimination protections and access to preventative care.

What is your favorite part about the Planned Parenthood booth at Pride? Pride is one of our more rewarding events because people come up to celebrate their individual pride in two ways: for the LGBTQ community and for Planned Parenthood. It’s incredibly rewarding to hear our supporter’s stories and how Planned Parenthood has affected their lives for the better.

We’ve got you covered—with or without insurance. Schedule your next appointment online! pridestl.org

COMMUNITY PROUD IN TRIBUTE WILL ROTH (1947-2016)

- COLIN MURPHY William Carl “Uncle Will” Roth left us on Jan. 8, 2016 and our community, while poorer for his loss, is the beneficiary of a life well lived. Will loved politics and was unabashedly proDemocrat, pro-labor and his work within the LGBT community was prolific. What’s more, he did it with an irreverent charm and infectious energy while triumphing over a lifetime of ailments. Born in 1947, Will grew up in a close-knit family living in suburban St. Louis with his parents and sisters. He came out as a gay man shortly after graduating college and quickly became a vocal activist around liberal causes, particularly labor and LGBT issues. Following retirement from Dierbergs in 2006, he redoubled his efforts. Through volunteer and financial support, he backed myriad St. Louis LGBT organizations, including PROMO, Pride St. Louis, The Gateway Men’s Chorus, the local chapter of the Human Rights Campaign, SAGE, Prime Timers, the Gateway Stonewall Democrats, The LGBT Center, and many more.

“Well, we’ve come a long way, from being an isolated society to [an] out society where everybody can see us at various events and so on. And we’re going to demand our rights as citizens of the country, the state, the city, the county. We’re visible where we used to be invisible, where we used to just patronize gay-oriented clubs and pretty much were invisible after that. I think we’ve come a long way. I would hope to see some things like non-discrimination ordinances passed. I’d like to see civil unions passed in various states—in all the states. I’d like to see a federal law for marriage equality. I hope I see it in my lifetime.”

In 2010, Will sat down with the St. Louis LGBT History Project’s Ian Darnell for an in-depth oral history. The document serves as a living record of his life and thoughts on the St. Louis LGBT community:

“It gives me a sense of accomplishment and involvement, putting my efforts towards a successful effort to improve our lives through legislation, which is really where our rights are going to come from ultimately […].” For expanded content check out www.boom.lgbt 42

COMMUNITY PROUD IN TRIBUTE NORMA STERN (1927-2016)

- COLIN MURPHY Norma Stern was a staunch supporter of HIV/AIDS causes and charities and an elegant ally and friend to the LGBT community. She departed this life on March 15, 2016 at the age of 89. Norma was a major force in the St. Louis community. With her mien, keenness and indefatigable energy, she devoted her life to health concerns, education and welfare of the underserved and ailing. The defining moment in her life came when she survived burns over 50 percent of her body during a fire at the family business. “She always just embraced everyone. She didn’t know a stranger and was very inclusive and certainly the life of the party kind of thing,” recalled longtime friend Greg Lukeman, the former Executive Director of Food Outreach. “She was always so generous with auction items for Food Outreach as well as for A Tasteful Affair.” Norma was the first Chairperson of Doorways’ Red, the annual fundraiser benefiting the interfaith non-profit organization which provides housing and related supportive services to improve quality of life and health outcomes for people affected by HIV/ AIDS. The recipient of a multitude of awards and accolades, she was a recipient the Lifetime Achievement Award from The AIDS Foundation of St. Louis.

“She just wanted everybody to be happy and to be able to love who they wanted to love and have that acknowledged.” Known for her signature shock of silver hair and elegant style, Norma was indeed the life of the party.

“She was an early supporter of marriage equality,” added Lukeman. For expanded content check out www.boom.lgbt 46

COMMUNITY PROUD QUEER AND TRANS PEOPLE OF COLOR: STL Queer and Trans People of Color (QTPOC): STL is a brave space for queer and trans people of color in the St. Louis Metro area. QTPOC:STL started in September 2014 by Eli Chi and Christine Dolan as a support group for people who self-identified as queer and/ or trans and people of color. QTPOC:STL was founded under the Metro Trans Umbrella Group (MTUG) a grassroots organization for and by trans people in the St. Louis, which still acts as QTPOC:STL’s parent organization. Chi and Dolan created QTPOC:STL with the mission of uplifting and empowering the QTPOC community of St. Louis. “I, a black non-binary boi, was drawn to this space because of a need to find people like me. One of Queer and Trans People of Color: St. Louis co-founders sent me a Facebook invite to a QTPOC:STL meet up. I was so excited to be around beautiful black and brown queer and trans people who shared many of my same feelings. After the first meeting, I knew I had found the community I needed to survive. After three months, I joined QTPOC:STL’s leadership committee alongside LadyAshley Gregory, KB Frazier, Eli Chi, and Ashton Beck. I joined the leadership committee because I wanted to make sure other QTPOC found the community and healing I have, and continue to receive, through this support group. “ –Jae Shepherd

University. The Midwest QIPOC was created to ensure vital space is held for QIPOC Communities in the Midwest to access and share their voices, lived experience, and stories. The conference organizers met twice monthly, to include holding fundraiser events in collaboration with Lilly’s Social House and Saint Louis Lady Arm Wrestlers, to make sure this conference was a success. And it was! Over 150 QIPOC community members formed new relationships, a deeper understanding of self, and had a great time attending the three-day conference. QTPOC:STL support group takes place every third Thursday of the month at St. Johns Episcopal on Arsenal. We look forward to more programs, events, helping build power, and family for queer and trans people of color in St. Louis. Email us at: qtpocstl@gmail.com Follow us on facebook at: www.facebook.com/qtpocstl/

Together we stand on a journey through our lives as Queer and Transgender People of Color in St. Louis. We strive to gain equality, accessibility, justice, compassion, understanding, and a brave space for all those who identify as QTPOC in St. Louis. As we strive to become more united as a family in our struggle to be heard, recognized, and appreciated, we are learning, leading, and serving our community as we pave the way for those who shall follow in our footsteps. This past April, QTPOC:STL and WashU’s People Like Us (PLUS+) hosted the second annual Midwest Queer Indigenous and People of Color (QIPOC) Conference at Washington

COMMUNITY PROUD THE METRO TRANS UMBRELLA GROUP OF ST. LOUIS The Metro Trans Umbrella Group of St. Louis, MTUG, was formed in 2013 by Trans people for Trans people to foster community, educate the majority on who we are, advocate for equality, and demonstrate through visibility. Our all-volunteer organization builds community through our support groups, our Town Halls, and our increasing working relationships with other community service and advocacy groups. We educate through our robust Trans 101-103 trainings and presentations. We advocate for equality through our own testimony and through collaboration with PROMO, NCTE, Pride STL, and many other organizations. We grow visibility by getting and being out in our communities and doing the work. But what really motivates us? What makes us want, NEED to change our world? I’ll leave you with these statistics as answers to those questions They tried to bury us. They didn’t know we were seeds. - Dinos Christianopoulos If you’re reading this you’re at PrideFest or have just come from PrideFest or you’re digging this out of an old canvas bag several years from now revisiting PrideFest 2016. And if you’re doing that today, you’re probably happy. Maybe a little tired. Possibly a little drunk or hungover. If you’re the you who’s digging this out of a canvas bag in the future, you’re probably one of those people who likes to reminisce. You’re probably feeling kind of nostalgic for the celebration. And that’s what modern PrideFest and the LGBT Pride Parade is - it’s a celebration. A huge one. It’s a time to connect and reconnect with our Queer family. Today (or that day in the past when you packed that canvas bag) you shared space with thousands of Queer people and listened to music. You had a good time. But our Queer family isn’t suspended in amber. Our friends, lovers, parents and siblings go about the task of living day to day, shaping a community that is only as strong as its members. Our community is dynamic, beautiful, messy - sometimes ugly - but always lovable; and its members - all of us - are in constant motion. So let’s talk about tomorrow. As liberating and freeing as transition can be, tomorrow, transgender people will still face a sobering landscape. We do love. We do have dreams, We are capable. We are beautiful. But the statistics you see to the right affect us all - and most especially trans women of color. Tomorrow, whether you are transgender or not, you’ll get up and go to school or work or spend time with your friends or family and you will have a chance and a choice. 56

PRIDE GUIDE 2016

pridestl.org

Here is your chance: For the first time in St. Louis history, the transgender community has organized into a compassionate, powerful group led by trans people with the mission of bringing together the community of trans, gender queer, androgynoous, intersex and allies through community, visibility, advocacy and education. The Metro Trans Umbrella Group (MTUG) provides Trans 101 sensitivity trainings to businesses, schools, churches and just about any other group you can think of. Each session is presented by a group of volunteers fully trained and vetted by the core group of board members. We cover everything from the basics to advanced sensitiivity training. We start where you are. MTUG hosts several support groups. Whether you’re struggling with your identity, looking for friendship, searching for a way to plug into the movement, or seeking affirmation and support for family members and friends of trans people, you are welcome here. MTUG fosters leadership by holding monthly Trans Town Hall Meetings, which are open to anyone and everyone. We know our organization is made stronger when communication is healthy. MTUG partners with PROMO, PRIDE St. Louis and other local advocacy groups to educate the public about hateful and destructive laws targeting not only trans people, but butch lesbians and androgynous cisgender men. We also partner with Queer and Trans People of Color (QTPOC) to amplify the voices of people of color fighting to end systemic racism.

MTUG’s latest project, The Transgender Memorial Garden (www.transmemorialgarden.wordpress.com) is the first of its kind in the United States. Created in October 2015, it is a place where we can celebrate the lives we live together and mourn the deaths of our trans family members. Anyone is welcome to volunteer or donate money, plants and equipment. And we’re not stopping there. We plan to open The Umbrella Center - a physical location open to all, but focused on the needs of those who are least served in the LGBT community. As you can see from the statistics, transgender people are the most at-risk population in need of the most resources. The Umbrella Center will provide those services. We hope to provide a drop-in center for those looking for basic health-care services, clothing, food, computer access, resume building and job search help, office and meeting space and so, so much more. Ambitious? Yes. But we see the chance to make a change in our community and we’re taking it. Here is your choice: Make no mistake; our community must survive the very real attacks on it by those who would make our bodies illegal. Sometimes support and compassion are just as important as national politics. Sometimes that is what is needed. Sometimes taking the hand of the person next to you and seeing them - honoring who they are - is a revolutionary act. You have the chance to do that by contributing time, skill and or money to The Metro Trans Umbrella Group.

Will you?

COMMUNITY PROUD STONEWALL WAS A RIOT - STEPHEN HOULDSWORTH The Stonewall Uprising was a riot (actually six days of rioting and protests) in response to decades of police harassment and abuse of our community. Bottles were thrown, police cars were overturned, roads were blocked, and fires burned. Stonewall was not the first protest against LGBTQIA oppression. Stonewall was not even the first violent protest by our community. But, Stonewall became a symbol, a rallying point, to demarcate a change in the paradigm of what it meant to be LGBTQ in our society. There is a phrase often used by the comfortable in our society, “Violence is never the answer.” And, of course, the Stonewall riots were not the answer to all of the problems we faced as a community, but the riots did bring a lot of attention to those problems and sparked a whole new set of possible answers. On the first anniversary of the Stonewall riots, the 1970 Gay Liberation Day parade adopted the official chant, “Say it clear, say it loud. Gay is good, gay is proud,” and the era of Gay Pride was born. Pride month is an excellent time to remember the important role that protest has had in the history of LGBTQIA liberation, and the vital role it continues to have today. While change can come through legislation, court cases, and changes in the policies of private organizations, each of these strategies for change have depended on earlier protests that raised the visibility of the issues. Silent vigils, violent uprisings, individual acts of protest, and massive national marches, for example, have been tactics used by our movement to challenge heteronormativity and create space for new approaches. Again and again in the history of our movement, though, as each step has taken us closer to full equality and inclusion, there have been those who have wanted to distance themselves from the messy struggle that has gotten us this far. In order to understand the importance of protest, we must look at the systems in which protests happen. All systems are designed to support and defend the status quo. Employing only the tools available within the system is not enough to dismantle the system, because the system’s structures are themselves oppressive. Or, more succinctly, as Audre Lorde said, “The master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s

house.” Protest occurs outside of these systems. It points out the ways the system is oppressive when the internal mechanisms for reform within the system are not enough. Sometimes, we have to work outside the system to change that paradigm. I was born in 1964. At that time, homosexual desires were considered an illness by all major medical and psychological organizations. At that time, homosexual acts were felonies in 49 of the 50 states. At that time, living an openly gay life was, by definition, to live in the margins and to be an outlaw. The world today is changed in many ways. LGBTQ folks live their lives openly and have the possibility of working in any profession, living in any neighborhood, and entering into a legal marriage. These changes are the results of decades of protest and struggle, and decades more of building on those protests to enact systemic change. The dominant culture did not choose to make these changes easily. LGBTQ people went to the streets and demanded these changes. Without that work in the streets, our lives today would be very different. Our lives are the proof that protests work. We must also remember that not all of the LGBTQ family have benefitted equally from this struggle. Our transgender brothers and sisters are still experiencing an epidemic of violence. Queer people of color experience racism within as well as outside of our community. Economic injustice still keeps many LGBTQ youth from realizing their full potential. The sexism of our culture means Lesbian couples are more likely to experience poverty than heterosexual or gay male couples. And, the sex acts of our HIV+ brothers and sisters are still criminalized. The age of protest is not over. Until we have achieved the liberation of the entire LGBTQIA community, there is a role for protest to lift up the issues that the comfortable, both inside and outside our community, do not want to acknowledge. Our lives are also the proof that protest is still needed.

COMMUNITY PROUD IT WORKED FOR US: STARTING A SUCCESSFUL SEX-POSITIVE GROUP IN YOUR CITY - KENDRA HOLLIDAY Our society is confusing – we’re OBSESSED with sex, but we’re SO AFRAID of it. Just about everything thing you see in the media is ignorance or fear-based. Sex is censored, controlled, sensationalized, misconstrued… no wonder we’re confused! That’s why access to sex-positive education is SO critical. EVERY city should have a sex-positive organization where people can learn about sex in a factual, guilt and shame-free zone. Here are the steps detailing how SEX+STL became a success. Take some of these tips and create something positive in YOUR community!

PRIDE GUIDE 2016

pridestl.org

1. My friend Anna Bent approached me in 2010 and asked if I wanted to start a sex-positive organization for St. Louis. The idea started with one person. Anna is the Founder. Then grew to two. I am Co-Founder. 2. We both agreed to choose someone to join us in the cause. She chose Johnny Murdoc. I chose David Wraith. Now we had four Co-Founders, all with diverse backgrounds. We joke that Anna is the smart one, Johnny is the nice one, David is the cool one, and I am the popular one. 3. We looked for a role model and mentor – an established sex-positive organization on the West coast – The Center for Sex-Positive Culture. Allena Gabosh, Development Director, was super kind to share best practices with us. We took what worked for us and ran with it.

4. We started a rudimentary website and had an online presence. We wanted to be a local resource for anything sexrelated. We didn’t claim to be experts, but made it our goal to connect people with whatever they are seeking. 5. Expanding our online presence, we created a Twitter account and Facebook page. 6. We reached out to the community asking for suggestions for a name for our new group. One woman suggested SexPositive St. Louis. We loved it and adopted the name, despite many people expressing confusion at first and thinking we were an HIV/AIDS group. We figured the term “sex-positive” would catch on. We were right. 7. We announced a networking meeting to the community, and immediately met some like-minded people who wanted to also make a difference. Luckily for us, Shameless Grounds was created around the same time. 8. Then, we decided to have our first mixer. 100 people showed up! So, within a month, we went from one, to two, to four, to 100 members! 9. From there we slowly grew. We made a logo and t-shirts. We improved our website. We added more events to our calendar, kept networking and sharing resources, created a meetup group and tried all sorts of creative ideas. Some worked better than others. Our membership grew to 500. 10. We shared tasks and came up with duties. We opened up to volunteers. We had people in the community badmouth us, jealous of our success. We kept looking forward and

remaining positive. We refused to be petty or competitive, recognizing that there are plenty of opportunities for success, and the main objective is to help promote health and happiness. Not only did we grow, but so did our community. We collaborate with SO many great local organizations – just look at our Links page for examples! 11. We learned that creating safe spaces for women is paramount to the success of a sex-positive organization, so we started offering women-only events and sex-positive etiquette classes for men. 12. We got burnt out a few times. We took breaks. We got back in the saddle again, dedicated to our mission. We could see the difference we were making in our community, and it felt GOOD! 13. Anna resigned and moved out of town for her career. We found a replacement – social justice activist Emily! Now we had a new Co-Leader. 14. Johnny resigned to work on other projects. We found a two-for-one replacement – a young couple named Nick and Nikia! Now we had MORE Co-Leaders! Five years later, we’re going STRONG, with almost 2000 members! Our members are becoming more comfortable and confident with their sexualities, and we’re having so much fun exploring new topics and event ideas. We encourage you to join us – replace the fear with love! Visit SEXSTL.com get involved with SEX+STL.

COMMUNITY PROUD A PROUD HISTORY EMERGES - STEVEN LOUIS BRAWLEY, FOUNDER, ST. LOUIS LGBT HISTORY PROJECT As we celebrate this year’s pride theme of solidarity, we reflect upon another year of historic LGBT events taking place across the region and the state. From the dedication of the nation’s first transgender memorial garden to the failure of “religious freedom” legislation, it is evident history marches on. As you enjoy this year’s event, please take a moment to reach out to our community elders. Shake their hands. Hug them. Kiss them. They deserve our gratitude and respect. It is on their shoulders that we stand. Over the years, Pride St. Louis, Inc. has graciously donated exhibit space to the Project. However, due to space limitations caused by the renovation work at Soliders Memorial, the Project will not offer an exhibit at this year’s event. However, we wanted to take this opportunity to update the community on the work of the Project and to thank everyone for their ongoing support.

conducted by WUSTL faculty. The Project will also continue to archive materials with the Missouri History Museum and the State Historical Society of Missouri. - Digital Mapping Project. In April 2016, the Project was invited to collaborate with Washington University and the Missouri History Museum to help map and document historic LGBT sites in St. Louis. The work is part of the “Divided City,” initiative funded by the Mellon Foundation. Washington University professors, students, and GIS experts will help design online interactive maps that will inventory and explore St. Louis’ LGBT spaces (bars, businesses, places of worship, etc.)

Over the past year, the St. Louis LGBT History Project has achieved many milestones. These include: - Programming. This past year, the Project’s robust programming partnership with the Missouri History Museum explored topics that included the 1994 founding of LGBT History Month in St. Louis by Rodney Wilson and gender-fluid female hobos who passed through Union Station. Look forward to future LGBT- focused events at the museum later this year. - Archival Partnerships. In October 2015, the Project announced a new archival partnership with Washington University Libraries’ Department of Special Collections. Through the partnership, the Project will work with WUSTL to preserve LGBT artifacts and offer educational programming with a focus on highlighting the pivotal role WUSTL faculty, alumni, and students have played in LGBT life since the 1800s. The University served as the location of St. Louis’ first LGBT “pride rally” in 1980, with many WUSTL students and faculty participating. Famous gay playwright Tennessee Williams attended the University in the mid 1930s, and groundbreaking medical and sociological LGBT-related research has been

- Research. During the past year, the Project has uncovered many rare photographs and archival records. This included obtaining historical records that officially documented police raids on local gay bars. More than sixty years old, these previously unstudied sources offered a fascinating glimpse of gay nightlife in the 1950s. The records also shed light on the changing relationship between LGBT community and St. Louis’ police. The Project is also investigating new leads and information about St. Louis’ African American and transgender histories.

- Presentations. The Project is often asked to speak to area organizations and community groups. In March 2016, the Project was honored to be a presenter at the State Historical Society of Missouri’s annual meeting in Columbia, Mo.

- Publishing. Project Founder Steven Louis Brawley authored “Gay and Lesbian St. Louis” the first book solely dedicated to the history of LGBT St. Louis. It is offered at Left Bank Books and national online retailers.

- Preservation. During the fall of 2015, the Project worked diligently to preserve several hundred periodicals that were once housed at the former LGBT Center of St. Louis. The periodicals were donated to the Gerber/Hart Library in Chicago, Missouri History Museum, State Historical Society of Missouri, and Washington University. - Oral histories. The Project continues to focus on capturing the stories of the St. Louis LGBT community. During the spring of 2016, the Project co-hosted a series of brunches at Lilly’s Music and Social House that focused on lesbian and feminist storytelling and memory sharing. These events were video-recorded for posterity. - Community events. The Project continues to offer walking tours of the Central West End. Several new tours are being developed and planned for the future. Stay tuned.

The Project is always seeking new information about our region’s LGBT history. Do you have a story, artifact, or idea to share? Please let us know. Learn more at www.stlouislgbthistory.com.
