BOARD CHAIRMAN’S LETTER
Robert Carter Jett’s dream of establishing a school that would draw out “that which is noblest and finest” in each student was made a reality when VES opened its doors in 1916. As we prepare to celebrate our centennial year, we give thanks to the countless people who have allowed us to fulfill our mission of guiding students Toward Full Stature. Bishop Jett would be proud to see what has become of his school, and for good reason. Everywhere you look, from the classrooms to the playing fields, you see the strength of this school, its programs, and its people. I think it begins with talented and dedicated faculty who engage 235 students every day. It includes educational facilities that increasingly offer the latest in technology, such as today’s Hight Library. It includes the simple pleasure of buffets and seated meals in today’s Harrison Dining Room. It will soon

HEADMASTER’S LETTER
Last year was a great one here at VES, and this year is shaping up to be even better. With enrollment at levels not seen in a number of years, financial participation in the Annual Fund strong, and support of our Vision 2016 growing, VES is moving forward nicely. I can’t thank you enough for your stewardship of our school and for your continued support of her mission. VES gets better every year due to the tireless work of countless individuals who have dedicated a good portion of themselves to our

ADVANCEMENT LETTER
I am humbled by the support the school’s Headmaster and Board have placed in me as I undertake my new leadership role in the Advancement Department. Over the past several years I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know so many of you—students, parents, past parents, and alumni—as I worked to strengthen our admissions pool and increase enrollment as the Director of Admissions. In my new role, I look forward to the opportunity to build upon those relationships

TRI-SOCIETIES VES relies on the charitable contributions of alumni, parents, and friends to sustain its programs. Donors provide annual gifts that fuel day-to-day operations, endowment gifts that generate funds in perpetuity, capital gifts for new and renovated facilities, and planned gifts for the future benefit of students and teachers. In its own way, each type of gift helps VES thrive, fulfilling its mission to guide students toward full stature. To recognize these distinct ways of giving, VES has created three benefactor societies—The Bishop Jett Society, The Langhorne Chapel Society, and The 1916 Society. Many donors belong to all three.

THE BISHOP JETT SOCIETY The Bishop Jett Society honors those who have made cumulative gifts of $100,000 or more with assets irrevocably committed or already received by the school. Their generosity is evident throughout campus in named scholarship support, masterships, faculty and staff awards, and in construction, renovation and beautification projects over the years. VES is pleased to celebrate the contribution of these leading benefactors to the continuing prosperity of the school.

THE WILLIAM KING SOCIETY Col. William King, Jr. served VES from 1916 to 1943 as a member of its Board of Trustees. His tireless devotion to VES and longevity of volunteer service is unmatched. Upon his death in 1943, his estate funded the construction of the William King Field House and doubled the VES endowment. Originally called “Old Guard,” those VES alumni at their 50th Reunion are inducted into the William King Society at a ceremony held during Reunion Weekend. All those alumni beyond their 50th will also be known as members of the William King Society. The VES community values and appreciates the shaping influence of these classes.

VISION 2016 AN UPDATE ON VES’ $32,000,000 CAMPAIGN
We’re getting close! Nearly a century ago The Reverend Dr. Robert Carter Jett persuaded a number of influential philanthropists to finance his vision for an Episcopal school designed to evoke from its students “that which is noblest and finest.” Woolworth founder F.M. Kirby, railroad magnate Chiswell Dabney Langhorne, Coca-Cola bottler Lettie Pate Whitehead, The Viscountess Nancy Langhorne Astor, and duPont Managing Vice President Hamilton Barksdale participated in bringing to life Jett’s dream through extraordinary financial commitments. One hundred years later under the leadership of Headmaster Tommy Battle, Virginia Episcopal School’s alumni and friends have continued to honor this tradition of philanthropy. These past five years VES has raised nearly $27,000,000 of its $32,000,000 goal to support the school’s endowments, annual fund, and six strategic capital projects that will enhance the student experience.

ANNUAL FUND
VES’ Annual Fund, the most important fundraising initiative at the school, provides unrestricted, discretionary spending for the school’s greatest needs, including faculty salaries, housing, professional development, and field trips. Last year the Annual Fund buttressed the school’s bottom line by more than $1,000,000, providing 13% of its overall operating budget. During Vision 2016 more than $7,750,000 of Left: The late William Sackett White ’02

One hundred years after Jett’s dream became a reality, 48 years after it pioneered integration for southern boarding schools, and 29 years after its mission to guide boys “toward the full stature of manhood” broadened to encompass girls, VES continues the legacy of Bishop Jett. VISION 2016
REFLECTIONS ON MARGARET T. AND HENRY C. BOURNE, JR. ’40 AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE MARGARET T. BOURNE CHAIR OF SCIENCE
Margaret and Henry Bourne ’40 were strong believers in the positive power of education in a person’s life. They were devoted to their schools and colleges, including Henry’s beloved VES, which Margaret loved as well. I remember very few times that Henry came for board meetings that she was not with him. She was also very involved at her Salem College. Margaret and Henry were also devoted to each other and were adventurous souls who enjoyed traveling, and Henry wanted to honor his wife as part of his legacy at VES. He selected a charitable remainder trust to

commitment to secondary education, to the sciences, and to those who make such a difference in the lives of teenagers. Margaret and Henry knew what many of us know, that “people, not buildings, teach” and that relationships between great teachers and their students are the heart of an excellent education no matter the era, the facilities, or the technology. Henry was always a staunch and passionate supporter of VES’ academic mission and teachers. Henry Bourne served as a VES trustee three separate times, and his academic professional background as teacher, dean, and interim president of Georgia Tech along with his student experiences at VES and MIT gave him perspective. VISION 2016
Joy Hilliard and Tim Courville are the parents of VES students Landon ’15, and Sydney ’17. HOW DID YOU COME TO CHOOSE VIRGINIA EPISCOPAL SCHOOL?
Joy: It sort of chose us. We just came to VES last year. We’ve been very strong public school supporters for many, many years, and the public schools here in Lynchburg are fantastic. Our son attended middle school here and began high school. He had friends at VES, and we happened to go on a summer trip with one of the families, and my son, well, I think he was recruited heavily (laughs). He came home after that trip and, as a rising sophomore, said, “Mom, I might be interested in transferring to VES.” To be clear, we were not fleeing a problem school situation at all, it’s just that we saw a fabulous opportunity. HAS VES MADE AN IMPACT ON YOUR CHILDREN?
Tim: Yes. We’ve been extraordinarily pleased
Dr. Joy Hilliard & Dr. Tim Courville
with the impact VES has made. Our children
PA R E N T S O F L A N D O N ’ 1 5 & SY D N E Y ’ 1 7
have grown both socially and academically, and have matured significantly in their interactions. It can be difficult for young males to find male mentors in academic environments and VES is a repository for that. It’s been great. Joy: What you find is that the kids are in an environment of positive influence both from

the student level and the faculty level. I don’t know what the faculty count is here, let’s just say it’s 30 or so, but I feel like my children have 30 adult parents that they listen to, parents that share our values. The faculty are really in line with what we want academically from our children, and what we want socially and spiritually in their development, and the irony is that my children listen to these people when
