Help shape our All Abilities Inclusion Action Plan Council is seeking the community’s input on the review and update of the All Abilities Inclusion Action Plan 2022-2026, which was formerly named the Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2017-2021. An online survey was launched on Monday (7 February) as part of the community consultation process. currently like living in Wagga Wagga and enables individuals, their family or carer to provide feedback on their unique experiences,” Ms Lehman said. “It also looks to identify aspirations for different facets of life, such as employment, recreation, programs and service provision for all abilities community members that will go toward improving access and inclusion for all. “The results of the survey, along with other community consultation currently underway, will inform the priority actions to be reported in the All Abilities Inclusion Action Plan 2022-2026 so Wagga Wagga is a liveable community for all abilities individuals, their families and carers." The online survey is open now for feedback and closes on Monday 4 April 2022. Get your tickets for Raiders v Storm NRL clash From front page Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Cr Dallas Tout said the Raiders’ commitment to bring their third game in four years to Wagga Wagga was a strong reflection of the partnership the club and the city have forged in recent times. “This regional game has developed into one of the most anticipated events on our calendar in recent years which is fantastic for local residents and also the broader Riverina community who love to support the Raiders in Wagga Wagga,” Cr Tout said. “We had to call off the 2020 fixture due to the uncertainty of the pandemic and last year’s game went ahead with limited numbers due to restrictions. “This year we’re hoping to have greater capacity available which will be terrific

for the community and also the players who I’m sure enjoy playing to a packed crowd … and that’s something we want to deliver this year if possible. “Get online, get your tickets and lock in 9 April for a day of rugby league action between two great clubs with strong traditions and links to the Riverina.” Cr Tout also reminded rugby league supporters that the city’s FUSION22 multicultural festival was being held on the evening of 9 April and was a fantastic opportunity for footy fans to extend their stay and get along to this event. “We’re a very diverse and inclusive city and the FUSION festival of live music, street food and culture represents what that means to us,” Cr Tout said. Raiders’ CEO Don Furner said the club is looking forward to returning to Wagga Wagga and rewarding their many

Riverina supporters with an NRL game in their own backyard. “The past few years have been tough and we’ve all adapted to the challenges, but one thing that hasn’t changed is our commitment to bring one of our games to Wagga,” Mr Furner said. “We’re moving forward, hopefully towards better times away from the pandemic, and our club is keen to play our part in that recovery. “We look forward to the Wagga fixture; there’s a great vibe around the city which just adds to the strong relationship we have forged with the region. “A game against the Storm doesn’t get much better … it should be a great game at a great venue in front of a great crowd.” General public tickets are available through ticketek.com.au

STANDING ROOM ONLY: A sell-out crowd gathered at McDonalds Park on 9 May 2021 to watch the Raiders play the Newcastle Knights.

In the works! Dunns Road upgrade set to begin Work on the $8.3 million project to seal and upgrade Dunns Road on Wagga Wagga’s southern outskirts is set to get underway later this month. The works are scheduled to start on Monday 21 February 2022 and are expected to be completed by end of June, weather permitting. This phase of the project will cover the approximately five-kilometre length of the road between the intersections with the Olympic Highway at the western end and Holbrook Road at the eastern end. The intersections themselves will be upgraded at a later date. Wagga Wagga City Council Senior Project Manager Silas Darby said this phase of the project will involve upgrading the existing 2.8-kilometre sealed section and sealing the remaining 2.2 kilometres of unsealed road. “The works will use a computerised grading system with 3-dimensional technologies to replace the existing road and seal the unsealed sections of the road,” Mr Darby said. “Cross road drainage will be improved, wire rope barriers and w-beams will be installed and the surface, once sealed, will be line marked. “During the work, the road will be closed to

through traffic and detours will be in place, but residents and businesses will maintain access. “We understand the closure will cause some inconvenience for motorists who use the road as a short cut between Wagga Wagga and the townships of Uranquinty, The Rock and the Australian Army base at Kapooka. “However, once completed, the upgrade will improve road safety, traffic flow, and provide a more direct route to the city’s southern suburbs from the Olympic Highway.” A separate program in conjunction with Transport NSW is to construct a right-hand turn lane at the Olympic Highway and Dunns Road intersection. Tenders have gone out for this work. Construction of a roundabout at the Holbrook Road and Dunns Road intersection will be subject to receiving black spot funding. Traffic changes for Touch titles at Jubilee Park Wagga Wagga is just one week away from hosting the fourth annual NSW Touch Association’s (NSWTA) Junior State Cup Southern Conference. Players and spectators from across southern parts of the state will be back at the Jubilee Park precinct from Friday 18 to Sunday 20 February for the carnival. Wagga Wagga City Council’s Strategic Recreation Officer Peter Cook said there will be changed traffic conditions around Jubilee Park over the three-day carnival. “Residents and motorists in the Jubilee Park area can expect some lane closures and detours with higher than normal traffic movements at certain stages of the day,” Mr Cook said. “Red Hill Road will be open to west-bound traffic only between the Bourke Street and Glenfield Road roundabouts, while a 40 kilometres per hour speed limit will be in effect along that stretch of road. “Council will have traffic management personnel in place at major intersections and signage in the area to assist the flow of traffic. “We expect there will be some challenges on the Friday as it

clashes with work and school traffic, but we hope motorists are patient and understand that an event of this size is bringing significant economic benefit to the city.” NSWTA and Wagga Wagga City Council have planned to ensure a COVID-safe environment is provided at the carnival, with a format similar to the 2021 event. “Each day will be divided into four sections under an ‘arriveplay-leave’ format, with a oneand-a-half-hour break before the next group of games begin,” Mr Cook said. “That structure will reduce the number of players and parents/ supporters on site at any one time. “From a traffic point-of-view that makes it flow a bit better and gives people time to get there before their games, find a park, play or watch the games and then leave before the next group comes in.” Motorists are also advised to take care in the area due to more pedestrian traffic expected. See the Jubilee Park traffic management plan at wagga.nsw. gov.au/roadclosures

Traffic changes include: • Red Hill Road will be closed to east-bound traffic between the Glenfield Road and Bourke Street roundabouts, with detours via Bruce Street. • Bourke Street between Bourkelands Drive and Red Hill Road roundabout will be

closed to non-event traffic, with detours via Berembee Road, Bourkelands Drive and Holbrook Road. • Road closures will be in place from 6am to 5pm on Friday and Saturday and 6am to 3pm on Sunday. Detours will be signposted.

Riverside Stage 2 transformation taking shape Work on Stage 2 of Wagga Wagga City Council’s Riverside project is progressing. The precinct stretching from the beach carpark through to the former St Michael’s Oval is being transformed into a large multipurpose public recreation space. Council Project Manager Srivalli Miah said the regionally significant playground, designed by Moduplay, is more than 85 per cent complete. “Most of the key equipment has been installed in the all-abilities adventure play space, and the soft fall and landscaping are being installed over the next few weeks,” Ms Miah said. “Concrete works for the shared path and

pavement, along with the tiered seating works near the new kiosk are progressing, and the internal fit out is underway on the new amenities block. “The new main stage, which will cater for a wide range of events, is also taking shape, with the structural steel frames installed and block work and slabs for the stage also in progress.” The overall Riverside Stage 2 project is being funded by NSW Government’s Restart NSW, the Federal Government’s Local Roads & Community Infrastructure Fund and Council. It is expected to be completed by the end of April 2022, weather permitting.

Upgrades in store for Glenfield Road Animal Shelter The Glenfield Road Animal Shelter will soon benefit from an upgrade which will include the installation of a boom gate and a concrete exercise area with shade sails. Wagga Wagga City Council Animal Welfare Supervisor Julie McPhail said the switch from a grassed exercise area to a concrete surface would improve hygiene and help prevent the outbreak and spread of canine parvovirus – a serious and highly contagious disease that can survive in soil and on surfaces for long periods of time. “Parvovirus affects unvaccinated puppies and dogs, and many of the animals we receive have an unknown vaccination history, so we don’t always know what we’re putting out in the yard,” Ms McPhail said. “We want to ensure all our animals are safe while they’re with us, and part of our duty of care is to provide them with a safe and clean area to exercise in. “We’ll be able to disinfect the concrete exercise yard and keep the dogs safe from contamination,

and the shade sails will give the dogs adequate shade away from the summer weather. “Of course, all our rehomed pets are vet-checked, microchipped, desexed, wormed and lifetime-registered.” Boom gates will be installed to help direct community members to the shelter’s designated parking area. “Even though we have quite a few signs, we still often find members of the public parked in staff areas, looking a bit lost,” Ms McPhail said. “The boom gates will help keep the public and work areas separate and also help ensure community safety.” The $70,000 upgrades ($51,000 for the concrete exercise area and shade sails, and $19,000 for the boom gate installation) will be funded by additional income received from dog and cat registrations during the 2021/22 financial year. The upgrade is underway, and due for completion by the end of June 2022. For more information about pets and animals, visit wagga.nsw.gov.au/ animals

SAFE AND CLEAN (above): Animal Welfare Officer Marianne Burrows gives Ruby, a female 2-year-old Koolie, some free time in one of the shelter’s concrete exercise yards. SHADE UNDERWAY (left): The shelter’s grassed exercise yard will be concreted, making the surface easy to disinfect and protect dogs from contamination which can remain in soil for long periods of time. Work has begun to erect shade sails over the yard, which will keep the animals cool in summer.
