Wagga Wagga City Council will be carrying out tree pruning along rural roads over the next few weeks as part of Council’s long-term tree management strategy. Pruning will be taking place on Millwood Road and Mundowy Lane working south to the Sturt Highway, then along Coolamon Road from Farrer Road heading north to the Coolamon boundary. Traffic control will be employed and there will be some minor delays for motorists. Supervisor Tree Planning & Management Jim Dunn said one of the main purposes behind preventative pruning was to help ensure road safety and enable truck drivers to reach their destination safely and easily. “The height of a lot of B Double trucks has increased, many of them are now four-decker trucks, which could potentially encounter issues travelling at speed towards low-hanging branches,” Mr Dunn said. “Our aim is to keep these trucks on tarred roads where possible, so we have a bit of a spiderweb-like format in mind when it comes to roadside pruning. “If you look at a map of Wagga Wagga, you've got the Olympic Highway going north to south and the Sturt Highway travelling east to west. These are the major routes for traffic and large trucks.

“We have already undertaken roadside pruning on link roads like Burrandana, Yerong Creek, Mates Gully, Keajura, Pattersons, Trahairs, Shepherds Siding, Brunskill and Coursing Park roads.” Mr Dunn said now was a suitable time for pruning due to higher levels of moisture in the ground. “We don’t prune in January or February when it’s hot because it puts the trees under duress,” Mr Dunn said. “If a tree is pruned at the incorrect time of year, it can shut down their system, which you obviously want to avoid; this happens mainly with drier climate trees. “The trees we’re pruning are all remnant roadside vegetation or their offspring. That’s the reason they’re so hardy because their parent stock was there for generations before them, so the offspring have the same degree of drought climate tolerance.” Mr Dunn requested that motorists drive slowly and remain patient if delayed during the pruning activities. “We ask drivers to take care while travelling past the crews carrying out the work. Once we’re done pruning and we’re happy with the result, we won’t have to do those roads again for another 10 to 15 years.”

Help direct your region’s future Preparation for this revised plan has been informed by direct consultation, communication with, and feedback received from our community and key stakeholders during the past five years throughout the development of Council’s adopted high-level strategies and plans. Corporate Strategy Coordinator Jacqueline Martin said this feedback period is an ideal opportunity for community members to review the plan while considering what they like about living in Wagga Wagga and surrounding villages, as well as what could be improved, and let Council know. “We want to make sure that the key priorities for our community are achieved through the Community Strategic Plan, as its objectives guide all Council’s other strategies and plans,” Ms Martin said. “For example, our Cultural Plan; Biodiversity Strategy; Integrated Transport Strategy; Recreation, Open Space and Community Strategy among others; these all flow from the Community Strategic Plan and detail the specific actions, timeframes, funding, and key partners we need to deliver it.” Ms Martin encouraged the community to think ‘big picture’ when it came to providing feedback on the Community Strategic Plan. “We want to know whether Council is on the right track to meet our community’s needs, now and into the future.” Ms Martin said even if community feedback included a topic that Council is not directly responsible for delivering, it would still be taken into consideration. “For example, if we received a lot of feedback about improved access to healthcare services, we could flow that information into our advocacy
plans to show us where we can best partner with state and federal government, and into community strategies, such as advocating for or supporting programs for improved mental health or supporting initiatives to bring GPs to regional areas,” Ms Martin said. “Once the community tells us what the key priorities are, we will look at what we can do to bring us closer to achieving them. Partnerships with other levels of government, along with individuals, industry and community organisations will be crucial to achieving our long-term goals.” The Community Strategic Plan is supported by other strategies and plans which ensure the community’s long-term priorities and aspirations set out in the plan result in some form of measurable action, which is detailed in Council’s four-year Delivery Program and annual Operational Plans. Council is committed to ensuring the Community Strategic Plan continues to reflect our community’s current priorities and aspirations for the future of Wagga Wagga. “We’re inviting the community to take a look at all these plans, in particular the draft revised Community Strategic Plan, and give us feedback to guide what we’re delivering over the term, based on available resources.” The draft revised Community Strategic Plan 2040, draft Delivery Program 2022/2026 and Annual Operational Plan 2022/2023; draft Fees and Charges 2022/2023; and draft Long-Term Financial Plan 2022/23 are on public exhibition until 4 June 2022. Your library is expanding
From front page “We’ll be bringing the library to you,” Ms Campbell said. “The vans will be very agile and will be able to visit various locations depending on where people meet and gather. “We could be taking Storytime to the villages or suburbs, delivering our Tech Savvy Seniors classes and multicultural services to different community groups, or taking our Language
Café to community centres. “We want to extend our service and take it to where people live, reaching out and connecting the library services to as many people as possible. “Residents can also reserve any items they’d like for free, by giving us a call, and we’ll take the items out to you at your preferred suburban or rural village location in the van. The Wagga Wagga City Library collection has over 78,000 items, so we’re thrilled to be able to circulate those items further through our community; you’ll have the library at your fingertips.” The library at the Civic Centre
is also physically expanding with the current capital works program planned to be completed mid-year. “We’ll have five different learning spaces, the childrens’ area will be doubled in size with an accessible toilet, and our entrance is going to be opened up with additional seating areas,” Ms Campbell said. “From 1 July we’ll also be issuing new library cards. Your existing card will continue to work, and we will replace it the next time you come into the library. “We’re excited to be able to provide the community with the service they asked for. Now is an exciting time to pay a visit or check in with us online or over the phone and be part of your library service.” For more information visit waggalibrary.com.au or call 6926 9700.
