Creative fun for all ages at school holiday Art Camp Get ready for a week full of fun and exciting art workshops, as Art Camp returns from Tuesday to Friday, 11-14 January, at the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery. Children, teenagers and families are being encouraged to explore their artistic potential, with a range of workshops on offer, from animation to jewellery making. Digital & Programs Officer Tayla Martin said this is the second year the gallery is presenting its Art Camp program, which features eight workshops across four days. “Art Camp is one of our favourite programs across the year, and we are excited to kick start 2022 with it,” Ms Martin said. “It’s always great seeing so many excited faces, young and old, learning new skills and meeting new people. "We have a range of activities designed to cater to different age groups, from children under 12 to teenagers and right

through to the whole family. “The aim is to give participants the chance to enjoy some handson and fun skills building and they will also be able to take home their creations from some of the sessions.” There will be two workshops each day – the first session running from 10am to 12pm and the second session from 2pm to 4pm. Some of the exhibitions currently on show at the gallery will be the inspiration for the themes and art forms explored in the Art Camp sessions. “Inspired by the work of jewellery maker Blanche Tilden, we have Little Bling on Wednesday (12 January), where students will create their own fun and playful jewellery to wear, using upcycled material,” Ms Martin said. “Inky Insects on Thursday (13 January) will put the spotlight on Ink in the Lines. Join us on a scavenger hunt to find bugs,

butterflies and flowers in the tattoo designs and create your own insect designs using watercolour and ink.” The Art Camp is part of the gallery’s Summer Holiday Program, which also includes an artist talk and phone camera workshop by photographic artist James Tylor, on 14 and 15 January respectively. The gallery is also excited to welcome back Wiradjuri Storytime to the E3 art space from 19-21 January, listening to stories of country, family and place told by Wiradjuri storytellers. The community has voted, and Wagga Wagga City Council can reveal the preferred option for the new playground at the Uranquinty rest area. More than 130 votes were received through an online poll conducted between 22 November and 6 December 2021. Works and Playground Officer John Conlan said there were three design options for the project to replace the existing rest area playground, which is used by the Uranquinty community and travellers on the Olympic Highway. “The response from the community was overwhelmingly in favour of Option 3, which received 60 votes, well ahead of the next favourite Option 1 with 39 votes,” Mr Conlan said. “We really appreciate the strong

interest shown in the poll by Uranquinty residents and others from across the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area. “It reflects the important role these spaces play in our community.” The preferred design option includes traditional playground equipment, such as swings

and slides, as well as bespoke elements. Council will engage the supplier and construction of the new playground is expected to begin in the new year. The project is part of Council’s playground replacement program under the Playground Strategy 2016-2036.

KOORINGAL ROAD UPGR ADE DUE TO RESUME NEXT WEEK

Works to complete the Kooringal Road upgrade will resume on Monday (10 January 2022). The work will be carried out on an 800-metre section between Mena Street and Vincent Road from 7am to 5pm weekdays and is expected to take two weeks, weather permitting. This section of road will be closed to traffic whilst works are in progress with detours and traffic control in place. Residents and businesses in the work zone will maintain access. The road is planned to be open to traffic every night and on the weekend. Recycling of the road to add 3% of hot bitumen and 2% hydrated lime/flyash by mixing it in to the existing pavement to improve its quality will occur over the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of the first week followed by compaction and trimming to seal the road on Friday with a 10mm bitumen seal. On Monday 17 January and Tuesday 18 January, traffic control will be in place for the construction of a new traffic island adjacent to Amy Hurd Park as part of the Active Travel project. The final wearing course, a 50mm asphalt overlay, is expected to take place on 22 and 24 January where the road will be closed whilst works are in progress for this final part of the Kooringal Road upgrade. Construction on this section of Kooringal Road will utilise a new pavement design and construction methodology which significantly reduces the time to complete a project. Council’s Director Infrastructure Warren Faulkner said the process utilises specialised machines to recycle and strengthen the existing pavement, thus reducing the need to remove and import

He said there are many advantages to trialling the new pavement rehabilitation methodology. “Utilising this style of road building could see the 800-metre section of Kooringal Road finished in two weeks if all goes to plan,” Mr Faulkner said. “This is a significant difference to 10 weeks as was originally planned.” He said traffic management services will be required for less time, detours and disruptions for residents will be minimised and the adjoining road network will be under less pressure with increased traffic. The project started last year but was postponed due to ongoing unfavourable weather conditions for the road works and the Australian Government granting an extension for the completion of all Local Road and Community Infrastructure Round 1 projects to 30 June 2022 because of the impacts of COVID-19. Mr Faulkner said an extension for Round 1 and 2 projects to 30 June 2022 gave Council the opportunity to complete the works under more favourable conditions.

IMAGINATIONS TAKE FLIGHT WITH LITTLE WING PUPPETS AT THE LIBRARY

Come along and explore the wonderful world of shadow puppetry when Wagga Wagga City Library hosts Little Wing Puppets workshops as part of its School Holiday Program later this month. The workshops are aimed at children aged between 4 -12 years and will be held at the Civic Centre on Thursday 20 January 2022. Programs & Promotions Officer Jeannie Hazell said the library is thrilled to be able to offer three fun sessions with experienced puppeteer Jenny Ellis from Little Wing Puppets. “It will be a lot of fun for the participants who will get to imagine and design their own puppets and then learn how to cut and craft their creation,” Ms Hazell said.

“Jenny will guide them through that process and give them tips and tricks on how to bring them to life with the shadow puppetry, such as how to move them, where to put them so the light catches them and shadows work correctly. “They will finish with a performance of their own stories on a real shadow puppet stage and they can take their puppet home at the end of the workshop.” The session will be held at 10am, 1pm and 3pm in the Wagga Wagga City Council Meeting Room, opposite the library entrance. Participants aged six and under must be accompanied by an adult. Numbers are limited so bookings are essential and can be made by visiting waggalibrary.com.au
