Canberra Raiders to return to Wagga Wagga in 2023 From front page Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Dallas Tout and Raiders’ Chief Executive Officer Don Furner made the announcement ahead of the round 5 NRL clash between the Raiders and Melbourne Storm at Wagga Wagga’s McDonalds Park on Saturday 9 April 2022. Cr Tout said Council is thrilled

the club has made the decision to return to the city next year. “The Raiders’ continued commitment to Wagga Wagga reflects the strong partnership between the club and the city which has the potential to grow,” Cr Tout said. “This will be the fourth time in five years that residents of our city and the surrounding region will

have the opportunity to watch the Green Machine play one of their NRL games here. “It is fantastic news for both rugby league fans and for Wagga Wagga as a whole. These sorts of events deliver major flow-on effects for local businesses who can capitalise on visitors to our city.” Mr Furner said the Raiders

value their partnership with Wagga Wagga and welcomed the opportunity to play another game at McDonalds Park. “We’re really excited to announce we’ll be coming back to Wagga Wagga for a fourth time in 2023,” Mr Furner said. “We pride ourselves as the NRL’s regional club and we can’t wait to come back to Wagga Wagga

again next year and continue what has been a great relationship. “The Raiders have a wonderful connection with our regional areas and Wagga Wagga has become a central part of this connection.” The timing for next year’s fixture will be revealed once the draw for the 2023 NRL season is released. Tickets for Saturday’s game are still available at ticketek.com.au

Zoo tours to art camp, there’s plenty on these school holidays Visitors to the Wagga Zoo & Aviary will have more opportunities to see their favourite residents and discover new additions as the zoo opens its gates seven days a week for Easter and the school holidays. Starting from today (Saturday 9 April), the zoo will operate from 9am to 4pm, seven days a week for the school holiday period, except for Good Friday (15 April) when it will be closed to the public. Eastern grey kangaroos Noni and Judd, along with Kieran the swamp wallaby will all be on display, along with the emus, miniature donkeys, all the farmyard animals, and Gumby and Derek the black swans which are in the wallaby enclosure. Zoo Curator Wendy McNamara if you loved the movie Babe, there is a special treat in store for you at the farmyard in the form of two Wessex Saddleback cross piglets, who arrived at the zoo last month. “Broccoli and Tofu are just seven weeks old so they’re very cute and cuddly looking at this stage,” Ms McNamara said. “We’ve started doing some basic training with them, teaching them to sit, jump through hoops and to come when they’re called so we can eventually have them as part of the zoo interaction experience. “There are plenty of other youngsters to see on your visits, from baby deer to Phillip, the sixmonth old turkey, who loves to show off his dancing skills. “You can also visit our recently renovated free-flight aviary, where there are birds that will land on your head or shoulders, so I recommend

Reviving drivers: Visitor Information Centre becomes official driver reviver site

Wagga Wagga City Council has completed an upgrade to facilities at the Visitor Information Centre as part of the Australian Government’s Driver Reviver Site Upgrades program. The $167,000 upgrade includes a new shade sail over the playground, BBQ shelter with two picnic tables, footpath upgrades, additional seating, an accessible toilet upgrade, and new signage. Visitor Economy & Events Coordinator Fiona Hamilton said Council applied for funding to improve the popular facility as the city is perfectly placed as a rest stop for travellers. “Wagga Wagga is located halfway between Sydney and Melbourne, and is a stopover for people heading to and from Adelaide, so it made sense to invest in our Visitor Information Centre to better support travellers,” Ms Hamilton said.

“Setting the Visitor Information Centre up as a Driver Reviver site means we can help motorists manage their fatigue on long journeys by giving them a welcoming and attractive place to stop for a free cup of coffee or tea and a biscuit, use our facilities, and stretch their legs. “It will also help promote our city as visitors can take advantage of the location to visit our attractions, shop or dine along our main street, stroll along the adjacent Wiradjuri Trail to visit Wagga Beach and the Riverside playground, and even take an extended break on subsequent trips.” The Visitor Information Centre’s footpaths, carpark and bathroom facilities have all been constructed or upgraded to accommodate all-abilities access. During peak holiday periods, Council will post Driver Reviver messaging at the

city gateways on the Sturt Highway and Olympic Highway entrances promoting the Driver Reviver site and encouraging visitors to stop and take a break. The Visitor Information Centre Driver Reviver capital works upgrade received $148,000 funding from the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communication – Office of Road Safety, with Council funding an additional $19,000 toward this project. Driver Reviver is a community program which has been operating in Australia for more than 30 years, promoting road safety and helping reduce the road toll and fatigue-related road trauma. The Wagga Wagga Visitor Information Centre is joining over 180 Driver Reviver sites across Australia which are open during the busy holiday periods. For more information, visit driverreviver.com.au

Progress on Dunns Road upgrade Wagga Wagga City Council is continuing work on the Dunns Road upgrade, with the road due to be completely sealed by the end of June 2022, weather permitting. Council has finished improving the cross road drainage, and is now carrying out earthworks and applying road pavement. Associate Director of Projects Silas Darby said a reduced speed limit of 80 km/h would be in place on the adjoining section of the Olympic Highway between 9.30am and 3.30pm until Monday 23 May 2022. “The speed limit has been reduced on the Olympic Highway between Dunns Road and the Old Olympic Highway at Kapooka while we’re working,” Mr Darby said. “The reduced speed limit applies to both northbound and southbound lanes. “We’re using heavy transport to move material from our Kapooka stockpile site, which is alongside the Olympic Highway, to Dunns Road, so we’re asking road users to drive slowly and be aware of trucks turning.” Mr Darby said Council was currently

midway through stage 1 of the upgrade. “Right now, we’re upgrading the existing 2.8-kilometre sealed section and sealing the remaining 2.2 kilometres of unsealed road,” Mr Darby said. “As long as the weather remains fine, we’re aiming to have this finished by the end of June.” The second stage of the upgrade will see Council working with Transport NSW to construct a right-hand turning lane at the Olympic Highway and Dunns Road intersection. Stage 3 of the upgrade, construction of a roundabout at the Holbrook Road and Dunns Road intersection, will be subject to receiving black spot funding. The project is expected to be completed by December 2022. The Dunns Road upgrade project is funded by the Australian Government ($5.8 million) and Wagga Wagga City Council ($2.5 million).
