In the state of the city address in February, I proclaimed Riverton to be “strong, prosperous and growing.” There is no doubt that we are a city on the move. It’s important that during this time of prosperity and growth that we are moving in the right direction; a direction that enhances our quality of life. As a result, city leaders convened on January 13 for an all-day strategic planning session. Elected officials reviewed the results of survey responses from hundreds of you, in addition to reviewing our own personal interactions with residents, to help in the creation of Riverton’s new vision and mission statements. In addition to the vision and mission, the governing body also adopted eight strategic priorities to set the agenda for city government in the years ahead. The priorities include:
Certain elected officials and senior staff have volunteered to champion and create action plans centered on each of these priorities. Though we are in the early stages of the process, my hope is that we will be able to track our progress in these areas and provide updates to you along the way.

In an effort to increase participation from our citizens in city government, and as an avenue to utilize the tremendous passion and talent we have in our community, the council recently adopted an ordinance
that allows for volunteer boards or committees to be created “to assist the mayor in formulating strategies, advance objectives and provide other counsel.” Volunteer committees focused on such areas as economic development, parks and recreation, emergency preparedness, and events will create yet another avenue for you to participate in your local government. If you are diligent, you can avoid some of life’s most frustrating situations. When you discover your car or your home have been burglarized, there is inevitably a deep sense of personal violation coupled with anger and desires for justice. We share that frustration as your police department and want to do everything we can to help you avoid becoming a victim. Here are a few helpful suggestions for avoiding these nasty situations: • Lock your doors! The lion’s share of car and home burglaries are crimes of opportunity. Doors and windows that are unsecured are an open invitation for a dastardly burglar. Please, please, please, lock your doors! • Make sure you close your garage door as a matter of habit. An open garage door is a welcome invitation to a criminal to help themselves to your golf clubs, bikes, snow blowers, or even your cars.

• Lighting reduces crimes of opportunity. Citizens should use motion sensor lighting in the front and back of their homes, especially in areas where their cars are parked and where doors are located. These simple suggestions can mean the difference between becoming a victim or not. We hope it doesn’t happen, but if you should find yourself a victim of a property crime, please contact our dispatch center at (801) 743-7000.

Riverton City’s Start Smart Sports Development Programs are designed to help children and parents develop the skills necessary to have a positive
start with organized sports. Parents will work one-on-one with their children during four 1-hour classes. No equipment necessary. National Anthem Auditions Come tryout to sing the national anthem at the annual Riverton Town Days Rodeos this summer. Auditions will be held on Thursday, April 19 at 3:30 p.m. at the Old Dome Meeting Hall.
Little Women Musical Tickets Available The Riverton Arts Council presents Little Women, a Broadway musical, on April 13, 14, 16, 20, 21 and 23 at the Sandra N. Lloyd Community Center in Riverton! The show starts at 7 p.m. on all showing dates, with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase at rivertonartscouncil.org.
April is “Clean-Up Month”
April is “clean-up month” and a great time to get your homes and yards ready for spring. Pick up your discount coupon to the Trans Jordan Landfill for the months of April-June at the utility billing or reception windows at City Hall. Please recycle whenever possible!
Dumpster Rentals Available Riverton City has dumpsters available for rent for spring cleanup projects. The service is offered from April to October. Dumpsters can be delivered on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday and are for residential use only. If interested, visit the utility billing office at City Hall or call (801) 208-3133.
HOUSEHOLD WATER MAINTENANCE TIPS Flush your hot water heater at least every six months. There will likely be a valve on the side of your hot water heater near the floor where you can attach a hose to. Run the hose to the floor drain, open the valve, and allow the water to flow for about 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, close the valve and remove the hose.
Exercise all control valves in your home at least every six months. Control valves are located under your sinks, behind toilets, and the main water shut off to your home (usually in the basement). Failure to operate regularly may lead to malfunction in the event of emergency.

Healthy Riverton Seeking Volunteers Healthy Riverton is looking for volunteers to serve on its committee. The goal of Healthy Riverton is to promote healthy lives by improving overall mental and physical wellness of Riverton citizens. The group meets at 4:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month at City Hall. Those interested can reach out to Lisa Carter at healthyriverton@gmail.com.
Youth Council Accepting Applicants Teens age 14-18 years old are invited to apply to serve on the Riverton City Youth Council for the upcoming year. Applicants must commit to participate in 85% of youth council events and must live in Riverton. Apply online at rivertoncity.com.
CITY JOB OPENINGS Seasonal Maintenance Worker Seasonal Maintenance Workers are needed in the parks, streets, and water departments. Job duration is a maximum of 5.5 months. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, have a high school diploma, and have a valid Utah driver’s license. Upcoming Events Flexible Tennis Leagues The flexible tennis leagues are ideal for those 16 years and older with an interest in tennis. Cost is $10 and includes eight matches and recognition for top players. Two eight-week sessions will be held from April 23-June 17 and July 9-Sept. 2. Pickleball Leagues Riverton City’s pickleball league is designed to keep everyone playing in a social, fun and competitive environment. The league operates using a round robin mixer. Cost is $15 plus $10 for a shirt. Play options are available based on experience and skill set. Sessions include: April 24-May 15, May 29-June 19, July 10-Aug. 7 and Aug. 21 – Sept. 11. Tennis Lessons Tennis lessons will be available for individuals 5 years of age and older and are provided based on age and ability levels. Cost is $40 for four 1-hour lessons. Evening classes are held once a week on Thursdays from May-Sept. Morning classes are held four days in a row on Mon.-Thurs. from June-July. ASAP Karate Gain self-discipline and self-confidence while learning to defend against bullies and strangers. Family fun and recreation for ages 5 and up. Students advance in rank.
