BOIS BLANC
• Bois Blanc, commonly known as Boblo Island, is an island on the Canadian side of the Detroit River. • Bois Blanc means “white woods” in French. It is believed that non French speaking individuals who were mispronouncing the island’s name began calling it Boblo. • The island is located at the mouth of the Detroit River and measures 4km long and 0.8km wide covering 272 acres. • Ferry service runs between Amherstburg and Bois Blanc. • Bois Blanc is now a residential community with approximately 200 residences on the island.

• The earliest known reference to settlers on Bois Blanc was in 1718 mentioning 70 First Nations families who lived on the island, farming the fertile land. • In 1742, European settlers came to the island.

Bois Blanc Blockhouse and Lighthouse • Sitting at the mouth of the Detroit River, the island became crucial in the navigation of large ships passing through the Detroit River. • Bois Blanc played an important role in the Underground Railroad, becoming a rest stop for many people who came to Canada. • The Bois Blanc Lighthouse was built in 1863 and is one of the oldest lighthouses on the Great Lakes. It has been designated a heritage lighthouse by Parks Canada and is a national historic site because it was part of a brief occupation during the Rebellion of 1837 - 1838. • The Bois Blanc Blockhouse, built in 1839 as part of the Fort Malden defenses, has also been designated as a national historic site. • The Boblo Island Amusement Park opened in 1898 and closed in 1993.
