News of the third shift being eliminated at Fiat Chrysler’s Windsor Assembly Plant was front and centre at the annual warden’s luncheon last Friday afternoon. The event, presented by the WindsorEssex Chamber of Commerce, saw Warden Gary McNamara address the large crowd at the Ciociaro Club with McNamara making reference to FCA’s announcement, which will impact 1,500 employees this coming September. “When news gets serious like it did yesterday, we come together and fight,” said McNamara. McNamara also pledged his and the County of Essex’s full support to the impacted workers. He vowed they will “work together as a region to try and save those jobs.”
It wasn’t the first time the area has faced uncertainty related to the FCA plant, McNamara pointed out, but added they worked together and persevered before and will do it again. “We’ll work collectively yet again to deal with the fallout of (Thursday’s) news,” he said, noting he was appreciative of support relayed from federal Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Navdeep Bains and Premier Doug Ford. McNamara noted Unifor Local 444 president Dave Cassidy called the Windsor Assembly Plant the “crown jewel” of Windsor-Essex County “and he’s right.” “We’ll do everything we can do to save those jobs and those workers,” McNamara emphasized. The news from the FCA plant will “ripple through the supply chain,” the warden added, but said the region will be strong in the face of adversity. “It will not break us,” said McNamara. “We will endure like we have in the past.” Rakesh Naidu, president/CEO of the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce, said prior to McNamara’s address that the news surrounding the FCA plant “clearly disappointing for everyone.” “It’s a huge loss, the 1,500 jobs,” he said. “We feel for the families.” Naidu also voiced concern over the spinoff effects the news will have. By Ron Giofu Local veterans who served with the 1st Special Service Force are going to be recognized in Amherstburg. Town council heard from members of the King’s Navy Yard 1st Special Service Force (FSSF) Memorial Project –Tim Rousseau, Jeff Turner, Craig Haines, and Brad Krewench – at the March 25 meeting and endorsed their proposal to have two 12”x24” bronze plaques installed at a yet-to-be-determined location within the King’s Navy Yard Park. Rousseau explained that the project recognizes members of the 1st Special Service Force from Windsor-Essex County “for their truly remarkable contribution in maintaining the peace and freedom we enjoy today.” The project, Rousseau continued, is being coordinated between Adopt-A-Vet Canada and the King’s Navy Yard FSSF Project – Amherstburg. Amherstburg native Ralph Mayville is one of living members of the FSSF and will be one of 28 members honoured. Mayville was at the March 25 town council meeting and received a standing ovation from council, staff and members of the public. As described in the presentation to town council, the 1st Special Service Force is also known as The Devil’s Brigade, The Black Devils, The Black Devils’ Brigade, and Freddie’s Freighters. “It was an elite American–Canadian commando unit during World War II, under command of the United States 5th Army. The unit was organized in 1942 and disbanded in 1944. Today’s modern Special Forces Units are conceived on the same practices and principals of the FSSF. In 2013, the United States Congress passed a bill to award the 1st SSF the Congressional Medal Gold Medal in recognition of their service. There are twenty-eight members of the 1st SSF from the Windsor and Essex County region that are to be recognized.” Once the plaques are installed in King’s Navy Yard Park, a dedication ceremony will be scheduled to pay tribute to them and their service to Canada. Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche thanked the veterans for their service and dedication, referring to them as “heroes of the past.” Continued on Page 4

Traffic to be impacted as forcemain project resumes Traffic along County Road 20 from Kingsbridge Drive to Texas Road is being reduced to one lane in each direction and that is expected to last for the next several weeks, according to the Town of Amherstburg. The partial road closure is to facilitate sanitary forcemain installation. Included with this lane reduction is a speed reduction to 50km/h within the construction zone. This lane reduction is expected to last approximately six weeks when it will be relocated to County Road 20 from Texas Road to St. Arnaud St. Traffic flow will be maintained in this area and residents will be allowed access to residences but delays should be expected. Work on the Edgewater Sewage Diversion – Forcemain Installation project will be ongoing throughout summer 2019, the town states. The town reminds residents that during construction, traffic disruptions may occur and some delays may be experienced. Please slow down and obey all traffic signage, and watch for flagpersons in the construction zone.

The last sentence in this otherwise well-written article contains unnecessary innuendo: “Former Councillor Diane Pouget asked why samples were being taken and why stakes were in the ground, but those questions went unanswered”. As those in attendance know and those who were not should be advised, Sharon Colman was allowed to speak though she was not on the agenda on condition that no questions would be allowed.

That’s why Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche called, “out of order” when Diane Pouget called out from the gallery with her question. Under the conditions that Ms. Colman addressed council, Ms. Pouget’s question could not be answered at that time. I hope this clarifies matters. This is a necessary upgrade which really contrasts the non-essentials observed in the 2019 budget, and we haven’t scratched the surface toward fixing our roads. Thirty-two million reasons why my calls for financial sobriety should be heard loud and clear. Amherstburg’s roads and infrastructure are aging as you well know. Our latest town budget included an eight per cent tax increase over last year’s spending and much of it in my opinion was not necessary, especially in light of this new debt. Roads are falling apart buildings need upgrades new real estate has been acquired by administration and now our water treatment plant is reaching the final stages of its 50-year life expectancy. Town welcomes new director of parks and recreation
he has always considered Amherstburg one of the most livable municipalities in the area. Roberts, who lives in the Gesto portion of Essex, said Amherstburg has culture, history, dining, craft breweries and distilleries and a great waterfront and parks network and he wants to help the town “get better and better.” “It’s always nice to come to a winning team,” he said. Roberts said he looks forward to working with user groups at the Libro Centre as well. “Anything I can help do to make Amherstburg continue as the livable community it is, that is going to be a high priority to me,” he said.
By Ron Giofu The town has a new director of parks, facilities, recreation and culture. Phil Roberts began his new duties March 25 and was introduced to town council that night. His resumé includes more recent stops as the parks and recreation director in Windsor and as the general manager of the Roseland Golf & Curling Club. Roberts graduated from the University of Windsor with a science degree with a particular interest in Earth Sciences. That led to a stop at Point Pelee National Park before moving onto the Halton Region Conservation Authority. Roberts and his family moved back to Essex County when he took a position with the Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA). “I spent a lot of time at Hillman Marsh and Holiday Beach and did a lot of student education programs,” said Roberts. Roberts also got bird banding programs underway at the Holiday Beach Migration Observatory (HBMO) and he was a long-standing president with the Essex County Field Naturalist Club, both organizations he is still involved with. He has also served as a director with the Citizens Environment Alliance and with Jack Miner Bird Sanctuary. “A lot of my career and career interests have been in wildlife and habitat restoration,” said Roberts. “It’s led nicely into a career in parks.” Roberts also spent a portion of his career at Windsor Airport. He started on staff relocating wildlife and worked his way up to where he managed the airport. He spent a total of 23 years at Windsor Airport. Wanting to get back into parks, Roberts decided to seek the director’s role in Amherstburg. “I jumped on the opportunity and here I am,” he said. Noting he has reviewed the town’s parks master plan, Roberts said it’s “a good plan” and hopes to start address-

The potential to develop the former Duffy’s Tavern and Motor Inn property is “of great interest” to Roberts and he added there is some “great opportunities” to turn the Belle Vue into a “showpiece” as well. Roberts believes there is additional eco-tourism opportunities, believing it’s worth exploring further partnerships with ERCA to take advantage of the town’s fall migration route. Whereas Point Pelee is important for birding in the spring, Holiday Beach is key in the summer and Roberts believes there is more potential to take advantage of what is going on “right over our heads.’ “I think there is a great deal of opportunity to explore the eco-tourism footprint for the town of Amherstburg,” he said. “I think I can be a big resource for that.” The new director says he is familiarizing himself with the department and with town operations and added that

Amherstburg Public students focusing on character development By Ron Giofu Students at Amherstburg Public School are focusing on character development with particular themes being resilience and respect. The local public elementary school held a kickoff assembly in which children performed skits and got the rest of the students and staff hyped for the initiative. There is a follow up assembly planned for April to go over each class’ progress. Nicole Loggie, one of the teachers helping to plan the initiative at Amherstburg Public School, said it stems from a project put forth by the Greater Essex County District School Board to take on at least two of the eight character traits the public board is emphasizing. “We started off with the kickoff assembly,” explained Loggie. “All of the classes
Nicole Loggie’s class shows the character traits Amherstburg Public School is focusing on this month. are talking about it and it is becoming part of the conversation happening here at APS.” Students Lee Bergeron, Nya Meloche and Paytin Meloche acted as the masters of ceremonies for the assembly. Bergeron stated
they modified the words to a Rick Astley song and are encouraging their classmates to never give up. Nya Meloche added they find it important to teach messages of resilience and respect to younger students. “You can teach them what it means to be
resilient and respectful to others so they can be resilient and respectful when they get older,” she explained. Paytin added that resiliency is important for people to learn as well as being respectful to others. One of the groups of children putting on a skit as part of the assembly believed it was inspirational to convey the messages of resiliency and respect to their fellow students. Their skit was about cheating on an exam and the negative fallout that can occur by getting caught doing so. “The moral of the story was don’t cheat and be respectful,” said Jack Laliberte. Ravishankar Gurudev and Alex Greason, two of the other students in the play, also underscored the importance of being resilient and respectful, adding that it took a lot of practise to work on the skit for the assembly.

The WSO’s string ensemble, conducted by Daniel Wiley, will be performing that evening at Christ Anglican Church, the latter being in its milestone 200th anniversary year. Event co-ordinator Stephanie Thomson says her objective is to involve as many people, businesses and organizations as she can. She noted the Amherstburg Fort Malden Horticultural Society will be providing funding for floral arrangements to decorate the church with that evening. This year’s theme is “Palladio,” a nod to the unique architecture of the 200-yearold Belle Vue home. The secondary tagline of “It’s all about the bricks” is due Learn to drive the easy way! to Robert Reynolds, the Best Passing Rate & Safety Record! original co-owner of Belle Vue, also ordering enough bricks during that time peWindsor, Lasalle, Essex, riod for the construction of Amherstburg,Tecumseh, Belle River. Geena DiBiase won a trip for two to Barbados on “Live with Kelly and Ryan.” The show’s web page is on the screen behind her. By Ron Giofu The lucky streak continues for the DiBiase family. A member of the family, this time it was daughter Geena, was called as part of a contest by the television show “Live with Kelly and Ryan” for the fifth time with Geena answering the contest question correctly and winning a trip for two to Barbados. This is the fourth time since 2012 the
family has won with the fifth time being a loss last year. Geena said she only entered the contest herself three times with other family members also entering. She got the call last Tuesday around 8 a.m. from the popular morning show. “I thought they were joking,” she said. “I never thought it was possible I would win or get called.” Continued on Page 9

Daughter wins family’s fourth trip in five attempts
Continued from Page 8 After being notified originally at 8 a.m., Geena was called back around 9 a.m. with the question being about the previous day’s show, specifically about where actress Ruth Wilson’s grandparents had met. Geena was asked the question at 9:15 a.m. and had 20 seconds to answer. She hurriedly checked the notes her mother Laura took from the previous day’s show. “I had already watched it,” said Laura. “We had all the points down. We had the answer.” “After we got it right, we started freaking out,” Geena added. Geena stated she was very nervous while on the air and the moments leading up to it, but was very relieved as
well as thrilled after they won. Reaction came quickly and positively. Geena pointed out she had to head to university shortly after winning and she was immediately congratulated. “I had a lot of family texting me, people from work texting me,” she said. “It’s been crazy.” While it is a trip for two to Barbados, it will turn into a trip for five as Laura said they will purchase additional accommodations for her husband Marc and two other daughters Rebecca and Daniella. Other trips the DiBiase family have won included a trip to a horse ranch in Tucson, Arizona in 2012, a trip to Barbados in 2016 and a trip to Grand Cayman in 2017. Laura said her brother-in-law also par-
ticipated in the contest and received a call last September. “It pays to play,” said Laura. The family is likely going to redeem the prize in January, as they want to head to Barbados in the winter. “We already have a vacation planned
in November,” Geena noted. Now that they have won again this year, they are ineligible for another 365 days but the loyal viewers of “Live with Kelly and Ryan” plan on entering next year. The value of the trip Geena won is roughly $8,600 U.S.
Three local sites win TWEPI awards
Continued on Page 6 Connoy also thanked co-owners Tom and Sue Manherz and Larry Girard as well, noting they were at the St. Clair Centre for the Arts to receive it last Thursday. Fort Malden National Historic Site won the award for best historical attraction. “National historic sites like Fort Malden reflect the rich and varied heritage of our nation and provide an opportunity for Canadians to learn more about our diverse history. As such, it is an honour to have Fort Malden National Historic Site nominated by the public and humbling to have it win the award for Best Local Attraction - Historical in a category with top notch friendly competitors such as the Amherstburg Freedom Museum, The Canadian Transportation Museum & Heritage Village, John R. Park Homestead and Willistead Manor,” said Corrine Ross, visitor experience team leader for Fort Malden National Historic Site. “The TWEPI Best of Windsor-Essex Awards are a chance to highlight our local heritage places and to celebrate our role in travel, tourism and quality of life for Windsor and Essex County residents. Parks Canada works with nearby communities to help grow local tourism and create
jobs. Historical attractions are an important part of the travel-tourism menu, and support from our local community keeps us on the map!” King’s Navy Yard Park captured the award for “Best Park.” Mayor Aldo DiCarlo said it was nice to gain the award and believes it was affirmation for the town considering what has been put into the park over the years. He noted many people know Amherstburg as a great place to get an ice cream and walk through the park with it. “On a regional level, we do have a lot of nice places to visit,” he said, adding he is pleased that Amherstburg was recognized during the awards ceremony. A full list of winners can be found at www.bestofwindsoressex.ca. “Now in its fourth year and with a record-breaking numbers of votes, you can see how much Windsor Essex businesses and their fans have embraced the Best of Windsor Essex Awards as a way to establish themselves as leading tourism operators in our region” said Gordon Orr, CEO of Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island, in a press release. “Our goal from the Best of Windsor Essex Awards is to showcase iconic experiences, hidden gems, and everything in between. Use this list as a great way to explore Windsor Essex!”

McNamara helps promote area
Continued from Page 2 “It goes beyond the 1,500 jobs. That’s our concern,” said Naidu. “The industry is doing well, relatively speaking. We’re hoping to take the opportunity to fill some of the gaps they have.” Both McNamara and Naidu pointed out the third shift has been at the FCA Windsor Assembly Plant since 1993 and said they will meet with all stakeholders to try and do “anything and everything we can do.” Despite the negativity from the FCA announcement, McNamara did point out during the luncheon that the area still does have a lot going for it. He noted the many historical sites, craft breweries, distilleries and wineries in the region. He also stated that manufacturing is still “driving the local economy.” The County of Essex remains on solid financial footing, the warden continued, as it is debt-free with a AA+ credit rating. “That’s the highest credit rating a county can ask for,” he said. The county is also spending $30 million to improve roads this year, has an eye on improving its housing stock and will sock away $3.89 million towards its overall contribution to the mega-hospital. “The county is raising $100 million for that project,” he said of the mega-hospital. McNamara said county residents deserve the best quality health care and construction needs to start at the County
Road 42 site sooner rather than later. “The time for talking is over,” he said. “We need to get a shovel in the ground.” The Gordie Howe International Bridge will bring thousands of jobs to the area and those people will buy local produce and even buy locally-made vehicles, he said. The area still needs to diversify its economy and noted there has been recent investments by companies in Windsor-Essex County in recent months. “There are no borders when it comes to jobs in this area,” said McNamara, who is also mayor of Tecumseh. McNamara also quoted his predecessor, former warden and current Lakeshore Mayor Tom Bain, as the region is stronger when it works together. “Teamwork is the best way to approach things,” said McNamara. Essex County has a great trail network, he continued, including the Chrysler Canada Greenway and the Cypher Systems Greenway. “CWATS does so much to promote tourism and encourage residents to have healthy and active lifestyles,” he continued. McNamara also pointed out the work ERCA and the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is doing locally, and also the work being done by the University of Windsor and St. Clair College on the education front. “There is no doubt there are challenges ahead but we will confront them the way we always have and always will,” McNamara concluded.

Amherstburg Ladies Hockey League wraps up successful season By Ron Giofu The Amherstburg Ladies Hockey League (ALHL) wrapped up Sunday night and crowned its 2018-19 champions. Lisa Westlake Windsor Chrysler won the four-team league with a 6-0 win over Team Armitage.com in the championship game at the Libro Centre. WindsorPhotoBooth.com took third prize by defeating the team sponsored by Dr. Carly LeBlanc 2-1 in the preceding game. LeBlanc also played in the game and helped run the league again this year and said it was a successful season. “We just about maxed out the number of players, which is good,” she said. The recreational women’s hockey league had a lot of returning players from last year and the same is anticipated for next season. They had 60 skaters and four goalies this year, including LeBlanc. “We started off with full registration,” she said. “We did lose a couple due to injury.”

The Lisa Westlake Windsor Chrysler team celebrate their ALHL title Sunday night (above) and battle Team Armitage.com in the championship game (left).
The level of interest is good for the league, she added, and bodes well for next season. They were able to give out participation trophies this season to all four teams with the champions getting their names on the big trophy. Registration for next season hasn’t been finalized as of yet, she said, but LeBlanc noted that some players are already contacting her about signing up. The ALHL lasted for 25 weeks, said LeBlanc, with that including two practice weeks at the start of the season and two weeks of playoffs at the end. There was also a banquet this year as well as an annual general meeting. “Next year, we’ll be doing a re-draft so we’ll be shaking up the rosters,” said LeBlanc. LeBlanc said they are already excited for the 2019-20 ALHL season. “We had a great season and I’m looking forward to next year,” she said. The first-ever tyke jamboree hockey tournament was held in Amherstburg last Saturday and Sunday with the host team having games last Saturday night at the Libro Centre. Hansen. “It’s half-ice hockey.” There were 20 teams involved in the tournament with teams not only from Amherstburg and around Essex County involved. Other teams that came to town for the weekend included Brampton, London, Mount Brydges and Mooretown. Hansen explained that Amherstburg tykes went to jamborees last year and wanted to present one themselves. “We decided that we had a beautiful facility so why not present one ourselves?” he stated. Hansen added that holding a tyke jamboree at the
Libro Centre would also further get the town’s “name out there” in the hockey community. “If it’s successful, we can run it again,” said Hansen, “and keep it as an annual event.” The young players also get “the tournament experience,” he said, as many of them are travelling for the first time and being introduced to what it is like to be part of a hockey tournament and to bond as a team. Players and coaches were also encouraged to go to The Fort Fun Centre, he added, and that parents groups held a raffle and vendors were brought in as part of the weekend tournament.

OBITUARY
HOOPER,
James Arthur Terrance (Jim) 1920 – 2019
One of the best and last of the “Greatest Generation” passed away at Sunrise Retirement Home with the same grace and dignity exhibited during his long life. Always a gentleman, he embodied the old fashioned values of respect, good manners and the importance of a strong work ethic. When asked about the secret of longevity, he replied; “It’s not the genes, the glass of red wine, or the walk every day, it’s having a wonderful family.” Dad was a WW2 veteran and served in England, Holland, Germany and Kiska in the Aleutian Islands. He was married during the war years to Geraldine (MacDuff) who died of polio in 1946. Predeceased also by their infant son James in 1945. He began a fresh start in life in 1950 when he married Irene (Boussey) and they enjoyed many happy years together until her death in 2002. He was the son of Jeanette and Archie Hooper and brother to Claude, Phyllis, Carl, Leslie and Ruth, all deceased. Dad’s career took him from Famous Players Theatres to becoming the manager of the former Cleary Auditorium in Windsor where he remained from its inception until his retirement. Along with his wife Irene, he is predeceased by son-in-law, Bob Cleminson, and grandson-inlaw Rick Steffler. He is survived by and ever loved by his daughters Sharon Cleminson (Bill Malone), Maureen Gaunt (Chris), Jamie Hooper (Michel Fournier), and Karen Hooper; his much adored granddaughters Kathleen Steffler, Colleen Kim (Joe), Beth Fisher (Doug), Marie Smith (Ryan) and Jamie McIntosh (Brad). Loved and respected Great Grandpa to Michael Steffler (Alyssa), Matthew Steffler (Angela), Holly Hillen (Chris), Megan and Eric Kim, Samantha and Bobby Fisher, Rylie and Cailyn Smith, and Wynne and Vann McIntosh. Great, great Grandpa to newly born Jack Richard Hillen. Uncle Jim will be missed also by many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to the staff and caregivers at Seasons of Amherstburg and Sunrise Retirement Home in Windsor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Family and friends are invited to gather at Families First, 585 Sandwich St. S., Amherstburg, 519-969-5841 on Saturday, April 13, 2019 for a period of visitation from 12:00pm-2:00pm. A service with Fr. Bill Strang officiating will begin at 2:00 p.m. Cremation has taken place. Share memories, photos, or make a donation at www.FamiliesFirst.ca

When people enter into Heaven They are given wings Danny was given the wings of the wind! He is there every morning As the wind that sweeps me out of bed As I get my day started. He is the gentle breeze That kisses my face in the afternoon sun. He can be seen in the wave of the flowers And the rustling of the leaves in the trees. He is the warm currents That help the eagles soar And the hawks swoop! He is the howling winter wind That moves all my neighbours snow into my yard So I can build the largest snow forts And the prettiest snow angels with my grandkids He will always be with me As the wind at my back Moving me to reach new goals And meet new friends along the way. So let’s not say goodbye, but hello to the wind. As each new day dawns, welcome the wind, And rejoice, starting each new day Whispering, to the wind remembering and smiling :)
Love you Danny, Always & Forever, Mary and Family :)

AND HAS PROVIDED FOR YOUR SALVATION THRU HIS SON JESUS CHRIST If you are not sure of your salvation I pray that you would stop right now and ask Jesus to come into your heart. Don't wait another minute. Here is an important prayer for you. Dear God: I thank you for sending your son Jesus Christ to die for my sins and that I might be saved. I accept him now as my Lord and Saviour and I turn from my past life to a renewed life in you through him. You said in your Word that if I confess with my mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in my heart that God raised him from the dead I would be saved (Romans 10:9). I believe your Word; I believe I am now saved, Thank You Lord.
