By Ron Giofu Donald Harris Sr. wasn’t able to attend the recent basketball game where his “Father of the Year” award was to be presented, so the Amherstburg Freedom Museum brought it to him. Harris was supposed to receive the award prior to the Feb. 1 Windsor Express game, the night the area’s NBL of Canada team partnered with the museum on a Black History Month event, but a health issue prevented him from attending. Sons Blair and Don Jr. accepted that night but arrangements were made so that Harris could receive the award himself. Representatives from the museum – including directors Brenda McCurdy and Phil Alexander and assistant curator Lorene Bridgen-Lennie – attended Harris’ home in Amherstburg to present him his plaque. The award recognizes Harris’ “unwavering devotion to your family and dedication to our community.” When news of the award was put on social media by the Amherstburg Freedom Museum, it caused an outpouring of support, said Bridgen-Lennie. “The amount of congratulatory messages was huge,” said Bridgen-Lennie, telling Harris “everyone recognizes how great you are.” Harris’ 100th birthday comes later this year as he was born in Amherstburg April 25, 1920. He married Mildred Turner in 1942 and they had 12 children. Harris is now the proud grandfather of 56 grandchildren and 99 great-grandchildren and seven great-greatgrandchildren. “Today, he is a familiar face at many town functions and activities along with his present soulmate Janice,” said McCurdy. “I don’t know what to say,” said Harris. “Thank you.” Harris said he has been helping with the Amherstburg Freedom Museum since its inception and worked with founders Mac and Betty Simpson. He recalled seeing a lot in his life including seeing a eppelin fly ing over Amherstburg, meeting people like Joe Louis and Vincent Price and having friends gunned down by members of Al Capone’s crime family. Harris worked for over 30 years at Allied Chemical in Amherstburg, often having to walk to work or go on the back of a friend’s motorcycle as he didn’t have a driver’s license of his own until he was 40. Overall, he said Amherstburg is a good town and the country is as well. Harris expressed satisfaction as he looks back on his life with his 100th birthday approaching. “It’s been a good life,” he said.

ETFO members return to the picket lines last week, more strikes this week By Ron Giofu

Educational workers represented by the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO) returned to the picket lines last week and, barring a settlement with the Ontario government, are back out there this week. Public high school teachers may join them also, assuming there is no settlement on their contract as well. Public elementary teachers and educational support workers hit the picket lines in front of General Amherst igh chool last hursday and riday taff from Malden Central, Amherstburg and Anderdon Public chools were oined y staff from surrounding schools on the lines with some of the picketers also including parents and grandparents. Theresa Litster, who has grandchildren in the system, said she was out on the line to back the teachers and educational workers. “I’m marching alongside the teachers to support them,” said Litster. “I support them at the high school and grade school levels.” Litster said last Thursday was the third time she has marched with educational workers.

Public elementary teachers and educational support workers represented by the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO) march in front of General Amherst High School last Thursday. They were out striking for two days last week and will be out two days this week, if there is no settlement in contract talks with the province. Public high school workers could also be out Thursday as well. RTT Photos by Ron Giofu “I’d like to see more support,” said Litster. “Teachers are going to be losing jobs, kids are going to be losing course options and classes are going to be more crowded than people realize.” Litster added that “e-learning is a no” and that students are going to need tutors to help them with it. Barring any settlements, ETFO workers were set to be on the picket lines again yesterday (Tuesday) and today (Wednesday) with high school workers represented by the OSSTF scheduled to be picketing Thursday. That would mean all Greater Essex County District School Board schools would be closed Thursday, with elementary students only attending school this past Monday due to work stoppages. Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board director of education Terry Lyons posted on the Catholic board’s website that “(w)e have been informed by the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association that as of Feb. 11, 2020 they will be enhancing their administrative job action. We have been informed by OECTA that extracurricular activities and our Kindergarten Registration Open House events scheduled for Feb. 19 should not be affected y this o action According to an A news release, the enhanced administrative job action means that during the regular school day, OECTA members will only undertake their scheduled teaching and su-

pervision duties. They will not accept additional tasks or assignments. Parent-teacher interviews will go ahead if they have been scheduled. If you have any questions or concerns regarding how this action may affect your child please contact you school principal.” Minister of Education Stephen Lecce released a statement on the continued ETFO escalation, stating “our government has put forward reasonable proposals at the negotiating table, including a commitment to maintain full-day kindergarten, and it is deeply disappointing parents are still seeing repeated escalation at the expense of our students to advance higher compensation including more generous ene t plans e rmly believe students should be in class, and we continue to stand ready to negotiate and reach a deal Ontario students deserve.” Regarding the OSSTF escalation, Lecce stated: “Continued escalation of job action by the teachers’ unions has gone on far too long. Students across the province are being hurt by the withdrawal of services and loss of classroom time. Parents expect all parties to meet at the negotiating table and have meaningful, student-centric discussions. I call on union leadership to continue to work with us, in good-faith, to end these strikes, and focus on reaching a deal that keeps our students in the classroom where they belong.”

Michael Gawne appeared at the horticultural society’s meeting Jan. 28 and give information on history scienti c chemistry and medical ene ts of can nabis as well as advice on growing it indoors and outdoors. Gawne said since cannabis’ legalization in Canada, he has been reaching out to organizations like the Amherstburg Fort Malden Horticultural Society to make presentations. “People are interested in knowing how to grow their own,” he said. “I reached out to the (horticultural society) via e-mail.” Gawne said he has a degree in horticultural and works at an organic farm in Leamington. Born and raised in Windsor, he has always had an interest in horticulture and plants. He stated cannabis is a unique plant and is resilient, as it will often keep growing “no matter what you do to it.” “This is something I started doing a year ago once it became legal,” Gawne said of the presentations. A out people attended the meeting at the i ro Centre, where his presentation was held. Gawne noted he is a member of the Essex County Orchid Society and started presenting to that organization before branching out to similar organizations in the Windsor-Essex County region. he presentations last roughly minutes and Gawne said “I try to cover all of their questions.” He said he tries to put as much of his knowledge into his presentations as possible.

New twist being added to this year’s “SOUPer Wednesday” By Ron Giofu The sixth annual “SOUPer Wednesday” event is returning later this month and there is a new twist to it this year. The event will not only feature soups from about a dozen restaurants from the Amherstburg, Harrow and LaSalle areas, but is also scheduled to feature an area school as well. The culinary program from Western Secondary School is scheduled to be on hand serving up one of their soups as well. Culinary teacher Mark Wakeley said he will be bringing some of his students to the Feb. 26 event at the Columbus Community Hall in Amherstburg and the students are already talking about which soup they should be bringing. Carolyn Burgess, one of the senior students in Western’s culinary program, said they are not only excited to compete in the event, but they want to showcase the school as well. “It gives a better look at what happens at our school,” said Burgess. Wakeley said the students themselves will prepare the soup, with him being on hand to guide them. That is similar to what goes on daily at Western Secondary as culinary students prepare hot breakfasts and lunches for their fellow students. “ m e cited to show off the skills the estern stu dents have to offer ” he said Austin Lauzon, another senior student, said while there are students at Western with special needs, they can still do a lot of things and get a lot accomplished. “We’re able to use the stoves, the immersion blenders, everything,” said Lauzon. Lauzon added he has also taught his mom how to cook certain dishes. Many of the soups and other dishes they prepare often sell out, Wakeley added. The “SOUPer Wednesday” event is presented annually by Amherstburg Community Services (ACS). It will run 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and is sponsored by Re/ Max realtors John D’Alimonte and Kim Wheeler, Seasons Amherstburg and Dollars & Cents Investments

Villanova students getting ready for upcoming performances of “Grease” By Ron Giofu Students at St. Thomas of Villanova Secondary School are turning back the clock to the 1950’s with this year’s musical. Villanova will be performing “Grease” later this month and rehearsals have been ongoing since October for the show. Upwards of 60 students are in the cast with about 30 in lead roles. “It’s a large cast,” said Alexa Monaco, who will be playing “Sandy” in the show. Monaco added things are coming together as the six show dates approach. “Rehearsals are going well,” she said. Monaco said the cast is close-knit and that rehearsals have been “productive” thus far. “(The cast) gets together outside of school too,” said Monaco. “We have a really strong bond.” Jackson Balint, who plays the lead role of “Danny” in most of the shows and “Roger” in the others, said they have a “big group” to work with but agreed they work well together. “Our talent at Villanova is extraordinary,” said Balint. “It’s very exciting to see.” Both students are graduating this year meaning this will be their final performances at Villanova. Monaco said she has been involved all four years of high school, adding she has enjoyed the relationships she has built with other students. “I love to sing and act,” she said, noting she writes her own music and has just released the song “Outcast.” Balint also said he has been involved all four years of high school. “Performing and acting is just my passion,” he said.

Actors in the upcoming performance of “Grease” act out one of the scenes in the show. Six performances are being presented by St. Thomas of Villanova Secondary School later this month. The cast at Villanova is hard working, Balint added, stating “it warms my heart. It’s so beautiful.” Balint hopes to be part of the Fine Arts program at the University of Windsor next year and has also been part of Cardinal Music Productions’ “Les Misérables” performance as well as a few short films. Monaco added she is nervous but excited as the show dates for “Grease” get closer. “I think it’s more exciting than anything else,” she said. Balint added “I’m not worried” and believes the performance is coming together well. The show is being directed by Villanova teacher Mary-Jo Grado with Ann Marie Brunet being the musical director. Jenna Borrelli is the assistant director while Doug Drouillard. Shows are Feb. 21 at 7 p.m., Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. and Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. as well as the following weekend including Feb. 27 at 7 p.m., Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. and Feb. 29 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and students, students 12 and under and seniors $10. All tickets are $10 for the Feb. 23 and Feb. 27 performances. They can be purchased in advance at Villanova or at the door the night of the show.

Start Fresh

Alexa Monaco and Jackson Balint – a.k.a. Sandy and Danny – will be two of the leads in the upcoming performance of “Grease”.

ATA disputes police savings during recent meeting By Ron Giofu Members of the Amherstburg Taxpayers Association gathered recently for a meeting with the savings the town has incurred since switching policing to Windsor being the main topic. The ATA received a presentation from local lawyer Anthony Leardi, who maintained the town will not see any savings over the rst ve years Accord ing to statistics provided by Leardi, he pegged the total transition costs at just over million when factoring in severance pay top up pay consultant fees 2019 and 2020 legal fees, the chief’s contract, new radios and equipment. Of the latter, Leardi told the ATA members in attendance, the value of the equipment was over $1.1 million in 2018 dollars that was transferred to Windsor for $1. eardi calculated the million to e over ve years and said on going costs such as the building, dispatching, radios and debt charges see that number grow to just over $755,000. Coupled with what is being paid to Windsor over the rst ve years of the contract eardi s gures range from million paid out in to over million in e concluded there were no sav ings to taxpayers, with or without the purchase of new police radios. Cries of “we got screwed” came up from ATA members following Leardi’s presentation. Bob Rozankovic, president of the ATA and the former chair of the Amherstburg Police Services Board, said an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) bid wasn’t possible as the OPP couldn’t give Amherstburg a bid with the resources the town said it wanted. “These numbers look good,” Rozankovic added, of Leardi’s presentation. “I can’t argue with any of them.” Leardi added he showed the presentation to former board members, who had no objection. Former board member Frank Cleminson told the group he
