Renovations celebrated at “Ribs & Ragtime” By Jonathan Martin

For the 10th year, Amherstburg Freedom Museum (AFM) celebrated African-Canadian heritage with Ribs & Ragtime. Hundreds gathered for the sold-out fundraiser. Windsor-based jazz band Black Orchid provided the tunes and volunteers served the catered food. Due to the number of attendees, AFM president Monty Logan said the event underwent a reconfiguration. “We had to move things around to make room,” he said. “The band had to face the other way this year and we had to move some tables around.” The most noticeable of the changes was the placement of a large, plastic cheque just in front of the band. AFM received $119,700 from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) for earlier this year. Saturday, Logan showed off where that money went. “We got rid of the drop ceiling, got rid of the clutter, added new lighting,” he said. “Essentially, this capital infrastructure funding allowed us to better utilize the place on the inside.” On the outside, AFM has earmarked funding for roof replacement. The roof is made of cedar, though, and this spring has been too wet to execute the

plan so far. Logan did note that the museum’s log cabin has received new siding. “The impact of this Ontario Trillium Foundation grant cannot be underestimated,” said Mary-Katherine Whelan, curator/administrator. “This grant has allowed much needed renovations to be made. These renovations ensure the safeguarding of the museum’s collections, historic properties and permanent galleries, all of which focus on presenting and preserving the history of Underground Railway in Canada and legacies of those Freedom Seekers and their descendants who built their lives in Essex County during and after that period. The OTF Grant allows the museum to continue sharing this history and educating the public on this often overlooked and important historic movement in Canada and Essex County.” Amherstburg’s deputy mayor, Leo Meloche, was one of the event’s hundreds of attendees. “Museums are very important to the fabric of our society,” he said. “We use historical information, the knowledge of where we’ve been, when we try to figure out where we want to head together as a society.”

Portion of Concession 5 North to be rebuilt, town council not impressed with the costs By Ron Giofu A portion of Concession 5 North will be rebuilt but town council is not pleased that it is over-budget. The stretch of that roadway between Alma St. and County Road 10 (Middle Side Road) will be reconstructed at a cost of roughly $2.4 million. The town had budgeted $2 million for the work. Councillor Peter Courtney was angered with the report, stating Concession 5 North needs work but he didn’t like the inflated price. Councillor Michael Prue was also concerned about the rising costs, and questioned whether the town should go

ahead with the project and devote the $2.4 million to other projects. “Is it not better to take the money and spend it on other roads where we might get a better deal?” asked Prue. Manager of engineering Todd Hewitt noted that engineering work on the road was already performed in 2018 and that the road ranked third and fourth on the town’s roads needs study. “The road needs to be done,” he said. CAO John Miceli noted that that projects like the Gordie Howe International Bridge will impact the construction prices and that a trend of higher prices could be the norm for the next several years around the region.

The matter has been discussed in meetings with other CAO’s, he added, and that one strategy could be to defer projects and build up a reserve until prices come back down. Miceli also noted that it is getting late in the construction season and that a better value may not be found should council try and shift priorities. Councillor Donald McArthur said it is a tough situation to be in but the message of poor roads was one heard loud and clear during the last election. “We have to fix that road,” said McArthur. Later in the meeting, McArthur also addressed a section of Concession 5

North not covered by the tender, and that is the portion near County Road 8. He said he heard from a resident about the poor condition of that road. “It’s a little dangerous on the far end,” he said. Administration said it is on the list of repairs this year but the frequent rain events have delayed the repairs. Resident Nancy Atkinson called that stretch of the road “horrendous” and said recent repairs have only made things worse. She said there are now three holes in the road as well as cracks and a dip. “That area is a disaster right now,” said Atkinson.

Town council changes street name in Kingsbridge South By Ron Giofu A street name similarity in Kingsbridge South that was talked about at council earlier this year has come to a conclusion. Town council passed a bylaw changing Marsh Drive to Landor Drive at its meeting Monday night in an effort to eliminate confusion with nearby Marsh Court. While there were questions from some residents who live on Marsh/Landor Drive, town council members cited public safety as their main reason for changing the name. Mary and David Vandermuren asked council a series of questions including one that had been asked at the previous council meeting regarding

larger signage to see if that would work rather than changing the name. “I’d sooner put a band aid (on the situation) rather than go for stitches right away,” said David. David also questioned how long it would take for GPS and Google maps to be updated, a concern shared by fellow resident Michael Stacyszyn. Stacyszyn pointed out his wife has had health issues and would have difficulty giving directions if someone had to find their home. Councillor Peter Courtney asked fire chief Bruce Montone about GPS, with Montone stating it could be updated within 30 days with emergency crews using the old street name in the meantime. Courtney also said they chose to change Marsh Drive and the addresses of its 11 homes over Marsh Court and its

eight homes due to Marsh Court already having the proper designation as a court. “It made sense to leave Marsh Court. It is already worded properly,” he said. Richard Harvey, who lives on Marsh Court, said he supported the name change as his wife also has had health issues as have other neighbours. Harvey counted three times where emergency crews went to the wrong home due to the confusion of similar named streets. “We’ve been dealing with this for quite a number of years,” said Harvey. Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche pointed out the town will pick up costs for residents relating to their addresses being changed.

Anderdon Public’s Class of ‘69 holds 50th reunion By Ron Giofu It was a night filled with laughter and memories of one of the best times of their lives. A group of former Anderdon Public School students and four former teachers gathered at Fox Glen Golf Club last Friday night for their 50-year class reunion. The Class of 1969 swapped stories, looked at old photos and recalled their days at the public elementary school. “People are here from as far as British Columbia, Port Stanley, Hamilton, outside of London as well as local residents from Amherstburg, Windsor and Essex,” said Anna (DeThomasis) Savo, one of the organizers. Savo was joined on the organizing committee by Marian (Finn) Cote, Nancy (Jones) Tynski, Liz (Meloche) Skeates, Joanne (Meloche) Mancini and Gloria Morency. “We’re missing about ten of us,” said Savo. “We’ve lost some too.” A table was set up with photos and memories of teachers and students from the 1969 graduating class that have since passed away. The retired teachers included Ian Griffiths, Lonnie Jones, Bob Ellis and Jean Hodolich. Bill Patrick, Grant Balsdon and Ray Kenney were unable to attend. The idea had been talked about by the committee members and friends for several years before finally things came together this year. They spent much of the last year reaching out to former classmates and enjoyed doing so. “They’ve gone all over the place now,” said Savo. “With Facebook, e-mail and pictures on Facebook, we were able to get quite a few.” Savo said they enjoyed their days at Anderdon Public School, a feeling echoed by Morency. “A committee of us got together and thought it would be an excellent idea,” Morency said of the reunion. “Fifty years is a big occasion. We’re excited. It’s been very pleasant putting it together. It was a very pleasurable journey to do this.” The response was “amazing,” she added, and that “we’re grateful and appreciative that everything came together.” Tynski told the group before dinner that the committee would meet as friends and talk about it but finally decided to act on it before it was too late. “We just feel grateful,” she said. “This is a time of our lives where we are reflective.”

Gibson Gallery marks 50th birthday with new exhibit By Ron Giofu

Barb Cozens and David Cozens stand beside a painting of the Gibson Gallery done by Mary Celestino. Barb is the gallery’s longest-serving board member while David is the current president.

The Gibson Gallery’s 50th birthday is being celebrated this year and the current exhibit marks the occasion. “Celebrating 50 Years of the Gibson Gallery” opened June 4 and a reception was held Sunday afternoon. The exhibit features over 50 pieces of art by artists who have previously had shows at the Gibson Gallery over the past five decades. Dave Cozens, the current president of the Fort Malden Guild of Arts and Crafts, noted the Gibson Gallery opened June 22, 1969. The guild is the body that runs the gallery. The building is 123-years-old, having been built as a Michigan Central Railroad station in 1896 and Cozens noted that it was purchased in 1968 by the guild. “The deal was orchestrated by Hazen Price through his involvement with the Harrow Farmers Co-op, with a donation by Florence Gibson – hence the name Gibson Gallery,” he said. Over the years, the caboose was purchased, upgrades were made to all parts of the building, the bricks were restored, a new slate roof was put on and new fencing and lighting were installed. The next upgrade, should everything go according to plan, will be a new LED exterior sign at the road so that more people will discover the gallery. “Congratulations are due to the hundreds of volunteers, committee members and board members that have not only preserved this facility, but have significantly improved it over the past 50 years,” he said. “Thanks also to the

various guilds that meet here weekly including stitchers, painters and knitters, and the children’s classes provided year-round by our student instructors. We are also greatly indebted to the many artists that supported us by exhibiting here. All of this helps keep the gallery thriving.” Barb Cozens, Dave’s wife and the longest serving current board member, said she joined in 1980 as a way to meet new people. She recalled the gallery not having many board members and it struggled when it came time to do repairs with members having to donate. “Now, we are quite healthy,” she said. “We’ve come a long way.” Barb said she didn’t think she would be involved with the gallery as long as she has been, and has served in many ways including as president and treasurer. “It’s something I can’t see myself doing without,” she said. Trudy Dempsey, chair of the exhibit committee, said the Gibson Gallery is run by “a very dedicated group of volunteers” with the only paid employees being office administrator Bonnie Deslippe and student employee Rachel Fitzgerald. “We’re not just an art gallery. We’re a community gallery as well,” said Dempsey. The Gibson Gallery is located at 140 Richmond St. in Amherstburg and is open Tuesday-Sunday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is free and donations are accepted. “The Amherstburg Freedom Museum serves as a reminder of the role our community played in the Underground Railway for Freedom Seekers to find refuge from slavery,” said Essex MPP Taras Natyshak. “The museum continues to inspire generations of Canadians, sharing our nation’s history of providing hope, opportunity, and freedom for those seeking a better life. It is an honour to celebrate the Ontario Trillium Foundation grant award to the Amherstburg Freedom Museum of $119 700. The grant will ensure the museum and historic Taylor Log Cabin continue to inspire generations, while serving as a reminder of

the core values our nation is founded.” Dan Allan, chair of the OTF selection committee, delivered the cheque to AFM. He said OTF’s grant review team was unanimous in its decision to award the money to AFM. “The space is fantastic,” he said. “(AFM) has done a wonderful job. They’ve digitized a lot of the collection, which I think will really appeal to the younger population who are used to playing with that kind of stuff.” Logan said he’s pleased with how the event turned out, with only one point of disappointment. “Being sold out, we had to turn people away,” he said.

McGregor Music Festival “very likely” hits fundraising goal By Jonathan Martin McGregor’s 30th annual music festival “very likely” reached its $50,000 goal, Sue LeClair, the festival’s chairperson, said. The official numbers won’t be out until July, but “well over 500 people” had already passed through the gate at Co-An Park by around 5 p.m. Sunday. One of the key events of the day was a pig auction, which LeClair said raised $1,900, doubling last year’s final bid. The car show featured 65 cars and 13 golf carts rolled up for the golf cart decorating contest. C2C Entertainment, the All-Nighters Band, All-Star Country, Brand X Live, Exit 31, Jammin’ 4 Wellness, Lookin’ Back and Bad Moustache provided this year’s entertainment at the McGregor Music Festival. The funds raised at the event go toward treating cancer in Windsor, Currently LeClair said. Over the

past 29 years, the festival has raised over $300,000 for the Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation, but LeClair said there’s more work to be done. Three of the committee’s own members succumbed to the disease over the past year. Specific projects the money will go towards will be the patient assistance fund and a RHINO Laryngoscope. “I’ve been here since the festival started and I hope to be here when we hit year 50,” she said. “We have more draws than we did at the start, better prizes, great sponsors, more community support, great bands and a great team to put it all together.” LeClair said it takes between 60 and 100 people to put the event on. “It’s a long day,” she said. “But definitely worth it.”

Mike Wells of the Hospice Wellness Band sings at McGregor’s 30th annual music festival last Sunday afternoon. Proceeds from the event go to treating cancer in Windsor. This year’s fundraising goal is $50,000, with news of whether they hit that or not expected in July. RTT PHOTO BY JONATHAN MARTIN

Catholic Women’s League hosts “High Tea Party”

About 112 people attend annual event By Ron Giofu The St. John the Baptist Catholic Women’s League were in high spirits at their “High Tea Party.” About 112 women participated in the recent event at the Columbus Community Hall, slightly down from the 120 people that they usually average. Mary Brown, one of the members of the CWL, said they host the annual event to help raise money to assist them in giving grants to local organizations and projects. “Our organization believes in helping others in need,” Brown explained. “We’re a group of ladies from St. John the Baptist Church who meet once a month.” Brown and CWL president Mary Verstick added they try and keep the money local.

“If anyone has approached us and has a need, we as a group will vote on which charity we donate to,” said Brown. The fact attendance was down slightly this year was likely due to competing events, including the town’s “Garden Tea Party” and other events that were being held in Windsor. However, Verstick pointed out it is usually a sell-out. Verstick added there are local CWL members that participant in a CWL conference every year. This year’s conference was in Windsor and she reported it was “very well attended.” The local CWL also does a variety of activities, including monthly talks. Brown said one of the recent talks focused on water conservation and provided tips on how to not waste water.

Bonnie Reeves, Janet Annison, Darlene Bennett, Judy MacKinnon and June McManemy were just some of the ladies that took part in the Catholic Women’s League’s “High Tea Party” at the Columbus Community Hall.

Lawsuit between CAO, former mayoral candidate to proceed Motion dismissed by judge in defamation suit between John Miceli and Glenn Swinton city. The posts were later removed but Swinton did not apologize, as Miceli had asked. Richard Pollock, Miceli’s lawyer, said his client is concerned about his reputation and noted Amherstburg had six CAO’s in five years before Miceli’s arrival. Pollock stated that “Mr. Miceli has a right to protect his reputation” and that there is now a motion before the courts for a summary judgment with a hearing date for that not set as of yet. Pollock described his client as “a dedicated public servant who makes recommendations to council. It is council who makes decisions in the town, not Mr. Miceli. To suggest otherwise is ludicrous.” Pollock added that “to my knowledge, he’s done an excellent job win

the town.” Miceli is seeking $70,000 for defamation and $20,000 for aggravated, punitive and exemplary damages, as well as an injunction prohibiting Swinton from publishing or broadcasting statements “which the plaintiff maintains suggest he is mendacious, corrupt, incompetent, or is responsible for criminal acts,” Bondy reported in his ruling. None of the allegations or claims have been proven in court. “The Courts of Justice Act allows the Defendant to attempt to knock out the Plaintiff’s action in the early stages. The Defendant attempted to do that. The attempt did not succeed. The legal action now continues through the court process,” Leardi stated in an e-mail to the RTT.

Wednesday

The defamation lawsuit brought by chief administrative officer (CAO) John Miceli against a former mayoral candidate will proceed now that a motion has been dismissed. Justice Christopher M. Bondy dismissed the motion brought forth by Glenn Swinton and his lawyer Anthony Leardi following a one-day hearing on the matter. The motion was dismissed by Bondy in a mid-May ruling. The motion was brought forward by the defendant “on the basis it is a ‘SLAPP suit’ (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) and that to allow it to continue would have the effect of limiting public debate,” Bondy stated.

“I conclude on the evidentiary record before me, and for the purposes of this motion, that the potential damage to Mr. Miceli far outweighs the public interest in protecting this type of expression. I conclude that the harm likely to be or which has been suffered by the plaintiff as a result of the defendant’s expression is sufficiently serious that the public interest in permitting the proceeding to continue outweighs the public interest in protecting that expression,” Bondy wrote in his ruling. The lawsuit was filed last year over Facebook postings by Swinton. Posts related to the switchover from the Amherstburg Police Service to the Windsor Police Service as well as a court case involving a City of Windsor employee over a matter that occurred while Miceli was still employed by the

Villanova raises $40,000 at recent Relay for Life By Ron Giofu St. Thomas of Villanova Secondary School stepped up again this year in the fight against cancer. The Catholic high school’s annual Relay for Life event was held Friday in conjunction with the Canadian Cancer Society. Approximately 400 students participated by raising at least $60 each, the minimum requirement to be able to take part. “It’s our biggest Relay for Life yet,” said Elizabeth Sauve, the head of the student-run organizing committee. Sauve said when the donations were counted, it showed Villanova had raised approximately $40,000. She added they were pleased with the level of support. “It’s really awesome,” said Sauve. “We are so excited.” “It’s really touching to see all of the people come out to support the cause,” added committee member Sante Fallea,

A “Survivor’s Lap” kicked off the recent Relay for Life” event at St. Thomas of Villanova Secondary School. The school raised $40,000 this year. adding that some students raised over $1,000 while companies also pitched in with donations. People were going “above and beyond,” said Sauve. Fallea added that “we are all here because cancer has touched our lives.

I am no different.” He added that there will be 131,300 new cases of cancer diagnosed in Canada this year. “These are our families, friends and neighbours,” he said. “These are the people we care about.” Progress has been made in the fight

against cancer and Fallea pointed out there have been improved survival rates and additional research. He implored his fellow students to keep up the fight. “Cancer changes everything,” he said. “So can you. By getting involved in the Relay for Life, we are joining over 25,000 students in Ontario and 150 high schools. Together, we are stronger than cancer.” The Relay for Life was not only to raise money and awareness but “a party with a purpose,” with fellow committee member Matteo Majalli pointing out the Canadian Cancer Society’s mission is to eradicate cancer and improve the lives of those battling it. “We envision a world where no one fears cancer,” he said. Students participated in a number of activities throughout the afternoon and evening, including walking a lap around the school’s track with survivors, playing games, having a barbecue and an evening luminary ceremony.

Public has their say in Beaudoin Park improvements By Ron Giofu

Beaudoin Park will be getting upgrades this year and the town’s parks and recreation department wanted to hear what the public’s ideas are for it. The park, located within the River Canard subdivision, was the subject of an open house at Amherstburg Fire Station #2. Town council devoted $170,000 in upgrades to the aging park and director of parks, recreation and culture Phil Roberts and parks manager Annette Zahaluk were on hand answering questions and

taking suggestions from residents. A pair of local youths, Bethany and Andrew Adams, came with their father to the open house and were in favour of new equipment. Bethany explained they do daily physical activities at her school but there is little to do when they go to the park. “It will be nice to do more things there,” she said.

Continued on Page 23 Andrew and Bethany Adams take a look at some of the Beaudoin Park drawings that the town had prepared as part of a recent open house.

Admirals hold official signing ceremony for five new players By Ron Giofu There are five new players signed to the Integrity Amherstburg Admirals with the coaches and management of the Jr. C team telling those players they still can’t sit back and rest on their laurels. The Admirals welcomed right wing Josh Bennett, left wing Mitchell Demelo, defensemen Patrick Godin and Jaxon Boucher and goalie Nicholas Bolton at a special Sunday morning signing ceremony in the Admirals’ dressing room at the Libro Centre. The five players were smiling as they signed their paperwork and were welcomed by co-owner Wes Ewer, general manager Greg Crain, head coach Paul Bortignon, assistant coaches Eric Shaw and Marc Crevier and assistant general manager Craig Russett. “It’s going good. I feel good about it,” said Bennett. “I’m excited to be signing here.” Bennett said he brings skills as a goal

He said after meeting Crain, Ewer and Bortignon, that he thought well of them and wanted to join the Admirals. He played with Windsor AAA last season. Demelo said “it feels good” to be signing

in Amherstburg, which is his hometown. “It feels nice to know you are part of the team,” said Demelo. Demelo said he brings play making and goal scoring to the table, and looks forward to doing it for his local team.

“It’s close to home. I grew up watching them,” said Demelo of why he signed with the Admirals. Godin said he brings the ability of making a good first pass and providing offense from the blue line to the Admirals. “I’m excited for the season to start,” said Godin, who played in Tecumseh last season. “I can’t wait.” Godin added that Amherstburg seems like a good fit for him to play the next phase of his hockey career. Bolton, who also played in Tecumseh last year, said he was “happy to be here. It’s good to know where I’m playing next year.” The goaltender said he plays a simple game where he goes out, stops the puck and “I don’t overdo stuff.” Bolton said he came to the Admirals because of how the team pursued him. “They showed me the most interest,” he said. “I appreciate that.”

Lady Gens slo-pitch season ends in disappointment By Ron Giofu The General Amherst Lady Gens’ girls slo-pitch season didn’t end the way they wanted it to, but most will be back to try again this year. The Lady Gens were unable to

General Amherst defeated L’Essor 15-8 and Villanova 13-2 last Monday but their bats went cold the following day as they lost their only two games they played. The Cavaliers would eke out a 4-3 win over General Amherst to advance to the finals, where they ended up winning the championship. Sr. Cardinals beat Woodslee Jrs., lose in Tecumseh Amherstburg shortstop Brady Levack leaps to make the catch during last Wednesday night’s game at the Libro Centre against the Woodslee junior team, won by Amherstburg 10-9. The Cardinals are back in action tonight at home at 7:30 p.m.

Amherstburg now 2-2 on the 2019 baseball season By Ron Giofu The rain finally let up and the Amherstburg Cardinals senior baseball team was able to return to the diamond last week. The Cardinals, who had three of their first five games rained out, returned to the Libro Centre last Wednesday night for a game against the Woodslee Orioles junior team. It was a high scoring affair, won by the Cardinals 10-9. Matt Lepine, who pitched the last two innings for Amherstburg, said they had a high

batting average with runners on base and believed they had solid pitching. Lepine said they weren’t able to get many practices in due to the rain but believed the energy from the dugout helped. He said they were loud on the bench throughout last Wednesday night’s game against Woodslee and focused all game, believing they should play like that going forward. Lepine was also pleased with how he pitched in Wednesday night’s game against the Orioles.

All but one member of slo-pitch team eligible to return Continued from Page 15

That loss meant General Amherst would have to play Leamington in the next game and the Lions won that game 7-2 to eliminate the Lady Gens. “I felt like yesterday was the stronger game for us,” said Elyssa Grondin. “Today, our hitting wasn’t doing so good. Our defense was strong though.” Grondin pointed out most of the girls are eligible to return next year, as only Ramie Tytgat is graduating. She added that most of the girls play fast-pitch so they will continue improving as players. Lauren Baillargeon, one of the Grade 9 players on

this year’s team, said they were coached well and the players had a lot of fun. “It was a great season overall,” said Baillargeon after Tuesday’s games. “I thought we fell short today.”

Both Grondin and Baillargeon were unable to compete in the playoff tournament due to injuries. “It’s hard not playing but I loved being here to cheer on the team,” said Grondin.

Crain pointed out that training camp is in late August, followed by three exhibition games. The regular season starts in mid-September. “We’re going to run a fast tempo,” said Crain. “(The players) are going to have to be in great shape.” Bortignon added that “it’s a pretty cool time” for the players as they transition from minor hockey to junior hockey, and credited Crain and Russett for finding the players. While signing with the team is great, he added, they need to still compete to stay with the team. “It’s not a warning,” he said. “It speaks to how your work ethic needs to be to bring it to the next level.” Bortignon said they want kids to be Admirals and have Amherstburg to be their first choice, and congratulated the new signees. “It’s a great day for you guys,” he said.

Local couples renew their vows as part of Christ Church’s 200th anniversary By Jonathan Martin Two-by-two, 24 people approached the Sanctuary in Amherstburg’s 200-year-old Christ Anglican Church. They faced each other, took each others’ hands and said, in unison, “Gracious God, we remember with thanksgiving our vows of love and commitment to You and to each other in marriage. “We pray for Your continued blessing. “May we learn from our joys and sorrows and discover new riches in our life together in You. “We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. “Amen. Twenty-four people renewed their wedding vows on the church’s 200th anniversary. One of them was the parish’s priest, Father Bill Strang. “I kind of blind-sided (my wife), he said, laughing. “We had talked about renewing our vows, but I don’t think she fully expected it. Anne Restoule had her vows renewed with her husband as part of the Sunday afternoon service. She said the two have been married for 33 years. “When I was up there, all I could think was, ‘This is the man I married and I still love him all these years later,’ she said. “It was just me and him up there. It didn’t feel like anyone else was here. It was our moment to share together. Restoule said it was nice that she got to share the afternoon with the other 11 couples, though. “This church is like an extended family, she said.

Anne Restoule embraces her husband at Christ Anglican Church in Amherstburg last Sunday afternoon. Restoule renewed her wedding vows after 33 years of marriage.

“I’m glad that we got to renew our vows with all of our friends. Once the ceremony was completed, the couples dug into a celebratory cake and laughed, hugged and took pictures. “These are great people, Restoule said. Christ Anglican Church will be having a 200th anniversary gala Sept. 21. Tickets are $80 and are limited. For tickets or information for the gala, contact Cheryl at 519-736-2281. The event will be held under a tent at the church, located at 317 Ramsay St.

22- COMMUNITY NEWS - Wednesday, June 12, 2019

www.rivertowntimes.com

LaSalle River Canard Catholic Family of Parishes Dear Parishioners of Sacred Heart, St. Joseph & St. Paul, After the Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus into heaven, the Apostles locked themselves in an upper room. The One that they had loved and followed was gone from their sight and they were afraid. Pentecost gifted them with the Holy Spirit who called them to become intentional disciples. They proclaimed the Good News with great joy and the Church was born. With no written guidelines, the early Christians gathered for the breaking of the bread and for sharing their stories of Jesus. In 2019, we find ourselves in a similar situation. We gather for Eucharist and we share our faith. We are fearful of the unknown, as we face the changes that are now required of us. With hearts open to the gifts of the Holy Spirit, we are called to go beyond our Church buildings to proclaim the Good News with great joy to the whole world! The Church must continue to be reborn. The “LaSalle River Canard Catholic Family of Parishes” will come to life on July 2nd,2019. Bishop Fabbro has appointed a Pastor, Associate Pastor and Pastoral Team to serve our three parishes. Two members from each parish were selected to serve on the Transition Team. Their goal has been to gather regularly to pray, discuss, discern and decide how our three parishes could best share our gifts and talents with one another. Building on our personal histories, our primary focus is to remain vibrant and outreaching as a Family of Parishes. We will celebrate our Catholic faith and work together to ensure that we keep Jesus at the centre of our lives. We will continue to focus on hospitality, vibrancy in our celebration of the Eucharist, catechesis and outreach. This new model will call forth a missionary spirit that requires that we move beyond what is familiar and comfortable, and go forth into the world encouraging all whom we encounter to enter into a personal relationship with Jesus. The Transition Team has been developing a plan for our Family that is based on consensus, a Mass Time Schedule based on the availability of two priests, planning for the integration of ministries and committees and working on a Pastoral Plan that will ensure our spiritual growth. Many items still need our attention. The Transition Team is dependent on the Holy Spirit in the many considerations that must be discerned. Some of the decisions may need to be re-visited as we move forward so that necessary adjustments can be made based on our lived experience. I thank the Transition Team and encourage you to share your concerns and suggestions with them. Please pray the prayer for our Family of Parishes. Like the first Christians, may we boldly proclaim Jesus Christ as Our Lord and God, creating a Family of Parishes centered on Jesus! Your servant in Christ, Father Dwayne Adam, Pastor

LaSalle River Canard Catholic Family of Parishes Prayer God our Father, as sisters and brothers of Jesus, we offer You thanks for the love that You have poured into our hearts. Grant strength to this new family of parishes and keep us faithful in Your service. May the Sacred Heart of Jesus empower us with His merciful love! May we experience the humility of St. Joseph in embracing these changes and the conversion of St. Paul so that we may proclaim the Gospel to ALL whom we encounter! We pray that Your Spirit will bless us so that Jesus may remain at the centre of our lives! Amen.

Learn & Lead program launched By Haley Rose The Firehorse Leadership Organization held it’s Learn and Lead launch last week at the Gibson Gallery. This organization was built from a dream. Literally. Founder, Michelle Stein, recalled how one night her horse spoke to her in a dream. Since 2013 that dream has become a reality and is now helping to connect horsemanship and leadership. “We are the future. It’s what we say and what we leverage that sparks the fire,” Stein said. A variety of programs are run throughout the organization. Participants first start out registering for summer camp. As they get older they can then work their way up to becoming volunteers. And finally, be emerging leaders, like the Learn and Lead group. Nico Fox, 13-year-old Stella Marris student, has been involved in the organization for the last six years. “I love learning new skills and how I can apply leadership to horsemanship and vice versa,” said Fox. He explained that once he started riding horses he was hooked and loved being in the environment. Fox is one of many young teens in the group who are working together to take the reins and define what leadership means to them. The shared love for the equestrian lifestyle extends to Firehorse’s community partner, Sarah Parks Horsemanship. SPH is owned and operated by Sarah Parks, a certified Horsemanship Association Accredited Instructor.

Her riding programs help students to focus on be confident riders while learning basic principles and developing the leader inside each student. Inspiring youth is something one of the Learn and Lead program’s community sponsors, Libro Credit Union, is also passionate about. For the last five years Libro has been partnering with the organization. And has since donated $21,000 to continue to make programs like Learn and Lead possible. Firehorse is currently running a spring cleaning fundraiser. Anyone with unused household or office supplies is asked to drop items off at one of the following three locations: Colasanti’s in Kingsville, The Storage Box on County Rd 42 in Windsor or Busy Homez in Amherstburg. Anyone that can fill the back of a pickup truck or horse trailer with donations will be given a ballet for a chance to win one of three prizes from: Sarah Parks Horsemanship, Sun Parlour Rodeo or Harmony Day Spa. For more information on events or to learn more about Firehorse or Sarah Parks Horsemanship visit Firehorse Leadership Organization.

Major Golf Ontario tournament coming to Pointe West Special to the RTT A major amateur golf tournament is coming to Amherstburg. Pointe West Golf Club has announced it is hosting the 2019 Golf Ontario Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship. Tournament dates are June 18-20. The warm up day is June 17. The Mid-Amateur Championship was first contested in 1993 and will be played for the 26th time in 2019. The event features Ontario’s best amateur golfers age 25 and over and competitors gain entry into the event through sectional qualifiers or through

exemptions. Participating golfers include Pointe West members John Saffran, Mark Robson, Mike Steffler, Neil Rooke and other local golfers include John Zdonek, Scott Davis, Scott Rutgers, Mike Rutgers, Doug Hoppe, Ryan Clark, Patrick Michaud and Jamie Drysdale. Competitors gain entry into the event through one of ten qualifiers or through previous exemption. Past Champions of the event include Ontario Golf Hall of Fame members Stu Hamilton (1993, 1998), Kelly Roberts (1997), Dave Bunker (2007, 2011, 2014) and defending Champion Garrett Rank. An estimated 156 golfers are expected to compete

during the tournament. Rick Schmidgall, director of golf at Pointe West, said it is the second most prestigious event for males on the Golf Ontario calendar. He noted that people will have to walk the course if they want to watch the 54-hole competition. Spectators are encouraged to come out to attend the event and watch some of the best amateur golfers in Ontario. There is no cost for spectators to attend the event. Pointe West Golf Club, designed by architect Thomas McBroom, was established in 1989 and is celebrating their 30th anniversary this year.

By Jonathan Martin Volleyballs burned through the air at the 30th annual J. “Wimpy” Tiefenbach Memorial Volleyball Tournament. The Amherstburg Firefighters Association held the roughly 240-player event at The Fort Fun Centre last Saturday. Rick Reid is the president of the association’s volleyball tournament. He’s also a captain at station three. “It’s incredible to see all these teams come out to play,” he said. “We’ve also

Mark Rudkin, joined by his fiveyear-old son Alexander, said they favour wider walkways at the park and a connecting link to South Riverview Dr. He said the only way to access the park from that side currently is through the St. Joseph Church parking lot. With the town having several diagrams on what sorts of play equipment and recreation areas could be put in, Rudkin said many looked good to them. “I think we like what they are proposing,” said Rudkin. “In addition to what we’re seeing, we’d like to see wider pathways and barrier-free access to the equipment.” Rudkin added he and Alexander go to the park two to three times per week and that it is important to their family. Roberts estimated that “a couple of dozen” people came by and that most feedback was positive. “The community would like to see

upgrades in that park,” he said. Playground equipment is currently scattered throughout the park, Roberts noted, and said that will be centralized into one location under the plan. Another area of the park will be devoted to “unstructured play” where children could kick a ball around, play games and do other physical activity. A third area of the park, which is not covered under the $170,000, would be for “discovery play” with one such example being a dinosaur model on the ground with children able to find “fossils.” The latter stage would still have to find money before it could be undertaken with Roberts indicating the Amherstburg Community Foundation, Rotary Club and accessibility committee could be sources of funding. The rain has delayed timelines, but Roberts is hoping to have new playground equipment installed at Beaudoin Park by the end of the summer. “The season has really put the play equipment behind schedule,” he said.

got a bunch of great people donating their time and their resources.” The Fort Fun Centre donated the venue for the event. The teams kicked up sand in the venue’s outdoor courts and slid along the grass in the field to the venue’s south. The event began 30 years ago, but J. “Wimpy” Tiefenbach has only been its namesake for 20. His daughter, Jaclyn Tiefenbach, remembers the year the dedication occurred. “When I was a kid, my dad and I used to come to the tournaments and set up the volleyball nets every year,” she said. “He passed away 10 years into the tournament and that’s when they named it after him. He was so involved with the fire department and the tournament itself that I think they decided to pay respect to him as a man.”

Amherstburg firefighters donated their time serving food, The Fort Fun Centre donated its facilities and Shooters Roadhouse donated prizes. The money raised at the event will go to various Amherstburg-based charities, Reid said. “It’s overwhelming at times,” Tiefenbach said. “I think this is a great way to carry on his legacy. He was so dedicated to charity in this community that I think it’s a great honour to be given the opportunity to carry on in his footsteps.” Reid said that if charity is the legacy “Wimpy” left, it’s one that’s being well-respected. “We’re exceptionally grateful for the generosity we’ve seen here today. These are some really fantastic organizations,” he said.
