Alysia and her daughter Everleigh Therrien from Windsor came out in costume
The Amherstburg Uncommon Festival returned with steampunk and Harry Potter enthusiasts hitting the streets to enjoy the activities. Those who didn’t dress in steampunk or Harry Potter attire still got to enjoy jugglers, buskers, games, music, magicians, arialiests and circus performers, with Dr. Von Houligan performing under the “Big Top” in Toddy Jones
“It’s just fun. We love Amherstburg,” said Petruniak. “Everyone comes here to haveStephaniefun.”
Quinn McCarthy and Stephanie McEachern of Essex and Renee Rocheleau of Leamington came together, with McCarthy stating he loves “anything and everything” steampunk. He said he has been hearing about the Amherstburg Uncommon Festival for several years and wanted to make sure he came this year.
The Therriens were dressed in Harry Potter attire and Alysia said they enjoy doing so because of the opportunity to be mysterious and magical. She said they will “definitely” be back next year.
Things looked a bit “uncommon” on the downtown streets of Amherstburg over the weekend.

Welsh said he loves living in Mc Gregor but questions how much atten tion residents in that community get from the town.
A major concern voiced by Welsh was flooding, as he pointed out his base ment has flooded three times in the last five years with some of those seeing over a foot of water in his basement.
“The only time you come to the coun try is when you want tax base,” he said.

Councillor Peter Courtney also voiced concern with the town’s ability to handle new homes and wanted to know if there was information available showing how many land severances in the area could possibly tie into the Mc GregorResidentsystem.James Lenson asked about homes and their sizes, noting there could be smaller lawns, more pavement and less area for water to dissipate. Sue Silver, another McGregor homeowner, added she had several concerns includ ingSilverflooding.alsobelieved traffic could be an issue, noting she moved there because of the community feel and didn’t want
Plans for a subdivision expansion in McGregor has drawn concerns from residents in the area. Many concerns voiced to town council relate to flooding and traffic. Screenshot

said. “I’m objecting to all parts of (the proposed subdivision). I’m fed up with all of it. My taxes come here but what do I get for it?”
Spencer added: “We have to design for much less release in the stormwa ter that is entering the abutting drains. Even those are getting less flow from the subdivision that it is now, no ques tion.”Councillor Michael Prue added “it ap pears almost everything has been done” but requested the recommendation in clude that county planner Rebecca Be langer be asked to undertake any addi tional stormwater management studies she may feel are necessary.
Police say that on September 13 around 1 a.m., an of ficer with Windsor Police Service – Amherstburg de tachment was monitoring speed of traffic by conducting radar in the area of County Road 20 and Shaw Drive. Ac cording to police, at this time, the officer observed a blue Dodge journey travelling east on County Road 20 at what appeared to be above the posted speed limit in an 80 km/hr zone. The officer activated the radar and the vehicle was found to allegedly be travelling in excess of 20 km/hr above the posted speed limit.
Residents object to subdivision expansion, cite infrastructure concerns
The Windsor Police Service – Amherstburg Detach ment have laid a pair of charges against an 18-year-old Amherstburg resident after a traffic stop last week.

The development, which would be built to the west of the first phase and located just south of Middle Side Road (County Road 10) in McGregor, drew concerns and ire of some of those who attended the Sept. 12 meeting at town
Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche, who also lives in McGregor, noted the ground is hard in that area of the county and water has few places to go. He also said there have been incidents of “cloudbursts” over the years that brought heavy rain to the area, adding he recalls seeing people with canoes rowing down roads in Lucier Estates.
Town administration said the infra structure is “sound” in that area but Welsh added “I promise you we will flood again and it isn’t going to be good. You have no idea how frustrated I am.”

“I’mhall.against all of this,” McGregor resident Tom Welsh told town council.

added Belanger is “quite fa miliar with this area” as she is a former planner with the Town of Amherstburg.

Rick Spencer from the engineering firm RC Spencer and Associates said they have already done a traffic study that “clearly states there would be an in significant impact” on County Road 10 and nearby intersections. A storm water management plan was also completed and approved by the Essex Region Con servation Authority (ERCA) and the Ministry of the Environment, Conserva tion and Parks (MECP).
Welsh added “we pay a lot of taxes in this town” and questioned what would happen if another 69 homes were built nearby. He said he is not opposed to de velopment, but the infrastructure has to support
Police say the vehicle was stopped and as a result of the investigation, an 18-year-old Amherstburg resident was charged with speeding, and driving while under suspension. The vehicle was towed as it was subject to a seven-day impound, police add.

to lose that.
Spencer said the stormwater plan for Phase 1 was not designed to the up graded standards that were put in place in 2018. The newer design standards are more stringent as are ERCA’s require ments for the naturalized stormwater management pond, Spencer indicated. He believed flooding in the area was not directly connected to the existing pond or the town’s sewage system in that area, but to “an interconnection of sanitary and storm sewers on the pri vateCourtneyside.” asked if upgraded storm water designs for Phase 2 could allevi ate issues that have occurred in Phase 1.

“The best we could do is take the data we had and move forward,” he said.
“I’ve had human feces in my down stairs,” he told council.
“I don’t want tell her how to do her job and that seems almost like we’re telling her how to do her job,” respond ed Meloche. “She’s going to go through her professional process. One way or another, she’s going to do what she has to Melochedo.”
“It is designed for the stormwater that is coming off Phase 1,” said Spencer. “It will improve the outlet condition, there is more storage. We have to design for the much higher criteria.”
“At the end of the day, we can’t tell the engineer how to do her job,” saidTheMeloche.matter was forwarded to the County of Essex, with the county also being informed of flooding that has oc curred in the area over the last five years to ensure the town has done its due dili gence to ensure support has been pro vided to residents.

“That's a feel-good win for our team,” he said, though acknowledging Mooretown played the night before and beat Wallaceburg 12-2.
The Admirals scored twice late in the first period with Max Jones scoring the first one and Candido getting his first of three goals less than two minutes later. The Admirals carried that 2-0 lead until midway through the second period when Mooretown's Tristen Konrad and Jace Dupuis scored 58 seconds apart to tie the score. However, Candido would score two more goals in a 21-second span late in the second period to put the Admirals up 4-2 after 40 minutes. Allan Djordjevic's goal in the third period rounded out the scoring Sunday night.
Amherstburg now has a three-game road trip starting Friday night in Lakeshore. They play this Sunday (Sept. 25) in Blenheim before going to Essex Sept. 27. Their next home game is Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. versus Wallaceburg.

Also credited were general manager Greg Crain and assistant general manager Craig Russett for their work in shaping this year's roster.
“It took us the first ten minutes of the game to get our legs going,” said Admirals head coach Paul Bortignon. “After that, I thought our forwards, defence and goalie played well.”
Amherstburg’s Colton Candido (10) scores a first period goal on Mooretown’s John Chartrand during Sunday night’s 5-2 Admirals’ victory. Candido would finish with three goals on the night.
Candido added he came into the game putting the team first and wanting to do what he could to make them successful. He said he is in his final year of Jr. C hockey so he wants to do what he can to make the Admirals successful.
The Admirals opened the regular season with a 5-2 win over the visiting Mooretown Flags Sunday night backed by a hat trick from Colton Candido. After a pre-season where many veteran players didn't play to allow young players to try and make the team, the veterans returned Sunday night and showed what they can do.
Bortignon said the players were excited to beat Mooretown, as they had lost nine straight games to the Flags heading into Sunday night's game.

Bortignon said they had a bit of a letdown in the second period but picked it up shortly thereafter. Pettypiece said if the players don’t learn the game correctly, that can impact their playing time and enjoyment as they get older. Many start walking away from the game in their teen years. He said sports are important as they learn life lessons along the way.
