PEELING BACK THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT Have you ever opened up something and found something inside that you didn’t expect to see? Maybe it was a giant gift box with a really tiny gift inside. Or perhaps it was a brightly colored piñata filled with celery sticks. That would definitely be unexpected! It can be hard to know what’s on the inside without looking. The same is true with our lives. What’s really on the inside? When we peel back the layers and take a look at what’s inside of our heart, what do we see? Is it good or is it rotten? Are we sweet and kind or are we rude and sour? With the help of the Holy Spirit, our lives can be filled with good things like peace and joy. But how do we do that? Don’t miss a week of our amazing adventure through ECHO FALLS as we peel back the Fruit of the Spirit and see how amazing it is to live like Jesus!

GO VERSE THIS SCRIPTURE IS OUR THEME VERSE AS WE VENTURE THROUGH ECHO FALLS! “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and selfcontrol. There is no law against these things.” Galatians 5:22-23, NLT

WEEK ONE:

PARABLE OF THE LOST SON GO ANSWER Love is an action, not just a feeling

FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT HIGHLIGHT:

LOVE

The Bible is full of stories talking about God’s love. Perhaps no other story exemplifies the love of God better than the story of the prodigal son in Luke 15:11-32. Take note how the father responds to his lost son as you read this passage of Scripture. See if you can answer the following questions: From the story the prodigal son, what did the father do when the son came back home?

ANSWER: He ran to him and embraced him. He welcomed him back and celebrated his return. He showed him love, forgiveness, mercy, and grace.

How does this story help us understand God’s love?

ANSWER: Listen and give your insight. Example: it makes God sad when we turn away from Him, but He always rejoices and welcomes us back when we come to Him and show we are truly sorry. His love is unconditional and everlasting.

CONCERT AT MIDNIGHT GO ANSWER Joy is a choice I make

FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT HIGHLIGHT:

JOY

Acts 16:16-40 gives the account of Paul and Silas in prison. While many would see a hopeless situation, Paul and Silas choose joy no matter their circumstance. You’ll have to read the story to find out what happens next! Paul and Silas were seemingly thrown into prison for doing something that was good—freeing a woman from being enslaved. Do you think it was fair that they were thrown into prison? Why or why not?

What is the difference between happiness and joy?

ANSWER: Happiness comes and goes based on things that happen around us. Joy is a gift from God that nothing in this world can take away from you. He gives you a choice to find your joy in Him by: trusting, being thankful, praising, and serving Him, etc.

How does this story inspire you to choose joy?

PICKING LOTS GO ANSWER Peace comes from trusting God

FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT HIGHLIGHT:

PEACE

Peace can be hard to come by these day, especially if we’re not always in control. Genesis 13-14 is the story of Abraham and how his trust in God gave him complete peace in any situation he found himself. How does the story of Abraham inspire you to trust God?

What are some ways you can find peace with God?

ANSWER: Praying and listening to God, reading your Bible, praising and worshipping, spending time in His presence, and making right choices.

What are some situations that you’ve gone through that you’ve had to completely trust God? Did you have peace even though it should’ve been scary? Why or why not?

NEXT IN LINE GO ANSWER Patience is waiting with a good attitude

FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT HIGHLIGHT:

PATIENCE

1 Samuel 16-2 Samuel 2 gives the account of David and his long journey from the time he was anointed king by the prophet Samuel until he finally became king. He went through so many challenges that no one would’ve blamed him for giving up, however he knew the power of patience. Why is it important that we should have a good attitude while being patient?

Who can help us be patient in times we don’t want to be patient? ANSWER: Holy Spirit

David should’ve been king long before he finally became king. What do you think patience taught him?

Answers can vary. Many times patience allows us to grow in character and knowledge. Perhaps David became a more wise king as a result of being patient.

LITTLE DUDE IN A BIG TREE GO ANSWER Kindness and goodness show others God’s character

FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT HIGHLIGHT:

KINDNESS AND GOODNESS

Luke 19:1-10 gives the account of Zacchaeus. Watch how one kind gesture from Jesus leads to a kind gesture from Zacchaeus. Jesus was a busy person, but took the time to acknowledge Zacchaeus who was very unpopular in his town. As a result of Jesus’ good gesture, what did Zacchaeus do?

Kindness breaks down barriers. How can you show kindness to someone at school or in the neighborhood who needs it?

WEEK SIX:

FAITHFUL FRIENDS GO ANSWER Faithfulness is doing what I said I would

FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT HIGHLIGHT:

FAITHFULNESS

Faithfulness is an extremely valuable trait to have, especially among close friendships. Perhaps there was not a more faithful friendship than David and Jonathan as read in 1 Samuel 18, 20 and 2 Samuel 9. Do you think it was hard for Jonathan to be a faithful friend to David when David was winning battles and being promised he could marry the king’s daughter?

Kindness breaks down barriers. How can you show kindness to someone at school or in the neighborhood who needs it? ANSWER: By being obedient, praying, listening to what He tells us, reading our Bible and doing our SOAP, going to church, serving, giving in the offering, etc.

What does faithfulness mean? What does it look like? ANSWER: Faithfulness is being strict in the performance of duty or being reliable, trusted and believed. It looks like reading your Bible every day, praying every day, being obedient to the things God is telling you.

WEEK SEVEN:

THE GREAT WALL GO ANSWER Gentleness and self-control are about my words, attitudes and actions

FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT HIGHLIGHT:

GENTLENESS AND SELF-CONTROL

It’s easy to react negatively when things don’t go the way we want them to. Nehemiah 4 gives the account of some less than ideal conditions and a leader who responded well. Imagine getting half way done through a project and then someone taunts you and threatens to destroy what you created. How would that make you feel? How do you think you would respond?

Why is it important for us to have gentleness or to have a spirit of gentleness? ANSWER: Because there are so many people in the world who don’t know Jesus and when we have a spirit of gentleness in us we can show people who Jesus actually is.

How can we better control our actions—turning a negative response into a positive response?
