River Valley Network’s vision is to train thousands of churches to collectively give $1 billion annually above the tithe. They are passionate about generosity because they believe a generous church should be the only type of church. Join them at River Valley Conference, Accelerators (one day topical sprints), Roundtables (relational meetups) and on Talking Church podcast.
Together we can plant more churches, send more missionaries and increase the Kingdom work God has called the church to do!
Thank you to Assemblies of God World Missions for underwriting the cost of each Generosity Accelerator. Assemblies of God World Missions was formed in 1914 following a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Early AG leaders had an immediate concern for the lost, compelling them to take the gospel into all the world. Their mission is to establish the Church among all peoples everywhere by reaching, planting, training and serving.
There are more than 2,600 AGWM missionaries serving in 153 countries with a new Assemblies of God church planted every 66 minutes. We join together in this mission through the generous giving of our prayers, finances and our sons and daughters. Take your next step with Assemblies of God World Missions as we collectively work to establish His church among all peoples everywhere.
Launched in 1995, River Valley is a multi-site church located in Minneapolis, MN with 11 physical locations across the Twin Cities, locations in Vancouver, Canada and Eswatini, Africa, as well as a growing community online. Their mission is to lead people into an authentic, life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ.
We believe we are to live “Blessed to be a blessing.” At River Valley, we give generously to over 100 Kingdom Builders initiatives. This is our over-and-above giving program, which invests in global missions, local church expansion, and future generations of Christian leaders. Our goal with Kingdom Builders is that the church will be resourced at home and that God’s Kingdom would expand around the world.
We believe we aren’t doing this alone, and that’s why we’re building healthy and generous churches. We are committed to coaching 10,000 churches to double their missions giving, which could lead to an increase of $1 Billion annually for ministry and missions projects.
Rob Ketterling is the founding and lead pastor of River Valley Church. His ministry journey over the last 30 years has equipped him to encourage leaders to take their influence to the next level. He is the author of several books including Change Before You Have To, Fix It!, Front-Row Leadership, Speed of Unity, Keep the Change, and his latest book The Generous Life. Rob currently serves on several organizational boards
including the Executive Presbytery for the Assemblies of God USA, the Lead Team for the Church Multiplication Network (CMN) and the board of Regents for North Central University. Rob loves traveling, golf, and enjoying time with his wife Becca, their two sons Connor and Logan, his daughtersin-law Alexia and Mikayla, and his grandson Beckham, son of Connor and Alexia.
Take your next step with AGWM as we collectively work to establish His church among all peoples everywhere.
I am so excited that you are with us today at this Generosity Accelerator! I believe that God has incredible things in store for you and your church. When I started River Valley Church in 1995 with thirteen people, I would have never dreamed that one day our church would be giving away over $10 million in a calendar year. In fact, you’ll hear stories today about points in my life when I didn’t know if our church would stay open another weekend, but God makes the way!
Since I was called to ministry in the jungles of Brazil I have always had a heart for world missions. When we received our first offering as a church, I gave it all away because it was the only thing I could think to do. Now, it blows my mind that since starting River Valley, we’ve given over $35,000,000.00 to Assemblies of God World Missions. There is nothing I believe in more strongly than planting the church where it has not yet been planted. I couldn’t encourage you enough that every church should radically invest in the unreached.
My prayer is that through today, God will speak to you in a new way. Maybe this idea of above and beyond giving is entirely new to you and the spark of generosity will be ignited today. Or perhaps you have been doing something similar for years and you’re here to take things to the next level in your church. I believe today God is going to give you fresh vision and increased passion in the area of generosity. I am praying that God will accelerate generosity in your church to supernatural levels like he has at River Valley. Together, with generous hearts, we will see more churches planted, more missionaries sent and the message of Jesus spread like never before!
Here we go!
The key to unlocking generosity is honor and obedience, and this begins with tithing. As pastors, it would be wrong for us to tell our congregations to give to Kingdom Builders without first teaching them to tithe.
When we get this foundation right, everything follows. Most often we dial into the analytics of tithe and above and beyond giving, but generosity begins in the heart. When we disciple our congregations to discover the joy in giving, their heart posture changes and they are ready to take that step into becoming a Kingdom Builder.
Here are some practical ways we begin developing generous hearts in our church:
• Teach about tithing on the tithe - 10% of our Our Tithe goes to monthly Missions support.
• Host five-minute missionary highlights before offering
“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.” Malachi 3:10, NIV
In this room, if everyone gave 10% of their tithe to AGWM, how much would we be able to give to missions?
“THE TITHE IS ABOUT OBEDIENCE. KINGDOM BUILDERS ARE ABOUT GENEROSITY.”
WE ORGANIZE AND SHARE ABOUT OUR KINGDOM BUILDER PARTNERS IN THREE CATEGORIES:
LOCAL 10%-30%
GLOBAL
50% - 70%
We are committed to funding the growth of the church locally through expanding our own campuses, planting life-giving, Spirit-filled churches in our communities, and ministering to the hurting in our own backyards. Here are some examples of our local Kingdom Builder partners:
What organizations do you already give to that falls under these three categories? What other projects are you currently giving to, or would like to give to that could be a part of your Kingdom Builders? Write them down.
FUTURE CHRISTIAN LEADERS 10%-15%
Through Kingdom Builders, we support key missions projects across the globe. Some examples of our Global Kingdom Builder partners are:
• Speed The Light
• Boys and Girls Missionary Challenge (BGMC)
Kingdom Builders believes in coming alongside future Christian leaders to foster a love for the Bible, God, and the lost. Our Kingdom Builders partnerships work with organizations that care for the physical and spiritual needs of our future leaders.
*During years with large building projects, the percentage given to local projects will be substantially higher.
It is easy to assume Kingdom Builders are those who are able to give $1M and above, but this is not the reality! Every person in your church has the ability to be a Kingdom Builder.
God does not use superstars to do this. He looks down at the church and says, “Who has something I can use? Who has something to give? Who will step out of the boat and have some faith?” It is not about the money people have, but the sacrifice they are willing to make.
WHAT’S IN YOUR HANDS?
WHAT’S IN GOD’S HANDS?
WHAT’S IN YOUR HEART?
First, what is in your hands? Make a plan to give. When you have plans that are diligent, it leads to plenty (Proverbs 21:5). Whatever the amount is - have the plan in place, work the plan, and be obedient with it. Start there.
Next, what is in God’s hands? Ask God to give you a vision for what He could do through you with His help. This is beyond what you can do in your natural income. This requires you to take a step of faith. Additionally, Habakkuk 2:2 tells us to write that vision down and pray about it! God will supply all your needs according to His riches in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19). Stepping out in faith pleases God.
Lastly, what is in your heart? What would be a dream amount you could give? Hold onto it. This number is only between you and God. Watch as each step of faith you take, God moves you closer to that dream. God can do exceedingly, abundantly more than all we can ask for or imagine. (Ephesians 3:20)
Giving is like a muscle. The more you work it out, the stronger it gets. The Lord proved this years ago when Pastor Rob felt prompted to take up a mission offering for the missionaries every week leading into Christmas. In years past, he would hold off on offerings until special events like guest speakers or Christmas Eve. However, what he realized was by holding off on offerings, it meant that once or twice a year you ask your congregation to hit their maximum weight, and the response is limited... In contrast, when the church gave weekly leading into Christmas, giving was actually strengthened and increased continuously until the final gift! After this experience, to strengthen the giving muscle, River Valley has found this monthly rhythm to help cultivate a generous church and increase generosity.
Each month River Valley talks about giving every week and found the cadence of Ask, Update, Celebrate, Break, to work well with our congregation.
ASK:
The first week of the month, we choose our monthly project or partner that we will highlight during our weekend services. We will show a video, have slides ready to show, and announce it from the stage. Once this is highlighted we will ask for a contribution.
The second week of the month, we update the church on how much we raised for the partner or project that we highlighted the past week. We will ask a second time for people to give if they have not had the opportunity yet to contribute.
CELEBRATE:
The third week we celebrate what we raised! No matter if we went above the goal, hit the goal, or were below the goal, we celebrate generosity.
BREAK:
The fourth week of the month we will still take offerings, but we will not highlight a specific project or partner.

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER
Prepare New Kingdom Builder Booklet
While we have been tithing and giving to Kingdom Builders throughout the year, we focus in during the fourth quarter of the year to continue pressing toward our annual goal. Starting at the end of October through year-end, there are four key phases that create the year-end wave of generosity.
Our Kingdom Builders Banquet is a special event typically held toward the end of October. We invite several hundred guests to a semi-formal banquet with the purpose of communicating the heart of Kingdom Builders. The flow of the evening begins with dinner and then we open with worship. We always bring in a special missionary guest who shares their story.
It is important to invite boots on the ground front-line missionaries, not organizational leaders. The missionaries provide powerful testimonies and are a physical representation of what a global heart looks like. The Kingdom Builders Banquet starts the wave of generosity leading up to our Miracle Offering weekend.
This weekend is huge! It takes place the second week of November and 40-50% of what we bring in the entire year will come from the Miracle Offering weekend. We will start talking about the Miracle Offering two weeks in advance, asking people to prepare their hearts and to be asking God what He is encouraging them to give.
Pastor Rob preaches a specific message about generosity and expanding the Kingdom of God. We also remind people that all of the money that comes in goes out to Kingdom Builder partners. Then the window is open for two weeks for people to give their gift, reminding the congregation each week that they can participate in the Miracle Offering.
Three weekends after the miracle offering, Pastor Rob will reveal the total number that was given for Miracle Offering. We make sure this is a celebratory moment!
Following the Miracle Offering reveal, we have our final push to reach our goal before the end of the year.
We send several emails to the church, continue to talk about it from the stage during weekend services and we heavily emphasize stock gifts as year end is when most of those gifts are given.
The banquet takes place two weeks before your Miracle Offering Weekend.
The banquet can be held at your church, in your home or at an event space. This will depend on how large your church is and the expected number of attendees.
Who do we invite to the Kingdom Builder Banquet?
We start our invitations with our Significant Kingdom Builder Givers, Top Tithe of the previous year, and Top Kingdom Builder Givers year to date to given them an opportunity to sign up first. Then later, if there is still room, we will open it to our whole church.
Semi-formal
• Welcome (5 Min)
• Dinner (30-40 mins)
• Worship (2 songs)
• Vision from Lead Pastor (10 min)
• Missionary Guest Speaker (40 min)
• Response time to give (10 mins)
• End
All of our invitations to the Kingdom Builders Banquet come through email. We begin with a save the date five months in advance. Then, beginning three months in advance we will send email invitations with all the details.
This is an example of what our table settings look like at our Kingdom Builders Banquet. We love to make this even special and elegant.
Miracle Offering happens once a year in November where you invite your congregation to give the best gift they have ever given to Kingdom Builders. This is above and beyond the tithe to help reach the Kingdom Builder goal for the year. All of the money given to Kingdom Builders is given away to project partners!
On Miracle Offering weekend, Pastor Rob preaches a specific message about generosity and expanding the Kingdom of God. He invites the congregation to give the best gift they have ever given!
Miracle Offering takes place in church during weekend services. Everyone in the congregation is invited to participate!
This is the one time per year that people bring their gift forward and put their envelope in the bucket. Ushers hold the bucket while pastors shake hands and thank people as they walk by.
does
Miracle offering takes place two weeks following the Kingdom Builder Banquet and two weeks before Thanksgiving.
Each year, 50-70% of our total Kingdom Builders giving comes in during the 4th quarter.

“Then
Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the
age.’”
MATTHEW 28:18-20, NIV
When missionaries visit your church, have your congregation stand and clap to welcome them to the stage. Demonstrate your heart and honor towards them in that manner. We stand to honor them not because they live in another country or are a hero, but because of their radical obedience, which is something we all should have. Be sure to invite these missionaries to share in both the main auditorium and kids service!
Another encouragement is to host virtual global teams and global teams! Open the door for your congregation to develop a global heart through experience and it will unlock the generosity in their hearts. Encourage your church members to go one as soon as possible. For your staff, provide time off for them to go on one global mission trip per year.
Finally, host “Xplore” small groups as a Core Group in your small group ministry.
We are entering the part of our service where we encourage our church in its giving.
We are a tithing church, which means we believe and practice the biblical example of tithing, giving the first 10% or our increase to the work of the local church.
We are also a Kingdom Builders church, which means above and beyond the tithe, we believe God has invited us to generously support the work of God globally, locally, and into the future Christian leaders and through strategic partnerships and initiatives
Share a Bible verse. Verses allow the Word of God to encourage and challenge people to give and be generous.
Share a story. Stories inspire people to give and be generous! These stories can be of congregation members who have had their lives impacted by giving or by organizations who have been blessed by our giving.
Initiatives: Share about the specific project you are giving to. Allow the specificity of a strategic initiative, project, or goal to motivate people to be generous.
I’d like to invite the ushers to come forward.
You can give a number of ways today, as the buckets pass by or online or by text message
More than anything, your generosity is changing lives, and we want to convey our gratitude in your trust and faithfulness in our church to steward your giving well for the glory of God! Let’s pray.
Thank you for reaching out to River Valley Church Kingdom Builders. We review requests from many different organizations and ministries and it’s our pleasure to do so. We use this profile to gather information about specific projects that might align to River Valley’s giving goals.
Please take a few minutes to answer the following questions. We appreciate thorough responses so that we are able to learn as much as we can about your ministry and request.
