Seventeen New Firefighters Take the Oath of Office in Bayonne

At a recent ceremony in the Bayonne Council Chambers, seventeen new firefighters took their oath of office. They have joined the Bayonne Fire Department after passing a competitive civil service test and fire academy training. The new firefighters are Sean Brow, Vincent Crawford, Moataz Elnaggar, Patrick Jarczewski, Matthew Blanchard, Evan Smith, Brandon Russo, Jeremy Ives, Jacob Lucarelli, James Marnell, James Tyminski, Jan Skora, James Ryan, David Folger, Nicholas Pivano, Jayro Navedo Mercedes, and Conor Farley. City Clerk Madelene Medina administered the oath of office to the new

firefighters before a large crowd in the Council Chambers.

Addressing the new firefighters, Mayor Jimmy Davis urged them to “learn every single day.”

He assured them that they have joined “the best” fire department. Saying “you represent the City of Bayonne,” Mayor Davis reminded the new recruits to “respect the uniform.” He promised to provide them with all of the technology and equipment that they will need.

Public Safety Director Robert Kubert congratulated the new firefighters and their families. He reminded the new group that the public would be depending on them. Director Kubert explained that the new recruits were needed to help replenish the ranks of the Fire Department following the retirement of

He told the new firefighters that they have “the best job in the world,” and promised them that “there are many achievements that lie ahead.” Chief Weaver said that they have joined “over 118 years of tradition” in the Bayonne Fire Department, and that they have “a chance to make a difference in our community.”

City Council Member At-Large Loyad Booker recognized that the new recruits “have gone through a tough time” to become firefighters. He said, “The journey begins today.” Council Member Booker urged the firefighters to “look out for each other.”

Jersey City Strengthens Public Safety: Over 740 Officers

Hired Under Mayor Fulop, 5

More Join the Ranks

Mayor Steven M. Fulop joined City Council members and Public Safety officials at this week’s graduation of five police recruits being sworn in as the newest members of the Jersey City Police Department during a ceremony inside City Hall Council Chambers.

The new police officers are joining the police department one week after Mayor Fulop and Public Safety Director James Shea announced record-breaking prog

ress in combatting crime, with Jersey City achieving the lowest homicide rate in its history.

“We are proud to welcome these five dedicated recruits into our police department during a particularly challenging time for law enforcement agencies across the country,” said Mayor Fulop. “Their presence will further enhance public safety and strengthen relationships within our diverse neighborhoods.”

The small but significant graduating class reflects the nationwide challenges in recruiting and retaining qualified law enforcement personnel, a priority that the city continues to address proactively.

As a result of the Fulop Administration’s diversity recruitment efforts, nearly 75% of the over 740 police officers hired since 2013 are minorities, making the JCPD one of the most diverse police departments in the region. In fact, four of the five new graduates represent minority populations, reflecting Jersey City’s diverse community.

“This is a very hard job to get, and it should be, because it is an important job. These new officers are joining the best police department in New Jersey, if not the country,” added Public Safety Director James Shea. “We will make sure they have what they need to succeed and have the tools they need to have successful careers.”

Hudson County Community College to Welcome Malcolm X’s Daughter, Dr. Ilyasah Shabazz

Malcolm X fought racial injustice by any means necessary, advocating armed resistance and separatism; Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. espoused peaceful protests and community organizing to end segregation and fight discrimination. Although the Muslim revolutionary leader and the Baptist minister differed in their advocacy and philosophical approaches, their legacies are intertwined. Before they were both assassinated at age 39, they built the foundation for future generations of activists.

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and in

celebration of Black History Month, Hudson County Community College (HCCC) will welcome Malcolm X’s daughter,

Dr. Ilyasah Shabazz at the College’s 2025 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial. The event will be held beginning at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at the HCCC Culinary Conference Center, 161 Newkirk Street in Jersey City, NJ. Following Dr. Shabazz’s speech, attendees will enjoy lunch and the Opening Reception of the Civil Rights Art Exhibition in the Benjamin J. Dineen and Dennis C. Hull Gallery in the Gabert Library. Guests may RSVP at https://form.jotform. com/242805965321155.

Dr. Shabazz is an author, public speaker, and activist who promotes interfaith dialogue to build bridges between cultures for the world’s young leaders. She was the inaugural Diversity,

Equity and Inclusion

Fellow at Worchester State University for the 2023-2024 academic year, and assisted with diversity and inclusion initiatives throughout the campus. Dr. Shabazz is an adjunct professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, where she has taught a variety of courses including American Cultural Pluralism and the Law. HCCC President Dr. Christopher Reber stated, “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X sacrificed their lives in the fight for equality. They shared a common goal: improving Black lives and all lives. We are honored to welcome Dr. Shabazz as our guest speaker.”

Although Dr. King and Malcolm X met and were photographed together only once

during a Senate debate on the Civil Rights Act in 1964, their widows bonded. Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” and Malcolm X’s “The Ballot or the Bullet” speeches helped define their visions for civil and human rights. Their parallel paths are detailed in The Sword and The Shield dual biography.

More information on the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial event may be obtained by contacting the HCCC Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at 201-360-5399 or dei@ hccc.edu.

Art House Productions and Puppet Heap are thrilled to announce a collaboration in the Art House Gallery. From January 20 through January 29, 2025, Puppet Heap will present a popup exhibit at 345 Marin Boulevard, Jersey City, NJ, featuring The Heap and other Puppet Heap characters.

real-time. It’s an honor to be part of this incredible arts hub, and we can’t wait to see the reactions to our puppetry and storytelling!”

“Art House Productions is very excited to collaborate with Puppet Heap on this pop-up gallery. Puppet Heap is a blend of visual and performing arts, with their beautifully crafted puppets and captivating stories told through various characters. We can’t wait to introduce Puppet Heap to the Jersey City community,” says Sunjay Venkatraman, Art House Productions Marketing Director.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with Art House Productions to bring our puppets to Jersey City,” says Cindy Campos Alves, Business Development & Marketing Director. “The community here has such a rich arts culture, and we’re excited to share The Heap and other characters with them. This exhibit celebrates the creative process behind our work, and while The Heap will be in hibernation during the exhibit, he will come alive in March for both the screening of our short films and a live Heap performance on March 27. These events, part of our ongoing collaboration with Art House, will provide a fantastic opportunity to connect with the audience in

This pop-up exhibit will be on display in the Art House Gallery and visible to the public from Marin Boulevard. Featured in this exhibit is The Heap, the brainchild of Hoboken artist Paul Andrejco, that was 30 years in the making. As described in an NJ.com article, The Heap is an eccentric old man who is the guide and storyteller for the puppets of the mythical town of Spudbottom. In a feature with TapInto, Andrejco has said “The Heap is a reflection of the fact that we all carry a lot of stuff with us and as we get older it just keeps building.”

Following this exhibit will be a spring pro gram in the Art House Productions theater in March of 2025, featuring a performance by The Heap, short films created by Puppet Heap, and a talk-back with artist Paul Andrejco.
