BUS LANE Anchor Tours secures Scania!

Dundalk based Anchor Tours recently took delivery of a new Scania Irizar PB 6x2*4. The 13.9 metre tri-axle coach has a 59+1+1 seat layout and is powered by Scania’s 340 hp engine mated to a 6-speed ZF autobox and Integral Retarder. It was purchased from Westward Scania.

Envy Dublin Mini Coaches UNVI! Dublin Mini Coaches has purchased a new UNVI GT Mercedes-Benz Vario 816 from MUTEC, Dublin. As well as 29 Grand Rally seats with special trim, matching Dublin Mini Coaches' corporative colours, the midi-coach is adapted to standing passengers following the new EC Directive 2001/85. It has two destination displays, air conditioning, and a radio/PA/CD system coupled to a DVD player displaying through a LCD monitor.

According to Dublin Mini Coaches’ MD Stephen Millar, the new vehicle is “Probably the nicest bus we have ever bought, so well done to UNVI and their team.”

BRT to shuttle into Dublin?

B

us Rapid Transit (BRT), popular in parts of the UK, Brazil and Turkey is set to arrive in Dublin in the not too distant future.

Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council along with a number of other interested parties has put forward a viable proposal to establish the South East Dublin Rapid Transit Service.

Called ‘BlueLine’, it is envisaged that the project is included in the transport strategy for the Greater Dublin area currently being drawn up by the National Transport Authority.

BlueLine will run from St. Vincent’s University Hospital (Nutley Lane) to the Sandyford Business Estate via University College, Dublin. According to Owen Keegan, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Manager, “it will offer a high quality, high-frequency, high-capacity public transport service featuring all the benefits of a fi xed-rail tram system with the flexibility of being able to drive on the road. It will ensure safe, quick and dependable journey times, therefore improving connectivity and reducing dependence on private car travel in South East Dublin.”

The proposed new service will provide a high quality public transport link between the DART, Bus and LUAS services.

Ten stations will be provided along the set route with one service every six minutes at peak times. Operating 18 hours a day it is estimated that the new system will carry in excess of 1,000 passengers per direction per hour. Although an actual vehicle supplier has not been named, the ftr designed and m a nu f ac t u re d by WrightBus in Ballymena is successfully operated

in York (UK) and Las Vegas in the USA. Similar to the LUAS, passengers will have easy access from multiple doors and real-time information displays, off-board tickets and shelters.

“BlueLine is a very exciting development in public transport in Dublin. It can deliver a quality service, which is very close to that of light rail in terms of journey time, operating hours, frequency, reliability and comfort but at a significantly lower cost. A detailed assessment of the project shows that it can be built for around €33m and that it offers excellent ‘value for money’. Th is makes it a very appropriate public investment in the current difficult economic climate,” added Owen Keegan.

The promoters of this project which includes Dún Laoghaire and Dundrum County Councils, Beacon South Quarter, UCD, St. Vincent’s Hospital, RTE and the Merrion Centre have set up Public Information Centres at their premises where members of the public can view the project and submit comments. A website has also been developed – www.blueline.ie.

Generation II – Plaxton Panther unleashed!

Foxhound finds comfort in Van Hool Alizee Foxhound Travel Ltd. (Monaghan) has chosen the pedigree Van Hool Alizee built on a Scania chassis for its coach tour service. It has a 49+1+1 reclining seat layout that can also be converted to 53 seats when required. It is powered by Scania’s 340 hp engine with a ZF 6-speed automated transmission and integral retarder.

porting a new ‘feline’ look the latest generation of the Panther range of 12.8m and 15m coaches also features improvements in technology and materials.

Based on a choice of Volvo bus chassis, the new Panther offers not only savings in weight over the previous generation, the 12.8 metre for example is up to 5% lighter, but modifications made to the drivetrain deliver significant benefits in fuel consumption, maintenance costs and downtime. The range will be launched with a 12.8m based on the Volvo B9R and the 15 metre built on the new Volvo B13RT. Significantly, the new Panther has been designed to comply with both domestic COIF standards as well as Whole Vehicle Type Approval (WVTA). Kevin Wood, Sales Director explains, “We are conscious that the introduction

of W VTA will mean some compromise for operators in terms of seating layout and overall capacity. We have seen something of an upturn in interest in many of the types which will disappear next year, 57 and 70 seats in 12m vehicles for instance, so it made sense to cater for those customers who will take the opportunity to buy many of these variants for the last time.”

12-Day-Rule Regulation Amended

C

hanges to the European Communities Regulations dealing with tachographs and driver’s hours includes a new SI – Statutory Instrument that amends the regulation for drivers involved in International Coach tours. No changes are being made to the actual driving time, breaks and rest rules other than making provision for derogation to give effect to the ’12-Day-Rule’ for occasional International coach services.

According to the Road Safety Authority (RSA), “the provision allows a driver engaged in a single occasional service of International carriage (coach tour) to postpone the weekly rest period for up to 12 consecutive 24 hour periods following a previous regular weekly rest period to certain provisions.” The new Statutory Instrument Regulation that includes 1073/2009 (Article 29) will enable the RSA and the Gardai to enforce this provision.

Irish customers of Volvo Buses & Coaches will be familiar with this sales and service centre for the Swedish brand down through the years. Now to service a broader customer base and growing product range, a new purpose-built Bus & Coach Sales Centre in Coventry has opened.

New evaluation system for reducing HGV/PSV emissions

W

ith a view to providing operators with a tool that determines the most efficient vehicle for their specific transport needs, various European bus and truck manufacturers have carried out an initiative that enables them to offer a harmonised emissions evaluation system. In this respect, they have developed a calculation system that uses computer simulations based on real tests with buses and trucks of different categories.

Another of the objectives pursued by this group of manufacturers, in association with ACEA, is to provide legislators at the European Union with a more precise overview of the situation regarding passenger and freight transport under the heading of emissions, especially in relation to future restrictive policies that are planned by the European Union in this respect.

Th is monitoring tool aims to provide a more precise reflection of emissions levels depending on the function and purpose of the vehicle in question, taking into account factors such as its size, its shape, the function it performs, the load it carries, its speed and the distances covered, not to mention the number of stops it is required to make. The emissions tables will, therefore, be calculated in terms of grams of CO2 per tonne and per kilometre (cubic metres and kilometres in the case of freight) and in terms of passengers per kilometre, based on parameters such as the combination of engine and gearbox performance, aerodynamics and tyre specifications.

Optare Eco Drive Dashboard – a big hit!

O

ptare’s Eco Drive Dashboard has won the Passenger Transport Categor y in the annual Chartered Institute of Transport & Logistics Awards.

Speaking to the audience at the Gala Dinner in London, Optare’s Commercial Director Glenn Saint said, “Th is is a strong endorsement with the judges clearly recognising the benefits of a system that enables continuous driver behaviour monitoring to take place and the information to be used to improve safety and deliver better fuel efficiency. Congratulations must also go to the team at Actia, our strategic partner in the project.”

Developed in just over 12 months and now a standard feature on all new Optare buses, the Eco Drive Dashboard aims to improve driving standards by displaying key information to drivers in a simple and easy-to-follow format. A coloured bar chart, which uses a green/ amber/red colour coding system, shows at a glance when instances of harsh braking or acceleration occur.

When the Optare Eco Drive Dashboard was first trialled, the results showed fuel savings of between 10% and 15% and these figures are now being confi rmed as increasing numbers of buses fitted with the system enter service.

VDL Citea – Bus of the Year 2011

F

ollowing its participation in the Bus Euro Test 2010 held in the Romanian capital Bucharest, the Citea SLF-120 Low Floor City Bus from VDL Bus & Coach emerged as winner of the much-coveted title ‘Bus of the Year 2011’.

On accepting the Award at the IAA Commercial Vehicles Show Gala Banquet in Hanover, Rémi Henkemans, Managing Director of VDL Bus & Coach, is proud of the product and his team, "Being awarded the ‘Bus of the Year 2011’ title shows that we and our products are among the European elite.

The jury of ‘Bus of the Year 2011’ consisting of trade journalists from 19 European countries including Ireland’s Sean Murtagh, Fleet Bus & Coach, all agreed that the Citea was above all a well- balanced, harmonious bus for city transport that performs admirably on all aspects. “The bus provides the passengers with every comfort, and the driving characteristics are of high quality,” stated Sean.

The VDL Citea, which can accommodate up to 100 passengers, is an innovative low-floor city bus. Its lightweight construction offers excellent carrying capacity, saves on fuel and reduces emissions. The repair and maintenance-friendly construction of this low-floor bus reduces workshop times.

Impressive International sales figures confirm the advanced design of the Citea city bus, as VDL Bus & Coach has secured a large number of orders for this newcomer. These include the RTA (Road and Transport Authority) in Dubai placing an order for no fewer than 518 Citea city buses. This order, worth millions, is the largest single order in the history of VDL Group. The order from the Belgian Company of TEC (Transport en Commun) for 217 Citeas, dating from March of this year, is currently

causing a high degree of capacity utilisation in the production plants. TEC opted for the Citea CLF, which is 12 metres long and has an EEV engine.

These low-floor buses will be deployed in four cities and regions.

ZF contributes to VDL’s Citea success World leading component supplier ZF played its part in the VDL Citea CLF 120 winning the coveted Bus of the Year 2011. The award winning low-floor bus uses the ZF Ecomat 6-speed automatic transmission and is also equipped with ZF axles featuring independent suspension.

Evaluation criteria for the Euro Bus Test in Bucharest, the Romanian capital included the vehicle’s suitability for daily use and their cost-effectiveness. “Here, ZF components and systems make a valuable contribution to the positive rating achieved by the VDL Citea,” said a ZF press spokesman. “It was in particular the cost-effective ZF Ecomat 6-speed automatic transmission which successfully played off its advantages in demanding inner-City traffic. ZF’s low-floor axles increase passenger comfort; after all, they allow for barrier-free passage through the passenger compartment and more travel comfort,” he concluded.

63rd Commercial Vehicles Show

A

lmost 2,000 exhibitors from 40 different countries displayed their products and services at the 63rd Commercial Vehicles Show (IAA) in Hanover at the end of September. While no-one would dare say the industry is fully back on its feet, there was a feeling of optimism around the Exhibition, and while most agreed that the crisis is over it will be a slow return to stability. Organised by the

German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) it was estimated that well over a quarter of a million people would visit the Show. Fleet’s Jarlath Sweeney, Sean Murtagh and Ron Van Dieten were there to see fi rst hand how our industry is pulling itself out of recession and facing the challenge of preserving our planet.

Popular with Irish and UK operators the Probus 850 continues to be a favourite. Available now with a Cummins Euro 5 ISB6 engine and ZF 65 1010 manual gearbox BMC continues to upgrade this 35-seater luxury coach. An automatic transmission option is also available in the latest model. Thanks to some clever engineering under-floor luggage space has been increased to 45m3.

An increased focus on fuel economy has been the driving force behind a new range of turbochargers launched by Cummins at the IAA in Hanover.

Having assembled an International team of engineers based in the UK, China and India it has produced a new type turbo which features a unique sliding wall which allows the turbo to increase the chamber temperature which makes the particulate regenerator more efficient.

Using the slogan ‘Trucks for the World’ Daimler Bus claims that no other manufacturer is more committed to enhancing our environment.

Daimler, the biggest exhibitor at the Show, has seen the market turn and steady growth is now evident.

It took the opportunity to showcase the new 3-axle Mercedes-Benz Sprinter City 77 midibus as a new flagship in the small urban bus range.

Entering the European market in 2000 King Long was the fi rst Chinese manufacturer to arrive. It now has five models in its range. Well over 1,000 King Long vehicles are on European roads today.

At the Show, UK based company Arriva signed a contract to deliver 200 low floor buses to their operation in Malta. King Long hopes that this order will lead to more sales in other countries where Arriva operates.

MAN presented a new downsized CNG engine which offers a better power to weight ratio while its subsidiary Neoplan premiered the new generation Skyliner Double Decker with enhanced safety features. At 13.99 metres, this coach offers a higher seating capacity and a larger luggage space volume than its predecessor.

A feature of the new seats, which are standard on the Comfort Class 400 model is an easy to use pivoting design for folding away the armrest. The Daimler luxury coach brand is heading in 2011 with a facelift on all models.

Polish manufacturers which enjoys 50% of the market in their home Country are now making inroads into Western Europe. This year, for example Solaris will deliver 200 vehicles to Scandinavia. At the IAA it launched the Urbino 18 Hybrid. 18m long and with 3 axles it is fi xed with a Cummins Euro 5 engine. The vehicle does not have a gearbox and uses a traction system similar to a trolley bus.

Last year at Busworld Kortrijk Show Scania launched a touring coach built in China in association with Higer and subsequently driven

by Fleet Bus & Coach. The 6x2 version pictured is now available for sale in Europe. Using Scania's quality build process, the new coach has full Scania warranty and support. As yet there has not been a defi nitive word on the introduction of a right hand drive model.

Otokar says that if it were not for the industry downturn it would be present in the Irish market by now. Exhibiting nine vehicles on its stand the star of Show for them was the Territo. Powered by a Deutz 290 hp engine it is built on a 12m chassis.

Now employing 1,200 people at its manufacturing plant new Istanbul, Turkey, Otokar buses are operating in most countries in Western Europe.

2010 – IAA, Hanover, Germany Super Bus A concept vehicle developed by the Delhi University of Technology in The Netherlands attracted a lot of attention. Made of carbon the Super Bus is the same width and length as a normal bus but about one third of the height. With seating for 35 passengers its aerodynamic shape makes it very efficient. 16 GullWing doors allow easy access with little interference to other passengers. Electrically powered it has a range of 200 kms. So far €9 million has been invested in the project. In this concept the vehicle will operate on its own specific route for the centre section of its journey joining the normal traffic to pick up and drop off passengers.

VDL Bus of the Year 2011 Citea took centre stage on the VDL Stand. Its outstanding feature is its lightweight construction. Its popularity is endorsed by the fact that over five hundred are being delivered to Dubai over a twelve month period. Sporting the Group’s new brand logo VDL the Citea attracted plenty of attention.

Futura is the new coach presented by VDL in Hanover for the European market. Two and three axle chassis are available at 12.9m and 13.9m respectively. Using a DAF driveline including the AS-Tronic auto transmission passenger comfort is assured. Built as an integral coach VDL say this is the starting point for a new modular product family of coaches.

Turkish manufacturer Temsa has launched a midi coach, which will certainly turn heads with the newly designed MD9. With generous luggage space of 5m and a maximum seating for 40 people the new MD9 will give operators a competitive advantage. Temsa has manufacturing plants in Turkey and Egypt and 35% of its export business is sold in Europe.

A new A330 Hybrid, the Atlino and Atlon dominated the Van Hool stand. The Hybrid has its diesel engine fitted vertically to the rear left of the vehicle while the Atlino has all the properties of the Atlon except that its floor height is limited to 860mm.

Viseon, established by former Neoplan executives premiered a number of new models such as the LDD14 Double Decker low f loor that accommodates up to 135 passengers. It can have 2 or 3 entry doors. The C10 is its fi rst 10.4m midicoach while the C13 Premium Coach is 12.7m in length on 2 axles.

Since the MAN Nutzfahrzeuge Group took over Volkswagen’s South American Commercial Vehicle Division, much investment has been made in updating existing models from both its truck and bus/coach range.

Direct from China Zhengzhov Yutong Bus Co. Ltd, was established in 1993 and looks to Europe for growth potential. Last year sales reduced almost 30,000 units with 10% dedicated to the export market. Its aim is to become the stand-alone number one bus industry company in China and a main international bus supplier.

Volvo Volvo’s new Intercity 8900 meets the requirements of operators when it comes to choosing a new vehicle that is fuel efficient and environmentally friendly. Built from an aluminium process the new lightweight body has dramatically improved the fuel performance. With fibreglass being used for the side panels it gives the added advantage of fuel efficiency and economical repairs. Overall the weight of the newer models is up to 200 kg less.

There are many reasons to celebrate this year’s show. Many thought it wouldn’t happen because of the economic difficulties in Ireland and Britain at present. But it is happening, and it is a success. That we could run a successful show in the dark days of 2010 suggests that we can run a successful show in any year. We are confident that the future of the Coach & Bus Show is secure.

That the show has been in operation since 2000 is a credit to past and present members of the Coach Tourism & Transport Council (CTTC), and a loyal group of suppliers to the industry.

We are grateful to all of this year’s exhibitors, and the volunteers including Willie Martin and his team who have installed the vehicles; Cheryl Halpenny for organising the Gala Dinner; and the CTTC Executive under the Chair of Paddy Kavanagh who have provided their counsel.

When we mooted the idea of the Tourism Village, we had litt le reason to expect it to be as successful as it is today. However, Fáilte Ireland saw its potential and underwrote enough of our costs to ensure that the idea could grow in confidence. At the time of writing more than 60 businesses and organisations have taken stands, and there have been many calls to run the Tourism Village as a stand alone event next year.

One-to-One with Gerry Mullins, C.E.O., Coach Tourism & Transport Council (CTTC), with Jarlath Sweeney editor@fleet.ie JS. Before speaking to you about your role as CEO of the Coach Tourism & Transport Council (CTTC) and main organiser of the Coach & Bus Show, please inform readers and visitors to the Exhibition what the CTTC is all about?

GM. The Coach Tourism & Transport Council (CTTC) is the representative organisation for the private coach and bus operators in Ireland. The CTTC was formed in 1983 and was chaired by the late Paddy Barry for three years, before being replaced by Paddy Kavanagh from 1986-1990.

Paddy became Chairman again this time last year. Originally it was just the Coach Tourism Council, with a focus on coach tourism. Later the name extended to take in the wider bus transport industry, and this reflects the wider interests we have today.

JS. What are the CTTC’s main objectives?

GM. We represent our 66 members on issues that include coach tourism, school transport, integrated ticketing, real time passenger information, scheduled services and private hire. Our main objectives are to achieve wins for our members in all these areas. But to be a litt le more specific, our objectives include increasing the market in those areas, such as increasing the number of scheduled services routes that are available to private operators, increasing the market for domestic and International coach tours, and creating a fairer school transport system.

JS. Are you looking for more members? How does a coach operator gain membership?

GM. We always welcome new members. Our membership criteria include the requirement of having two coaches, and various other criteria relating to the quality of vehicles. The full list of requirements are posted on our website: www.cttc.ie JS. How have your members reacted to the amendments to the 12 Day Rule?

GM. The 12 Day Rule has been greeted with distain. It is madness, and our members can only see it in this light. The latest amendment is presented as a bonus or some sort of benefit to the coach operators, and it is presented as a measure that will improve road safety. The opposite is the case. If a driver picks up a group in Shannon, they www.fleet.ie

can only drive for six days before being forced to take a rest day. However, if they pick up a group in Turin, they can drive up through Switzerland, Germany, France and even England and not be forced to take a rest for 12 days. What possible benefit can this amendment bring?

JS. Some months into your role as CEO, has your perception of the public transport industry changed?

GM. No. The only way forward for public transport is for a greater role for private operators. The more I learn about our public transport system, the more it is clear to me that private operators will always provide the best services. And they can do it without cost to the exchequer.

JS. Integrated ticketing between all PSV providers is now being finalised. How will it work and when is the planned launch date?

GM. Yes, it will work, and it will work very well.

I’m on the board of the project, where I represent the private operators. The roll-out of integrated ticketing equipment for private operators will begin in the summer of 2011, and I expect the private operators will be fully part of the system in the autumn.

JS. Recently the CTTC met up with the Federation of Passenger Transport Northern Ireland – will this lead to an All-Ireland approach to lobbying the EU on industry related issues?

JS. Your good work in organising the Coach & Bus Show 2010 is clearly evident in the record number of exhibitors to the event – you must be pleased?

GM. I must admit the vehicular side of the show has been a slog, but in the end almost all the exhibitors we hoped would exhibit are exhibiting. The reason we will have a record number of exhibitors is because of the Tourism Village, which has been an incredible success. At the time that you and I are talking, the Village is sold out and we are looking for new space.

JS. By bringing a tourism element, do you expect a broader audience to attend?

GM. We set up the Tourism Village so that new exhibitors could access the very same audience (coach company owners, their drivers and their staff ). However, as the Tourism Village grew we saw it was only fair to those new exhibitors if we broadened the audience to facilitate people who book group tours, such as tour operators, heads of Clubs and Societies, and Teacher organizations etc.

We have been careful not to overrun the vehicular side of the Show with people who are not likely to be customers. However, the two sides of the Show need each other. If we can create extra tourism business in Ireland, it will automatically boost the sales of vehicles and their components.

GM. Certainly both organisations feel we should be working more closely together, and I look forward to further interaction w ith the FPTNI. However, we didn’t discuss an AllIreland approach.

Euro Bus Expo – NEC, Birmingham

E

arlier this month Euro Bus Expo at the NEC welcomed almost 9,000 visitors to its three-day Show. 260 manufacturers and suppliers took part and over 100 new vehicles were on display. In contrast to the IAA Commercial Vehicles Show in Hanover held in September, there was less optimism from exhibitors and manufacturers. Those attending the German event spoke of having turned the

corner, while in Birmingham people in similar positions were confi rming light at the end of the tunnel. However, all of the manufacturers and exhibitors were happy with the Show and all of them are of the belief that they will see the corner turned in mid-2011. Operators and manufacturers will have been pleased to hear Transport Secretary Norman Baker re-affi rm his Government’s commitment to investment

in public transport. “Th is has been a fantastic Show, anyone I have spoken to has been happy with the quality and feel of the Show,” said Simon Posner, Chief Executive of the Confederation of Passenger Transport in the UK. Many operators feel that the Olympic Games event which will be held in London (2012) may be the bounce the industry needs.

Colin Robertson CEO of ADL (Alexander Dennis Ltd) says that strategic decisions taken by his company two years ago have ensu red t hei r survival. By focusing on weight reduction, fuel economy and developing export markets, ADL has counteracted the effect of a reduction in demand.

ADL also claims that the running cost of an Enviro 400 (Double Decker) will be €60,000 cheaper over the lifetime of the vehicle than its nearest rival.

A lcolock is a simple devise that will determine if a driver is over a preset alcohol limit. When this happens the vehicle will be immobilised and a replacement driver needs to be found. Depending on the policy of the company the limit can be set anywhere between zero and the legal limit. Th is product is available in Ireland and can be fitted to most vehicles.

Irizar Spanish coachbuilder Irizar has been involved in this business for over 120 years and has production plants in seven countries. Birmingham provided the platform to launch the Irizar i6 in the UK market. It is an integral coach using DAF power. Irizar says that from a strategic point of view it is essential that it brings an integral vehicle to the market. Customers have the option of using Scania chassis if they wish but it is likely there would be a cost premium.

Eminox Founded in 1971 to manufacture exhaust systems for all models of trucks and coaches, Eminox is now the market leader when it comes to retrofit exhaust technology. Operators going into London from January 2012 using below Euro 3 standard and above 1.2 tonne GVW will have the necessary exhaust treatment equipment to comply with London’s Low Emissions Zone (LEZ) regulations. Currently, London is the only Low Emissions Zone in the UK and there are none as yet in Ireland. However, with 40 similar zones in Germany it seems likely more LEZ areas are not far away. To have the system fitted costs €6,000 and will take half a day. After 20 January if you are found in London with a non-compliant vehicle the fi ne is £1,000.

Chinese manufacturer King Long launched a City Bus at the Show, the 6127J. 200 examples of these buses will be delivered to Arriva for an operation in Malta in the near future but the specification is similar to the requirements for the UK market. Fully compliant with LEZ (London Low Emissions) the Euro 5 6127J uses Cummins power.

With over 7,000 Lions City buses operating in European Cities using CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) MAN used Euro Bus Expo 10 to put a toe in the water and gauge operator reaction in the UK. On the ground they had a left hand drive version on display.

Otokar participated in the Euro Bus Expo for the fi rst time.

The Turkish manufacturer has high expectations for its products and claims that one in every ten vehicles on European roads by 2020 will be an Otokar. In Birmingham it launched the Kent 290 LF, which is a 12m Low Floor bus, fitted with a Deutz engine (290 hp) (Euro 4) and Voith Transmission.

Now firmly at home within the ADL Group (A le x a nder Den n i s Ltd) Plaxton launched the second-generation Panther coach (see further details on the News section). Available on a 12.8m Volvo B9R chassis 15m Volvo B 13 RT. Plaxton says there is still some demand for new coaches. At the Show Plaxton had the 60th Elite to be built.

Temsa Turkish manufacturer Temsa continues to make progress in the UK market. Through its National Distributor it presented the Avenue Low Floor Citybus. Fitted with a 6.7 litre Cummins ISB Euro 5 and ZF gearbox the bus has 42 seats with a maximum capacity of 70. A key feature of all Temsa products is their light weight and the Temsa Avenue weighs in at 10,300 kgs.

Wrightbus Volvo Bus Volvo Bus has launched a new 13 litre engine for the 9700 series, D13C. Designed as a rear engine it is 6 cylinder and Euro 5 compliant (460 hp). Volvo see signs of recovery in the bus market and is confident that the second part of next year will see fi rm orders return. In the meantime the Swedish brand is using its time to assist customers improve profitability.

Northern Ireland manufacturer Wrightbus displayed StreetLite, the most recent edition to their growing product family. Group Manager Director Mark Nodder said that the Ballymena company was at the three ‘R’ stage - Resilience, Resolve and Resurgence. Wrightbus was fi rst to market with the fi rst Whole Vehicle Type Approved Certification for StreetLite and the 80+ year old fi rm remains committed to manufacturing in Ulster saying that orders are still coming through. A new book ‘The Wright Way’ has been written by Jack Kernohan and was launched at the Show. It chronicles the remarkable history and story of the Wright Group.

Volvo 8900 Two into One does Go!

I

n advance of the launch of the Volvo 8900 at the IAA Commercial Vehicles Show in Hanover, Germany, it was presented to the Press Corps at its Swedish headquarters in Gothenburg. Volvo 8900 will replace two existing models the 8700 and the 8500 (which are made in Sweden & Poland respectively). Neither of these vehicles are available in Ireland but Volvo Bus says that it hopes the 8900 will also be manufactured in right-hand drive form. Marketed as an Intercity bus, the Volvo 8900 range includes a standard height and a low floor version. Chassis lengths are 12.2m or 13m with up to 14.7m on the tri-axle models. The principal reason for bringing out this new model is a demand from customers and also help them to reduce their carbon footprint and ultimately their running costs. “The Volvo 8900 is an intercity bus with lower environmental impact that features a number of different solutions to reduce the operator’s operating costs,” says Stefan Guttman, Volvo Buses’ Director of city buses in Europe.

Volvo I-shift automated transmission is standard on the new bus. Two axle versions will have a 7.2 litre D7E (290 hp) Deutz engine and the tri-axle will have the Volvo Group 9.0 litre D9B (380

While it is difficult to pass judgement on a bus on a test track it has all the features you would expect from a Volvo - easy handling, very comfortable driving position, very powerful and confident braking. As always, safety is at the core of Volvo Bus & Coach products. Alcolock is fitted and is part of the vehicle management system. Both the standard floor and low floor variants were available to drive.

Behind the wheel of the low floor coach seemed a bit strange. Low floor buses are very common on Intercity routes in Nordic countries. Would they be popular in Ireland? Unless there was a big price differential between the high and low options, I think operators would be somewhat nervous of what way passengers and commuters would react.

Inside the bus there are many options available to operators depending on what type of work the bus will perform. Luggage space is plentiful with the addition of sizable interior overhead luggage racks. On most buses there is up to 8m3 of luggage space. Seats are Volvo designed and available with either 2 or 3-point seatbelts. Volvo is pleased with the 8900 and says that regardless of seat specification an operator chooses those who travel in it they are assured of first class levels of comfort and safety.

The body structure consists of aluminum profiles that are bolted together and the roof is also made of aluminum. The major advantages of aluminum are that it is a lightweight and non-corrosive material.

The front and rear modules are made of steel, which features such advantages as being easy to mould into an attractive design.

“The side panels are manufactured from fiberglass and various plastics that are glued to the structure,” added Carl-Johan. “Fiberglass and plastics are lightweight materials that provide smooth and attractive sides for the buses, and the side panels are particularly easy to replace if damaged.”

Volvo 7500 Another vehicle of note from the Volvo Bus camp is the Volvo 7500, an articulated bus designed for operation on one particular route in Gothenburg which may be part of a solution for Dublin if the proposed BRT (Bus Rapid Transit), being discussed at the moment for the Sandyford area is successful.

Powered by the D9B (360hp) engine it has a fully automatic ZF transmission. At 24m long it can carry 200 passengers.

Wrightbus – StreetLite - Streetwise

T

he Wrightbus Group based in Ballymena, Northern Ireland earlier this summer launched StreetLite - the latest member of its family.

With over 9,000 Wrightbus vehicles on the Irish and British roads every day their products are both comprehensive and versatile. Founded in 1946, today the family business still remains owned and controlled by the Wright family.

A visit to Wrights in Ballymena is almost like visiting relations as they eagerly tell you what they have been up to since your last occasion in their company. Indeed, Wright’s has been up to plenty since my last visit, so busy in fact that it has built a new bus, StreetLite.

Mark reiterated his point by saying that bus manufacturers and operators must be conscious that one cannot transport people like livestock.

StreetLite offers various configurations to help operators achieve this delicate balance. On the 9.5m model, up to 66 passengers can be accommodated depending on the configuration and on the 10.2 model up to 71 passengers can be accommodated. Standard engine is the Cummins ISB5/EEV 185 hp. Voith transmission is used.

With a 60 vehicle order in the pipeline for UK based leasing company Mistral, this vote of confidence in StreetLite will also give confidence to operators in this market.

Driving StreetLite Group Managing Director Mark Nodder said at the launch of the StreetLite that this latest addition to the Wrightbus line-up would bring a whole new look and style to the small bus sector.

On appearance alone StreetLite has a distinct presence, but in terms of value and reliability it certainly seems that the investment of money, focused engineering time and experience will pay off .

Two versions of the bus are available on 8.8m/9.5m chassis with the front axle in front of the entrance door and 10.2m/10.8m version with the front axle behind the entrance door.

One of the cornerstones of the project was involving strategic partners in the project from the beginning, these included Wabco, Cummins and VDO. Wrights found a certain freedom when they were designing the StreetCar compared to earlier models and when starting to create StreetLite from a blank sheet it presented the designers with as many opportunities as challenges. With a design that has a resemblance to the StreetCar ftr, StreetLite has all the familiar Wright features and looks. Paul Blair, one of the designers says weight, efficiency and safety are the priorities, as always.

Passenger capacity is critical for operators now.

When the designers are fi nished and the paint has dried a bus must stand up to the scrutiny of passengers, operators and drivers. One of the first things you notice gett ing on the StreetLite is the spacious entrance area. Sometimes smaller buses can have a lot of clutter around the entrance area, not on this bus. A manual ramp for wheelchair and buggy access is fi tt ed. Th roughout the bus there are very few steps or obstacles for passengers. A combination of tubular handrails and straps enhance the safety of standing passengers. StreetLite delivers a feeling of space and brightness inside which, is enhanced by the low windows.

We drove the bus on a combination of rural and urban routes around the Antrim town also made famous for its Michelin tyre factory. It has a well laid out driver’s area with all the features of a modern coach. What is very impressive is the all-round vision. A well-designed window on the nearside allows the driver to see down very low and would certainly pick out small children or a rogue bollard. A low cut windscreen makes sure that nothing will be obstructed from your view. Acceleration is smooth as is the braking and there is plenty of power although with a full load of passengers it might not be as brave.

On some of the narrow sections it was easy to keep inside the white line and the position of the mirrors did not present any challenges.

Summary Wrightbus has hit the midi-bus market with a bang. StreetLite, due of the deal with Mistral will be exposed to the market very fast and operators will decide its success very soon. In the near future a hybrid version will be available.

Wrightbus has every reason to be confident.

Bus Euro Test 2011

arlier this year the Jury of the International Bus of the Year (IBOY) ascended on the Romanian capital Bucharest to put the nominees for the 2011 Bus of the Year through their paces and then select a winner. After the week’s trials, which involved road testing, brake testing and noise levels, the Jury got their collective heads together and elected the 2011 IBOY. Fleet Bus & Coach represents Ireland on the International Jury and Sean Murtagh was there to scrutinise and choose the winning vehicle.

VDL Citea

C

oming in at 10,500 kg the VDL Citea is a true lightweight, which reflects in both capacity and improved fuel consumption. Available with either DAF or Cummins engines and a choice of Voith or ZF transmissions, operators choosing a Citea have the opportunity to mix and match components.

Supplied for this test was a Citea with DAF 9.2 litre (310 hp) engine coupled to a ZF six-speed automatic transmission. Whilst some Jurors commented that the driver’s area was a litt le dated, I was more impressed with how functional it was. Displays were easy to read and all of the controls were close at hand. I have a personal preference for a higher driving position and the 32 FLEETBUS&COACH | Winter 2010

Citea certainly presents that. A one-level floor throughout gives a feeling of extra length to the bus with the section behind the back seats almost giving the notion of the back section of an articulated bus. Clever moulding design and the use of cantilever seats will make the cleaner’s job easier.

Driving around the streets of Bucharest, the Citea handles well. Mirrors are excellent and the combination of a raised driving position and low windscreen reduced blind spots significantly.

With a capacity for 100 passengers the Citea is certainly a market leader in the low floor/low entry market.

Mercedes-Benz Citaro

H

eadquarters for the test in Bucharest was one of the RATB Depots. RATB is the main public transport provider in the city and over half of the fleet are MercedesBenz Citaros. With almost 30,000 Citaros sold, the test vehicle is an upgraded version of the original model. Mercedes-Benz claims that every third bus in Europe is a Citaro, and has sold 4,000 units in 2009 in spite of the recession.

Presented for the test was a bus with the 7.2 litre OM926LA (286 hp) engine (EEV) with a Voith D854 four speed automatic transmission.

Being on its third and fourth generation you would expect Mercedes-Benz to have built the perfect bus, and of course it has. Driving the Citaro is always a pleasant experience. Many of the design features on the bus tested were for the local market. For security reasons the driver is enclosed completely similar to the old single cab double-decker. Blind spots are almost non-existent but the design of the handbrake handle is something that could be improved.

In Bucharest the standard configuration for passengers is 27 seats, 70 standees, to give a total of 97. Mercedes-Benz is very proud of the Citaro and rightly so. It has been a good servant.

Temsa Avenue

T

urkish manufacturer Temsa continues to make inroads in the European market and its entry into the City/Low floor market is timely. Only a year in this marketplace it has to date supplied some right hand vehicles to the UK market. Similar to the VDL Bus, the Avenue can be supplied with DAF or Cummins engines, the test bus being fitted with DAF power and a ZF Automatic Transmission. Stepping into the bus is a little difficult, something a little adjustment will cure, but once inside it is very bright and roomy.

Standee passengers will fi nd it very easy to hold on as the handles are well positioned. Some minor

faults were identified in the interior but all of these have been modified in upgrades. A new more modern driver’s cockpit area is now a standard feature on all Avenue models. From a driving point of view the bus handles well, although at times it seemed light on the road. Although the mirror on the driver’s side is high, it just takes a litt le time to get used to. However, this has been changed in later models. Vision is good and the split pillar at the side of the windscreen gives extra vision. Temsa is steadily making its presence felt in the European market. In France it has over 3,500 units on the road.

Volvo 7700 Hybrid

O

ne of the fi rst things I notice about a Volvo bus or coach is its presence. It always looks well and the 7700 Hybrid is no different. Hybrid is still a new concept and apart from the environmental argument that comes up, there is the argument around paying more up front and saving on the operating cost.

Volvo Bus states that some Cities have reported up to 40% reduction in running costs.

Inside the 7700 is as you would expect – impressive, very bright and with plenty of rails and straps for passengers to hold on to. Overall

accommodation is 34 seated and 48 standing with room for a wheelchair.

Driving a Volvo is always comfortable and easy.

However, the hybrid element of the drive takes a litt le gett ing used to particularly the Stop/ Start feature.

With the diesel/electric hybrid, noise levels reduce significantly as the engine is generally stopped when at a bus stop and moves away in electric mode. Overall Volvo claims that the hybrid system is 75% quieter. Currently the

battery life on the hybrid is four years but it is expected that this lifetime will be extended.

Volvo has taken a lead in hybrid development and will deliver 100 vehicles by the end of this year to customers.

Otokar Kent

T

urkish manufacturer, Otokar produces 5,000 buses each year. Since 2006 it has sold 1,500 vehicles into the Western European market. Otokar, which is owned by Turkish Company Koç, will have right hard drive version of the Kent model by the end of this year.

On the test vehicle a 7.1 litre Deutz engine is fitted (EEV) with a Voith four speed automatic transmission. An alternative engine supplier will be available next year.

For its fi rst Citybus model, the Otokar Kent is impressive. Upon entering the bus there is ample room, maybe a litt le too much at the expense of the driver’s area, which is a little narrow. Walking through the bus is easy and the interior of the test vehicle was very appealing.

Comfortable to drive the Otokar Kent went on to handle well. There is a litt le blindspot on the driver’s side but overall vision is excellent.

Otokar may be one of the more recent arrivals to this segment of the market. Later in the year

a right hand drive version will be available and Ireland is a market Otokar has in their sights for the Kent.

Barcelona Bus Operator selects Eminox emissions reduction technology

As part of what is now Europe’s largest retrofit programme to target PM and NOx, 363 Euro 2 and 3 buses will receive the SCRT upgrade. Eminox’s team of specialists have already fitted 120 buses with the SCRT® technology on site at TMB depots. A programme is in place to complete phase 2 of the ambitious upgrade project during 2011.

The Merits of Bus Rapid Transit

A

t a time when every cent spent by Government on infrastructural projects is being closely scrutinised in terms of value for money and delivery time, it is refreshing to see Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council proposing to build a BRT (Bus Rapid Transit System) that will link St. Vincent’s Hospital with Sandyford Business Park.

It is hoped that the plan will be included by the National Transport Authority when it presents its Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Area.

BRT is a system where specially designed buses use a designated roadway, generally running parallel to an existing urban thoroughfare. Many examples of these systems are in operation around the World, including Brisbane, Bogota, Lagos, Cleveland and many more. Istanbul also has a very successful system in place. The Turkish city that divides two continents suffers from severe traffic congestion and with four phases of the BRT in operation, bringing the combined route to 50 kilometres. Passengers using the new route save approximately 45 minutes per day. Operated by I.E.T.T. (Istanbul Elektrik Tramvay Ve Tünel) 400 specially designed buses are in service, provided by Mercedes-Benz Citaro (renamed CapaCity) and VDL Phileas buses. At 20 metres in length the capacity of the specially designed buses is 200 passengers.

So why did the various city Authorities opt for a BRT system? Well, for three reasons – firstly it was relatively cheap to construct, €2 million per kilometre as distinct from €400 million per kilometre for Underground Railway and Metro systems. Secondly, it could be constructed and become operational in a short time. Istanbul saw the first section of the new route fully operational in eight months. Thirdly, the capacity of the route was calculated to be 40,000 passengers per hour, which was twice the figure that could be carried by a light rail system. Officials in Istanbul are very pleased with the success of the BRT system which carries over one million passengers each day. So what lessons or leads could we take in Ireland from the experience of Istanbul? Certainly the current proposal from Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council seems viable and sensible. At a cost projected at €33 million the promoters say the project could be delivered in a relatively short period of time, although it has not specifically said how long. One of the key features of the proposed service is the way it links to other public service routes. Linking in with the DART, Mainline Rail, Marion Road QBC, the Stillorgan Road QBC (Quality Bus Corridor) and the LUAS Green Line the proposed figures of public using the service at 2,000 per hour may be a little understated, particularly when you consider it passes some high density work places, St. Vincent’s Hospital, RTE, UCD and Sandyford Industrial Estate. Owen Keegan, Council Manager of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council is enthusiastic about the project and says he is happy to work with St. Vincent’s Hospital, RTE, UCD and the Sandyford Business Associations in supporting the project.

the body to implement change here and so there role is critical. So far I am not convinced that they will be as dynamic as they could be. Chief Executive, Gerry Murphy in an article in a Sunday paper recently, made a distinction between public and private operators, may be not that important you say, but if that distinction is in his mind the danger is it will reflect in policy. Is the NTA free of the shackles that has in the past, deprived our citizens of affective customer focused Public transport, time will tell?

Politicians face some very tough decisions in the current climate and and need to show leadership. A BRT system may be regarded as ‘Metro Light’ but it is affordable. In the past air travellers thought you had to have your breakfast on a flight, but Michael O’Leary of Ryanair proved that by not having one you can fly cheaper. A BRT system will give commuters comparable efficiency at a fraction of the cost. BlueLine and its promoters in South Dublin know this and by promoting this innovation, they are putting the needs of their employees and residents first, let us see the politicians and the NTA do the same.

Are there any downsides to this project? I am not sure, but certainly any downsides are more than overshadowed by the upsides. Owen Keegan says that the income derived from fares will cover the operating costs. If true this is great for the taxpayer in any climate. In Istanbul on a bigger scale of operation 90% of operational costs are covered by the fares. One thing for sure though is that for the BlueLine BRT to achieve its full potential it will require the speedy introduction of an integrated ticketing system. Transport is a verb, not a noun and allowing commuters to switch from a bus to a Luas or Dart Service is critical to getting people to give up the comfort of their cars for the efficiency of public transport.

Is there more planners could take from the BRT concept? Well, with a likely cost of €5 billion to construct Metro North, should a series of bus only routes not be considered? In the current economic climate are ‘Trophy Infrastructure’ projects like Metro North essential? Some critics say we have just opened a ‘Trophy Terminal’ at Dublin Airport, which may be at the expense of some of our other Airports. Surely there is a role for private bus operators here. For too long now the Government have been talking about opening up the industry.
